Press statement by Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Wanita MCA Deputy Chairperson

I read with deep regret Mabel Teoh’s article (NST Letters, 25 Apr 08) expressing her frustration over the Malaysian government’s policy of denying citizenship to children on the basis that they were born abroad to a Malaysian woman. A woman’s citizenship rights should be viewed on its own legal merit regardless of the citizenship status of the father.

The policy of not granting automatic citizenship to children of Malaysian women is in direct contradiction to the Federal Constitution Article 8(2) which reads that “there shall be no discrimination against citizens on the ground only of religion, race, descent, place of birth or gender in any law…”

MCA advocated for the incorporation of the term “gender” in Article 8(2) which was passed in Parliament in July 2001. Therefore, the government must commit to the application of the law in its entirety.

Policies which run counter to the premise of gender equality of the Federal Constitution are unconstitutional and unjust. MCA wants the present stand to be reverted to an automatic granting of citizenship to all children born of women holding Malaysian citizenship irrespective of their marital status and/or their point of residence.

Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun
Deputy Chairperson of Wanita MCA

Oh, you bitches have suddenly found your voices?

Was the muzzle removed by your Nazi masters in UMNO or are these all the lingering howls from being given a good hard kick on March 8th?

I doubt that the article was written by her. Most probably her press secretary. She can't even speak decent English for goodness sake. Remember the interview she gave Malaysiakini (alongside Tony Pua) just before the general election. This woman couldn't even articulate herself let alone speak proper English. Chew Mei Fun just go Fly Uncle Charlie's Kite off somewhere else!!

I am not a supporter of MCA and have never liked MCA. But I wish the language used in Temenggong's remarks against one MCA woman - specifically the first and last lines - could be more civilised and decent.

***We want to progess as a civilised, educated and cultured society, don't we??

{Sorry Temenggong, but do check the meaning of your last line - and show some respect)

how bout those that are discriminatory towards men?
why shouldn't men get the children when there's a divorce and both parties are capable of taking care of the kids?

why is it that only men face sexual abuse charges? are all women angels ?

Who's this Chew Mei Fun? Never heard of. Only now can voice out your feelings? Where're you before?

Is it because of the ketuanan Melayu policy that hinders the issuance of citizenship? But those who entered Sabah automatically became citizens through Project M. Vote PR and problems will be solved.

Dear Datin Paduka,

Talk is cheap. Let's see some action. Sue the government in a class action suit. This is, after all, a constitutional issue, and the government's policy is breaking the law.

If you have real guts, just sue the government instead of talking. After all, it has been 7 long years since "MCA advocated for the incorporation of the term “gender” in Article 8(2) which was passed in Parliament in July 2001".

By the way, it seems like MCA Wanita only now just realized that discrimination against women in Malaysia is endemic. Were you all blind and deaf over all these years?

No more MP position for chew, and now shes highlighting this.
What a cup cake she is.
chew, such problems ought to be debated in the parliament when you had the chance and position to do so, not now.
Not only the above story must be highlighted , but issues regarding the blanket ruling from the imigresen, polis rasuah and RELA that all ladies holding a PRC passport is a prostitute.
chew, you failed big time when you highlighted May13th as your election motto.
Chew, you also failed big time when you said NEP already ended.
You should have hired Lulu ( a blogger) as your adviser,Lulu also gives free advice, if you cant pay.
But, thank you to chew anyway for bringing up such issue, lets see the babiputras ..i mean umno will sees to it.

There is too much bias in the laws of Malaysia against women. In the UK women who marry foreigners and go and live in their spouses country then later try to return to Uk are penalised and often have a hard time bringing their kids into Britian. But an illegal immigrant can just walk into UK...with kids too and later get citizenship. The whole world needs a shake-up.

But back to Malaysia, the BN party are responsible for this and need to make sure all government agents responsible follow the law and be transparent about it...not lord it over all and sundry.

You know what? I don't give a rat who brings up this issue of citizenship discrimination for children or spouses of Malaysian women. All I care about is nothing is being done about it! This is an issue that should have been brought up again and again by the PR politicians.

To sum it up, being a non-Malay is bad enough in this country. But being a woman is even worse.

I am never a fan of Datin Paduka Chew MF.

Hey, speak of women being discriminated upon. Did you speak when
1. Bung Mohthar said bocor?
2. Did you peak when Mongolian C4?
3. Did you speak when norita shamsudin murdered?
4. Did you speak when Canny Ong killed?
5. Did you speak when women molested in 5-star hotel?
6. Did you speak when women losses rights to her dead son's body and properties.
7. Did you speak when women's dead husband refused burial for him?

Woman has rights, but open you eyes, cork your ears; there are more of abuses against women other than that hightlighted in the papers. Don't make statement because of March 8th.
