Will Johor Umno break the bad news to Pak Lah on Friday? PDF Print

The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — When Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi visits Johor this Friday for a closed door session with senior state Umno politicians, he will face his moment of truth.

The most powerful Umno state in the country is leaning towards asking the party president and prime minister to consider making way for a successor. They are unsure if he should set out a time table for departure immediately or if he should contest the party elections in December.

But the general view among division heads who met on Saturday is that perceptions are powerful, and that the perception hovering around Abdullah is that he is a weak leader and that his family has inordinate influence over him.

A division leader told the Insider: “We understand that these perceptions are untrue but Umno members believe these things and Pak Lah will not be able to govern effectively or unite the party. It is not going to be an easy decision for Johor Umno but we feel that we have a responsibility to let the president know of our sentiment."

Johor is considered the bastion of Umno and party candidates in the state have consistently done well in even the most difficult of elections. Election 2008 was no different with all Umno candidates winning their seats. But nearly everyone came home with a reduced majority. If Johor Umno sends Abdullah a signal on Friday that he should go, this could embolden other states.

Among the big names who attended the Johor Umno meeting were state information chief Dr Puad Zarkashi, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin, Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Datuk Shahrir Samad and Datuk Halimah Sadique.  Absent was Education Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein.

From information gathered, it appears that only Datuk Shahrir felt that Abdullah should be given the opportunity to carry out the reform agenda for the party and country. Many of the others believed that it would be difficult for the Abdullah to command the confidence of the party, given the depth of anger towards him and Khairy Jamaludin over Election 2008. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Ghani Othman, who chaired the meeting, was a man of few words on Saturday, more intent on listening to what the strongmen on the ground had to say.

Still, Johor Umno is in a quandary: how to communicate their sentiment to Abdullah and how to ensure that any transition of power is smooth?  They know that the PM is a good man and is generally liked by Malaysians but Johor Umno believes that the need of the party takes precedence over everything else.

No names were mentioned as Abdullah’s successor but the sentiment seems to be that Najib is the best man for the job. What they are clear about is that in the new political landscape of the party, there is no place for an official role for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Neither will Anwar Ibrahim be welcomed back in any capacity.

Johor Umno appears to be less clear on how to make the party more relevant. A few believe that the party should be populists in outlook and outdo the People’s Pact to win the hearts and minds of Malaysians. This idea generally did not find favour with many in the room.

The consensus appears to be that Umno has to strengthen itself and continue to be relevant to the Malays first. Only after it fights off Parti Islam SeMalaysia (Pas) and PKR and secures the Malay ground, can it think about become more appealing to non-Malays.

This strategy is at odds with what Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s road map of reform for Umno. The Kelantan prince believes that Umno has to shed its arrogance and chauvinism and represent the aspirations of all Malaysians. His plan seems more in tune with the voter sentiment of March 8.

The discussion among Johor Umno politicians shows how rattled the party is now that its eminent position in Malaysian politics has been shaken. Everyone knows that the party has to change but nobody has a clear idea of what to do.

Its amazing with all those egos in that room and they could not come up with a good plan. Tunku Abdul Rahman had forseen such a day when he refused to meet with Dr. M on his deathbed.

The failure is really a product of 'Malay right' and NEP. When you keep holding on to the past, you can't look to the future and beyond.

There are those who can see the obvious but these over-grown children of NEP and 'Malay right' cannot see the jungle from the trees.

The consensus appears to be that Umno has to strengthen itself and continue to be relevant to the Malays first sounds appealling to the Malays. But Malays has also learnt over the years that the "Malays" they are referring to here are the Malays in UMNO. The ordinary Malays sees UMNO as a bastion of Malay elitist and brings no benefit to the Malays in the street. To benefit ordinary Malays must be an UMNO member and must succumb to the tradition of sucking up to the party hierachy and must get used to paying "tolls" and "commissions" to get through power barriers..

Pak Lah or najis, same; however the former is a "better" choice if minus the SIL & his mat rempits (he's stupid to be associated with them). The latter, if chosen, the wife will be the power behind the throne. Imagine a woman PM behind the scenes that we are all unaware of? What a joke this country is.

I don't think AAB can AFFORD to lead anymore with all this resistance, he is just going to to make the pain more agonising. The honourable thing to do is to step aside and let the members decide via election. Why wait till December?
Why want to pass to Najib?
UMNO should look at more viable options to reform , look at new breed of leaders. There are more capable ones in line.
Muhyiddin looks promising, Zaid and Shahrir will be my favourites if I was in UMNO with a broader sense of mind for true reform agenda.
No point choosing an alternative who adopts same approach to issues. Only difference that could make is that the other person may be more awake than the current PM

If UMNO carries on this line of thinking, it might as well not contest in the next election. Not only will it stand to lose the Non Malay votes but also the educated Malay voters who have see no reason for racial politics. True that the racial divide is still with us and we are far from shedding the racial mentality but I hope GE12 has shown that we can survive without it. We have dipped our toes in untested waters and found the courage to go for a dip....maybe we will finally learn how to swim with each others help.

And we the people of Malaysia must realise and teach others who do not know better, that to do this we must be willing to throw down the crutches offered by these racial based parties. Yes, I threw my vote behind the (then) Opposition but they have not really shown that they are completely willing to shed racial politics either. It is the people who must demand they do this. And to do do that, we must be willng to embrace the concept of one Malaysian Identity for all.

The senior leaders of the government need to perform a self assessment on why many people have lose confidence in the government in the last election. If a leader do not have the sufficient confidence of people, it is logical that the leader should make way for other more capable leaders to come in.

A good leader should be willing to let go for the sake of the country. We must think of the country first. The last elction has shown clearly that people want change and transformation of the way government serve the people.

People wants a government to be fair to ALL RACES whether they are Malay, Chinese, Indians or any MALAYSIAN. This is because ALL RACES pay taxes to the government, ALL RACES hold the same Malaysian identity card, ALL races are born in MALAYSIA. So therefore the government must be fair to treat ALL races the same in terms of distibution of wealth, giving out loans to entreprenerus, etc

A good government should free from corruption.

There is nothing wrong for a person to admit their mistake and admit they have not been effective. Great Leaders should be able to take responsibility for their leadership of a country. The best philosophy is to choose a leader that has the confidence of the people. We also have seen previous prime ministers in the country make way for new leaders to take over their place.

Just like in some big companies in Malaysia, there are times the CEO of the company have to resign, to make way for other people to lead the company. This is to ensure the company will continue to prosper and not suffer. So in a company in Malaysia, we can see there are many times, the CEO will let go their positions to give others a chance to run the company.

It is dignified and honourable to be able to let go one's position and to make way for another person to step in. there is nothing wrong to resign and let others have a chance to lead the country. To be able to let go one's position is an ethical thing to do.

No. No such "bad news" will be communicated to the Party President. Each and every elitist in Johor UMNO will only listen intently, watch each others' statements, actions and reactions, evaluate privately all information and rumours gathered and decide on their options post May 2008. The expected statements in line with the mood of the day will of course be made but it will be folly to take everything said literally. The up and coming leaders of Johor UMNO realizes that big decisions may have to made, thinking "outside the box" is now mandatory - not for the survival of UMNO but their own individual political future.

Hidden in plain sight !

Actually it's no secret to UMNO inner circle. It's only a secret to UMNO ordinary members who were fed with a diet of UMNO invincibility and arrogance.

The answer were there from the last few elections where the disillusioned non UMNO Malays exceeded 60% of the Malays and voted against BN (i.e. UMNO).
BN were returned to power on the casting votes of the minorities i.e the Chinese, Indians and others as clearly shown and tracked by the Election Commission from all the returned numbered ballot papers and i.c. nos. When Kelantan was won back by BN it was all due to the minorities casting votes of the non-Malays.

By instead of admitting to the other races that they were important partners in BN and adjusting the Govt policies/stand treatment of the other races to a more equitable stance, the Govt of TDM treated the other races as fools and decided to play hardball with them.

The other BN component parties were often ridiculed and humiliated before their members by UMNO. Even the choice of their leaders need to be to the approval of TDM. TDM told the other components of BN that UMNO actually do not need them to win election and form the Govt. After all at every election all UMNO need to do was to scare the Chinese, Indians, and other races with the mention of the magic words "May 13th" and the other races would vote for BN!

Is it so difficult for UMNO to comprehend the present situation. It is so hard for UMNO to admit and say to the other races that they are badly needed? Maybe their (UMNO) prides and arrogance are more important than their sense of survival?? Or prehaps even now they are still too dense to grasp the situation?

I seriously doubt this thing will happen because what is the point of telling Badawi to resign but have no clue how to move forward? Their complain is poor leadership but they offer nothing. Unless they are pushing for Muhiyiddin, there is no reason to do this. Najib is not going to do any better. Everyone knows that. But if they push for Muhiyiddin, Badawi will point out Najib is fight and that will be worst.

No, Badawi will not be asked to step down by Johor UMNO but he may get a earful that he need to think about succession and that means maybe NOT Najib...

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move.
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours,
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines,
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want.
Sorry, my dear.
But where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns.
Don't bother, they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer,
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns.
Well, maybe next time.

As the bastion of UMNO, Johor UMNO lives in the glory of its history.

Najib to take over – Johor UMNO still thinks that the majority of Malays are stupid. As our beloved Tengku probably foresaw, uncontrollable greed will lead to intra-racial strive among the Malays, as it would happen in any mono-ethnic nations.

The greed in UMNO has reached beyond control by any one leader. Badawi kept practically all the same looters in his first cabinet – despite his 2004 mandate to make changes. Why? The politics of UMNO is so deep in shit, greed and cloak-and-dagger intrigue that the first rule for any UMNO leader is: Don’t Upset the Gravy Train. Badawi’s and KJ’s attempt at putting up some fresh looters and personal loyalists for the GE has inevitably upset the apple cart. The behemoth has swallowed the man.

No doubt the UMNO elite would put their hopes with Najib – after all he is the image of the aging UMNO who understands the money rules of the game too well -- who will wind the clock back to the days when the Malay ground was led by simple teachers and ketuas kampong, and in the process turn off the tap for these elites. Ha, ha, ha. As if the cronies will just lie down and die and give the party back to the simple folk.

UMNO’s very dilemma is its manipulation and contempt for the “Malay Ground”, suckering and exploiting the very source of its sustenance. Johor UMNO is still living in history because history is in its DNA. This is a truism – those who find it hardest to face reality are those who wear history as their badge of eminence. This aging behemoth is forever chained to the fetters of its UMNO history.

These decrepit antiques just can’t see that PAS has out-lived them as a relevant historical force and PKR may out-live them as a modernising force for the New Malay on the ground.

So it is back to UMNO is Malay and malay is UMNO. haha. Tak malu.

It is the people who makes the party and never been the party making the people.
Many party officials are unto themselves and are merely making use of people to fulfill their greed, no more and more so with UMNO.

Najib as the next PM? How can Malaysia face the whole wide world when the whole world believes that he is somehow connected with the Altantuya case. UMNO can have no shame but Malaysians do. Besides, UMNO has already trumpeted Islam being Malaysia's official religion and many went on to claim that Malaysia is an islamic country and that Islam is this and that.

Come on,let's get real. Najb shall never be allowed to be PM of Malaysia. If UMNO is reluctant to connect him to the mongolian case, there must be plan for him to leave on the quiet. Contest against him in the UMNO election and he retires.

Malaysia definitely can do without Najiob.

UMNO Johor should be brave and bold enough to tell AAB that he should make way.
Tak payah lah nak berkias lagi. Tell him straight in the face he is history, so that he will be able to make a fast decision, to quit of course. If you as head of division owes a duty of care for all Malaysian, esp the Malays, tell AAB right away that he is not wanted. It will just be as bad for the Chinese, whoever comes into power. I don't see any improvement for the non-Malays if Najib Altantuy takes over. He will bring kerismudiin as his deputy.

You know what is the common bond between these two, besides the fact that they are cousins? Both of them wants the Malays to bathe their keris in Chinese blood. Najib also mentioned that there will be no ending date for the NEP.

MCA will be further alienated in BN, besides more bad news for the Chinese.

Party above everything or anyone else. That's right but UMNO has to figure out how they can survive and remain relevant. If they retain any of their old values and philosophies, and in particular they stick to ketuanan Melayu, they would be writing their epitaph. KuLi has given them a choice - a different path and perhaps a glimmer of hope. The warlords are destroyed. Any good leader will make use of this opportunity to make sure they remain dead, so he situation can be rejuvenated. Lets see if anything new will emerge from this meeting.

They have identified the crack in the dyke, but sticking the digits to plug the holes is an interim plan. When all eyes are stuck on the holes, they probably will miss the big picture when the entire wall collapses.
