GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has issued stop-work order to five developers in Batu Ferringhi here for polluting the environment since May.

Its president, Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman, said the developers had failed to carry out safety measures to prevent soil from the hilltop from flowing into the sea.

"Our site inspections showed that there was a lack of slope rehabilitation work by the developers thereby resulting in a large quantity of earth being washed down the slope.

"The mud accumulated on the road surface also endangered the lives of passing motorists," Zainal said after chairing a full council meeting yesterday.

Zainal said the situation became more serious particularly during the rainy season.

Zainal added that the developers had also failed to build sedimentation ponds and did not have a proper drainage system to trap the mudslide.

He said the council's engineering department staff would be monitoring the sites regularly.

Zainal said the council would lift the order only when the developers comply with the requirements.

High time to clear up Penang island, which is norm as Pearl of Orient.
After Madhathir transfer its free port status to his homeland, Pulau Langkawi, it turns polluted in many ways.
Look at the rubbish thrown into that Sungai Pinang, the muddy coast at Gurney Drive, the hooting and carbon dioxide released by the veheicles in traffic jams.........

Guan Eng,

Penang is already congested. There should be no more development on the island. No more new apartment blocks. All new development should be on the mainland. Change the face of worn out Butterworth and sleepy Bukit Mertajam with new development.

Guan Eng,

Agree with Temenggong.
It's high time to develop Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam
The reason Butterworth is worn out and Bukit Mertajam lack of development is that they have been supporting DAP for many years before the most recent election.
It's time to focus development on the mainland to prevent further imbalance development between Penang island and the mainland.
Seriously, past chief ministers did not put this into consideration and it's high time to correct this disparity.

Syabas, LGE and Zanial you are on the right direction. The normal practice of the former goment is to solve the problem over a cup of very expensive coffee.
