SHAH ALAM: Financial “carrots” dangled by Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen during election campaigning will be among the issues to be raised at the State Assembly session beginning Wednesday.
Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim explained that the state government could not immediately fulfil some of the pledges made as the budget for this year had already been finalised. “I dare not spend too much funds on other matters (not listed in the state Budget) because we have to look at the expenses and costs to the state before we can allocate funds for the aid we promised,” he told reporters after being sworn in as a member of the state Royal Council at Istana Kayangan here yesterday before Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Khalid was commenting on a second police report lodged by Mohd Shaid Rosli, 25, on Monday over the failure of the state government to fulfil its election promises. The unemployed man had lodged a similar report on May 7 after the state government announced that it could not offer the 20% discount on assessment for domestic properties. His latest report comes after the state government announced that the RM1,000 aid for Selangor-born university students would only be given to those coming from families who earned RM1,500 or less. Asked whether the people could expect “shocking” revelations about the previous Barisan Nasional state government during the sitting, Khalid said there would be something for them to “enjoy, just wait and see”. The proceedings of the State Assembly sitting would be posted live on the official state government website www.selangor.gov.my. Selangor Welfare, Women’s Affairs, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Rodziah Ismail said this would be the first time that people could observe the full assembly proceedings via video streaming. “The main aim of the Internet broadcast is to let Selangor residents follow developments in the state, and for them to know what their government is doing. “They will also have a chance to share views and forward ideas on matters discussed at the assembly through the website,” she added. Pakatan Rakyat holds 36 of the 56 seats in the State Assembly. By DHARMENDER SINGH - The Star
