Abdullah’s reform agenda yet to get full Umno support PDF Print

When Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was heckled by a clutch of Umno MPs and labelled Opposition lover on Thursday, it spoke volumes about the ruling party’s desire for judicial reform and change.

It also showed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s reform agenda may not enjoy the full support of his party officials, many of whom still view everything in Malaysia as a zero-sum game. Any policy that is embraced by non-Malays must be to detrimental to the political power of the Malays, these politicians conclude.

Thursday was the first time that the de facto Law Minister had to deal with snide remarks from his party members in Parliament but certainly not the first time Umno politicians have sprayed him with adverse comments over the Judicial Appointments Commission, the Royal Commission report on the V.K. Lingam video clip and the review of the Internal Security Act.

These ruling party politicians — including ministers, deputy ministers and MPs — crave for the status quo. They have recovered from the shock to the system which the Malaysian electorate delivered in Election 2008 and have their eyes firmly on what Umno members and the Malay community want.

They are convinced that the reform agenda of Abdullah will weaken the patronage system on which they have been bred and will loosen the grip Malays have on important bodies such as the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Agency. But because he is the prime minister and commands the powers of incumbency, they are wary to attack him or his reforms directly.

So the arrows are fired at the senior lawyer who he appointed as a senator and Cabinet minister.

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir led the Zaid-bashing on Thursday as the minister was telling the House on the government’s efforts to reform the judiciary. “Congratulations, minister. As you have done well in realising the opposition’s goal than that of your own party,” said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s youngest son.

Several other Umno MPs also tossed a few comments at Zaid, including Datuk Tajudin Rahman, the MP for Pasir Salak.

The next day Zaid hit back, saying that the BN leadership should take action against MPs who were disrespectful to Abdullah and were against government policies. In response, Mukhriz accused Zaid of being more loyal to the PM than to the party.

The position taken by Mukhriz is not surprising. He wants Abdullah to resign and makes no bones about it. He has asked more questions aimed at embarrassing the PM in Parliament than the Opposition.

He also believes that this emphasis on judicial reform is aimed at diminishing his father’s legacy. The Royal Commission report said that Dr Mahathir did not follow the constitutional process in appointing and promoting judges. It also laid blame on Lingam, businessman Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Tengku Adnan Mansor for judge-fixing.

Since the report was made public, there have been calls for the major players in the video clip episode including Dr Mahathir to be investigated by the Attorney-General. In the upper reaches of Umno, some politicians cannot understand the fuss being made about Dr Mahathir’s role in the video clip.

As far as they are concerned, he was exercising his constitutional right to appoint Tun Ahmad Fairuz Abdul Halim as the Chief Justice. And if he took the advice of Lingam, Tan and Tengku Adnan, it was well within his right to do so.

Some senior Umno politicians are also wary of the Judicial Appointments Commission, seeing it as a body which will pave the way for the dilution of Malay power over this important institution.

Under the government’s plan, the commission will provide a list of candidates to the PM. He will whittle down the list and hand over his nomination for the position of Chief Justice or other senior positions on the Bench to the Conference of Malay Rulers. If the PM rejects any candidates forwarded by the commission, he has to given reasons.

Some Umno politicians have a different take on the commission. They note that there if the majority of commission members are non-Malays, there is a possibility that they will nominate more non-Malays to the Bench. One day soon, the CJ will be an Indian or a Chinese, they fear.

Surprisingly, such views are being passed on not only by peripheral party members but also ministers and former ministers, leading the more enlightened members of Barisan Nasional to wonder whether the lessons of Election 2008 have been fully understood by Umno.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has told friends that though Abdullah appears committed to reform the judiciary, his party does not have the stomach for any change and will block any meaningful move for judicial reform. His reading of the situation will be put to the test twice over the next few weeks.

First, when the Cabinet discusses the framework for the Judicial Appointments Commission and when the Bill is presented before Parliament at the next sitting beginning June 15.

If some of the ministers object to the commission or if some of the 79 Umno MPs disregard the BN Whip and vote against the Bill, this will be the clearest sign yet that Abdullah’s reform agenda is on shaky ground. - The Malaysian Insider

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir led the Zaid-bashing on.....

But he and his father gave in the final blow calling for Abdullah Badawi's resignation.

Now, who are the devils in UMNO? M&M.......Mahathir and Mukhriz!

This just goes to show the intellectual bankruptcy of these UMNO people. They have absolutely NO idea of the concept of separation of powers, the rule of law, the importance of judicial independence and meritocracy. If they continue to hog this narrow line of thinking, I fear that there is not much hope for this country of ours. Why must everything be based on race for these idiots? Are they not capable of seeing where the country is today in terms of education, the image of the judiciary, the rising crime rate, corruption, etc, etc, etc?? These are just selfish individuals who will go to any length to protect their own interests just like one ex PM we all know. Absolute rubbish.

UMNO is rotten tothe core and if expose wil contaminate the whole nation and most probably extend tyo Thailand and Singapore as well. They are against reform. They want t continue to screw the people and that is their very reason of joining UMNO.

That would be the only reason for UMNO to want a snap election, in the hope that Martch 8 was a fluke and UMNO can call a brake to reform.

I hope that BN call for a snap election so that malaysians can throw out the BN and Pakatan can rule the nation with CAT.

Malaysians are ready for greater change and Malaysians will know your ill intention should you call for a snap poll.

With so many crooks in UMNO, tak boleh reform lah, they might end up in lock-up if real reform was carried out. Whatever so called reform announced by UMNO at most would be half-hearted to pacify the rakyat, NOT until we see real and concrete change can we believe what BN government announced thus far is for real.

Let us see how they are going to deal with Mukriz - the Gen2 mamak s/o of HP6 mamak.

I agree with justice4all there is every reason to believe that the BN rule and UMNO's era will soon be over. UMNO is now focusing on narrow sectarian interests at the expense of national interests. Attention has turned inwards and the vision for building a brilliant future for all Malaysians has vanished. Know ye not that when our nation fails, everyone suffers: UMNO or No UMNO; Malays or Non-Malays. I sense the end of an era. The signs are too obvious.

This is one of the fundamental problems affecting this country. We have too many feudalistic leaders who only think along racial lines and to hell with the country for all they care. Genuine leaders who do not think likewise are heckled until they do. Of course we all know what these selfish leaders are up to. They are more interested in what they can get than genuine concern about their race.
I believe this party UMNO is seriously outdated and if allowed to rule further will cause the demise of this great nation.

Even back in the 70s there was this unwritten code among umno; any policy that favours malays must be promoted, any policy that might promote non malays will not be accepted, and any policy that serves as an impediment to non malays and non islamic religions will be promoted. In short, the rule was, 'does this policy favour the malays/islam over and above the policies currently in place? If yes, lets do it?

By this logic the Judicial Appointments Commission will not be passed, except with the proviso that the commission only advises the PM who will not be bound by it.

Its quite obvious that in order for change to occur, the sincere party members who really care for the future of our nation, should work with AAB and form a new party, say, United Malaysians Party.

The rot in UMNO is so bad that in fact the party has lost its way, lost its raison d'etere. Otherwise how could it be that they are against a full overhaul of the judiciary system? The party members must not forget that the last resort for equitable address of their own grievances will be the judiciary. So they are affected too.

If UMNO continues along this course and if Pakatan Rakyat cannot get the so-called crossover numbers to change the government, then the nation is doomed to go into hibernation (best case scenario) for the next 10 years at the minimum.

There was never a rule of law nor Seperation of powers, the rulers were shackled, parliament was controlled by a 2/3rd strong party during the mahathir's years, so it is difficult for them without those things. So naturally they are fighting it. The problem is those are universal ideals. And that is what the rakyaat is yearning for. They will fight fretorts.or it. AAb should not relent. Zaid should continue. Hope they are not discouraged by these baseless

The original UMNO did not last very long.
UMNO baru is also short-live.
This shows that the Malay can never be united for long, and will forever remain at the bottom of everything.

WILL UMNO SURVIVE?
The fear among many people of UMNO ever breaking-up is being allayed by their trust in Dr Mahathir. There is nothing that he cannot fix. In fact, he, and the party may even come out more triumphant in any crisis. So goes the thought. Will it work this time around? To get an idea, let's look at some aspects of UMNO's less bright side. To begin with the party lacks renewed idealism. Its membership is elicited among social climbers with corporate ambitions, rather than among those with a commitment to a cause. As some would see it, in UMNO, the only cause worth dying for (or lying for) is money.
