It is to the benefit of the voters that Umno does not die. Instead, Umno must be sent into the opposition for at least a term while it goes through an 'overhaul'. Then, once reformed, it can come back and can try to outbid the ruling Pakatan Rakyat government -- if it is able to.

*************************************************

In 1999, Parti Keadilan Nasional won 5 Parliament and 4 state seats in the 29 November general election. Exactly one year later, it won another state seat in the Lunas by-election. The following general election the party was practically wiped out when its president, who won the only seat, almost did not make it. Then, in the recent general election, the party bounced back with the second highest votes after Umno and a record number of seats an opposition party has ever won in Malaysian election history. It secured 31 Parliament seats against a measly one the election before.

This certainly says a lot about Malaysian elections when a party that had been classified as ‘dead’ not only bounced back but ended up leading the opposition coalition from its ‘last’ position the two elections before this (in 1999, PKR got only five seats against PAS’ 27 and DAP’s ten, and in 2004, only one against DAP’s 11 and PAS’ nine).

Today, many have written Umno off as well. They feel that Umno is in its death throes and come the next election in 2012/2013 the party will be buried for good. That is exactly what these same people said about PKR soon after the 2004 general election. But PKR did not die. It in fact bounced back stronger than before. What makes them think, therefore, that Umno is on its deathbed?

Umno is still the biggest and strongest party in Malaysia out of roughly 22 or so registered political parties. It garnered 30% of the votes and won 36% of the Parliament seats. It is also heading seven state governments against PAS’ three and DAP’s, PKR’s and PBB’s one each.

Umno’s 79 Parliament seats almost matches the 82 of the three opposition parties combined. No doubt, in West Malaysia, Umno won only 66 seats against the opposition’s 80. But Sabah and Sarawak have always been Umno’s strength because these two states contribute to 25% of the total seats and Umno always has a strong hold on Sabah and Sarawak, directly and indirectly.

No, Umno is far from dead. If it manages to reform itself it may yet bounce back stronger than ever. If you hope to kill Umno off in the next election then that will be wishful thinking. It did not happen to PKR, in spite of all the doomsday predictions, so why should it happen to Umno?

Sure, Umno may be sent into the opposition ranks together with the rest of its coalition partners in Barisan Nasional. But that will only mean Malaysia, for the first time, will have a strong opposition. And that will also mean Malaysia, for the first time, will be seeing a new federal government. That is possible. That is not wishful thinking. But for that to happen at least 15 or so Umno MPs have to cross over to Pakatan Rakyat -- plus some of the coalition partners in Barisan Nasional have to leave the ruling coalition to join the opposition coalition, which will be transformed into the new ruling coalition.

15 Umno MPs is quite possible when 13 of them are in Sabah. Even if only ten crosses over that would mean Pakatan Rakyat needs just another five from West Malaysia. And there are enough unhappy Umno MPs in West Malaysia who feel that Umno has lost its direction.

PBB, which has 14 Parliament seats in Sarawak, can be expected to stay with Barisan Nasional. But there are still four more Sarawak parties controlling 16 seats that are in ‘talking terms’ with Anwar Ibrahim. Plus there are five more non-Umno parties in Sabah that control 11 more seats.

So, getting at least 30 Barisan Nasional MPs to cross over is not that difficult. The only thing is they will not personally cross over as such. They will remain in their parties and their parties will leave Barisan Nasional and join Pakatan Rakyat. The Umno Sabah MPs, in turn, will form a new party (or revive an old party) and their party too will join Pakatan Rakyat.

And that only leaves the Umno MPs from West Malaysia. If a device can be created whereas they need not resign from Umno to join PAS or PKR but instead they can join a new (or old) party that will become a component party of Pakatan Rakyat, then Anwar Ibrahim’s 16 September deadline is no wishful thinking.

When that happens, though, Umno will be forced to reinvent itself, or will at least be embroiled in a leadership change. It will not die. And a reinvented Umno will be a stronger Umno. And when Umno becomes strong again it will no longer remain in the opposition. Instead, it will bounce back come the next election, just like PKR in the recent election, and it will retake control of the federal government.

Chances are Pakatan Rakyat, if they form the next federal government come 16 September, will be just a one-term government. They will have to invent some marvellous new strategies if they want to stay two terms. Just pointing out the wrongs of the previous government is not good enough any longer. People will soon get tired of all the blaming and finger pointing. By then Umno would have reinvented and repackaged itself to attract the voters. And that can only mean good things for Malaysia. When two parties try to outdo each other and fall over each other in trying to impress the voters, then Malaysians can only benefit.

And that is what we hope will happen come 16 September 2008. Come 16 September, Malaysia will see a two-party system emerge, both equally strong, and both trying to sell themselves to the voters with fantastic offers that the voters just can’t resist. Voters will be placed in a dilemma in trying to make their decision because both offers will be just too attractive and too good to say no to. And that will be when the voters will become smart. The voters will cleverly play one party against the other and will always come out the winner because the ‘threat’ of allowing one party to rule for a term, and the next for another term, will keep everyone on their toes.

It is to the benefit of the voters that Umno does not die. Instead, Umno must be sent into the opposition for at least a term while it goes through an 'overhaul'. Then, once reformed, it can come back and can try to outbid the ruling Pakatan Rakyat government -- if it is able to. The voters will then have two good choices to play around with. And once both know that the voters may allow each to take turns to rule, no longer will the politicians take the voters for granted, like they do now.

Five major challenges facing Malaysia's PM

(Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, fighting for his political survival since an election in March, is now weathering a storm over a steep rise in fuel prices that some say may hasten his departure.

Burdened by a soaring subsidy bill, his government raised petrol prices by 41 percent last week in a politically unpopular move that could drive inflation to a 10-year high and slow economic growth.

Following are five major challenges facing Abdullah:

ANTI-FUEL PROTESTS

- Abdullah's administration faces an acid test to quell mounting anger and, possibly, more organised street protests over the fuel price hikes.

The opposition, emboldened after a good showing in March elections, has proposed bringing 100,000 people to the city centre on July 12 to protest against the fuel hike.

This could be the country's biggest anti-government protest ever, but whether it is allowed to take place remains to be seen. Malaysia bans gatherings of five or more people without a police permit.

ECONOMIC TEST

- Abdullah, who is also the Finance Minister, will present the 2009 national budget in parliament on Aug. 29. His faces a delicate task of trying to appease voters with generous tax cuts while keeping a tight rein on the fiscal deficit.

PERCEPTION PROBLEM

- Even before the March election debacle, Abdullah was perceived to be suffering from a credibility problem after flip-flops over policy decisions.

These included the scrapping of a plan to replace Malaysia's side of the causeway to Singapore, drawing a sharp rebuke from ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad and costing the government millions of dollars in compensation to the contractor.

In addition, a ban on the sale of petrol and diesel to foreign motorists at the borders was lifted, days after it was announced last month.

"No one seems to believe him anymore," said one political analyst who declined to be named.

LEADERSHIP TEST

- Former prime minister Mahathir Mahathir Mohamad's shock resignation from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and his call for Abdullah to resign late last month has prompted speculation that festering rifts in the party could widen and speed up the premier's exit.

Abdullah has said he would defend his post as leader of UMNO at party elections in December. A win will mean that he remains prime minister.

In a face-saving measure, Abdullah could quietly arrange to hand power over to his stated successor, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak, to avoid a humiliating defeat at the December party polls.

THE ANWAR FACTOR

- Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's claim that the opposition coalition would be capable of forming the next government by mid-September will continue to unsettle Abdullah.

Anwar has said he has enough lawmakers to topple the government following the March election and was waiting for the right moment.

YM RPK,

I agree, that UMNO is not necessarily on its deathbed, but what the rakayt should now push on for, is the death of race based politics, for the idea that malaysa can only be represented by umno, chinese can only be represented by mca and indians by mic (and so forth)is morally reprehensible for it expouses the 'jaga kaum sendiri' mentality that hinders the growth of malaysia as a nation. So voters, come what may, kill off race based politics!

UNMO can become relevant again if it discards its race agenda and caters for the needs of the rakyat. At the way it’s heading the present crop of leaders seems to be playing the Trengganu chess move all over again by denying the rakyat of the five PR states federal funds and thus hoping to achieve similar results. It will be a dismal day the rakyat succumbs to such tactics.

Dear RPK,

Excellent well balanced article. We have seen however in western democracies that when the incumbent party/coalition is ousted there follows a long period of in fighting and severe dysfunction until a credible and reformed leadership and party base can then be established to challenge for government again. This would not be such a bad thing for UMNO. As for the elimination of race based politics this will take many decades to achieve and has not even been achieved in more developed or enlightened societies.

I believe UMNO while still controlling the majority of the seats will become powerless and irrelevant if the lose the federal government, unlike PKR or other opposition parties in the past elections.

UMNO is a party which breeds and promotes race priority to survive and remain relevant. It's a party that have rules for as long as MALAYSIA existed, and its the fast track route to riches. In the past, UMNO was really created in the name of Malay protectism. Now, people join UMNO hoping to get notice, make some noise and hopefully become a "somebody" and make lots of money along the way. WIthout the control of federal government, the incentive to join UMNO is gone.
Even as we speak, some are already jumping ship because as the train with the gold nuggets go south, they get of the train because its not their destination, it's not the love of the train.

The opposition on the other hand have members who join with a purpose, sacrifice themselve for blood and tears and their own expense who seeks justice and equality, much like UMNO in the old days against British in the colonial days. That why they can bounce back after the drubbing in 2004. Back then, PKR was still hanging on "free anwar issue" and don't really show much intention or direction in running a country". PAS and DAP on the other hand were spending more time cancelling each other rather than competing against BN. Only after Anwars release, such a blue print was created for PR-sadly time wasn't enough to educate the East Malaysian.

UMNO need to really ask themselves, if we are to be the opposition in the near future, will we still get new memberships in and retain our current members? OR will our members start jumping ship and take the PR train which northbound hoping for gold at the end of that journey? If it is the latter, then UMNO would close shop, because its principles and values are more filmsy than a piece of carbon paper.

Salam Abang Pete,
I had a different view of Umno viz PKR as most of the personalities behind it are tainted by corruption and mis-rules one way or another. You cannot change a thief for a thief is always a thief and the only way for Umno to rejunvenate is to recruit new personalities, but the problem lies in getting fresh, decent & honest members. I think if Pakatan Rakyat gets it right Umno should forever be banished to opposition or dies of slow death, the latter is the ideal. We the people should groom Pakatan for good government with accountabilty the key to check & balance on possible abuses. If not they should also be voted out by us in the name of Democracy.

Dear Honored and Respected RPK,

I for one would truly support this article because I've always promoted and support "Balanced Government". Absolute power corrupts absolutely.. While the PR is starting of nice and well.. there is no guarantee that it can maintain like that for the rest of the party's career. (despite what the hard-core supporter may say) We still need the BN as the opposition to provide check & balance.

However, my concern over BN is that most of the top post ppl is truly corrupted.. and not trust worthy.. can we rely on them to play the opposition rule? Who is the best candidate to bring the party around? Najib? or that Kerismuddin? or That Khairy? or Son of Dr M? I personally would prefer Ku Li.. but he is old already.. sigh..

Maybe RPK wanna give active politic a try.. by starting your own party.. and attract all those capable UMNO ppl to your party and become a strong opposition party? smilies/tongue.gif

If the Chinese and Indians voted for PAS instead of MCA, Gerakan or MIC, it simply means that the rakyat was fed up with the arrogance of the BN government and the "abang besar" attitude of the UMNO. Actully we do not care anything except that it must be an honest and fair government. So UMNO can stay. It can be the only party -without its components - ruling the country. I do not care. I only care that you honest and fair. I like the two party system - each keeping the other on its toes. It is a good development and we should encourage it.

On the oil price hike, the hike is inevitable. It is better that it is done now and not later by the PR government. The complaint is that the government did not think through the problem and then hike the price. I feel strongly that it could have used the conversion from petrol to gas in a very effective manner if only it has spent some time thinking through it. If it was a participatory decision with not just the government making the decision, it would have been less painful. Even now it is going about the wrong way to "help alleviate" the problems faced by the rakyat.

So DAP, PRK and PAS accept the hike. No need to demonstate. If the proble is not tackled today it will come back to haunt us at a later date. Now find solutions to really alleviate the sufferings of teh rakyat.

I think UMNO won't die. But they won't be back in power for at least a generation. This is because their culture is backward, ideas are aways old fashion and of course wthout corruption there is no UMNO. All these lies that the people are enduring will stay for a long time. Its so bad that whenever they open their months, the people are already suspicious. Also give another 5 to 19 years E. Malaysia will acheive adequate education and won't be so easily fooled. Of course PKR should not goof up big time otherwise they will hara kiri and generally people of Malaysia are tolerant. Otherwise how could they live with BN for so longer. Absolutely right. But, i think:-
1. AAB will not leave or be kicked out. The power of the PM is too all encompassing. He will only become stronger. My thinking is that he has gone through the toughest battle. If he should have been dropped it should have happened last month. Today he is in a stronger position.
2. I always proposed that UMNO will not fade. It will get stronger. The changes which is happening will forcefully change UMNO and the characters which go along with it. (high time anyway). These changes taking place is coming from up to the grassroots. As the rakyaat are supporting it. The mp's have to foolow. (Democracy at work). UMNO cannot go against the rakyaat. And Umno knows.(courtesy of rakyaat 080smilies/cool.gif.
3. And yes yes yes, they would be formidable opponents. However, if PR is able to provide such a clean slate of governance and bring the economic situation under control, they will have the mandate of the rakyaat and their staying power will not be uprooted. If that happens, if BN does not follow and serve the rakyaat than, only than BN will be the past, until then they are a formidable foe to PR. A good check on PR.
my two cents worth.

Umno is just the name of a party.

=========================================

Maybe not.
It isn't just a name - it embodies the spirit of apartheid, along with its brothers in crime. It is an Idea. A concept of Government.
It embodies the concept of the "divide & rule" strategy of colonialism.

Here are a few synonyms I can think of - (please tell me I'm wrong)
Drama, Subversion, Terror, Racism, NEP, Highway robbery, Greed, Envy, Decadence, Corruption, Perversion, Elitism, aristocracy, feudalism, Repression, Supression, Cruelty, Persecution, ISA, PPPA, Destruction of Malay culture, Xenophobia, Hypocrisy in "religiosity", division, enmity, hatred, bigotry, blackmail, mediocrity, sloth, gluttony .... sin.
(feel free to add on....)

Today (especially since '8smilies/cool.gif, It isn't just a name anymore- it is a very evil spirit.
Anyone who has been corrupted by this spirit and adopts it will bear these traits.
Just getting rid of the "leaders" wouldn't cut it ....

before they really know the damage that they have done

I am more concerned about the problems facing Malaysia than the problems facing our PM or UMNO. The problems of the latter are only of major concern to the vested interest of those involved. Their fate will be known in good time. We need to focus and support the people who really care about this nation and it’s people. i.e. simply good descent Malaysians.

Goodness is not a quality limited to any particular political party or religion. I just don’t see how all the current negative news and political activities are going to to help this nation’s progress.

Who is really taking care of this country while all this bickering is going on. One thing is for sure, good honest people will sleep well

I find RPK's conclusion about the opposition only harping on the wrongs of BN government quite amusing. Surely there are massive reforms that have to be undertaken and then more to take the country forward again.

My only concern is the news on PAS administration in Kedah who apparently went back on their manifesto and is proceeding with what the previous BN administration has approved. Those will be things that gives Pakatan a bad name and reduce them to a one term government. If true, I think PAS is to Pakatan what Myanmar is to ASEAN.

How could UMNO reinvent itself when the most corrupted (the ones with the most cash) will win the top posts? How could UMNO members vote freely when they join UMNO to get rich? Will the voting be any different when they are in the opposition?? I seriously doubt it.

If UMNO does rise again, the new leader will be the most corrupted, cunning and cruel.

RPK said there are 5 major pressing challenges on the PM and his Government. I like to keep it more simple and would say there are essentially only two. Yes, TWO. Look at these options -
1. Barisan ( mainly UMNO) can deliver the sweets. But at a very high cost. Their sweets are at actually paid by the rakyat. Plenty of corruption, racial discrimination, etc etc.
2. Pakatan cannot deliver at this time. No sweet. But they seem sincere, honest and trustworthy. They can be just as broke like you and me. But they look pretty decent and pursue the righteous path.
So we have this choice. The devilish sweet from the forbidden garden of Eden? Or be content with 3 simple basic meals a day without the luxurious icing and dessert? Your choice.

UMNO re-invent itself ? They'll just come up with another new pack of lies and deceit, that's all. You think they'll really turn aorund and actually serve the people with honesty and sincerity? This leopard will never change its spots. And when they are in the Opposition, they won't have the power of incumbency that they have now.If Anwar plays his cards right, UMNO will henceforth be sidelined. UMNO thinks that the country cannot do without it -- this is a whole load of bull really; the country would have been and would be so much better without the likes of UMNO!

Abang Pete,
You suggest Umno would take at least a term to reinvent and repackage themselves. Some commentators here think it could take them much longer. There is always a possibility that Umno Baru may share the same fate as UMNO (the original 1946 version).
In recent weeks, Umno leaders have said many things at meetings. Sometimes they said different things about one issue. Perhaps their differences demonstrate their own confusion about who Malays are, what Umno is, what the Constitution actually says about Malaysians, what the government should be doing for the people.
The greatest challenge of all could be internal politics. Therefore, we could see another split within Umno (ten-year itch?). Perhaps this time, repackaging could result in more than two parts.

UMNO definitely can bounce back but not MCA,MIC and Gerakan.UMNO alone cannot form the government,it has to depend on parasites such as MCA,MIC and Gerakan to help capture the power to rule.

Unless UMNO is accepted by non-malay,if not one vote for MCA,MIC and Gerakan is equivalent to one vote for UMNO.We know who to vote comes the next GE.

UMNO will only survive if the party reformed otherwise it will be a wishful thinking that they will remain in power forever.

Currently they did try to reform but it is too slow and not good enough. We need to see the following happen;

1) Reform Judiciary system
2) Reform Government. Get rid of those corrupted and ineifficient ministers, deputy ministers, Chief Ministers, MBs, state Exco members and senior government officers.
3) Reform Anti Corruption Agency
4) Reform Police force
5) Revamp government procument policy and procedure to be more transpareny
6) Get rid of the APs and the minister who want to extend them, remove protection to national cars and allow other car manufacturer to buy over
7) Introduce election for city mayor and city council for all cities and towns in Malaysia
smilies/cool.gif Revamp public transportation system especially in major cities
9) Revamp subsidies to ensure those poor benefitted and the richs have to pay without subsidies
10)Make Petronas more transparent and we want to know where the money goes

Sending BN-UMNO out to the opposition is truely beneficial for the people. That will keep their hands off the nation resources and at the same time BN-UMNO can keep their know-how and knowledge on stealing the nation wealth. Being in the opposition side, the BN-UMNO can truely make the best use of those know-how and knowledge to check the PR side. PR side, while in power, will have very few chance to outsmart the true master of corruption and thiefs. Have you watch the "Catch me if you Can".
People needs to actively excercise the power of check-and-balance. That is what make the people the boss of this country.
Expecting the emergance of a do-all-good and all-powerful executive branch, while people oblivion of their rights such as freedom of expression, is another wishful thinking.

One thing RPK might have forgotten is that BN managed to hold to slim 50.3% popular votes in the last election were due to the gerrymandering and cheating. Once PR takes over the country, I bet the first thing they are going to do is to revamp the EC to make it a really independent body and to free up our media.

I am willing to bet all my money that if EC can be made an independent body and in a free media environment, chances of BN to get back into power will be very-very slim in the next election. Unless of cause PR new government is embroil with a scandal in magnitude of Altantuya or Submarine commission proportion.

Right now UMNO is the leading brand but with eroding market share.

UMNO needs to be re-branded, otherwise whatever cosmetic change it's going through now, is only a temporary survival strategy.

Re-brand..............a totally brand new identity!

The only way in the immediate future for UMNO to reinvent itself is to throw out this ketuanan ideology, the NEP policy, and race discrimination policy.

This is only for the immediate future. Of course, when the master race has achieved more than 80% of the population, it can jolly well tell the non's to leave if they are not happy here. As it is, UMNO still continues to practise its race discrimination policy. The Star reported that JPJ recruited less than 5% of non-bumiputeras into its new workforce recently.

Even if UMNO is reinvented, I still don't trust them enough, until my death. You know UMNO politicians, always playing around, masquerading their true intentions with a seemingly good publicity and sneaky ploys. UMNO has given me a deep impression that UMNO is forever harping on ketuanan Melayu and Malays' special privileges. Without these, what will they fight for now? Fight for well-being of Malaysians! Hah! When the cat grow horns la! Selfish people will never change. You want them to change this now, let go all their money making machines? Money and power is their master. Very unlikely because of the content of the brains of people inside UMNO. Anyone has any credible qualifications aside from that Oxford back-door fellow? Although Pakatan Rakyat is not perfect, they are at least better than BN for now. So, until BN really can come back sincerely to win us, but I doubt, will take years (perhaps another 20 years?) to change people's perception of them, I will stay with Pakatan Rakyat.

I believe in a true democratic nation it is essential to have a very strong or equally strong opposition, like in the case of England and the US. Again, going by the principle that absolute power corrupts absolutely. It could be a totally revamped BN which gives equal say to the other component parties or a new opposition led by RPK. These checks and balances are necessary for equilibrium.

Right now I trust the ideals and good principles of PR but even then things could change over time. The coalition could get shaky with PAS pushing Syariah laws for all PR states as in today's papers, etc. The temptations could be too great for our young idealistic new leaders. But they are all human and it is understandable if they falter. It is our fault that we allowed BN to succumb to tempations to the extend it is today. Why didn't we have the guts to do something earlier? We allowed 50 years to slip by and the can of worms were all over the place, having multiplied and grown.

But it is not too late or better late than never. Our eyes that were once closed for fear of rocking the boat are now opened and there is renewed courage in everyone to make a difference for the good of the whole.

What is need is not about racial party. I personally do not think racial party will not last. If they manage to survive now, they will not in future. People are more educated, easier to access information, information can be easily shared either immediate or later.

So for those who think they can get away stroking the racial tension to gain popular, please wait for your judgement day.

Well, well, well just imagine three component of PR having three conflicting and different ideology and direction. Pas on it's Islamic state agenda, DAP a Chinese based party is fighting for level playing field, meritocracy ala Singapore style (which in fact marginalised their minority) and PKR neither here nor there policy thus I don’t know what they stand for. Luckily all of this squabbling and hypocrisy came out in the open well before 16/9/2008 that is when/if/may/dreaming to be the government of the day, as their differences would translate into a recipe for disaster. Hello if you all really want to be a good government please grow up and act accordingly, this is not a game of monopoly that you can do what you want, you all are dealing with real people on (bread and butter) and (flesh and blood) and (do or die) issue involving millions of people future. If this the sort of people that supposed to be the saviour I might as well stick to the present regime at least I know who are the enemy at the gate.
