Najib pledges loyalty as Abdullah names him as successor
The Straits Times, 8 April 2008

DEPUTY Prime Minister Najib Razak yesterday thanked Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi for backing him as his political successor and promised to stay loyal. The endorsement by Datuk Seri Abdullah was made on Sunday as he launched attacks against his political foes and answered questions about their relationship after the shock results of the March 8 general election.

Speaking at a closed-door briefing for about 1,000 Umno chiefs and grassroots leaders on Sunday, PM Abdullah said there had never been any problems between him and Datuk Seri Najib. 'I assure you there are no problems between us, and he is the one who will be succeeding me,' the 68-year-old Premier said. He did not say when he would step down, the New Straits Times reported yesterday. 'I will know when to go, but give me a chance to implement what I have promised,' he said.

He repeated the remarks while in Sabah yesterday, telling reporters that he would not stay longer than he should as premier. 'I would retire one day but I could not leave in this kind of political scenario. I will retire one day, of course. I'm not going to stay longer than I should. But there are certain things that I would like to do now. I cannot leave at a time when the party is in this condition. I cannot leave at a time when we are preparing for the implementation of development projects. We have already promised the people. We will do it. I'm not going to stay on for years. Certainly not,' he said.

He was responding to a question on whether he had a date in mind for his retirement since he had named Datuk Seri Najib, 54, as his successor. Datuk Seri Najib, reacting to the Prime Minister's comments on Sunday, said he valued the trust and confidence of Datuk Seri Abdullah. 'I am thankful and touched by the Prime Minister's trust and confidence in me,' he told reporters.

He said Datuk Seri Abdullah had told him about the succession plan in front of a few senior officials, but Sunday's comments were the first time the issue had been made known to many people. 'I appreciate very much the Prime Minister's trust in me and I will honour Abdullah's request to me to continue cooperating with him as the Prime Minister,' Bernama news agency quoted him as saying.

The succession issue was aired at a time when former premier Mahathir Mohamad and veteran Umno leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah have been asking for Datuk Seri Abdullah to step down. Former finance minister Tengku Razaleigh is offering himself as Datuk Seri Abdullah's replacement.

The Prime Minister on Sunday lashed out at both his predecessor as well as Tengku Razaleigh. Among other things, Datuk Seri Abdullah said Tun Dr Mahathir had eroded public confidence in the judiciary, especially by sacking the No. 1 judge in 1988, Tun Salleh Abas. He also said the former premier had maintained a tight grip over the media, instructing the press to black out news of his opponents, and launched a crackdown in 1988 which saw the detention of 106 people, including politicians, under the Internal Security Act. Turning to Tengku Razaleigh, the Prime Minister said the former finance minister was responsible for Umno losing Kelantan in 1996.

***************************************
That was what The Straits Times (Singapore) reported this morning, which was similarly reported by all the Malaysian mainstream newspapers. Finally Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is fighting back. And this will certainly make the next eight months very interesting indeed, at least as far as the political scenario is concerned -- though we can’t say the same for the economic scenario, which will for sure react to these uncertainties in a most negative manner.

It is worth noting, and maybe to dissect as well, what Abdullah uttered at that so-called Sunday gathering with 1,000 Umno members at the PWTC. We will talk more about that Sunday ‘gathering’, maybe in another piece, and reveal the gathering that never was. Yes, there was no gathering as such. What it was, basically, was a show with many ‘props’ or ‘extras’, as they say in the movie business, to give an impression of a large crowd. But, as I said, we shall touch on that later once we get the full report from our ‘deep throat’ in Umno.

First of all, Abdullah talks about Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah losing Kelantan in 1996. 1996? Why 1996? Anyway, before we talk about that, let us take a step back and trace the steps that led to this so-called 1996 when Tengku Razaleigh lost Kelantan.

Umno (lama) was deregistered in 1988 and a new party called Umno Baru was created to replace it. Tengku Razaleigh plus the entire ‘Team B’ gang, Abdullah included, were not invited to join the new Umno. Now, let us take a step even further back. Why was Tengku Razaleigh and his Team B, Abdullah included, not invited to join Umno Baru?

The whole drama actually started a few years before 1998. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (then only ‘Datuk Seri’) had just taken over as the new Prime Minister after successfully pressuring Tun Hussein Onn into resigning. But Mahathir refused to appoint a Deputy Prime Minister and instead left it to the party to decide, in ‘true democratic fashion’, whom it wanted as its number two.

The result was a head-on clash between Tengku Razaleigh and Musa Hitam for what was, at that time, a vacant post. Mahathir then dropped hints that he needs a number two whom he can work with and Musa appears to be the candidate he can work with. Although Tengku Razaleigh was clearly the favourite of the Umno delegates, that ‘signal’ from Mahathir helped swing the votes over to Musa.

So it was not really a ‘let the members decide in true democratic fashion’ sort of situation. It was an appearance of that and some ‘pulling’ behind the scenes to help influence the result. And so Musa won instead of Tengku Razaleigh.

Invariably, Tengku Razaleigh felt cheated. No doubt it is the Prime Minister’s prerogative to choose his number two. But Tengku Razaleigh felt that Mahathir ‘owed’ him the post. And, to understand this, we have to take yet another step back to the time when Tun Razak was on his deathbed in a private London hospital.

Tun Razak knew he had to ensure that there would be a smooth succession once he was gone so he explicitly anointed Hussein Onn as his successor. He also said he wants Tengku Razaleigh as the number two. Tun Razak had great confidence in his disciple, Tengku Razaleigh, because this Prince from Kelantan was practically the architect and engineer of Malaysia’s economic program. Felda, Petronas, Bank Bumiputera, Bank Pambangunan, UIA, and many more, were the brainchild of Tengku Razaleigh. In fact, the PSA that Petronas made Exxon sign is, today, the model that all oil-producing countries use as the basis of their contract with oil exploration companies.

In that sense, Malaysia led the way in the oil industry and Tengku Razaleigh was the man who started it all. Many may also not even realise that Tengku Razaleigh owns the land that the PWTC-Umno headquarters sits on. He donated the land to the party and undertook the construction of the building, plus fully-furnished it, at no cost to Umno.

When Tun Razak died, Hussein Onn took over but he refused to follow Tun Razak’s advice on number two and instead wanted to choose Ghazali Shafie. When Ghaffar Baba, Mahathir and Tengku Razaleigh found out, the three of them confronted Hussein and made him choose from amongst one of them, all Vice Presidents of Umno.

Ghaffar Baba, who did not possess the basic educational qualifications, was out -- so it had to be either Mahathir or Tengku Razaleigh. But Ghazali bitterly opposed the idea of Mahathir becoming number two as he considered the latter a communist, anti-royalist republican. In fact, Ghazali had been trying to pin something on Mahathir for some time. Ghazali even detained Syed Hussin Ali under the ISA so that he could be ‘persuaded’ to squeal on Mahathir. Instead of ‘confessing’ that Mahathir was his communist boss, Syed Hussin chose to spend the next seven years in the Kamunting Detention Centre.

Tunku Abdul Rahman was also opposed to Mahathir. The Tunku said that the day Mahathir becomes Prime Minister would be the day that Umno will be destroyed. The Tunku went to his grave a mortal enemy of Mahathir and he never joined Umno Baru but died a member of the opposition Semangat 46.

Taking this cue, Hussein wanted Tengku Razaleigh as his number two but the Kelantan Prince politely turned down the offer as, he explained, he still had so many things to do for the country. Tengku Razaleigh then proposed that Mahathir be appointed the number two and then, when Mahathir goes on to become Prime Minister, he will come in as Mahathir’s number two. By then he would be ready for the job.

Well, Mahathir did eventually go on to become Prime Minister but he did not appoint Tengku Razaleigh as his number two. Instead, he let the party decide. But because of the hint that he favoured Musa Hitam, the party decided to follow the Prime Minister’s ‘advice’ and Tengku Razaleigh lost out.

Three years later, Tengku Razaleigh decided to try a second time. But this time it was no longer a ‘race for a vacant post’. Musa was already the Deputy Prime Minister so it was cleverly ‘painted’ as Tengku Razaleigh trying to ‘topple’ the number two. Toppling is negative, so Tengku Razaleigh did not get the support and lost.

Musa then asked Mahathir to sack Tengku Razaleigh but the Old Man of Malaysian politics was too smart for that. Without Tengku Razaleigh around, Musa would become too powerful. If he retained Tengku Razaleigh, then Musa can be checked. It was basically a very clever divide-and rule, checks and balance game that Mahathir is so fond of playing and is very good at.

Mahathir did not sack Tengku Razaleigh as what Musa wanted. He just ‘demoted’ him from Finance Minister to Trade and Industry Minister. And this made Musa mad as hell. Musa eventually resigned in a huff and, instead of appointing Tengku Razaleigh as the replacement, Mahathir ‘recycled’ Ghaffar and appointed him the new Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. And this time it was Tengku Razaleigh’s turn to become mad as hell.

Later on, Tengku Razaleigh invited Musa to his Gua Musang division meeting in Kelantan and, in his speech, the ex-Deputy Prime Minister announced that Tengku Razaleigh would be contesting against Mahathir while he will be doing the same against Ghaffar. Tengku Razaleigh, caught off-guard and clearly embarrassed, said nothing.

Musa then invited Tengku Razaleigh to his division meeting in Johor and the same stunt was repeated. Again Tengku Razaleigh said nothing. Either Tengku Razaleigh was ‘testing the market’ or Musa was trying to ‘batu api’ Tengku Razaleigh. Anyway, at the third division meeting organised by Manan Othman in Gong Kapas, Kuala Terengganu, Tengku Razaleigh responded when Musa announced that he would be going against Ghaffar while the Kelantan Prince will be challenging Mahathir.

The challenge eventually took place and both Tengku Razaleigh and Musa lost, though some say they won but were cheated of their win. Following that, Umno was deregistered when it was proven that one of the delegates to the assembly was an un-discharged bankrupt. Now, who was the man behind the move to get Umno deregistered and how did they do it? Well, maybe this posting from an Umno website can clear the air on that one:

Okay, there you have it -- and from an Umno man himself. Following this deregistration of Umno, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Hussein Onn quickly submitted an application to register Umno Malaysia. When Ghaffar found out, he also quickly submitted an application to register Umno Baru -- though this took place three days later.

As can be expected, the Umno Malaysia registration was rejected on grounds that the Umno name ‘had already been taken’ -- although the Umno Baru application was submitted three days AFTER Umno Malaysia’s application. As they say, the rest is now history. Umno Baru took off and Tengku Razaleigh and his gang of merry men were persona non grata in the new party, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi included.

Not left with much of a choice, and since Umno Malaysia had been rejected and he and his boys and girls were not welcome in Umno Baru, Tengku Razaleigh was forced to form his own party. And he did and this party was called Parti Semangat 46. In the 1990 general election, Semangat 46 teamed up with DAP under Gagasan Rakyat in the west coast, with PAS under Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah in the east coast, and with PBS in Sabah.

And that was when Kelantan fell, in 1990, when they would not allow Tengku Razaleigh back into Umno and he had to form his own party and remain in the opposition. So what is this talk about Tengku Razaleigh losing Kelantan in 1996? If anyone is losing it, that would be Abdullah.

Now, on the judiciary issue -- which Abdullah accuses Mahathir of destroying. Okay, let us say he did. The new de facto Minister of Law, Zaid Ibrahim, proposed that the government apologise to Tun Salleh Abbas for the injustice done to him. At the first Cabinet meeting that Zaid attended, he was whacked good and proper and had to reverse his stand and explain that that was just his ‘personal opinion’. Barely a couple of weeks into his new job and Zaid was made to eat his words. But why? Had not Tun Salleh Abbas been treated unjustly (dizalimi)? If Mahathir did what they say he did then the government should and must apologise, not only to Tun Salleh, but to the entire nation.

Then there is the issue of the Lingam Tapes and the judge fixing scandal that Mahathir has been accused of being involved in. This would mean that the recently-retired Chief Justice is tainted and should have been allowed to retire when he was due for retirement even if he can’t be sacked.

But Abdullah would not allow him to retire even though almost the entire country was up in arms. Then the Bar Council organised a march from the Palace of Justice to the Prime Minister’s office and 2,000 people took part in that march to hand over a protest note to the Prime Minister. But still Abdullah wanted to extend the Chief Justice’s term of office.

Finally, the Agong had to intervene and when Abdullah told His Majesty that he would like to extend the Chief Justice’s term of office, His Majesty put his foot down and said that the people are not happy with the idea and therefore His Majesty can’t agree to it. However, just when we thought all had been resolved, Abdullah appoints Umno’s lawyer to the post of President of the Court of Appeal -- whereby that puts him next inline as the Chief Justice of Malaysia. Umno’s lawyer as Chief Justice? And is Mahathir now to be blamed for this as well?

Let’s make one thing very clear. This is not a Mahathir-apology piece. Sure, he has done much of what they say he has done, plus probably more. What we want to focus on is the wrongdoings of this present administration, which they are conveniently trying to blame Mahathir for in an attempt to throw us off the scent.

Anyway, let us stop here for now though there is much to talk about. Maybe we can continue this later. Oh, by the way, before I leave, can you see how cleverly Abdullah names Najib as his successor so that we all throw up our arms and say, “What the hell, if Najib is next inline, then we had better just keep Abdullah around. He may not be the best, but at least he is not as bad as Najib.”

And we all assume Abdullah is not playing with a full deck of cards. Actually he is cleverer than many of us give him credit for.

I wondered why the local papers and some foreign ones made a big fuss of anything that came out from this guy. We have never perceive him as credible guy. A guy with credibility, substance and integrity is not our current PM. He was telling a lie on the eve of the general election and that brought the hammer down that shattered Malaysian people confidence in him.

It's not only the cheating from the PM. All the Umnoputras in his clique do the same . Two times, three times, whatever. Makes no bloody difference anymore. Personal freedom sacrificed, natural resources raped, public funds abused and so much wastage bleeding left and right for all these 5 years. This country surprising has been able to withstand this ongoing horror but the rakyat is surely and slowly awaken to realise the harm and damage. Enough IS enough. False promises and broken promises. If we cannot save this coutry called Malaysia, at least we can try to salvage whatever is left for our children. They do not deserve what their parents had seen and gone through. It is NOW or NEVER at all. Let the rakyat rise to the occasion and collectively make the transformation moment NOW.

Dear Pete,

I think you give too much credit to AAB for having any smarts. Whatever he is doing is very shallow. Only we "smarter" people look beyond the obvious and think that the sleepy fellow is actualy very "smart".

Actually, he appears to be only a crook at heart. And, not a very good one at that. At least Mahathir was a smarter crook... he gave us the illusion that as long as we had enough to eat, we should all be happy.

On the other hand, AAB forgot Clinton's adage, "It's the economy, stupid!". Be a crook by all means, but make sure that the peasants are so fat from their glutonny that they forget about civil society values. Heck, even the majority of Americans forgave Clinton for his indiscretions, both sexually and financially, as long as they were a bunch of happy gluttons.

When the bread-and-butter issues are not taken care off, then all the failings of any leader or government will be laid bare. And, the wrath of the peasants will be unleashed.

As things stand now, I agree with you that we are on the path of being another Angola. Or maybe even worse, like, heaven forbid, Zimbabwe. Perhaps at that juncture, a no-confidence vote in Parliament will allow our Agong to pick a better leader.

Whilst I agree that our focus should be on the present administration, my view is that this is as good a time as any for all the skeletons to be taken out of the closet, before UMNO closes rank and all the nations ugly secrets remain hidden. While I agree that it was aAB who appointed Zaki and it is 99.99999% certain Zaki will be the next CJ, we must remember that had Dr. M not weakened the judiciary to the extent that he had, perhaps, just perhaps, AAB would not even have tried to put Zaki there in the first place. So, may all the little birds continue, for the sake of this country; to expose what need to be exposed. After all, Malaysians love exposes!

TDM had already said this before, it has to be someone who is smart to be able to occupy that position.

As I see it, naming NTR as the successor would reduce the number of camps against him (AAB). At least for now, the NTR camp would not push him so hard to step down as NTR would be the next President/PM in waiting. NTR camp may also go all out to defend AAB from the onslaughts from TDM and Razaleigh/Muhyddin camp.

As it is now, the current going against him is just too strong. Giving the NTR camp some hope would diffuse some resentment from one camp at least. He need all the strength he could muster to survive.

It would be interesting to see how NTR will strategize if Razaleigh/Muhyddin were to do a “Razaleigh/Musa challenge” act again to the current AAB/NTR leadership. So far NTR has demonstrated that he is very patient and willing to wait. He may stick to AAB and defend AAB and his position together.

As for TDM, he should own up - no matter what. At least for rendering the "leadership" intellectually bankrupt and corrupt.
He passed on a car that was fit for "potong kereta" yards.
AAB has an opportunity to set things right now.
If he doesn't or cannot do it, he has to go & Kuli is the only person other than Muhyidin that has any calibre.

Whatever said & done - all leaders of UMNO need to come clean, and acknowledge the past.
Or else, they only set the stage for the collapse of UMNO Baru once again, which is quite likely.

AAB has to go, but without the possibility of other tainted weasels (promoted by old weasels) taking his place.

And a "unity Govt" is out of the question!

Talk about elected reps jumping like kataks from party to party, Bodohwi himself is guilty as hell on this, switching from UMNO to Semangat 46 and then from Semangat 46 (when he was sure it wasn't going anywhere) back to UMNO, much more athletic than Kermit the Frog !! Brownlee, Jason. "Ruling Parties and Regime Persistence: Durable Electoral Authoritarianism in Egypt and Malaysia" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, Philadelphia Marriott Hotel, Philadelphia, PA, Aug 27, 2003

Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Review Method: Peer Reviewed
Abstract: This paper demonstrates why electoral authoritarian systems benefit from party institutions that prevent leadership rifts by accommodating dissent and managing elite interests. I present Egypt and Malaysia’s experiences with ruling parties and regime persistence, the contrast outcome to incumbent defeat. By regulating leadership politics, the NDP in Egypt and UMNO in Malaysia have held together a dominant cadre and repeatedly blocked opposition forces from winning control of government.

I believe, after 5.13, TDM was the "annointed" one (as shown in his meteoric rise to the VC post), despite all the stories 'they' would want us believe.

Kuli was duped from day 1 into having fat hopes ...... aristocrats rarely gel with royalty!
Aristocrats tend to use royalty - as shown in the relationship between Razak & Tunku.

Tunku despite having a vision of his own could never realize it, becos the machinery was run by Razak.
Tunku was simply Razak's poster-boy to the world - Razak did everything from A to Z, and made Tunku think that he was PM.
That's why Tunku could brag that he was "the happiest PM in the world".

We shall concentrate more time and energy on the 5 state govt that are currently held by PR. Prove to the commoners that we can govern better and send the corrupted UNMO leaders to retirement for good. Or perhaps put them behind bars if there are evidents to convict them!

Thanks RPK, this is the best history lesson I have ever learnt.
I always thought Mahatir was Razak's man.. even he said he feels indebted to Najib because of his dad..

Its a pity So many great people like Tun Dr.Ismail & many others did not get thier chance to be Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah because of circumstances and will be obliviated in history..

We may even see The 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia in Next 5yrs!

In fact, the PSA that Petronas made Exxon sign is, today, the model that all oil-producing countries use as the basis of their contract with oil exploration companies.'

This article proofs that sometime brain only not enough in life, we need a bit of 'luck' like KJ or need to be 'clever' like AAB, especially in politics, especially in UMNOs world.

Anyway, I have a good mind to tell my daughter to start reading MT since she's always whining about how 'boring' malaysian sejarah is! I, for one, am learning so much of our history. And its really interesting reading about our history and malaysian politics from your perspective.

Ok. Looks like Tengku Razaleigh wants to be the PM of the Muslim Malays. The projects above plus his recent Malay-biased statements gives him away. Please tell me I am wrong. That he is actually a nationalist for all Malaysians, and not a racist.

Change the Present to Change the Future.

Dwell on the Past and the Future Will NEVER CHange.

The Rakyat Focus is for a Better Malaysia. Yet for UMNO-BN to have 50 years of unchallenged power ....certainly took their time to enrich themselves. It is this Greed that makes one ANGER Boils because the other spectrum are the homeless, poor, disadvantage, lacking freedom to change religion, being subject to bullying, fear and brain washing.

The Clean up must continue regardless of who is in power.....sometimes a REVOLUTION of Hunger and Anger is better to wipe them from Malaysia. How does one justify majority of UMNO Baru & BN Leaders & cawangan leaders in the $5-10 Million dollar league or more of wealth bothers many to the point of Anger.

You can be rich, but don't neglect society and a better Malaysia. We are humans too....beneth our skins we share the same blood, bone structure and DNA. Who the Hell allowed UMNO Baru and BN to treat US rakyat as their Play tool. In time we will March to your home and God help you if you have wronged the people proper.!!!

Do you see the picture ? Do you know why until now no Pakatan Rakyat leader ask AAB to step down ?. Even Najib take over, it is also a good target to shoot at him at the next GE. Dear RPK
Your narrative on the career of Tengku Razaleigh prompts a question at the heart of Malaysia’s future – a question that is also at the heart of the Malays’ identity.
WHAT, not WHO, is Tengku Razaleigh?

Inexorably, the answer lies in turning the question to Ku Li’s nemesis, Tun Dr Mahathir. WHAT is this man called Dr Mahathir?

Mahathir is many things to many people – dictator, iconoclast, visionary, vengeful destroyer. He is also many things to the Malays – an icon of regret or even disgrace to many, a pride to just as many. Not without justification, the corruption of the nation’s institutions and the hollowing out of UMNO are attributed to him.

Among his greatest sins is the corruption of the JUDICIARY – the institution that makes or breaks the progress of any society towards a greater civilisation. In democracies, the judiciary is the institution that truly ensures law and order, in the dispensation of justice in private affairs and the arbitration of contending politics in public affairs.

Few can match Mahathir as a public communicator but none can do worse than him as an isolated visionary. He could cajole none to be his true comrade in arms, to understand and share his vision and impatience for the nation and for the Malays – not any of his deputies and not the judiciary.

As an inheritance of the British, Malaysians have lived by the myth of an all-encompassing judicial independence – to be applied NO LESS to public affairs as to private affairs.

This myth – that the judicial arbitration of AFFAIRS OF STATE (as contrasted with the prosecution of private conflicts) must unfailingly in every instance be practised to objective moral and legal standards and is totally free of subjective judicial consideration and interpretation of the political needs of the state – does not constitute an obstacle where either the Executive is extremely powerful, or where there is a common understanding among even contending political forces (as in the USA and other powerful western ‘democracies’) of what and when are such issues of state superior to man’s moral and legal conscience.

It is moot now to say that if Tun Salleh Abbas and his eminent colleagues had not carried in their conscience this mythical baggage of British inheritance, our judiciary perhaps would not have suffered the destructive iron hand of Dr Mahathir, and today would still command the same respectability and trust in private litigation, and the same acceptance of its pliability in affairs of state, as enjoyed by their Singaporean counterpart. But alas, the man was too large for his time and too ‘un-Malay’ for any of his contemporaries or successors to share or even to understand his passion.

Too ‘un-Malay’ in his fierce anti-West defiance, in his unflinching insight and suspicion of the West’s nefarious intentions, as in all the good and the bad that he had done. Dr Mahathir could never have been born a scion of traditional Malay royalty.

The imprint that he has left on the nation’s consciousness, and on the Malays’ sense of confidence and identity, is as ephemeral or as real as only the future can tell, and as the next torch-bearer, whoever he may be in this debate, is bestowed with the qualities to grasp.

LOW DOWN ON TOP GUN ACADEMY

Every top gun appear to have been giving his next top gun advice on who should be the next next top gun.

Invariably, once taking over the gunship the next top gun would screw the previous top gun, his advice and his next next top gun, and go on to do just like the top gun before him.

And one next top gun seems to hold the record of being screwed over and over again but still sticks around.

Incredible but one should wonder why.

With such characters continuously coming out on top of an academy, you think you can trust the people from that academy?

This thing about Ku Li or Najib to succeed Abdullah - I find it funny and analogous to the guessing-game in Penang before the March 8 elections whereby Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon was teasing the media & the Penang people on which of the 3 possible successors he will pick as the new Chief Minister. In the end, all of them, including Koh lost their seats. Was damn funny!

In English, we call this "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched".

Judging from the amount of time UMNO people spent bickering and fighting for their posts (whether of Youth Chief or Party President), UMNO has lost touch with reality and may not rule for very long. Our future PM will not be from UMNO.

Razaleigh was in the thick of what became known as the Haw Par imbroglio of the mid-1970s, working with the Singapore-based Haw Par Brothers International Ltd, then an offshoot of the empire of British wheeler-dealer Jim Slater, to acquire control of London Tin, the British-controlled tin conglomerate, and the Sime Darby plantations conglomerate. This was to be achieved through a complex series of transactions by which Pernas would end up as the largest shareholder of both. It failed when Singapore accused Haw Par of financial irregularities and later jailed a senior executive and the head, Donald Watson, fled to Ireland.

But it proved a short-lived setback for Ku Li. Within two years, a share and proxy battle orchestrated by merchant bank Rothschild – which was also a part owner of Bumiputera Merchant Bankers – brought Sime under Malaysian control and

on d one hand u say our ultimate aim shud b to hv a two-party system where both sides r almost equally matched. one to check n balance d other. i take this to mean dat since umno is still pretty strong, wit more seats in parliament than all d opposition combined, v shud boost our support for d opposition even more, to achieve dat balance.

now u tell us to lay off criticizing umno too much, let it heal, undergo reform n let it continue to lead d country lest v want another may 13. wudn't this b like giving them a second wind to wipe out our recent gains? read d utusan n tell me they r not intent on going back to their old ways? r u telling us dat an umno under mahathir's annointed successor wud not do d same???

since u also hv no confidence d opposition will b able to repeat their success, doesn't this make d effort to change d federal government even more urgent?

Do not let the smoke screen blind us. Are the Malays in general ready for progress? Are they ready to compete in a level playing field? if 80% of the Malays are not ready, then Malaysia is not ready.

The Malays hold the political power. And and there is no way, any other race can take that. As a Chinese, we have to continue to progress and continue to fight for our rights. Chinese by default, is always an opposition in the Malay eyes. Until the day, where the majority of the Malays embrace human rights and end of all discriminations, then you will not see any significance improvement in Malaysian's life.

The next PM should be from Pakatan Rakyat. Why should it be UMNO still? They will lose their pants and grip when Anwar returns. Malaysians are looking for that day. UMNO and BN through history, shows that they have never did any good gor the Rakyat except to fatten their pockets. If the ACA really does their job, they can see (even without investigating) that the various politicians in UMNO are all multi-millionaires some even billionaires!

One way to stop this rot is to ensure that politicians CANNOT do business while they are in public office, have to declare theirs and their family's assets every 6 months publibly in a known internet website. They should however be compensated with high salaries though. The ACA should be independent and should investigate asap when there are any doubt of unlawful gains from public office of these politicians. Can UMNO and BN do this? Nah!!!!!!

Best for politicians from sabah and sarawak to join in pakatan rakyat coalition and form a new govenrment of peace/equality and justice. Here is something most of you would not know about Tengku Razaleigh, I would like to share it with all of you.

Tengku use to have a Kelantan Business partner, a china man, who almost join Tengku in all his venture 50% / 50%. Between the two of them I would say they own 100% of all Kelantan prime land.
One day this good friend of Tengku die of a heart attack. His left behind a wife and 3 children, oldest is at the time about 12 or 13 or so. A few days after this good friend has pass away, Tengku visited the family with his lawyer with a whole bunch of papers for the wife to sign, guess what ????

Tengku actually sign to this family all those land he is holding which he think should belong to his good friend, even those land in question is register under Tengku's name.

The land grant (Paper) that Tengku has sign back would not fit even 3 large bank deposit box. All lawyer fees is being pay by Tengku. The family got it all free.

I would not like to put names here but please check which Chinese family own most of the commercial land of Kelantan.

See now why I would back Tengku over anyone else. At least he has honor and compassion, good qualities that is sadly lacking in current leadership.
