The stability of this majority Muslim nation through political and economic change has significant implications for the United States; Malaysia is America's 10th-largest trading partner.

By Stuart E. Eizenstat, WASHINGTON TIMES

There is a titanic conflict within the Muslim world pitting modernity against reactionary radicalism.

Those who promote modernization and integration with the world economy will only succeed if their policies will lead to a better way of life for their people. The next president of the United States must determine how best to support the reformers, which will require new approaches, a combination of both hard and soft U.S. power, and most importantly, strong, reliable allies.

That's why it is so important for the United States to pay attention to the transformation now occurring in the key Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia, a Muslim nation of some 27 million people whose prime minister, Abdullah Badawi, has responded to electoral calls for change by introducing sweeping reforms designed to maintain a democratic open society for the long term.

Malaysian voters sent a strong message to the government in March 8 elections by giving opposition parties solid gains in Parliament, even as Mr. Badawi's party continued to hold more than 60 percent of the seats. Instead of heeding the calls of his adversaries to resign, Prime Minister Badawi embraced the call of voters who demanded reform. The results: Mr. Badawi's avalanche of proposals has begun positioning him as the 68-year-old comeback kid of Malaysia politics.

The reforms have addressed three central foundations for freedom too often not seen in developing nations, especially those in the Islamic world:

(1) Mr. Badawi has moved to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, via a process to create merit-based lists of judicial candidates, similar to the vetting systems used in the United States to rate potential new federal judges.

(2) Mr. Badawi is building on strategies adopted in the nearby city states of Hong Kong and Singapore to create independent bodies to combat corruption.

(3) Finally, he is opening up historically strict licensing processes to promote freedom of the press, making it possible for the newly empowered political opposition to publish its own newspaper.

These new reforms would fundamentally change the way business — and politics — are carried out in a nation whose political leadership had historically emphasized economic development rather than political freedom. By making the country's institutions more transparent and independent, the Badawi government is promoting a system also more likely to be resilient in turbulent economic times.

The stability of this majority Muslim nation through political and economic change has significant implications for the United States; Malaysia is America's 10th-largest trading partner.

Malaysia is an important producer for the United States of components for high-tech business and consumer goods, like computers and cell phones. It has also provided a steady example of a Muslim government serious about combating terrorism at home, and proved himself a leader of Islamic moderates in a concerted effort to challenge the life support systems that sustain the dark forces of al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah and the terror network that stretches from the Magrheb across the Middle East into South East Asia. But Mr. Badawi is also now demonstrating the power of democracy in the fight against Islamic extremism.

Other Muslim leaders, including those of some of the opposition parties in Malaysia, have a different vision, one that would reverse Mr. Badawi's goal of converting Malaysia into a multicultural, Islamic-oriented state that is helping to modernize Islam in ways compatible with the globalizing challenges of the 21st century.

For example, Malaysia's Parti Islam se Malaysia (PAS) has called for imposing a criminal code of Islamic law (Shariah), including the Islamic punishment such as amputations, stonings, etc., reversal of women's rights and their resegregation, and an end to race-oriented affirmative action programs.

Malaysia and Mr. Badawi have sought to lead by example in the region. For example, during his recently concluded chairmanship of the Organization for Islamic Conference (OIC), an international organization of 57 Muslim states from the Middle East to Indonesia, Mr. Badawi led efforts to address the twin challenges of Muslim world poverty and illiteracy that fuel the spread of Islamic extremism.

He has challenged his fellow Muslim states, including members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting States (OPEC), to commit themselves to a joint plan to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and unemployment in the Islamic world.

His persistence in helping to establish a new economic agenda for the Muslim world represents a critical initiative in the long term struggle to transform impoverished Muslim states into nations that find their place in a progressive, globalizing world.

In the end, whether Mr. Badawi's dexterity will keep him in power to serve a full term is yet to be determined, but what he has set in motion deserves the support of the United States. His reforms will place Malaysia firmly on the path to modernizing its Islamic society.

Mr Eizenstst is ahead of us in Malaysia. He knows that the details of the judicial sppointment process even before the Minister has announced it! Home Ministry has given a licence to Keadilan. It has given one to PAS as well. Nothing new. We are told the anti-corruption reform would be modelled under the HK ICAC. No details yet. No bill in Parlaiment. Seems AAB has a cheer leader in Washington too!

Another toothless commission to advise the PM. We have too many toothless commission. No thanks.

(2) Mr. Badawi is building on strategies adopted in the nearby city states of Hong Kong and Singapore to create independent bodies to combat corruption.

So what if it is independent. Nazri just said in Parliament that the new body will not have prosecution power. It is like catching a thief and let him go.

(3) Finally, he is opening up historically strict licensing processes to promote freedom of the press, making it possible for the newly empowered political opposition to publish its own newspaper.

The license is still in force and the government can revoke it anytime.

Another good friend of SIL?

From Wikipedia:
The Washington Times is a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. It was founded in 1982 by Unification Church founder Sun Myung Moon, Bo Hi Pak, one of his main assistants, and other church members.[2] As of March 31, 2007, the Times had an average daily circulation of 102,351,[3] about one-seventh that of its chief competitor, The Washington Post. The Times has several well-known writers, and has published stories which have attracted national attention.

...

By 2002, the Unification Church had spent about $1.7 billion in subsidies for the Times. The paper has lost money every year that it has been in business.

Typical American idiocy at work. America is filled with ignorants bigot like this one Stuart E. Eizenstat. The comment about PAS was old news. Pas dont harp on those issues anymore man. He doesnt even know about Islam to begin with. Just because Badawi talked about eradicating poverty did not make him a champion of Islamic causes. It is not about Islam, it is about good governance. It just happened none of the so called 'Islamic World' doesnt have competent leaders to eradicate poverty and illiteracy(more like they choose to have incompetent leaders). That goes without saying...

Ask Badawi about his version of Islam and he will tell commission RM500m is okay but RM50 corruption is not. Killing people in the interest of the country is alright because he is the country. Whoever is against him is against the country and that amounts to treason ISA!!! His son is filthy rich, his son in law is just as rich and even more powerful, his wife walks around as if she owned the country. So much for being Islamic. And UMNO had/or still have rapist, murderes, corrupt individuals(so obvious) and believe me almost everyone in UMNO abuses his/her power. Also, if you could find an UMNO leader who is average in wealth, then pigs can fly. Again, Islamic culture meh?

As ffoc has pointed out, the Washington Times is owned by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. For the information of those who may not know, the Unification Church are the Moonies, a group well-known throughout the world for their extreme right-wing views and weird religious beliefs, which have been widely condemned by most Christian churches.
Probably not the best source of objective reporting.

What's happening in Malaysia has nothing to do with a Muslim world's conflict between modernity and radicalism.

For one, Malaysia is NOT a Muslim country, but a country that in fact is plural with respect to religions, races, historical experiences and cultures. The US has a much better claim in saying that it is a "Christian country" with over 80% of its citizen being Christian, but has it ever boasted being a Christian country?? Malaysia has merely around 50% Muslims.

Secondly, people in Malaysia has never espoused (Muslim) radicalism that other so-called Muslim countries have such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

What's really happening in Malaysia is an empowerment of our people to have more say in how our government works for all our citizens,i.e. true democracy. Nothing more and nothing less. smilies/cool.gif

The author is misled by the propanda from KL. If she were staying in Malaysia for some time, she would know immediately that Abdullah is not walking the talk. Things on the ground look, feel and move exactly the same way as before. The UMNO government is using the Arab and the Camel method to dislodge the non Malays and marginalise them. The Americans will sacrifice the nonMalays to get the support from the Malays. This will destabilise the country. The Americans will do anything to control the Straits of Malacca.

People, check out the guy's wikipedia article. He's not only an ex-US civil servant, but the legal firm he works with, Covington and Burling, has major clients like Halliburtan and PhilipMorris, deals with trade issues as well as US FTAs, and represented a few governments and had work with SingTel too. He also works for a PR firm called APCO Worldwide, who's major client included big Tobacco and pro-tobacco industry work, and one of the firm's client is a student group in Oxford (SIL link?).

My take is that this guy is writing a PR piece, but whether it is for money (looking at his profile, he should be wealthy enough) or he may be genuine in his rather (superficial)views and driven by US trade interests. His background in dealing with trade affairs might support the latter assumption.

Nevertheless, even if the guy is paid or convinced by a Park Lahh goon, he may be directing his comments to the US business sector rather than telling anything to the pro-democracy and human rights US audience, essentially saying, "hey dont wory guys, all that krap about the sleeping PeeAm, nah, aint happening, the fact is he's an ok modern Mooslem and business friendly too, though there them some Talibans in the country but he has them under control, yeah."

Stuart,

Are you high on something?

There is no way PAS can implement Islamic state here in Malaysia, since they just contested 1/3 of the seat available.

BTW, your high remark on the the supposedly "68 years old Come back kid" is way off remark. He only good at make some promised just like the 2004 election. Please research better in future unless you want your tabloid to be place at the same rack as the Mangga Comic smilies/smiley.gif

Don't take this too seriously. I think labisman wanted to show you what idiots these "world policemen" are. Many Americans don't even know where their soldiers are fighting in West Asia. When they want to find out something, they "airdrop" in a journalist, the same as they airdropped economists who destroyed so many countries which had been destroyed by their "aid". The journalist then does a "melawat sambil belajar".

Ahem...not even the Post, since the US Senate’s Church committee had a hearing on CIA involvement in the mass media, facts have surfaced revealing that, among other things, the CIA owned/subsidized more than 50 newspapers, news services, radio stations, and magazines (the Washington Post among them). Another dozen or more were infiltrated by its agents, and the Agency also published or subsidized more than 1,000 books that subvert certain countries by spreading disinformation or rewriting their histories.

The elder Bush was once a CIA director, and though he tried to give the minimum information requested by the Church committee, the latter did obtain a list of more than 400 journalists working for the mass media, among which was Reuters and other giant "news" organizations such as UPI and the Associated Press.

Finally, CIA's reach also included European organizations such as the German Springer and other major newspapers and dailies.
