Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) akan mengadakan pertemuan dengan Timbalan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak untuk berbincang mengenai isu kenaikan kuota biasiswa Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) kepada bukan Bumiputera daripada 10 peratus kepada 45 peratus.

Presidennya Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican berkata beliau akan mengadakan pertemuan secepat mungkin dengan Najib yang juga merupakan Ketua Penasihat GPMS.

Majlis Tertinggi GPMS termasuklah kesemua pengerusi GPMS negeri sebulat suara membantah kenaikan itu dan saya mahu tekankan di sini bantahan itu bukanlah bersifat perkauman tetapi berdasarkan tuntutan kesamarataan," katanya kepada pemberita selepas mempengerusikan mesyuarat khas Majlis Tertinggi GPMS di ibu pejabat GPMS di sini hari ini.

Beliau berkata kesamarataan yang dimaksudkannya ialah peluang dalam mendapatkan pendidikan berkualiti kepada pelajar di luar bandar dan di bandar.

"Kita bercakap sekarang mengenai pelajar di luar bandar yang kebanyakannya terdiri daripada Bumiputera. Jurang dalam mendapatkan pendidikan yang berkualiti bagi penduduk di luar bandar masih kurang berbanding pelajar di bandar," katanya.

Reezal Merican berkata kesamarataan daripada segi latar belakang seseorang pelajar itu juga perlu diambil kira dan tidak hanya berdasarkan merit keputusan peperiksaan seseorang pelajar.

"Kami mahukan sosio ekonomi pelajar itu juga diambil kira kerana jurang antara bandar dan luar bandar tentunya berbeza," katanya.

Beliau berkata kenaikan peratusan biasiswa kepada bukan Bumiputera itu juga tidak melambangkan bilangan komposisi kaum di negara ini iaitu 65 peratus Bumiputera dan 35 peratus bukan Bumiputera.

Rabu lepas, Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz berkata biasiswa JPA untuk program ijazah di luar negara kepada bukan Bumiputera dinaikkan kepada 45 peratus mulai tahun ini berbanding 10 peratus tahun lepas.

Katanya secara keseluruhan, sebanyak 2,000 biasiswa disediakan oleh JPA iaitu 1,100 untuk Bumiputera dan 900 untuk bukan Bumiputera. - Bernama

Tolonglah hentikan perbuatan memalukan bangsa ni. The fact is, the quota set for scholarships to even the Bumiputras had been badly abused by UMNO. `Pulling strings' is an everyday word which saw a lot of unqualified Bumis getting scholarships.

Why are you so caught up with this 55:45 quota? If you want more DESERVING Bumis to get the scholarships, start by asking them to WORK LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW and not wait for UMNO to spoil them.

GPMS hanya memantang atas tuntutan "kesamarataan" bila JPA mengumumkan kenaikan kuota untuk orang "bukan bumiputera" (baca "bukan melayu"), tindakan ini sudah menunjukkan GPMS tu berbau perkauman. Kenapa GPMS tidak menunjukkan pantangan mereka apabila JPA hanya menyediakan 10% untuk orang kaum bukan "bumiputera" (melayu)?

Let me predict what will happen after the very brief meeting. GPMS will keep very quiet. Why? GPMS will be told that actually the ratio all the while is 0.5% to 99.5% Bumiputera, the announcement of 45% to 55% is just to keep the non bumis quiet. The real ratio remains at 0.5 to 99.5.

ask for more funds for JPA scholarship and set a benchmark for performers to be entitled for the funds. why having need to set aside 2,000 scholarships?

don't we have more money than that to help the bright students? how about setting more local uni and charge min for uni fees?

These scholarships are not UMNO's scholarships but the scholaship's given by a government agency. We as taxpayers pay taxes to this government which is in partially used to finance these scholarships. Reallylah you are a Mamak Tongkang. Racism is your way of life I guess. there must never be a quota! All deserving and poor students who excel in studies deserve it. It all boils down to one thing. There are many racists amongst us and these current issues has brought out the racists to show their ugly colour through the things they say.

The world is different now. The malays might be better off with some competition where merit is the ultimate deciding factor. Why can't we all be just Malaysians? Is it so hard?!!.

Cannot understand why we still think along racial lines!!!! We are all Malaysians-lah. Scholarships in my 2 cts worth of opinion should be given to " ALL DESERVING AND HOPEFULLY THE NEEDY MALAYSIANS REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOUR OF SKIN AND RELIGION! " NO ONE SHOULD BE DEPRIVED OF A TERTIARY EDUCATION BECAUSE HE IS POOR AND BECAUSE HE/SHE IS OF A DIFFERENT RACE AND RELIGION.

For your information I am sick to hear of scholarships being given to someone whose parents are loaded and connected , whereas a poor fellow can see this injustice and not able to do anything because the system has its weakness.

However to be fair to the JPA at least they are trying to be different and we the rakyat is waiting to see if the proposal will turn out to be a reality or remain a proposal only. Only time can tell.
