The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 – Just how far is Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) willing to go to win over Malaysia’s political middle ground? Pretty far, judging by some of its actions since March 8.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang sounded like a true-blue reformer at Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam on Monday night; MP Khalid Samad did what no other Muslim politician has done before and spoke to Christians in a church and Kedah MB Datuk Azizan Abdul Razak assured Sikh leaders that longstanding issues over temples in the state would be resolved.

Just how far is Umno willing to change to meet the demands of a more discerning middle-class? Not very far, judging by events since the party and its partners in the Barisan Nasional coalition were stunned in Election 2008.

The party is in full swing blame-mode, looking for individuals to blame for its rejection, rather than examining why Indians, Chinese and urban Malays were willing to give their votes to a collection of political novices. There is a legitimate concern that the party is going to become more nationalistic and narrow-minded as it seeks to regain its secure footing in Malaysian politics.

An Umno division leader from Johor told The Malaysian Insider: “There is a danger that we could miss the opportunity to reform, with the focus being on party elections. But it is difficult to talk about being relevant to Malaysians when we are debating our relevance to Malays.’’

There is a greater danger of Umno becoming more like the PAS of old – a party straitjacketed by dogma and a conservative spine. If it does go down that path, it will have a difficult time convincing Malaysians who have voted for change that it is worthy of their support.

There was a time when every reference to PAS was coupled with its plan to set up an Islamic state and its fixation on hudud.

When Anwar Ibrahim began cobbling together the PKR-PAS-DAP alliance he made it clear to PAS leaders that they should drop the Islamic state platform if they were serious about winning non-Malay support. They did so and left it out of their election manifesto, encouraged also by PAS election strategist Husam Musa who felt that the party would be confined forever to the sidelines if it only appealed to Muslims.

It is still too early to say if the more moderate approach by PAS is driven by political expediency or will it be part of a permanent and genuine desire to reshape the party and reach out to all Malaysians.

But the success of the political experiment has somewhat liberated PAS. Ironically, because of their strong religious credentials, their politicians seem willing to take chances which the more “progressive’’ Umno politicians were unwilling to do.

So when Khalid Samad visited the Church of Divine Mercy and thanked the congregation for supporting him, he was breaking new ground. Even Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would have been afraid to step onto church grounds lest he is accused by his party of being a supporter of Christianity. When he agreed to attend the Christmas celebrations last year, his officials were pleased that the function was in a hall next to the Archbishop’s residence.

In contrast, Khalid seemed at ease as he assured the Catholic audience that PAS would be fair to all religions. He noted that Parti Islam SeMalaysia’s name conjured up fear and frightening images among non-Muslims. But in 18 years, the PAS government in Kelantan had not discriminated against non-Muslims, he said.

For the Christian community which has felt that its space and freedom of worship were being eroded under an increasingly arrogant Barisan Nasional, those soft tones by Khalid have been reassuring.

Also pleased was the Sikh community in Kedah. For years, they have complained about the status of temples in the state. Now, the new Kedah MB Azizan Abdul Razak has assured the Sikh community that he would personally resolve land-status issues. Azizan belongs to the conservative religious class of the party.

The leader of that class is Abdul Hadi Awang. He has called Umno politicians infidels, and has made even the younger members of the party cringe with his fire-and-brimstone style. Yet, look at how he has been happy to play second-fiddle to Anwar and tone down his rhetoric.

Last night, he told 25,000 people that the PKR-DAP-PAS coalition would focus on reforming the judicial system, abolish the Internal Security Act and several other legislation, make the Anti-Corruption Agency independent and revamp the Election Commission. Missing was any reference to the Islamic state.

What PAS has succeeded in doing over the past 12 months is convince even its long-time critics that it is a more palatable option to Umno’s arrogance and its narrow-minded approach to religious and race issues. If PAS can move further to the middle ground and be a responsible member of the People’s Pact, it will be able to win over more non Malays.

On Saturday, the MIC branch in Simpang was dissolved and 110 of its members quit the party to become members of the PAS Supporters Club.

Bukit Gantang MP Roslan Shaharom, speaking at a temple, said the welfare of the former MIC branch members and members of the Indian community would be taken care of.

"We will take care of you because any problems affecting the Indian community will also affect members of the other communities," he said. More than 95% of the Indian voters in this constituency voted for him.

UMNO still don't realise that it is the racial and religion disharmony they instigating on that brings their downfall. Go ahead UMNO with your racial discord and fight hard for your malays. The other malays do not need your help. We are all Malaysia Malaysians.

Kudos to PAS !!! they are more open minded.

It pleases me so much to read this article, especially if all that is reported in it is true and accurate. As a Chinese Malaysian, I just hope my fellow Chinese Malaysians who are still skeptical on PAS will read this and appreciate its message.

Praise and respect must be given to the PAS leaders who are strong in faith enough to feel that speaking in and/or visiting another religion's place of worship will in no way make them less faithful to their own religion or weaken their own faith. TABIK !!!

If PAS can be openly accept any races, any religion, and fair administration, I believe that PAS will get more supporter ever. As shown, ppl want PAS to be more open and never use the ISLAM kudos law in the non-muslim society, and stay focus on development are the main challenges for them in order to go further. Let PAS show, what actually PAS can deliver and ideology of his future administration skill will be the main agenda for ppl to monitor. Hope positive things will go along the revolutions, and at the same time count down for BarisanNeraka.

PAS can still uphold Islam by governing the 5 states with integrity, humility, morality, justice , good governance and being corruption free. All these will please God.
We can have very good government without calling it an Islamic state.
What is the point in calling this an Islamic State, as what UMNO does, while all its leaders are steeped in sin.

Lets give where credit is due. We all know PAS will never give up its Islamic state agenda but since PAS is now willing put other priorities ahead of Islamic labelling, its a good opportunities for non-Muslim in this country to engange PAS on the debate of what a viable/acceptable Islamic state is.

The debate should cover a wide ranging and details including the implication of Syariah law whose literal-wholesale is not acceptable to most Malaysians. Inter-faith dialogue cannot be put on the back burner if Pakatan Rakyat is to go forward.

Khalid Samad visiting the Church is evidence enouth to remove fear with the non muslim that was planted by the BN. I remember reading a letter to Malaysia kini that the PM or DPM did not respectfully send their condolence to the demise of the Revered Chief High Priest of Malaysia and Singapore. I was in Brickfields Temple to pay my respect and I was touched by seeing Muslim and Hindus and many noble people pay their respect. Even if the Umno Leaders are busy the least they can do is send the condolence through the press to all peace loving Buddhist in Malaysia. Respect is earned and not bought!. Now every citizen witness the advocacy of Islam by the PAS. BN have been planting hatred to the people just to selfishly hold onto their rule to satisfy their needs and greed. Rotten is the word. I am looking forward to the Pakatan Rakyat to include Muslim into the interfaith grouping to understand better the role of inter religious harmony that we can live with freedom from fear. Let us all unite and dismantle the BN for good

The debate of where is UMNO heading is interesting. They are fighting over the soul of the party. All of Badawi wasted political capital in the last 4 years is now clear and evident. His critics told him from the start he was wrong that Malaysia did not need a new vision. Now he really can't hide from it anymore but at a time he is weakest to do anythimg about it.

Those who look to Dr. M and Ku Li are fooling themselves. The Malays don't want to go back to yesterday. They may yearn for the comfort and party given by Dr. M but they don't want to go back. The problem is they don't know what they want and that is why leadership is sorely needed. That is why if Najib is chosen its further delay of reform of the party. "glocal" guy is not worthy of his father.

Anwar, at least publicly, is more of a future for Malays than anyone in UMNO. Mukhriz, so long as he does not stick 100% with Dr. M's ideas, has a chance to steal Anwar's agenda from him. But will he?

I say its 'while elephant play, the mousedeer/grass dies'.

PAS has made significant compromise towards making a M'sian Malaysia. We should all give Pas our encouragement & every opportunity to prove what they want to do. As for UMNO, this party have proven themselves to have no shame in promoting hatred, telling lies, stealing from their own people in the name of religion & race etc. I wonder how any right thinking malay or bumiputra can support a party that uses so many devious means to benefit the so few within the party, leaving crumbs to the majority.

A concerted effort must now be made that from henceforth the people's coalition will now be referred to as PAKATAN RAKYAT and not pas, pkr, dap.
All thoughts, actions, words, progress must now be as PAKATAN RAKYAT and not otherwise.

Viva PAS!

Our children should grow up not to fear another rakyat's religion but taught to understand and respect them. The children of today have good examples to follow - Pakatan Rakyat leaders that lead by example, walk the talk, etc.

These actions should not be a one-time only but MUST continue! We are after all Malaysians - multi-religion & multi-cultured with multi-ethnic background.

The old demon fart mamak and his likes believe that it was Pak Lah's poor or bad leadership which cause UMNO (BN) the March 8 debacle. They believe that malays will always support UMNO and BN blindly so long as UMNO show the malays the NEP baits. Thus they believe that getting rid of Pak Lah is all that needs to be done.

That is how the old demon fart mamak looks at malays. This mamak truly despise and look down on the malays, who foe tens of years have been fooled by this old demon fart mamak.

It seems like PAS is finally putting on its thinking cap. However, lets hope that what PAS is doing is genuine and not another drama to gain political milage.Only time will tell, lets not get excited about what PAS is doing. Seems like malaysians are so easy. For 50 years those politicians have taken the people and the country for a ride. So lets not get carried away and get deluded by the politicians. Lets see what is PAS's view on Lina Joy, Subhashini among others. Does PAS believe in the freedom of religion?

Biztrack,

There is nothing wrong for any Muslim to visit other religion's place of worship. In fact, there is nothing wrong at all for a Muslim if he decided to pray there, as long as he is praying to Allah. The important thing in Islam is "Niat". So practically, I can pray anywhere I want as long as the place is clean and my praying is to Allah.

Umno brand of religion is convenient Islam,if there is such a word..????
They will utter the holy word of Islam whenever it is profitable to be Islamic but will happily share a bottle of Guinness Stout or anything that is HARAM in Islam with you if they feel like it and got nothing to lose. Theirs is a brand of Islam that is not orthodox but they will try to out-Islam even the most pious of the true Muslim. They are the true unbelievers by professing what they don't really believed in but said they do and they managed to hoodwink the rest of us for such a long time because we let them.We will expose them in time to come with the technology we now have by naming and shaming them in public.

Just wait and watch.

Meanwhile, those ulamaks in PAS really practised what they preached and I abstained from critisising them.
