Daim, however, does not want Abdullah to retire just yet. He needs Abdullah around until at least 2010 because it will take him two years to slowly bring back RM3 billion in cash. Yes, more than ten years ago, RM3 billion in RM500 and RM1,000 notes were smuggled out to Indonesia.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Malaysia Today

24 hours is a long time in politics, what more 24 weeks leading to December 2008. And over the last 24 days there has been much realignment in Malaysian politics. But can Anwar Ibrahim change this equation even more by convincing 24 Members of Parliament from Sabah and Sarawak to cross over to Pakatan Rakyat? If he can then he needs only ten more or so from Umno to join Pakatan Rakyat so that he can form the new federal government.

This is no longer just about Anwar getting at least 30 government MPs to join the opposition ranks -- which will then be transformed into the new government. There are also Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Daim Zainuddin prominently in the equation. And of course, not to be left out, is ‘First Lady’ in-waiting, Rosmah Mansor, who could most probably be Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s final nail in the coffin.

Yes, the direction and final outcome of Malaysian politics is subject to the moves of many political heavyweights. Anwar Ibrahim, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Daim Zainuddin, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Najib Tun Razak, Rosmah Mansor, Muhyiddin Yasin; they all have a bearing on what we are going to see come Christmas Day 2008. One person’s move changes the equation even further. And if everyone makes a move one can only guess what the final outcome will be.

To salvage the situation and checkmate Anwar, some people in Umno are talking to some people in PAS. Let us get one thing clear. Umno is not talking to PAS. Some people in Umno are talking to some people in PAS. And the ‘offer’ from these Umno people is simple. PAS leaves the opposition coalition and forms a new coalition with Umno. In states like Perak, PAS will form the government with Umno and not with PKR or DAP as its partner. PAS can become the Menteri Besar and Umno will support PAS in its effort to implement Islamic laws in the state.

PAS has of course rejected Umno’s ‘offer’, which was made on 9 March 2008. Officially the party is not interested and they wish to remain loyal to their Pakatan Rakyat partners, PKR and DAP. But there are some within PAS who are attracted by Umno’s offer to allow Islamic laws to be implemented -- as opposed to PKR and DAP who are both bitterly opposed to the implementation of any Islamic laws.

That explains why, of late, some people in PAS have, again, been talking about the implementation of Islamic laws. They are encouraged by Umno’s ‘softening’ on the issue. These people are of course too young to remember that more than 30 years ago PAS was similarly tricked by Umno -- and after almost three years they left Barisan Nasional when they realised that Umno was not sincere about Islam but only spoke about Islam to attract PAS into joining Barisan Nasional.

In the meantime, Anwar is going to court to get his September 1998 sacking as Deputy Prime Minister declared illegal and a violation of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. If he succeeds then Abdullah has to reinstate him as Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, by order of the court. But Malaysia already has a Deputy Prime Minister who goes by the name of Najib Tun Razak. Yes, but if Najib is forced to resign because of his wife’s implication in the Altantuya murder, and if it can be proven that his office is involved, then Najib is dead meat and there will be a vacancy for the post of Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. And Raja Petra Kamarudin’s sedition trial in October may be that playground to prove this -- unless they get cold feet and either drop the charges or delay the trial until next year.

When Tun Dr Mahathir found out he discontinued the usage of RM500 and RM1,000 notes. So the money is now stuck. The notes can, of course, be brought back, but they can’t be used in the open market. Instead, you have to send them to Bank Negara to be changed into smaller notes.

And this is where the problem lies. How to bring back RM3 billion in RM500 and RM1,000 notes unless you do it over two years and unless the Finance Minister cum Prime Minister gives his permission for Bank Negara to accept them? So Daim has to ensure that the Finance Minister cum Prime Minister stays on at least until 2010 when the entire RM3 billion can be safely brought back and sent to Bank Negara for conversion into smaller notes. And to ensure that the Finance Minister cum Prime Minister is not kicked out of office, Daim is prepared to spend half the amount to defeat the challengers like Tengku Razaleigh and Muhyiddin.

The 2008 Umno party election is going to be the most expensive election in Umno’s history. But then much is at stake, both in terms of power and money. So the cost is necessary. Dr Mahathir knows, of course, what Daim is up to and he wants Abdullah out now to thwart Daim’s move. And he wants Najib to challenge Abdullah but Najib has made a deal with Abdullah -- and with the Altantuya murder trial still proceeding very slowly Najib can’t afford to renege on his deal in case ‘new evidence’ surfaces in the course of the trial.

Tengku Razaleigh is not to be discounted just yet either. Over the last few months he has been making his rounds to the Umno branches and he appears to be gaining support. While Daim backs Abdullah, Dr Mahathir pressures Najib to bring Abdullah down, Abdullah checks Najib, Anwar makes a bid to get back his Deputy Prime Minister’s job and probably becomes the next Prime Minister as well, Muhyiddin ding-dongs between both sides, and much more, Tengku Razaleigh is slowly and successfully convincing the Umno grass-root that he is the White Knight who will save Umno from itself.

Power transfer deal leaves Mahathir out in the cold

Last week's deal between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak on an orderly handover of power brings political stability to the country - but has left former Umno stalwart Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad out in the cold.

Abdullah announced on Friday that he and Najib had agreed that he would hand over power to his deputy at the "right time", thus heading off any need for Najib to challenge him. But Abdullah clarified yesterday that no time frame had been set and that he would stand for the Umno presidency in December.

Sources say, however, that he had told senior party leaders this month that he would leave in mid-2010, giving Najib at least three years as prime minister before facing the voters in 2013.

Dr Mahathir reacted angrily to the deal, describing it as a disaster for the United Malays National Organisation, in a coalition already facing a bleak future after its heavy losses in the March 8 general election. "This is a bad deal...I think Najib will soon kiss the premiership goodbye," he said on Friday night. “(Abdullah continuing beyond December) will be the downfall of Umno."

He called Najib a "coward" for not challenging Abdullah.

Dr Mahathir had wanted Najib, a protégé he began nurturing in 1976, to either force Abdullah to quit earlier, or defeat him at the December party elections. Traditionally, the Umno president has always been the prime minister and leader of the 14-party Barisan Nasional coalition.

"Dr Mahathir is the big loser in this political deal between Abdullah and Najib because his protégé Najib abandoned him at the most crucial moment," said political analyst James Wong. "With Najib gone, Dr Mahathir has no credible candidate left to field against Abdullah."

Dr Mahathir has also isolated himself from Umno by resigning from the party last month in an apparently failed bid to whip up anti-Abdullah sentiment. He urged other Umno members to resign too, but fewer than a dozen heeded his call.

Political analysts said the handover deal would add stability to national politics. "It is an excellent face-saving formula for both Abdullah and Najib," said Shamsul Amri Baharuddin, professor of Malay civilisation at the National University of Malaysia.

The deal was struck after Najib, in a speech in London on Wednesday, swore on the honour of his revered father - Malaysia's second prime minister Abdul Razak, who died in 1976 - that he would never challenge Abdullah. "My father helped to build the party, I don't want to see it destroyed," Najib said.

Abdullah reciprocated within 24 hours, saying he too did not want the party ripped apart by a major factional fight - and revealed that the pair had struck a deal early this month for an uncontested handover.

Settling the Umno succession question, however, does not end Abdullah's woes - especially with the Opposition's Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stirring up public anger against him for suddenly raising petrol prices by 41 per cent this month. — South China Morning Post

To cross or not to cross the river?

At this moment, Umno Vice-President Muhyiddin Yassin is probably having mixed feelings. In London, Najib Razak said he would remain as the party's deputy president, while in Kuala Lumpur, the Umno President Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he will pass the baton to Najib when the time comes.

No.1 has chosen No.2 and No.2 has chosen No.1 as well. Both of them will proceed with their journeys hand-in-hand. What should No.3 do then?

Muhyiddin Yassin used to be considered Abdullah's man. When Abdullah received the baton from former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he was initially slotted as the popular candidate for the post of the deputy prime minister. However, Najib had the higher position and better qualifications in the party at that time, and with Mahathir as his patron, Abdullah eventually chose Najib. Muhyiddin Yassin, therefore, lost his chance.

The 8 March general election results have shaken Abdullah's position and Umno's internal power structure has changed as well. The leader with a poor showing in the election will naturally be strongly opposed and anyone who can lead the force will have the opportunity to replace him.

Najib kept a low profile and decided to stay as Abdullah's deputy. Meanwhile, Gua Musang Umno Division Chief, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, made an announcement that he is making a bid for the party's highest position. I'm afraid, however, that he is a bit too old for the post. Thus, Muhyiddin Yassin is well placed to challenge the post. In fact, not many Umno leaders have grass-root power with considerable ability and, at the same time, a decent image. Muhyiddin Yassin could be considered as one of them.

Challenging Abdullah and Najib would be a great uncertainty. Umno's power is concentrated in the hands of the president. Together with the help of the deputy president, it would not be easy to seize power. However, Muhyiddin Yassin would not have any other opportunity if he does not strike now. When Najib takes over as the new prime minister, he will have his own candidate for his successor and the candidate may not necessarily be Muhyiddin Yassin. Even if Najib chooses Muhyiddin Yassin as his deputy, there is no guarantee he would be the successor as he is six years older than Najib.

As Shakespeare said: “To be or not to be, that is the question!” I'm not sure whether Muhyiddin Yassin has read The Life and Death of Julius Caesar written by Shakespeare.

Caesar was hostile to the Roman Senate. In order to cut his power, the Senate called him back when he was out with his army. Caesar and his army came to the border of Rome – Rubicon. According to the Roman law, all commanders are not allowed to cross the river with army. Otherwise, it would be tantamount to a declaration of war on Rome itself.

Caesar paced up and down along the riverbank and eventually made a decision. He said: “To cross the river, it would be the human tragedy. Not to cross the river, it would be my own destruction.” He therefore chose to cross the river with his army and his move scared away his political opponents and the Senate. This in fact settled Caesar's position.

To cross or not to cross the river, it would be the greatest challenge for Muhyiddin Yassin. (By TAY TIAN YAN, Translated by SOONG PHUI JEE - Sin Chew Daily)

So all this internal struggle for power is for the 3 billion eh?!

The old man should know by now, that when he dies on his grave, he will be remembered as the mamak racist tyrant who cannot stop barking.

I say the people of Malaysia should bring back the 3billion and distribute among all Malaysians. That will be splendid!

RPK sir,

Malaysia suffers from having too many pembesar-pembesar still stuck in their hulubalang mode from Hang Tuah's time. But their have deviated from the warrior principles of Hang Tuah/ Hang Jebat. Too much leeway the rakyat have given to our pembesar-pembesar to do what they like with the country. But I don't blame who as the rakyat's awareness of their own power only slowly stirred and awaken after Hindraf and Bersih- both events are catalysts for rakyat who are more educated about their citizenry rights to take up rakyat's responsibility to check and control politicians.

See, UMNO is still stuck here: http://mylivingwall.com/v3/ind...Malaysians
The photo says it all.

I also like your idea to make both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional equally strong. Currently we still have old faces in both alliances but it certainly will be interesting when the next batch of new faces comes up. The rakyat must now demand the next batch of politicians meet rakyat's aspirations and demands now.

I suggest now is the best time for rakyat to write letters and ask commitment from who they think may be 'future' leaders to lay the groundwork for future accountability. If such 'leaders' say they are committed to democracy and do the other in future, we will have prove to dismiss them for deviating from their promises.

Perhaps we should also focus on the second liners in each political parties now.

2 points to ponder.
1. I thought the 500 and 1000 bill is not legal tender anymore. So it has to go BNM and BNM should refuse to change it then.
2. If DSAI wins the case can he become the DPM, bearing in mind that he is not UMNO member anymore. Maybe it is good for him to win so that he obtains the pension and clear his name. Would AAB actually agree for anwar to be DPM. Then what happens to PR?

Dearest YM RPK,

Yet another intriguing piece on the players of the playground. There are many cheer leaders around too. As you have aptly put it, Muhyiddin is just a ding dong, neither here nor there or anywhere for that matter. Daim is always diam because he is a tin penuh.

However, your seventh paragraph of a salvo is what that caused a "quake" measuring 9.9 in the Richter scale somewhere WITHIN B F Mama aka 'First Lady'-in-waiting in Putrajaya. I am sure Sdr. FFT or Cruzeiro could come up an appropriate caricature on that end result.

The thought of that first one from cruzeiro on that article on the former AG still make my stomach muscles cramped due to the continous laughter. Naughty Boy.

My take is, they should not have messed with you in the first place, YM RPK. But, since they forcefully asked for it, how could you not give when Magnanimity is literally your 'second name'. Please give them, proper and good, and Magnanimously too. Take care, Sir.

Now, unfortunately, I hate to disappoint you here. As a Banknote collector, I happen to know that RM500 and RM1,000 notes were incredibly scarce even when they were legal tender. According to Bank Negara figures:

http://www.bnm.gov.my/files/publication/msb/2008/4/pdf/1.2.pdf

At the end of 2008, there was RM75,900,000 in RM500 notes outstanding.
with RM28,700,000 in RM1,000 notes outstanding.

Then....could Bank Negara be lying.

RM3 Billion in oustanding notes. RM3 Billion in RM500 and 1000 notes split equally between the two denominations equates to 4 Million notes. Say thats all in bundles of 100 each. Thats 40,000 wads. I'd be interested to know how the hell you'd launder all that, that is effectively 1.2 tonnes of Banknotes. It seems sensationalist. However, as I have learned anything happens here with the boys at the top. But it seems a bit too far fetched to be true.

Following up on my previous statement, recently, Bank Negara commenced issuing its 4th series of Banknotes, commencing with the commemorative RM50 Banknote featuring Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Normally, when the Central Bank changes one note, they will change them all over a period of time. However, Bank Negara traditionally changes their currency notes in quick succession.

The Banknote paper is normally sourced from Giesecke and Devrient in Germany, along with the printing plates. Thats for the current series of notes. However, they have used Note Printing Australia, Canadian Banknote, De La Rue, on numerous occasions.

If what you say is true, and it is not sensationalist, if the Bank Negara announces the issue of higher denominations, in the next few months, then there is "something" serious going on. Even RM100 notes are relatively scarce. But to do that, in the present climate is tantamount to admitting that there are serious underlying inflationary pressures in the Malaysian economy.

What will the Bank Negara say when/if the RM500 notes or other higher denominations are issued. Heres the spin. Its pretty obvious.

"We have cast off the ghosts of the 1998 economic crisis, and feel confident that Malaysia has weathered the worst of the current global economic crisis. Therefore we feel it is expedient to reintroduce RM500 and RM1000 notes to smoothe the flow of commerce"

And over the course of few flights, maybe once or twice a week to Jakarta, Singapore, etc, two suitcase loads of these notes can gradually return. Commission to the customs officers would not be a problem, even 1% would keep them content for a very long time to come.

An influx of that kind of cash capital would literally cause the Ringgit to go into hyperinflationary mode. My satirical piece of the first RM5,000 note featuring Dr Mahathir may not be so far fetched after all.

Food for thought.....

ADA UDANG DI SE-BALIK BATU

Just comment on different topic, but similar subject – “dirty” I am thinking why the accused suspect in the Mongolain girl remains silent on who had instructed the call for execution of the Mongolian girl. If they believe that promises or deals made to let them walk free with new IDs, than there is a possibility that their fates will be the same as the assassin of Aquino’s husband’s murderer or the JFK’s assassin - death! And the mastermind behind remain a mystery. The best way to keep a secret is to erase the witnesses; the accused who are currently on trial.

How are they going do that? The man behind the scene can tricked the accused currently on trial that they will walk free no matter what just with the new IDs but not knowing that they will be eventually hanged after being drugged and will be too late for them to defend. The man behind the scene will walk free. Crucial witnesses erased and the public may think that justice has been done.

There are so many dirty tricks can be done by corrupted and powerful crooks, so do not count this out.

That you have to give credit to TUN la. He discontinued the use of RM500 and RM1000 denomination and legally that 1.2 tonne of money just became high quality paper. The Government no longer promise to pay the holder of such notes, unless like Pete revealed, it has to be brought home and send to BNM with the authority of the Finance Minister.

Hmmm! Just wondering which vault is this 1.2 tonne of paper is stashed? No,it is not the country money but it is UMNO's I think. How UMNO got so much money? Ask UMNO la.

actually, i heard about this daim fella way back in 1997 when someone told me about it becos they work for daim's company, then. But the figure i heard was enormous, that is why he bought so many banks in SA and travelling there so often. It is true when MT say that TDM was angry with daim becos daim siphoned loads of money outside of malaysia. That is why there was a split then between UEM and all the cronies way back then. So, the story has been proven to be true after all.

Sigh, don't you think that a good name is better than billions when we depart from this world, when it was gotten through crooked means????

With additional RM3 billion, Diam is still not the richest politician yet.

My Ranking of the top 5 richest politicians

1.tun mamak – richest politician family
2.tahi – almost the whole of state belonged to his family
3.diam – the finance minister with good appetite for $
4.najis – the arm man. Next, purchase nuclear weapon for defence needs!
5.bodowi/sil – need extra 2 years to catch up with the rest before pension.

Dear Mr Smith(hope you read this) and Folks of the MTnet Community,

Sorry to intrude again. What Mr. Smith inferred is not far from the truth.

A Malay Muslim friend of mine ( and I trust him) who works in the cargo handling section at the airport(sorry, I am not telling which) who saw this Diam Daim walking briskly carrying two heavy luggage bags towards a private jet waiting all revved up to take off.

What was inriguing to him and his friends at work was why would Diam Daim carrying the bags, himself. But he was not alone, Folks. There were nearly 8 burly and menacingly looking men but struggling to handling huge 2 BAGs each who reached that plane, first.

After those 8 men loaded the heavy bags onto the plane, 4 boarded while 4 returned. Then, came this suddenly 'FAT LOOKING' Diam Daim, with a 'very serious and busily thinking about the country face', walking briskly towards the plane carrying those bags mentioned. Two of the earlier burly and menacingly looking men were also carrying 4 more heavy bags again and they too boarded the plane.

As they sauntered on the tarmac towards the waiting jet plane, something fell out of Diam's coat's inner fat pocket which was caught by these observing guys. But that Diam Daim 'diamly' continued walking although he was aware of it b'cos folks, he turn to see, at that precise moment, though he still continued sauntering towards that 'waiting' plane.

To cut the long story short, it turn out to be a roll of RM500 notes totalling
RM50,000 that my friend went and picked after that jet hurriedly jetted off from there. Those guys were flabbergasted and concluded that the rest of the contents of those bags contained nothing but MONEY and not that Diam Daim's change of underwear, either.

But, being Original Malays and True Muslims, those GEMS of the Muslim Society felt that they should not hand it over to the authorities nor pocket it themselves. Instead, they distributed the sum to several orphanages of different Faith, mind you that. They felt, in their simple but advanced mind, that if they were spend it, it is deemed, Haram. They also felt that if Diam Daim spends it, it is also deemed as HARAM. But, if it goes to those helpless children of GOD, then and only then, it is HALAL.

Just hearing that brought tears welling up my eyes, who, is otherwise also a very hardened graduated from the School of Hard Knocks. These are Malay Muslims who are best described as Darlings of Society. Just for your information, Folks. Take care.

Does anyone actually realise the physical impact of an extra RM3 Billion on the M1 (circulating coins and notes) in Malaysia, and the havoc this can do to the economy. In fairness, in inflationary terms, that money has lost half its value since 1997 in real terms.

Referring above to the figures from Bank Negara, there is only RM72 Million outstanding in RM500 and RM1,000 notes.

Beyond that, I see the actual macroeconomic impact of this. Effectively speaking its an economic war, declared by UMNO on the Rakyat of Malaysia.

External factors merely make the problem worse.

Inflation is a symptom of too much money chasing too few goods. The subsidy systems for rice, chicken, sugar will lead to scarcity, as the money supply will be unable to keep up.

We THEN throw in RM3 Billion in these 500 and 1,000 notes.

We wonder why the Ringgit is not freely traded?

We wonder why Mahathir treated Anwar the way he did when he said "no bailouts".

With this in mind, shall we fast forward to the 13th General Election in 2012/2013?

"UMNO/BN shall say - you voted for the opposition, and the economy is in shambles because we did not have the strength, or the mandate from the people to secure investment and confidence. So as you sow, so shall ye reap"

This is not bed news. Its lethal. I'm off to the money changer to buy some Sing Dollars. Thats the Deutschmark of this region.

These people are of course too young to remember that more than 30 years ago PAS was similarly tricked by Umno -- and after almost three years they left Barisan Nasional when they realised that Umno was not sincere about Islam but only spoke about Islam to attract PAS into joining Barisan Nasional.

no wonder PAS youth scrambles up the media with this issue....if that is the case than i'd prefer seeing these individuals who keeps on harping on this issue either be voted out by the member or they leave the party

sooner or later PAS is gonna have to choose between their ignorant and stubborn members or their long term success with their new friends in PR.

To KW Waran : Mein Gott mein Gott mein Gott! There must be some security camera videos laying around somewhere taken by the security cams at the airport. Then again, if this happened in 1997-1998, then such evidence may have been lost.

Maybe not all of the RM 3 billion are in the RM500 and RM1000 notes. Surely, the money was used to set up the IC Banks (International Commercial Bank), the Daim established bank. They have branches all over Africa, and I think even in the Balkans, Central Asia, India/ South Asia and SE Asia (Indonesia).

Oh, and the best curency to buy is NOT the Sing Dollar, its too closely linked to the floundering US Dollar and has no strong long term fundamentals to speak off. Get the Euro, more stable in the long run.

frankly I don't think RM3 billion will destabilize the ringgit. I may be wrong but isn't the ringgit in circulation in trillions?

What leads to hyperiflation is the uncontrolled printing of money as what is happening in Zimbabwe now. Umno hasn't resorted to that...yet.

Just made some more calculations. This is a bit analytical.

Banknote paper, as used in RM500 and RM1000 notes weighs about 85 grams per square meter.

We are talking 4 Million Banknotes here, assuming an equal split of each denomination.

RM1000 notes measure around 16cm x 8.5cm

So thats 136sq cm.

1 square meter equals 10,000sq cm, and thats 85 grams.

So thats 73.53 notes per square meter, and each note therefore weighs 1.15grams

Now we are talking 4.6 tonnes of Banknotes here. I originally made a rough guess of 1.2 tonnes. Seriously, do you know what this kind of money physically looks like.

A few salient points:

1. Daim might be a thief, but hes a bit more clued up than my Grandmother, who found a wad of 1930's Banknotes which were worth piles more than face value (the poor lady was about to wander off to the Bank to cash them in, when I hauled her up to the city to auction them off). Do you seriously believe that he would allow that kind of money to lie around gathering dust, losing value against inflation. Would you?

2. Put in perspective, RM1,000 today buys the same amount as RM500 at the time of the 1997 economic crisis.

3. The only use for those Banknotes (realistically), in Malaysia was for Ang Pows, Ah Longs, Moneylaundering, Bookies, and Casinos. If I used a note like that in a First World country, like the UK, they would die of shock. Even having 50 Pound notes there gets a "look".
