(Bernama) - Former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim today lodged two police reports over a memorandum by the Syariah Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) and statement by a senior official of the Islamic Training Institute of Malaysia (ILIM) on former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

Shahidan, who is also an Umno supreme council member, was accompanied by former Perlis Islamic Religious Department director Md Sadik Ismail, several imam and about 200 of his supporters when lodging the reports at the Kangar police station.

He said PGSM’s memorandum sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Oct 12 which contained allegations against Asri, such as using an extreme approach in teaching Islam, constantly courting controversies, to the extent of causing public uneasiness and fighting incidents in Perlis had also tarnished the image of the state.

On the allegation by ILIM assistant director Zamihan Mat Zain Al Ghari that Asri had falsified his syariah qualification, Shahidan said it questioned his credibility as Asri was appointed Perlis mufti when Shahidan was the menteri besar.

He said it was shameful that the statement came fom a senior officer of ILIM, an agency under the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), and that he was considering taking legal action against Zamihan.

Malaysia's ISLAM is so much politically institutionalized that it has to be regulated by various Islamic statutory bodies such JAKIM, JAIS,PGSM,and JAKUN ( oops sorry, not JAKUN, - even the Special Branch Officers find it amusing when interrogating RPK).

Such policy will only stifle the brilliance and creativity of Islam that It had once enjoyed.

ALL this stuff is just screaming out how Tunku Abdul Rahman was so wise to insist on Malaysia being a secular state. As far as divinity is concern, there is no debating because there is no proof and there is no logic. Its why its call faith..People who believe you can argue about divine basis for laws might as well make plans that aliens are coming to earth...

If only this Country is a secular one, tax payers money and court time would not be wasted over STUPID ISSUES. Whoever want to pray or not, whichever way or not is their own bloody business so long as one does not interfere with another's activity.

There will be no banning of certain bibles, no corpse snatching, no unruly opposition to inter-faith dialogues, no blaring loudspeakers to further sicken the sick, old folks, infants and the tired factory-shift workers.

Every one will be democratically equal and no lunatic ketuanan.
