The Penang Government hopes toll collection at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza in Seberang Jaya will be scrapped before the next general election.
By ZULKIFLY MOHAMAD Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the Pakatan Rakyat Penang Government had been lobbying for the toll collection to be stopped, including sending appeal letters to the federal authorities. “We even highlighted the matter during the current Parliament session. We will not stop our efforts and pressure until toll collection in Sungai Nyoir is eventually scrapped. “However, the people should understand that the matter is not under the state’s juris-diction and control,” he told reporters after offering prayers at the Butterworth Buddhist Association in conjunction with Wesak Day celebrations yesterday. Toll collection at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza was effected on Feb 20 despite protests from motorists, nearby residents, NGOs, DAP and Umno. The tollbooth is one of the three set up along the RM700mil Butterworth Outer Ring Road. Users have to pay between 50sen and RM3.90sen, depending on the vehicle class. Lim said he had also met Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in Parlia-ment to discuss many issues affecting the state, including the Sungai Nyior toll issue. On the mysterious state Umno leader who was offered a post in the state government, Lim refused to reveal his identity. He said the leader had resigned from the post after assuming it for several days follow-ing pressure from Umno.
