Umno-haters’ and Barisan-baiters’ Club

The explosion of political blogs and internet news sites over the last five years has left our Ministry of Information hacks and our mainstream Malaysian TV and news editors staggering, dazed and confused.

The pent-up emotions of the Malaysian public have been suppressed for half a century under a BN mass media mafia. Now set free by greater public access to the Internet, these emotions have swept over the blogs and comments sections of internet news portals.

Any glance through my favourite sites, the usual suspects like “Hornbill Unleashed” and the various Malaysia news portals (Today, Kini, Mirror, Insider and the Nut Graph), yields a huge chunk of readers’ comments. I admit many of these are repetitive, ignorant and even bigoted, hidden behind pseudonyms. But there are some carefully considered and informative views and heartfelt appeals for justice too.

There are, also, the occasional salvoes by Umno cyber-troopers. Now and again, Umno propagandists wade in with their racist comments, particularly on Malaysia Today, aiming to convert heaven-knows-who. These half-literate cyber-troopers are, despite the “glamour” of their titles, armed only with rusting pea-shooters and water-pistols. They repeat tired Umno drivel, that only Umno can ensure Malay dominance, and that Pas is helping Chinese take over Malaysia, and so on.

blogs-anim

The most apt riposte is usually delivered via a democratic vote of all the other readers. The chance to vote comments up or down means the jaded Umno racist invective is quickly buried under a mountain of downturned thumbs. RPK publishes all comments, just as Hornbill Unleashed does, as long as they are not obscene or incendiary. It makes me smile to see these comments being treated as they deserve, with this electronic coup de grace, rather than being deleted by the webmaster.

The mainstream Malaysian media have reacted predictably, by turning up their own partisan volume, trying to drown out dissent, and trying to build up their own news websites. But the Utusan, the Star and the NST are poorly equipped to fight this virtual war. The KTS mouthpiece, the Borneo Post, and the Naim organ, the Eastern Times, are even worse off, and more laughable.

These slavish newspapers have failed to compete with the appeal of the new electronic media, and certainly cannot match the higher quality of foreign news channels, like Al-Jazeera, the BBC, the Guardian newspaper, the New York Times, and the Washington Post – all of which are accessible for free.

As an example, the BBC’s coverage of the official seizure of 10,000 bibles in Bahasa Melayu in Malaysia, because they contained the word “Allah” for God, has been streets ahead of the coverage in Malaysia’s mainstream media. Lively interest has ensued in this Malaysian exercise in arbitrary power: the news story was the seventh most popular worldwide, on the BBC’s news website.

This is the provebial "Pendulum Swing" effect. After more than 50 years of Barisan Najis rule and propaganda-ist drivel, it is only natural for the pendulum to swing to the other extreme, that of being anti-establishment and anti-anything that is supported in the Mainstream Media (Govt. propaganda).

We don't have to ask ourselves if we are anti-establishment when we read sites like Malaysia Today, 'cos Malaysia Today is NOT anti-establishment ! Pak Bui, you are spouting nonsense here ! Malaysia Today and Raja Petra tells it like it is ... he berates both Govt. and Opposition in the same Blog, whenever they deserve to be berated ! the only thing is that the Govt. & Barisan Najis deserves ot be berated almost all the time because they are Munafik Kafirs abusing Islam in their process of plundering Malaysia, whereas Pakatan Rakyat is guilty mainly of indecision and inexperience in handling prickly issues, but have solid Principles at heart. So there you have it ! Malaysia Today is as neutral and objective as any outstanding journalistic rag can be !!

UMNO are just too heat up.. on this hand.. they are pushing cyber world, Every famil needs a PC, and encourage ppl to use internet. On the other hand.. they want to make the ppl stupid enough NOT to notice their wrong doing. ( tat is 1 reason our EDUCATION are such a mess and never evolved )

What to do?? For me, I advice, QUIT~! If you dont have the brain... dont be a leader.

And the most funny is.... who is our EDU minister.... BUT what is his achievement??? Even with his bachelor's degree, did he use his brain before talking?? How many times, when he say 1... then najib say 2.

After 23 years of Mahathir's iron fisted dictatorial rule, the opening of alternative news portals is like a breath of fresh air. We always get the latest uncensored news first like the cow head incident in Shah Alam etc. These portals will help the people decide which political parties are worthy of our support unlike the MSM which are BN propaganda machines. smilies/wink.gif

Actually i agree that allowing readers to vote is a good idea, but supprreing those with high negatives is not a good thing.

First it suppresses valid counter arguments.

2nd and more importantly it encourages despotism. In the west there is a culture of encouragement. They willingly vote yes but refrain from voting no if it means a no vote will mean suppression. They encourage children to express themselves and on the whole are encouraging and tolerant. This is not the same for some eastern cultures. Children are made to feel guilty all the time. They end up insecure and guilt ridden. Their culture is one of saying "no" and then bullying those who are weak. Is this what we want from MT readers?

We normally buy the mainstream papers like The Star, New Straits Times, etc. for the sports news, financial news, commodity prices, 4D results and even the cartoons. If Malaysiakini, M-T,and the rest can have a small section summarizing all these "other" news, then there would be no more any necessity to buy these papers. These papers would then die like rats which have taken poison. Already now, some places are distributing the NST for free.
