Analysts say move could hit country's risk profile, enhance opposition's position

By Leslie Lopez, THE STRAITS TIMES

MALAYSIA'S already messy politics just got messier.

The stunning resignation yesterday of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad from Umno is set to undermine the party and the shaky Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition government.

The implications for Malaysia, which is still grappling with the unexpected outcome of the March general election, are far-reaching.

Tun Dr Mahathir's influence and political clout cannot be underestimated, and his resignation could raise Malaysia's political risk profile among foreign investors as well as undermine an already struggling economy.

It could also strengthen the country's opposition alliance, headed by his political nemesis Anwar Ibrahim.

The resignation could tempt Umno's parliamentary representatives and BN's coalition partners to defect to the opposition alliance as a result of the worsening crisis.

Umno information chief Muhammad Muhamad Taib said: 'It is not fair for him to do that (ask members to quit) because it will affect Umno adversely.'

Tun Dr Mahathir had earlier urged his supporters, including Cabinet ministers, to resign and only return to Umno after Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi steps down.

But some analysts see Tun Dr Mahathir's move as a sign of desperation. The former leader has been seeing the unravelling of his mixed legacy.

The most recent event in this process came last week when the government released the findings of a Royal Commission which had investigated allegations of corruption in the judiciary.

The report concluded that Tun Dr Mahathir had played a role in undermining the selection of the country's judges.

The report also called on the government to open fresh investigations into allegations of corruption among judges.

It stands as one of the most serious indictments of Tun Dr Mahathir's legacy.

Seen that way, his resignation could serve to deflect attention from the report and discourage any debate over his political record.

Without doubt, his decision to resign will affect the morale of party members.

It will also put Datuk Seri Abdullah in an awkward position as he will be blamed for driving their former chief out of the party.

But Tun Dr Mahathir's call for mass resignations from Umno may fail.

Analysts note that his attempts to stoke a rebellion after the BN lost badly in the March 8 election failed.

'The thorn in the flesh has been removed,' said former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam, a political enemy of Tun Dr Mahathir who added that Umno 'must accept the reality that the Mahathirism concept has gone'.

But should Tun Dr Mahathir's gambit work, the implications could be disastrous for Umno, with its 79 elected representatives in Parliament. It is the single-largest political group in the 222-member Parliament.

Under the Constitution, the King picks as prime minister the leader who enjoys majority support of the Lower House.

But the opposition's strong showing in the general election has changed the political dynamic. A sharp drop in Umno's representation in Parliament would strip the party of its premier status.

Under such a scenario, the King could call for fresh elections to resolve the country's political crisis. Or he could exercise his constitutional right to pick a leader who, in his mind, enjoys majority support in Parliament.

Under that scenario, Datuk Seri Anwar's claim that the opposition could form the government before mid-September does not ring so hollow any more.

i think we should celebrate the rights of racists to be a racist.

And we should celebrate our right to choose if we want our (and our children) lives to be governed by racists with tiered rights, privileges.

I don't know if it's the lack of moral fibre or is it in the genes. They always kiss up to the power that be. Perhaps they are being pragmatic. The power that be can dish out goodies - from big contracts to nasi sebungkus.

Anyway its 2 kali 5. During your time you also do the same to your predecessors. Now its pay back time I guess.

Yup, it does seem to be taking the spotlight away from the judiciary report.

On the other hand, it is also distracting attention away from the ludicrous seditious charges against Karpal. Hopefully, UMNO will have better things to worry about over the next few weeks than to file nonsensical police reports.

Is TDM using this antic to gain attention to himself ?. Is he suffering from "attention" deficit disorder ?. My this I mean he is missing all the attention he used to get when he was PM.

At the rate UMNO is going, it will implode very soon. However, I expect the mainstream media to go all out to run down Tun M. Watch out for write ups on Tun M by obscure writers and 'researchers'.
The person in a spot now is the AG. It would be nice to prosecute Tun M for the VK Lingam case, and shut him up for good, but with him will go the others, especially Tg Adnan. Will he pick and choose and only go for VK and Tun M and leave the others alone? After all, Najib has already said that prosecution is not automatic.

Lingamgate should bring all implicated down-to start with TDM, TATM, VT, VKL and not forgetting the Tuns Eusoof and Fairuz while a fair share of the blame should also go to the AG, the IGP and the ACA who had closed the earlier investigations. BTW anyone knows who could investigate the AG?

>Analysts note that his attempts to stoke a rebellion after the BN lost badly in the March 8 election failed.]]

What's this Lopez guy talking about? BN lost five states but still won the overall elections. If we take Lopez's criterion for victories, then in most years the British Labor or Conservative party would've "lost badly" throughout most of their existence. Perhaps Lopez is unable to emerge from the conditions of his country, where one party overwhelmingly predominates until, if it gets its way, Kingdom Come.

My 2 cents worth of thought :-

1) Dr M is deflecting the Lingam Gate outcome, if there are concrete proof he screwed up his 22 years in power...he will be in the deepest shit hole that ever known to mankind.

2) Racist-Corruptive-Ultra-Blind-Ethno-Chauvisnist-Nationalism is coming coming to a dooms day. Its irreleavant, evil, sadist and it will slowly but surely eats up the perpatrator.

3) A good beggining for a more democratic governance in malaysia which will suit our multinational country needs.

Finally.....Anwar Ibrahim, get ready ------> we will hand over the crowb to you soon.

Should UMNO members resign??? This question should be directed to Sabah & Sarawak UMNO members, as TDM still croaks about UMNO safeguarding the rights of Malays, then and now. YES, Sabah & Sarawak should resign and NOT join TDM, but PR.

UMNO is a party for all who patronize to have a lifetime of partying... that's all.

When the party stops, all the members will quit.

Now the membership of UMNO is only 2... Pak Lah and Son in Law.

As the title suggests this is a ploy to deflect attention to the uncovering of his dirty tricks as PM. But more importantly, this is a critical milestone for Anwar to become PM (as head of UMNO).
The stars had started to shine on Malaysia, with Badawi becoming PM..and the uncovering of Najib's hand in the Alantuya blast (which has neutered Najib and allowed the country to witness a new dawn on March 8.

He has gone mad and those who follow him must also be mad.

He has been so worried about his legacy being undone but his legacy are gross corruption, social, political and economic manipulation and discrimination, we shall add judicial corruption as well, which every malaysian suspect but without proof then until lately.

Are the malays about the above? No, there are scums among malays especially in UMNO but malays like most malaysian are generally good citizens.

Mahathir is trying to force a new General Election to
prevent the Opposition Alliance coming to power. He
thinks the BN under Najib and his son can make a big
comeback in a fresh General Election.

Mahathir will use money to pull away at least 30 MPs
from BN to cause a collapse of the Badawi Government
before the Opposition Alliance has a chance to take
over the Federal Government.

If Badawi is smart, he will form a coalition
government with PR.

TDM is trying to avoid the investigation on him on Lingam's scandal..he knows that Pak Lah in his natural fashion will allow the investigation to follow...thus exposing him and his evil deeds to the whole world. TDM wants to die as LEGEND...he fears the loss of his SO CALLED LEGENDARY REIGN ...than death..he knows that his Najib can do better than Pak lah to eliminate all evidence, cases, and filth of his past administration. he has purposely forgotten the proverb: takut kerana salah...berani kerana benar. if he is so self righteous and always project that others are so corrupted and himself NOT- then why should he fear...let the due process continue...UMNO DOESNT crash because of Pak Lah...it is GOD'S WILL...and now the time to empower the rakyat to rise ...TDM thought he can play GOD...he just couldnt believe what has happenned this year and he is now doing so many ridiculous things that seem to embarass us Malaysians to the rest of the WORLD...what a joke. IF TDM thinks he is clean in the Lingam Gate matter...then relax...BUT THE FACT HE IS THE ROOT OF THE LINGAM GATE MATTER- now he blames others and even made one opposition leader to say that it is not right to investigate TDM because it is the fault of the JUDGES that kept pressing on TDM ...but the fact is that this isnt so - AS TDM already sworn and said...no one influences him on JUDICIARY matters...he makes his own DECISION....REALLY HOPE THAT TDM BE EXPOSED FOR HIS CRIMES...in fact the whole of UMNO AND ITS COALITION PARTNERS started from Day one and overstayed for so long ...WORLD RECORD- that corrupted them so much that corruption became like an OLYMPIC competition- where politicians compete with themselves to see who got the BIGGEST SLICE OF THE MALAYSIAN / RAKYAT'S WEALTH- smaller | bigger

He knows he is a liability for his son. He is fed up that for all that he has done to everyone during his 22 years they are not supporting him. He is 83 and like a small kid he is sulking. Or he is a genius. If within the party he can't say certain things either in the public court or in court, but since he is out of the party his shackles are off. He can say anything. And mind you when TDM is unshackled he is potent. If you had noted him before being PM (what he said and did) and during his PM days (where the PM chair controlled what he can saya and do) you will understand that by leaving UMNO, TDM is going to creatae havoc. Watch the show.

Mahathir in that photo reminds me of Pak Pandir.

In my Std 1 and 2 (69 & 1970), we had lots of short stories in malay and English of Pak Pandir and his adventures. The accompanying hand drawn sketches reflect closely to Mahathir in the photo.

Mahathir is a Muslim and in Malaysia all Muslims are
considered Malays if they habitually speak the Malay
language and practice Malay culture and customs.

True, that Mahathir wrote Indian Muslim as his race
when entering the University of Singapore to do
medicine. This was revealed by Lee Kuan Yew himself.

But this should not detract from the constitutional
definition of a Malay. Hence, Mahathir is a
constitutional Malay.

Also, it must be remembered that the great majority of
the Malays in Peninsular Malaysia are in fact not
Malays but Bugis, Minang, Javanese, Achenese etc etc
It was the British who called them Malays. In fact,
USM has done a study on this.

Malay nationalism was something invented in Singapore
by the Kakas and the Jawi Peranakan (children of Kaka
fathers and Malay mothers) and not the other groups
from Nusantara who now call themselves Malays. That's
why Malay politics is dominated by kakas, followed by
*****s and Arabs and not the other groups from
Nusantara who call themselves Malays.

Thanks for the information frenz. I found another interesting lecture given by Dr. Farish Noor which also stated that Malay was actually created by the British. The topic of the lecture call The Lost Tribe of Malaysia. You can find the lecture from youtube. progressive thinker asas falsafah kebangsaan Melayu Malaysia jawi book

Also, Dr. Farish Noor stated that there was a book, Asas Falsafah Kebangsaan Melayu, written during 1946 that define Malay as anyone who was born and live in South East Asia and considered South East Asia as home.
