KUANTAN, June 10 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government is prepared to deduct up to 30 per cent of the allowances of state executive councillors and state assemblymen as part of an austerity drive in the wake of a rise in fuel prices, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said Tuesday.
He said the matter would be discussed at the meeting of the state executive council Wednesday, but added that the state would seek the approval of the federal government before making a decision.
Adnan spoke to reporters after he had launched AirAsia's flight service between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan.
Commenting on the fuel price hike, he said it was necessary for the government to explain to the people why it had to raise fuel prices and restructure the fuel subsidy.
"We should not compare our country with the Arab nations because they source their oil from the desert while we have to conduct seabed exploration which costs much higher," he said.
