Freedom of Information PDF Print
Friday, 09 May 2008 22:22

Folks,

You may already be aware that the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and the Civil Society Initiative for Parliamentary Reform (CSI-Parliament) have prepared 4 documents supporting the Private Member’s Bill on Freedom of Information in Parliament.

These documents are available for you to read here...

There is also a petition calling for a Malaysian Freedom of Information Act that has so far attracted only 480 signatures. According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Report for Q3 2007, Malaysia now has 1,229,000 broadband subscriptions and 3,910,000 dial-up subscriptions representing 4.5% and 14.6% penetration rates respectively. This translates into approximately 5,139,000 Internet subscribers! The response rate for the petition is sad. Go here to find out more...

Then get the word out and persuade everyone you know who has Internet access to sign the petition.

Please send this message out on blogs, websites, thru e-mail and SMA, by word of mouth... whatever. Do your part in raising civil society awareness of the need for Information Freedom.

i think very few people sign because they are no aware an online petition exists. I didn't know until now. Why not get the Malaysia Today blog set a permanent link to the petition?

I beg to differ writer but I am confident that the reason why so little support is loaned in this petition effort is because..

NONE of us are CONVINCED that sending a petition to the federal government will ever WORK!

We are dealing with pricks who did not even take heed of the letters from the PM of Mongolia and here we are hoping to send a peaceful message hoping it would work?

I doubt it! I think we need to have several more bloggers sent to jail and prosecuted, riots riots riots riots and international broadcasting before these suckers even listen.

We all must thank PM for the freedom of info on internet so far. untill Raja Petra K jail for sedition, shit, this is the kind of gov we have, they are Umno, BN gov that is evil, why ? they are so corrupt, greedy, arrogant, why ?

this is from the rakyat ! why our gov are so evil ? how can they be so evil and bully our rakyat, treat our rakyat so cruelly ! the story from Mahkota Cheras, they are being force to use the longer route of longer by 7km, everyday, they pay toll for 1.80, waste petrol of extra distance, and traffic jam everyday.
what kind of go ? this is Umno, BN gov, that ill, treat and bully rakyat.

Dear Friends

I am seeking your awareness and support on the Bandar Mahkota Cheras free access road, which was illegally barricaded by the Grand Saga toll concessionaire in October 2005.

This Mahkota Cheras free access road was built by the developer during the construction of the Sg Long and Bandar Mahkota Cheras townships. When Grand Saga toll concessionaire built the Cheras highway, they blocked off this existing access road, with the support of the Barisan Nasional BN government, to force the people into paying a 60 cent toll for the concessionaire to make money. This toll was then increased to 90 cents, increasing the people's burden even further in the midst of economic downturn.

Pakatan Rakyat, the Opposition Coalition comprising DAP, PKR and PAS, in the 12th General Election, promised that if they won the Selangor State Government, the road will be opened for public use. Promptly keeping true to their promises, within one month after their victory, the road was opened for use on 21 April 2008, amid protests by the toll concessionaire and threats of arrests from the police.

Upon further checking, it has been confirmed that the road is under the State (Selangor) government jurisdiction, and the road itself belongs to the developer, therefore Grand Saga has no right to block this road.

On 7 May 2008, another historic day in Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police (Polis DiRaja Malaysia) once again proves their loyalty to the BN Federal Government and the toll concessionaire by launching an offensive against the Rakyat to allow Grand Saga to block the access road once more using one ton concrete blocks, barely two weeks after it was opened by the Selangor State Government. Within one hour after they reblocked the road, the Rakyat stood UNITED and by hand, they managed to remove the concrete blocks.

Yesterday, 8 May 2008, in another BLACK DAY for Malaysians, FRU and police sealed off the area and allowed Grand Saga to destroy the road by digging a 2 feet wide by 1 feet deep trench, thereby preventing any vehicle from accessing it. Between 10.30pm to 11.30pm, MP Segambut Lim Lip Eng (DAP) was assaulted by police and FRU personnel for trying to stop them from firing tear gas and chemical-laced water cannon at the Rakyat.

How many petitions have work in the past?

By the way here is an idea...

why don't instead of having regular citizens signing these petitions. We should have high profile representation to sign them. Here is a list of names I propose:

1. Mahathir
2. Dr. Sharribuu
3. Prime Minister of Mongolia
4. Prime Minister of Australia
5. Prime Minister of Singapore
6. etc etc.

I think having regular citizens, bloggers or even PR party reps is not shouting it loud enough. We need it to be endorsed by international representative. It is very ambitious and even impossible but I think it is the only way a petition could work.

Else, write a formal letter to international news agencies like Bloomberg, BBC, ABC, NBC, Reuters, Associated Press, etc to post news about lack of press freedom in Msia and post a petition link.

Kepada,
YAB Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi,
Perdana Menteri Malaysia.

Y.A.B. Datuk Seri,

Mohd Sofi Yassin.
Rakyat Malaysia.

A greater awareness of a petition such as this is needed...and on a popular site like over here. The signatures had currently exceeded 600 and counting.
The govt can only ignore us for so long..till we grow to mammoth propotions.

Remember there is strength in numbers!
Remember what democracy is!!

Agreed with zul4kulim, petition is one of the options, and it not always successful, what if, do 1 petition online, and one for offline that is handled by sukarelawan. Just to sharpen the result. smilies/sad.gif

Totally agree with mrgoh. Those BNazi bastards will simply ignore any petition, letters, memos, representatives, etc. (If you send them roses, the bastards will even gas you!)

In the past year, I found that a lot of 'information' were made available on MT, Malaysiakini and similar websites. If we keep doing this, the BNazi government might see the wisdom in making actual 'facts' available to the public, just to clear their names(eg. the Wikipedia's potrayal Sarawak's CM's shady dealings was brought up in Parliment yesterday).
