By Phuah Ken Lin, NST GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has issued stop-work order to five developers in Batu Ferringhi here for polluting the environment since May.
Its president, Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman, said the developers had failed to carry out safety measures to prevent soil from the hilltop from flowing into the sea.
"Our site inspections showed that there was a lack of slope rehabilitation work by the developers thereby resulting in a large quantity of earth being washed down the slope.
"The mud accumulated on the road surface also endangered the lives of passing motorists," Zainal said after chairing a full council meeting yesterday.
Zainal said the situation became more serious particularly during the rainy season. Zainal added that the developers had also failed to build sedimentation ponds and did not have a proper drainage system to trap the mudslide.
He said the council's engineering department staff would be monitoring the sites regularly.
Zainal said the council would lift the order only when the developers comply with the requirements.

After Madhathir transfer its free port status to his homeland, Pulau Langkawi, it turns polluted in many ways.
Look at the rubbish thrown into that Sungai Pinang, the muddy coast at Gurney Drive, the hooting and carbon dioxide released by the veheicles in traffic jams.........
