Voters want BN parties to merge into one which is multiracial

By Carolyn Hong, The Straits Times

WHEN Kelantan prince Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah laid out a multiracial vision for Umno last Friday, he astutely seized the agenda of reform for the Malay-centric party.

He was the first senior party leader to articulate a call for Umno to look beyond narrow Malay interests, and pulled the rug from under the party that is still caught in its formulaic response to the March 8 polls.

The polls suggest that communal politics has become a losing proposition.

A survey by the independent Merdeka Centre confirms as much. The results published yesterday showed that two in three voters believe the Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties should merge. They want a multiracial model.

Just as significantly, half the Malays did not consider it a betrayal to vote for the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP), which they traditionally regarded as too Chinese.

'For 40 years, the BN represented the best set of compromises possible in a multiracial society. It now has a chance to reinvent itself,' said Merdeka Centre executive director Ibrahim Suffian.

As Tengku Razaleigh noted in his speech, even non-Malays were flying the flag of the conservative Islamist Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) and voting for it.

'Why? They did this because they believed that PAS, based on Islamic principles, is fairer to non-Malays than Umno is,' he said.

He said Umno should become an entity trusted by all races.

It is evident that Tengku Razaleigh tailored his message for an audience wider than the Umno members he was addressing in his Kelantan division.

It is a signal to the BN that he is capable of taking on the opposition that is already flying a multiracial flag.

The opposition astutely read the sentiment among Malaysians who were tired of being buffeted by bickering over Malay rights and Islamisation in the past few years.

Its response was to offer a multiracial platform involving the DAP, PAS and Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Sticky issues such as PAS' vision of an Islamic state were quietly set on the back-burner. And the strategy paid off to the extent that some believe the political landscape may have changed permanently.

Still, it might be a little early to say.

'I would certainly put in a word of caution, as voters appeared to be voting more against BN than for opposition parties,' said Mr Tony Pua, DAP MP for Petaling Jaya Utara.

The governments in the five opposition-held states are working hard to keep the momentum going by implementing policies to promote the idea of justice over communal interests.

A classic example is the current hue and cry over a pig farming project in Selangor which PAS is supporting on the basis that Islam does not ban non-Muslims from eating pork.

'We have no problems with it,' said Dr Halimah Ali, the PAS state exco member for education and human resources.

Umno's Sepang MP Mohd Zin Mohamed's response was predictably along the old lines - he asked for a review on the grounds of religious and environmental sensitivities.

A few from the Malaysian Chinese Association and the Gerakan party have suggested reform, but they are isolated voices.

Said Gerakan secretary-general Chia Kwang Chye: 'The voters now don't care what colour or creed the candidates are.'

If you take away Ketuanan Melayu and Keris from UMNO what is left for them ... UMNO is trying its hand on Islam Hadhari now ... but sorry Pakatan Rakyat is the people's choice now.

If BN don't reinvent, they will be history by next GE.
The people have spoken, they want a change.

But how can BN reinvent when the main component party,
UMNO has no idea, about really working for the people.

For UMNO, it is about how to:
1. make more pockets
2. fill the pockets
3. find friends pockets to fill
4. wave the keris
5. create more pockets
6. and fill more pockets not mentioned previously

It is frightening!!

UMNO is just about 'Ketuanan Melayu'
UMNO leaders use all kinds of camouflage
to exhibit its racist nature.
It is the foolish Hishamuddion to weave the keris
and shout the hidden slogan which leed to its disastrous defeat
recently.
Ku Li is using another approach to attract support of other races.
Fall not into his trap! He is a skillful and experienced politician!

UMNO can continue to keep its' "Malay Supremacy" slogan and demise in the next election. What supremacy can a political party or race hold when they become irrelevant? The farsighted Dato Onn already had this vision 50 years ago, but it was rather unfortunate that his shameful grandson did just the opposite with his keris, hello Kerisham and gang time to reflect!

BN can't give up their race-based politics because they're made up of race-based political parties (UMNO for Malays, MCA for Chinese, MIC for Indians.) And even then these parties are run by the elites that do not really care about their own race anyway. That's why when BN proposes "mechanisms" for fund allocation to the 5 states under PR, the parties under BN just keep quiet. Solution: Get them out of the government and let PR take over and clean up the mess.

Let UMNO continue to weave the keris, continue to shout 'hidup Melayu, continue to lambast ' Ketuanan Melayu', continue to shout at the Chinese to balik Tong San, continue to 'dei Kiling - balik India', continue to hang on to special priveleges, continue to be arrogantly ignorant to the wishes of the silent majority, the 21century will not wait for them, the young voters will be colour blind, don't know about May 13, and come 5 years, BN will hammer its own final nail to the coffin and be shipped to Timbuktu or to Jurassic Park into oblivion.

PR and BN should merge into 1 party only!
I as a malaysian would really hope to see this happen!
then there will be no more UMNO, MCA, DAP, PAS, Gerakan, PKR and so on
racial politics is obsolete!
racial politics is like pentium 486
so its time for malaysia to move on..

========

Hogwash!!

The very reason you have an UMNO, is becos you "do not trust other races" - at least that is what you want your supporters to believe.

And you want others to trust you ..... in your dreams Kuli!
All you can do is cut deals with an emasculated ally, buy votes with contracts/ money from towkays and further divide the people based on R&R.

It will be a dream, or at least my dream, if both PR and BN are multi-racial parties.

For too many years Umno with the collaboration of other race-based political parties in forming Barisan Nasional, had been able to maintain political power in this country. With this absoute power, Umno was abe to influence the poor & illiterate village folks that only BN can look after their special-rights & interests. But along the way, this special rights was hijacked by those in power. So all benefits went to them and the process was created a new breed of super rich Umnoputras & their cronies, who even considered this as a licence to benefit whatever that can be benefitted. Even cheating & corrupt practices are O.K. Thus the poor folks remained poor because all benefits had been siphoned by this elite -group.
NEW voters of today, be they Malays, Chinese, Indians & others think differently. Being more intelligent and having a broader out-look than their village folks just don't want this system anymore because they know that this system breeds corruption, cronyism & neportism. That's why the Martch-8 political tsunami happened. They voted against communal politics.
