Death of car company founder Nasimuddin leaves sprawling empire worth $860 million steeped in intrigue and without an appointed successor

By Leslie Lopez, THE STRAITS TIMES

THE sudden death of Malaysian car tycoon Nasimuddin Amin yesterday has raised doubts about the future of his sprawling corporate empire.

It has also opened up an opportunity for Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to overhaul the country's controversial car-import policies.

Tan Sri Nasimuddin, 53, died in Los Angeles, where he was undergoing treatment for cancer, which close associates said was detected last December.

'He kept it very private...He went to seek treatment in February and never returned,' a close associate of the businessman, who declined to be named, told The Straits Times.

Tan Sri Nasimuddin helmed the sprawling Naza Group of companies, an unlisted corporation which has interests in the assembly of South Korean Kia cars in Malaysia, the distribution of luxury motor vehicles, and a controlling interest in property concern TTDI.

Financial executives said that with his sudden death, it was unclear who would head his car-assembly empire, which bankers estimate is worth some RM2billion (S$860million).

Also in doubt is a clutch of potentially lucrative distribution franchises for Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini vehicles which Naza controls.

Senior car industry executives and lawyers told The Straits Times that the British authorities had started an investigation into allegations that the Naza Group and Tan Sri Nasimuddin were involved in the export of luxury motor vehicles using forged registration records.

It is not clear whether the investigation will now be abandoned.

Tan Sri Nasimuddin's death also poses challenges for Datuk Seri Abdullah's government.

According to car industry executives, Tan Sri Nasimuddin was the most vocal lobbyist against Datuk Seri Abdullah's push to revamp the country's car-import licensing business, which is worth more than RM1 billion.

The vacuum created by his death offers the Prime Minister an opportunity to make radical changes to Malaysia's car-import business, which has been criticised as being unfairly cushioned from foreign imports by the very restrictive nature of the licensing scheme.

But some officials are sceptical. 'The money involved is so big. There is already a clamour to step into his shoes,' a senior Finance Ministry official said without elaborating.

Tan Sri Nasimuddin's rise to the highest echelons of corporate Malaysia is a rags to riches tale.

According to friends and business associates, he did not do well in school and began his working life as a clerk in a Chinese-owned finance company specialising in the sale of second-hand vehicles.

He learned the ropes quickly, and when the Malaysian government came up with a special licensing system to handle the import of foreign-made cars in the mid-1970s, the young Nasimuddin decided to take a stab at becoming an entrepreneur.

He thrived under the system. According to car industry executives, he was the beneficiary of close to 15,000 licences annually, permits which allowed him to import any foreign make or model of car into the country.

Two years ago, he gave the public a glimpse of his enormous wealth when he hosted his daughter's wedding, which was attended by several sultans and Cabinet ministers.

The bride and bridegroom arrived at the reception in a carriage drawn by two white stallions.

The immediate challenge for Tan Sri Nasimuddin's Naza Group is succession, which the late businessman did not put in place.

'He was a very tough negotiator and a control freak,' said a chief executive of a large car-parts manufacturer who has done business with Tan Sri Nasimuddin for the past decade.

Close associates say that the tycoon kept a tight leash on finance, adding that car import licences were issued directly to him.

Bankers and lawyers close to the businessman say that Tan Sri Nasimuddin's son S.M. Faisal and brother Shalahuddin Amin will for now play a major role in the company.

But, said a senior lawyer who has done business for the group: 'The problem with the Naza Group is that it was a one-man show.''

Knowing the PM, he'll rename it Kahiry-Naza Enterprise. Then, the AP's can all be transfered over, and Rafida can sit and stew in the side-lines for ll he cares...

APs are licensed corruption. This empire was built on that. They were the biggest recipients of the AP largesse, which undermined Proton and Kancil.

15,000 APs @RM 20,000 gross profit each is RM 300 million!! Thats our money that went to just one empire.

Nobody walks away clean with corruption. Even now after decades of empire building, just pull away the APs and the empire collapses.

Everyone who receives an AP is a beggar! Poor bugger!

This person made a handsome profit at the expense of rakyat, of course helped by the politicians.

On the questionable business practices, I felt the British should not abandon its investigation, normally this type problem do not originate from one single person, but a collective chain of eco-system (organization) that thrived on the illegality of the process/loopholes . The investigation should continue to dismantle such practice.

That's bullshit!! Give any ass 15000 AP's and they'll be bloody millionaires!! I'd like to be selling papers for 30-40k!!

"Close associates say that the tycoon kept a tight leash on finance.."

Well... He and his brother are two of a kind. The correct phrase would be "tight fisted". All those easy money (our money actually) are only for them to enjoy. They don't give a s**t about their employees let alone you and me unless its for PR stunts. Just a part of those "mamak baru" from United Mamak National Organisation.

Issue enough APs to any ordinary persons with an IQ score of below 100 and they will also become millionaire. I don't know why they praise this man so much as we all know that his business empire was built with the foundation of APs.

Most of the other UMNOputras that get APs just sells them anyway to some Chinese used car importer. Its money for doing nothing, thats UMNO's idea of creating Malay entrepreneurs. We end up paying both the AP holders and the used car importer, and because its a monopoly these "Chinese businessman" charge a hefty margin.

Eventhough Naza was a crony company, it is at least an actual operating company. So among the UMNO cronies, he was at least an entrepreneur.

BTW-There are plenty of MCA cronies in land scams so a lot of these chinese towkays are also bastards, not businessman.

Its all wrong in Malaysia, incompetent idiots succeeding by getting license from the government to **** the common folks.

GOD IS THE GREAT LEVELLER, what could Nasimuddin millions do to help him, nothing, during his rise he stepped on a lot of small malay businessmen, including his competitor, datuk arshad, both of them were rising evenly until , arshad's APs were stopped by whom,,, fat lady rafidah. when this happened his business died a natural death, arshad who lives in pj, now an old man in his 60s or early 70s, takes his morning works in taman jaya, will tell you his story how he appealed to Mahathir but to no avail, mahathir instructed rafidah but she over-ruled him giving all kinds of excuses, arshad tried to file police reports but nothing happened, well for those who want to learn more go ask him.
Like I mentioned before nasimuddin was a indirect proxy to somebody from the former cabinet. not mentioning any names.

Just as Yahya prospered because Proton was a "National" car and all protective measures were put in place to ensure the enrichment of Yahya and the almost "Superman" skills of management of Mahaleel !! So too did this crony Naza prosper because of the AP system and the fact that he was CGO of the company - Chief Gigolo Officer to Rafidah's dotter !!

Take away all the protectionism and what have we got left - RUBBLE & RUBBISH !! So much for the CRUMBLING towering malay ! HA !!

The same can be said of the former Chinese controlled bank Southern Bank. It was controlled by the CGO Datuk Tan, Chief Gigolo Officer to Tan Sri Lim Goh Thong's dotter !! That is how he controlled and managed the bank for so long, only losing out to the Sultan of Selangor eventually and being bought over by CIMB, another despot-controlled company by Najis and his younger brother !!

How to respect these Datuk's 'n Tan Sris and Tuns ... !! All made to look good ... ADA GAYA TAK ADA MUTU !!

this guy got rich at the expense of of malaysian car buying public. So while he got rich, other car buying buying got poorer and in debt. It is bad enough that govenrment tax heavily on fully imported cars. But to have these cost plus the AP cost into the picture, it is plain daylight robbery.
Scrap the AP and come out with a more morally jusitfied car import scheme.
