This time around, however, while the Malays more or less maintained their 50:50 status, more than half the Chinese voters and more than 80% the Indian voters swung over to Pakatan Rakyat. And this was what caused the swing or Tsunami on 8 March 2008.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Malaysia Today

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad made the historical announcement that he is quitting Umno in front of supporters affiliated with diverse political parties. It was a strategic move, in line with his objective to drive home the message on the importance of Malay unity to protect the interest of the future generation.

The crowd cheered when Dr Mahathir took a dare (from PAS Jerlun Area deputy president Ismail Wan Teh) and announced he is quitting the party. Some gave him a standing ovation after listening to an hour-long talk on “Position of Malays After the 12th General Election” at Star City Hotel in Alor Star on May 19.

They appeared to understand the rational behind Dr Mahathir’s drastic action. The event organised by the Kedah Malay Assembly Hall (KMAH) attracted more than 1,500 people from various political parties and non-government organisations. Dr Mahathir said apolitical bodies like KMAH could provide a platform to unite the Malays, and act as pressure group for the Malays.

“Unity has always been our strength,’’ he said. If the Malays did not unite under Umno in 1946, they would not have gained the strength to resist Malayan Union during the British occupation. Dr Mahathir said the present generation has benefited from the struggles of the previous generation. “If we support a leader who could ruin our race, the future generation will condemn us for making them victims,’’ he said. Dr Mahathir said the time has come to take drastic action, like quitting the party en masse to force Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to step down.

The impact of Dr Mahathir’s decision to quit was so great that it virtually shook the nation and Umno. Even Dr Mahathir’s family members were caught by surprise. Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said even his mother, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, had no idea his father would resort to such a drastic measure that day.

Mukhriz said Dr Mahathir has a knack for springing a surprise, even on the family, when he makes drastic moves in politics. “It caught us (the family members) by surprise when my father announced that he is resigning as the Prime Minister and party president in 2002 (Dr Mahathir handed over the mantle to his hand-picked successor Abdullah in 2003),’’ he said.

Ismail, the PAS man who dared Dr Mahathir to quit, doubted that the former premier made an impromptu decision to quit. “We can see it coming in his speech. I merely prodded him to say what is on his mind. He has explained at length during the speech on actions that need to be taken,’’ he said.

Some Umno leaders, however, did not respond kindly, as they felt that Dr Mahathir’s action would actually split and weaken Umno especially since he has asked other members to follow suit to send a strong message to Abdullah. Many could not “read” what Dr Mahathir is up to. They are under the impression that Dr Mahathir is out to ruin Umno out of frustration because his attempts to pressure Abdullah to step down have failed. It is learnt that some MPs who are contemplating to cross over to Pakatan Rakyat would use the Mahathir factor as an excuse to convince their constituents that they need to jump ship as even the former premier had lost confidence in Abdullah.

Universiti Utara Malaysia political lecturer Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said it is high time Umno check the “yes man” culture. He said it has reached a point where the leaders are seen as hypocrites. “In front of Abdullah they (the leaders) tell him they support him, but behind him they say nasty things,’’ he said. Prof Mohamed Mustafa believes Dr Mahathir is resorting to drastic action to save Umno, and not ruin it.

“It is widely reported that Pakatan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is aggressively wooing Barisan MPs to cross over. Anwar may make a strategic move in July when Umno is at the weakest, as members’ attention would be focused on branch elections. It would be disastrous for Umno if snap parliamentary elections had to be called during that period, as the members would be divided because of party elections. Dr Mahathir probably saw it coming and felt the need to jolt Umno leaders to reality and act fast to prevent a political coup,’’ he said.

Prof Mohamed Mustafa believes Dr Mahathir is making tactical moves to save the party, as he had advised those who quit Umno not to join the opposition. Dr Mahathir is probably calling the shots to check Anwar from toppling the Barisan Nasional government.

Anwar was recently quoted as saying that a no confidence vote against Prime Minister Abdullah was the best option to topple the ruling party. Despite Anwar openly stating his intention to topple the Barisan government, Abdullah is not seen as implementing effective strategies to stop Anwar from staging a political coup.

Some observers say asking members to quit would make the party weaker, not stronger. But, if it can be compared to a chess game, Dr Mahathir is actually making tactical moves to check Anwar who is trying to “check mate” the Barisan government. Dr Mahathir has effectively removed some of the “pawns” on the Barisan side by asking members to quit, with the hope that the “knights” and “bishops” (as in the leaders) would make tactical moves to strengthen the fort. But unfortunately the knights and bishops appear to be making moves only to protect the “king” (the leader).

Dr Mahathir is now leaving it to the “pawns” (grass root members) to check Pakatan Rakyat’s advances. There is strong speculation that Anwar may be able to “check-mate” the Barisan government in a matter of weeks. It remains to be seen if Dr Mahathir, who is popularly known as Che Det, succeeds in his attempt in summoning the grass roots to oust Abdullah and “check-mate” Anwar.

The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club has described as baseless the claim by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that BN MPs from Sabah will cross over to the opposition by Sept 16.

The club’s deputy chairman, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin, said the concerns raised by BN Sabah MPs in the Dewan Rakyat should not be misconstrued as a wish to switch to the opposition fold.

“Our loyalty is clear and unquestioned, what we voiced out in Parliament was for the best interests of the people in the state. The opposition are trying to take advantage of the situation by manipulating certain issues,” he said in response to Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh’s recent statement that Anwar’s goal of wooing Sabah BN MPs to cross over will not be realised with the way the federal government is actively tackling the issue at grassroots level.

Bung Moktar also commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi for the federal government’s incentive package to the state including an additional allocation of RM1 billion. “We hope the allocation is spent within the designated time period and reach the target groups while priority is given to critical projects,” he said.

*************************************************

And that is what is wrong with this entire episode. ‘Unity’, to Umno, means to unite under the banner of Umno. If the Malays unite under Pakatan Rakyat then this does not translate to unity, even if there are more Malays in Pakatan Rakyat then there are in Umno.

Umno boasts a membership of 3.5 million members. But everyone knows that the 3.5 million members do not exist. To become a Wakil Rakyat you must first become an Umno division leader, as is the popular perception (though this may not necessarily be so -- as some have become Wakil Rakyat while not holding the top position in the division). And to become a division leader you must first become a branch leader. So, many set up their own branches with them as the branch leader and their own family members and office staff as ‘branch members’.

In short, many branches are set up with just one man while the rest of the ‘members’ are ‘injected’ just to make up the numbers and to satisfy the minimum requirement to qualify as branch. Most times the branches can’t even get the required quorum for a meeting to be called and the meetings are merely ‘paper’ meetings, ‘held’ to prevent the branches from being closed down. And it is not Umno alone that suffers from this predicament.

Umno admits that only 51% of the Malay voters voted for it in the 8 March 2008 general election. That means 49% voted for Pakatan Rakyat. Actually this is not that large a drop over the previous general elections. The Malays who voted for Umno this time around is not much different from the elections before that. So how can Umno say that the Malays are now not as united as before? The Malays who voted for Umno, as opposed to the Malays who voted against Umno, remain almost the same. If the Malays are not united now then they were not united before. This can actually be translated to mean that the Malays were never united from the beginning. In short, things have sort of remained the same -- no change.

So what’s all this ‘the Malays are now not united and we need to find ways to reunite the Malays’ talk? It is utter bullshit, a campaign of misinformation to frighten the Malays into thinking that in the past they were never as split as they are now and, therefore, they need to come back to Umno and reunite under Umno or else the future of the Malays would be bleak. Actually this is not true one bit.

What happened in the 8 March 2008 general election is this. The Malays have ALWAYS been ‘split’ or ‘disunited’, to echo Umno’s choice of words. Half the Malays normally vote for Umno and the other half for the opposition. This has more or less always been so and was also so in the recent general election. It is the Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc., who have always been the ‘problem’. 70% of the Chinese and 90% of the Indians would normally vote for the ruling party -- and we need not even talk about the very disappointing (and maybe bodoh as well) Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc., who gave 30 of the 31 Parliament seats in Sarawak and 24 of the 25 Parliament seats in Sabah to Barisan Nasional.

This time around, however, while the Malays more or less maintained their 50:50 status, more than half the Chinese voters and more than 80% the Indian voters swung over to Pakatan Rakyat. And this was what caused the swing or Tsunami on 8 March 2008. So we need not talk about Malay unity. Malays have never been united and will never be. Malays will always be split 50:50 between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat. Look what happened in Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor. It is in Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor where the ‘damage’ was the greatest. And in these states the Chinese and Indians form about half or more than half (Penang) the voters.

The bottom line is: the Malay vote did not shift that much. It is the Chinese and the Indians that we need to talk about. That was where the shift was greater.

In short, the Chinese and Indians have always been ‘united’, if we wish to use that word. But they were ‘united’ under MCA, Gerakan, MIC, PPP, etc. And because they had always been ‘united’, the 50:50 Malay split did not harm Barisan Nasional much. But this time around the Chinese and Indians decided that instead of being ‘united’ under Chinese and Indian parties like MCA, Gerakan, MIC, PPP, etc., (which basically means united within their own race), they decided to ‘unite’ with the Malays. And herein lies Barisan Nasional’s problem.

For the first time, the Malays no longer united amongst themselves and the Chinese amongst themselves and the Indians amongst themselves (like how the Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc., still are). For the first time, the Malays, Chinese and Indians decided to unite across racial boundaries and as Malaysians under the common, non-race banner of Pakatan Rakyat. And this is a game Barisan Nasional does not know how to play and at the moment can’t play when their parties have the words ‘Malay’, ‘Chinese’ and ‘Indian’ in them (save for Gerakan and PPP though they are still perceived as Chinese and Indian parties respectively).

This, in reality, is the crux of the whole issue. No, the Malays are not NOW spilt (they always were split 50:50 from before). No, the Malays have NOT lost political power (there are 122 Malay Members of Parliament now, higher than before). The crux of the whole issue is: the Chinese and Indians are the ones who are actually ‘split’ or ‘disunited’ -- to use Umno’s terminology of the problem. But they split from their fellow-Chinese and fellow-Indians to unite with their fellow-Malays. So, is this ‘split’ so bad? What used to be Malay-Malay (in both Umno and the opposition) and Chinese-Chinese (in MCA and Gerakan) and Indians-Indians (in MIC and PPP) is now Malay-Chinese-Indians in Pakatan Rakyat. That, for sure, is a ‘problem’, but a beautiful problem. But it is only a problem for Barisan Nasional. It is not a problem for Malaysia.

Actually, Umno has another problem -- and which is not that the Malays are split. Umno’s problem is that Umno is split, internally. On one side Umno has Team A -- which is Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (President); Syed Hamid Albar (Deputy President); Hishamuddin Hussein, Muhammad son of Muhammad and Shahrir Samad (the three Vice-Presidents); and Ezam Mohd Nor (Youth Leader). On the other side Umno has Team B -- which is Najib Tun Razak (President); Muhyiddin Yassin (Deputy President); Ali Rustam, Shafiee Afdal and Rahim Thambi Chik (the three Vice-Presidents); and Mukhriz Mahathir (Youth Leader). And, to add to Umno’s problems, it also has Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s Team C (we don’t know yet the rest of the line-up).

That is what is bugging Umno, plus the uncertainty of Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament crossing over to Pakatan Rakyat to form the new federal government. So they raise the ‘Malay unity’ issue to camouflage the real issue. It is but a mere smokescreen to cloud the real issue. And they talk about increasing the 10% scholarship for non-Malays to 45% so that the Malays become alarmed. They don’t really want to do that. They just talk about it so that the Malays will get worried that their children will no longer receive scholarships since it now has to go to the non-Malays. And they hope that the Malays will all rush back to Umno and the defections will not happen. And the same goes for the ‘goodies’ that they are promising Sabah and Sarawak. They are, after all, only promises and promises can be broken once you are assured you will not lose power.

Will all these smokescreens work? Time will tell. Of course, it will all depend on whether Malaysians can still be easily fooled. Here’s hoping they no longer can. But then you will never know. There is always a sucker born every second, as they say.

Whatever way you see it, the objective is to use the malay to further the small picture of UMNO. Talking about the country, ask UMNO to account for the Petronas billions of ringgit, constructing monuments that have no value to the rakyat, the deplorable police and billions spent on defence.

The Malays are split because there is a huge difference between those selected few who get very generous handouts anfd freebies from the Government and those majority who do not. The Chinese and the Indians never get these freebies at all (maybe the Tan Sri and selected few under TDM and the present PM). The splits are not politically based, not religion nor racial. Essentially the splits arose because of the power it yields and the access to the billions of ringgit awaitng the winners. To hell with the direction of this country. To deeper hell with the rakyat. When you sit at the top in Putrajaya, you have the passport to all the finer and luxurious things in like. Forget whether UMNO is dead. Forget Baraisan. Forget the religion. Forget your skin colour. The Ringgit alone says it all for everybody.

Abang Pete,
I had the same line of thinking as you about the red herring 45% scholarship offer to the Non Malays. Suddenly out of the blue Umno fished out an offer too hard to believe for they are known to be stingy to the Nons before. Truly this scumbags are nothing but Satanic always scheming to deny benefits in the name of Ketuanan, NEP and whatnot. I wish the other 50% Malays who voted for the Opposition wpuld join hand with fair minded Malaysians to banish them to hell once and for all. TOTALLY PISSED!

The chinese and indians have been supportive of BN simply because they want to be seen as cooperative in politics and working together with the main malay party. However this time around they had enough of it!

Malays have never been united from the beginning and will never be in future too as their character does not allow it. Umno was a minority party when it started whereas it was KMM that was the largest malay party but which the British did not want to negotiate with.

All these years the disunity was camoflaged because the chinese and indians were supporting BN. And Pas as another malay party was always there.

Now the chinese and indians, and east malaysians, have found another acceptable 'malay' party to work with, and the good news is there is no turning back. That means the end of umno.

This means for malays to be 'united' once again they have no choice but to join PKR or Pas but under a new 'social contract' which is devoid of ketuanan and NEP.

I think that most umnomalays will come around and join PR while the rest of the bitter diehards will just fade away, just like KMM.

We can infer that, pushed to the edge, the chinese and indians killed BN, and created PR. The Moorthy body snatching incident should never have happened! But I guess umno don't know politics.

My questions are as follows:

1) Malays need to be united under UMNO, for what purpose? To go against the non Malays!

2) No calls are made for the unity of Indians and Chinese by their respective parties. Can we presume then, there is fear for such calls to be made?

3) If Indians and Chinese parties were to make those calls, will it be misconstrued as calls against the Malays?

4) If Indians and Chinese parties in the opposition were to make such calls, will they be charged under sedition?

5) Is the right to call for unity of one's race belongs only to UMNO?
If that's so, can we have relevant sections spelt out under our laws?

MIC works on the same modus operandi. In actual fact the whole party stands on stilts of party heads who created the branch based on their close friends. And these people never involve themselves in the actual workings of the party. Consequently the actual people who are active are chairman of the branch and above. The rest of the sleeping members do not play a role in the party. They can support anybody or any national issues which will not effect the party or the nation. It is this small group of people who sway the country with their whims and fancies. This is the problem with party politics westminster style. So malays rushing into UMNO will not happen and defections not happening is not related.
My suggestion is we need not worry too much about the rakyaat in relation and in respect of UMNO. The malays are not stupid. They have indicated again and again that they are not. It is this few people who are creating the smokescreen etc. As long as UMNO does not join forces with all the parties it has and form a multi race party. It is doomed. It has to up the PR and even have non-malay as a deputy. (which is impossible even to think about). BN has all the structure to do so as compared to PR. Anything they do now which does not work on a multi race party is doomed to failure. I think it is safe to say. The Rakyaat have spoken.

It is simple logic why UMNO is calling for Malay unity, instead of Barisan parties calling for Chinese and Indians unity. Because UMNO knows an overwhelming majority Chinese and Indians will never return to Barisan! We refuse to bow to Ketuanan Melayu any longer!

So UMNO knows, the only way it can stay in power in the next elections, is to get the Malays from PR parties to support it.

Good analysis RPK.

Guess those in UMNO and the 4th floor boys aren't that dumb after all (or maybe they just got lucky). TO win back the support of the Chinese and Indian takes more time or maybe impossible with Sammy and OKT there and their own internal struggle) to tilt back the power to BN. It's easier to get some of the 50% malays over by playing the racist card to get back the power and create discontent among the race.

Only worry is that it still backfires, the malays wouldn't switch, and what is created is real hatred and further anger among the malays in their camp who controls the "gangster like" police and FRUs unleashing hell on the public.

I hope the UN and other independent world bodies are keeping an eye on malaysia and ready to provide assistance when neccessary. I hope saudara Anwar through his good international political popularity can garner the support for such assitances.....

It is the Chinese and Indian who have to be united, in order to get a fair deal in Malaysia. With 40% of the population, it needs only 20% of the Malays to vote with them to form the government.

So a powerful UMNO is not in the interest of the non-Malays. It is better for the non-Malays to support a multiracial partial like PR, even if the support for the party comes from only 20% of the Malay population.

A powerful UMNO has dominated and oppressed the non-Malays for 50 years, the more powerful UMNO becomes, the more unreasonable it becomes. And an UMNO that seeks more power by proposing more radical Malay Supremacy agenda will only further oppress the non-Malays.

It is then suicide for non-Malays to support any party affiliated with a powerful Malay Supremacy party like UMNO.

UMNO battle cry is their promise to the Malays that they will suppress the non-Malays. What the f**k are the non-Malays thinking of, when they voted for BN.

Giving UMNO access to the nation's resources will only strengthen their corrupt self serving leadership. They will use the country's resources and the taxpayers (non_Malays money) to corrupt the Malays in this country and make them more racist and intolerant.

Because UMNO preaches a racist agenda, the more racist and intolerant the Malays in this country becomes, the stronger UMNO grows. So in order for them to remain in power, they will continue to the fan the racist agendas and race and religious intolerances.

UMNO will continue its ways until, the country become a Taliban state.

The non-Malays needs to see that UMNO is not the moderate Malay party that it used to be. Because it wants to be the big bully that it is, it will continue to pander to the radical Malay agendas then the less popular moderate Malay agendas.

I dont think so..UMNO MPs dont have any basic struggle principles. They will only jump to other ships of the other ships are bigger and more luxury..

...with rebate. (very small amount of rebate)

they (the ministers!) get the rebate for their kids if they buy each of their kids a perodua kancil. their kids use their dad's money to fuel up the car. their dad's money of course claimable as they are ministers. ****...

i use RM50 for my motorbike fuel every month. with the new price, it will be around RM70 monthly and i will get rebate RM10 for each month (RM120 per year). That means, I still have to pay extra RM10... itu belum kira makan minum susu anak etc etc... for sure prices will hike one! I wonder why they getting arrogant even after the election result like this. They didnt get the message.. WE RAKYAT ARE SUFFERING. WE DONT WANT MORE SUFFERINGS PLEASE...

RPK, A great analysis of what bugs UMNO Malays of West Malaysia!

However, as you noted:

Disappointing perhaps, but certainly not bodoh. What East Malaysians did was what they always done before, that is they voted for Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc., whose parties are now components of BN.
People may ask: “Why then, when their development has lagged under decades of BN and UMNO rule, did the East Malaysians give the BN so many seats in parliament?”

First the local parties in Sabah and Sarawak are homegrown; the opposition parties are not and are seen to represent the interests of peninsular Malaysians. Until the opposition parties establish roots in Eastern Malaysia they will continue to have limited traction amongst the electorate.

Second, everyday Sabahans and Sarawakians worry that voting for the opposition may result in the loss of vital development grants and projects for their states. …… they feel their needs are more likely to be addressed as part of the governing coalition than the opposition.

Quote from The Kingmakers: Sabah, Sarawak and the 12th Malaysia General Elections, http://www.malaysia-today.net/...w/7598/84/

How PR proposed policies can address their needs will determine their support for PR.

[let me try again. part of quote disappeared earlier]

A great analysis of what bugs UMNO and the Malays of West Malaysia.

However, as you noted:
and we need not even talk about the very disappointing (and maybe bodoh as well) Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc., who gave 30 of the 31 Parliament seats in Sarawak and 24 of the 25 Parliament seats in Sabah to Barisan Nasional.

Disappointing perhaps, but certainly not bodoh. What East Malaysians did was what they always done before, that is they voted for Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, etc. and those parties are now components of BN.

People may ask: “Why then, when their development has lagged under decades of BN and UMNO rule, did the local parties, give the BN so many seats in parliament?”

……Voter education workshops with citizens in Eastern Malaysia reveal that they feel their needs are more likely to be addressed as part of the governing coalition than the opposition.
Quote from The Kingmakers: Sabah, Sarawak and the 12th Malaysia General Elections
http:// www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/7598/84/

In other words, how proposed policies can address the needs of East Malaysians will determine their support in the future. So Anwar and others (including UMNO) will visit and discuss. Hopefully, they chose PR!
Then they will show they are not bodoh, just slow to choose PR.

Malaysia does not have leaders with leadership qualities. Most leaders are selfish and inward looking. They actually become leaders so that they can enrich themselves. That is they need to play race, partisan politics and talk like a racist.

In the wake of globalization, all this will only affect the country and the Raayat. Malaysia will be left behind by these selfish leaders.

Malaysia may become Zimbabwee one day. That is my true fear.

definitely disappointing. but bodoh??? likely so since most of us here have purposefully been kept bodoh by the state administration with the co-operation of BN.

strange as it may seem but there's still a large number of voters living in areas which are only accessible by river. don't believe it? why do you think we need helicopters and longboats (one even sank!!) to ferry ballot boxes?

I am from Sarawak and I agree totally when you call Sabahans and S'kians BODOH as they have been these past many GE's since 1963 - with the exception of the Ming Court affair and a couple of frights for the BN along the way.

Because of the gerrymandering of ALL of our constituencies, the BN seats are forever secured with 5000 (or less) voters Malay/Melanau/Bidayuh/Iban majority areas whereas the OPPOSITION areas of Chinese and mixed have voters averaging between 15-30,000!

No where else in the world is this being practised.

I can safely say that 85% of urban Chinese, maybe 50% of the rural ones; 40% of all Ibans, 30% of all Bidayuhs and probably 15% of the Malays are supporters of the OPPOSITION at all the elections but they cannot translate all these into wins for them! (Except for one or two urban areas.)

These guys are therefore NOT BODOH, probably that's why "cahaya" didn't like that word.

So sad and pathetic isn't it? Also from the past record the non-Chinese are almost always prone to change their minds overnight, and the Chinese similarly will do so over gambling and making a few dollars more.

If you want to call us bodoh, go ahead please - I don't mind. We all are actually.

The sense of urgency to change is just not there. East Malaysia will remain unmoved and unchanged.

However who knows what the latest hikes might bring?

UMNO Baru is deceptively using the slogan, 'Malay unity', in its attempt to continue hoodwinking the Malays. UMNO as always, is creating some imaginary threat to prolong its political hegemony against the people, and to continue with its nefarious activities at the expense of every Malaysian.

A lot of Malays by now must have awoken to see through UMNO's many evil schemes, and see a divisive slogan for what it is. My malay brothers and sisters, please be aware of slogans like 'Malay unity' that might appeal to some basal racial instinct. Umnoputras are working on that instinct to continue their mindful segregation and plunder of our beloved Malaysia.

What's with this Malay unity, Chinese unity or Indian unity? Nobody is threatening anyone here, except for UMNO. In today's global world, and as a Chinese, it would be beyond me if the dying MCA preaches for Chinese unity. It would even be laughable. They have helped UMNO screwed up Malaysia and all its god-given wealth for the past 27 years. Like RPK says, the Chinese and Indians today want to unite with the Malays in Pakatan Rakyat for a more hopeful future. A future where true multiracialism and meaningful progress become a standard; where the deserving poor would not be left out. To survive into the future, there can only be Malaysian unity, and not Umno unity.

And about the 45% scholarships to non-malays, I think it's just wayang and kulit. That sudden offer is most likely an attempt to scare the Umno Malays and placate the nons at the same time. Well, empty promises to achieve real aims, in line with their modus operandi.

The Malay vote has always been split about 50:50 so this leaves the non-Malays as kingmakers. But sadly, the kingmakers have always delivered a victory to BN at every election to the very people who marginalize them. WHY???

The answer is that the opposition have never been united except for a few occasions, notably in 1999 and 2008. Even in 2008, they were not united in East Malaysia. Multiple opposition candidates means split votes for the opposition and BN invariably winning.

The other reason is that the majority of non-Malays have supported BN due to a combination of lies, threats, deception, false promises and fear of racial strife if BN loses (a lie carefully nurtured by BN). Many also believe the lie that only BN can provide peace and stability.

In 1999 the Malays swung away from the 50:50 formula against BN over the Anwar issue and the opposition united under Barisan Alternatif. So here was a golden chance to get rid of the BN govt. But the non-Malays swing towards to counter the Malay swing and BN romped home to a 2/3 majority. To a large extent, PAS was responsible for breaking confidence in the coalition with their aggressive Islamic stance.

In 2008, Anwar united the opposition and the non-Malays in the Peninsula had finally woken up leading to a tsunami. Had the natives in East Malaysia joined in, BN would have been routed. The opposition was also to be blamed as lack of unity in East Msia cost PR at least 5 seats.

If the opposition remains united the next G.E. will be very hard for BN to win for the following reasons:

1) The Malays will remain split at 50:50
2) Non-Malays having seen the hope of a fairer govt. will vote overwhelmingly for PR with a greater swing than 2008.
3) The threat of May 13 has been shown to be a lie.
4) The fear that the opposition cannot govern is dispelled in the examples of the PR state governments.
5) East Malaysians sensing the possibility of a change in govt. will vote out the govt. which has marginalized them for decades.

All that is needed is for the PR alliance to hold and no lies, threats, promises, gerry mandering, postal votes and media control can save BN in the next G.E.

Actually the Malays are split 3 ways.
1) Umnoputras - those who have benefited from the largess of the leadership
2) The wannabes in UNMO still waiting for the fruit to drop
3) Those who despise UMNO all together
If a leader can unite the 2nd and 3rd group together, he gets first prize. Anwar is the only one who can. Razaleigh can move Grp 2 and if he works with Anwar, then they both can do it.
I think the Chinese will go with the 3rd group even stronger and join the Indians in the 80% range.

First Group may be important in UMNO but are no more relevant in national politics.

This came in the mail box, thought of sharing with all Malaysians (start thinking as one!).

Subject: story of the ant

Older Version

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The Grasshopper thinks the Ant is a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.

Come winter, the Ant is warm and well fed. The Grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

Modern Version

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The Grasshopper thinks the Ant's a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering Grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the Ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed
while others are cold and starving.

TV1, TV2 & TV3 show up to provide pictures of the shivering Grasshopper next to a video of the Ant in his comfortable home with a
table filled with food.

The majority of the Malaysian Parliament is stunned by the sharp contrast.
How can it be that this poor Grasshopper allowed to suffer so?

Khairy stages a demonstration in front of the Ant's house.

Nazri goes on a fast along with other Grasshoppers demanding that Grasshoppers be relocated to warmer climates during winter.

Most of the related people criticize the Malaysia Government for not upholding the fundamental rights of the Grasshopper.

The local newspapers & the Internet are flooded with online petitions seeking support to the Grasshopper (many promising Heaven and
Everlasting Peace for prompt support as against the wrath of God for non-compliance).

Deputy minister immediately passes a law preventing Ants from working hard in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty among Ants
and Grasshoppers.

Hishammudin makes 'More Special Reservation' for Grasshoppers in Educational Institutions & in Government Services.

The Ant, fined for failing to comply with 30% sharing and having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes; its home is confiscated by
the Government and handed over to the Grasshopper in a ceremony covered by maju ---------.

Prime Minister announces to the whole Malaysia that this is part of the NEP and all have to respect, no questions asked and have to follow
it.

Many years later

The Ant has since migrated to the US and set up a multi-billion dollar company

100s of Grasshoppers still die of starvation despite reservation somewhere in Malaysia.

In spite of the loss of many hard working Ants and feeding the Grasshoppers, Malaysia is still a developing country!!!

All because the ANTS are still doing their work.............................

so.... are you the brilliant ant or the grasshopper that is forever hopping for aid???

Food for thought!

Malay Unity Smokescreen Apa? What it boils to is; the hardcore analogy of UMNO ETHICS and ASPIRATIONS today!

If UMNO “Kelabu Asap” etiquette and practice is allowed to dictate Bangsa Melayu Malaysia, the Malay race in Malaysia will forever be passive, docile and backward in every sense of the word. Exception though! those in the elite UMNO and crony categories will be the TUAN MELAYU! False pretext of Malay unity doesn’t work, quoting history 1946 doesn’t works either – simply yesterday is not what exactly is today. Yesterday is the past and history and lessons noted and learned, and today we expect better a day, we are much a wiser person.

What is dearest to these UMNO morons is nothing more and nothing less to rope the Malays by their noses. The Hardcore Fear Factor Question for UMNO – What is the Reality of Bangsa Melayu di Malaysia?

I say, the topic for this forum should be “Smokescreen of UMNO unity”. As mentioned 51% voted for the sake of UMNO support, 49% in the spirit of Opposition. It's those in the 51% category – required to face the facts and reality of UMNO fiascos! Why still standing in the “Kelabu Asap” circle. Sooner or letter they will realise the facts that bangsa Melayu in Malaysia only gets the “masuk angin kelaur asap” – FALSE REALITY of Bangsa Melayu SECURITY under UMNO PRETENDENCE.

UMNO and BN regime are irrelevent. Current focus and context of Malaysia Political Agenda of Bangsa Malaysia, is to Revampt the BN regime with BR government, elected by the people, should work for the people. Other than these only Kelabu Asap! Malaysian let us work together for fair play, justice and for common goodness. How much longer do we have to swallow this BN regime crap. Today RM2.70 for petrol, ikan kembong 1kg RM15, rice RM30 10kg, - orang susah makan apa? BN regime ambil kira apa? Politik, politik dan penuh muslihat politik, tindas, lawan dan main lagax rakyat, bukan membela rakyat. Reading all above comment, it comes to me now that the Malay is in dilemma. It sadden me to think so.

Malay Dilemma Version 2008
--------------------------

1 - Those who support UMNO depend on UMNO to protect their rights.
2 - The irony is, those who don't support UMNO also depend on it to protect their rights.
3 - Post general election. Umno is suddenly weak. Who will protect the Malay rights? PKR even went to the extent of promising to abolish NEP? So that is not a good start.
4 - In one hand they hate UMNO due to corruption and price increase.
5 - In the other hand other party have no clear policy on how to protect the Malays right.

... what to do ... what to do ...

Food for thought, why PKR have no clear policy on how to protect the Malays. Is it because you guys fear loosing support from other races?

See that's why I am very skeptical when some of above post refer to PKR as Malay party. Because it isn't. Where is the damn policy to protect the Malays right?

We, as the Malays need to stand united and uncompromising. Give betis and be prepared to give peha. Give peha ... well ... be prepared to get raped.

So the question is ... united under which banner? Yet another dilemma!

I must point out some wrong facts. It is Malaysian unity that fought for independence not Malay unity. Without the non Malays agreement the British will not grant independence. The other is that the granting of citizenships to "immigrants" is only for the first generation. Subsequent generation of non Malays born in Malaysia are Malaysians by birth rights. Take Mahatir. His father is an Indian immigrant but he is a Malaysian by birht right and the even opt to become a Malay due to being a Muslim. So please, UMNO, stop saying that we, the non Malays who are born in Malaysia, are Malaysians because of your generosity. We are thorough bred Malaysians as much as any one of you.
