Back to the future: the fall of Saigon revisited PDF Print

Image

30 April 1975 was the day that Saigon fell. And it fell because the government did not have its fingers on the pulse of the nation. 30 April 2008 may be the day that Barisan Nasional -- and therefore Umno as well -- falls after getting a beating on 8 March 2008.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Saigon finally fell on 30 April 1975 after a protracted war that saw countless lives lost. The fall of Saigon was not about superior firepower because that is exactly what the Vietcong did not possess. If anyone had superior firepower it was the vanquished, not the victor. But in a mere three days the superior Americans were sent packing back to Washington with their tails between their legs.

The fall of Saigon and eventually that of the entire Vietnam can be attributed to one fundamental problem. The government was in denial mode. They did not understand what the real problem was and they failed to recognise that the army no longer had any will to win. The war against communism can’t be won with guns alone. The people must also have the desire to reject communism. This was the secret of the British success in its war against the Communist Party of Malaya.

The British realised that the government cannot win the war against communism or communist terrorism. It has to be the people themselves who must want to reject communism. To achieve this, the British embarked on a campaign to win the hearts and minds of the people. It can’t be a war of guns or of superior firepower. It has to be a ‘war’ of winning over the support of the people.

This was what the British saw. But this was not what the Americans saw. So Malaya sustained while Vietnam fell. And the Malaysian government took the route of the Americans rather than that of the British in the recent general election. And the 8 March 2008 general election proved what a disastrous route this can be. Barisan Nasional thought it had superior firepower and it threw everything it had at the opposition. But where the opposition lacked in money and media control it more than made up for in strategy. And where the government failed, the opposition succeeded. And where the opposition lacked in ‘firepower’, it compensated for by winning the hearts and minds of the voters.

This morning, Umno organised a forum at the Singgahsana Hotel in Petaling Jaya to conduct a post-mortem on the recent general election. The purpose of the forum was to explore what went wrong and where Umno should go from here. But judging by the rhetoric and statements that came out of that forum today, it is clear that Umno still does not get it. They still do not have their fingers on the pulse. They still fail to understand what went wrong on 8 March 2008 and what needs to be done to restore the lost fortunes of the party that is the lead partner in the ruling coalition.

30 April 1975 was the day that Saigon fell. And it fell because the government did not have its fingers on the pulse of the nation. 30 April 2008 may be the day that Barisan Nasional -- and therefore Umno as well -- falls after getting a beating on 8 March 2008. The reasons are clear, though it may not be clear to Umno. But what is more of interest is not the reason for the 8 March 2008 ‘disaster’ but what is happening behind the scenes to cushion the fall of those who walk in the corridors of power.

Those who walk in the corridors of power no longer have any doubts that 30 April 2008 may be the day the newly-formed opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, takes the reins of power. With its 82 seats in Parliament it is already more than halfway there. All it needs is another 30 seats to give it a simple majority in Parliament. If it gets more than that, even better, but 30 seats will do the trick for the meantime. Once the Barisan Nasional government falls, the stragglers will swing over easily enough because politicians always like to associate themselves with the winner, never with the loser.

Patrick Lim tried his best to salvage whatever little left he could salvage. As soon as the results of the election became known, his fortune started dwindling at a rapid pace. When the stock market opened the Monday following the elections, he saw more than a quarter billion Ringgit disappear from his books. It was the most painful Monday in his entire life -- as it was for the rest of the fourth floor cronies who were left holding paper that was no longer worth what it was just two days before that.

Seeing that Penang was now an opposition state, his flagship project, Penang Global City Centre, was doomed to become history; and the market reacted. When it was announced that approval for the project had never been given in the first place, that nailed his plans to change the entire landscape of Penang Island and turn into a New York skyline; and the market reacted even more. He had only Terengganu left, which thankfully was still a Barisan Nasional state. And if he could convince his bankers that Terengganu was still on, then maybe they will ease up on the margin calls.

But it was still too early to pop Champagne. Terengganu may be a Barisan Nasional state but it appears that His Majesty, The Agong, had other plans as to who should be the new Menteri Besar. The Agong knows about the RM1.2 billion a year oil royalty that has now been changed to wang ehsan and which comes under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister’s Department. The Agong also knows that ever since Idris Jusoh was appointed the manager of the wang ehsan in 2000, more than RM8 billion has disappeared into the pockets of Patrick Lim and his retinue of cronies. And The Agong said, enough is enough; the pilferage must come to an end!

Patrick Lim broke out into cold sweat when it was announced that The Agong has his own ideas on who should be the Menteri Besar of Terengganu and that it is not going to be Idris Jusoh. Patrick Lim sent The Agong a SMS with an offer of RM300 million if His Majesty would maintain status quo. The gall of this uncouth, uncultured, crossbreed of a Chinaman. Sending The Agong a SMS is bad enough. Not even The Agong’s uncle would do such a biadap thing. But to attempt to bribe The Agong on top of that is the height of insolence that tantamount to treason.

When The Agong did not respond, Patrick Lim made a beeline for Terengganu in an attempt to have a personal audience with His Majesty to pursue the RM300 million offer. The Agong made Patrick Lim sit in the waiting room the entire afternoon and at 5.00pm His Majesty sent his ‘guest’ off in tears with the message that he is persona non grata in the palace.

Patrick Lim was now desperate. He needed to save his Terengganu operation. With Penang now in shambles, Terengganu is all he has left with which to convince his bankers that he is still bankable. He went to meet Ahmad Said and offered the new Menteri Besar RM40 million if he would agree to turn down the offer for the top post and instead settle for the post of Deputy Menteri Besar. This would allow Idris Jusoh the top post, which would then enable Patrick Lim to retain Terengganu as his playground. But Ahmad Said refused the offer of RM40 million and Patrick Lim’s hope of getting his hands on the RM1.2 billion a year shattered.

Yes, 30 April 2008 may yet become like Saigon of 30 April 1975. Parliament is expected to convene on 28 April 2008 and if Anwar can convince another 30 Parliamentarians from Barisan Nasional to swing to his side then, with the 82 he already controls, he can form the new federal government. But can he do that?

Sabah and Sarawak have 54 Parliament seats, all Barisan Nasional, while only 14 are Umno. Without Sabah and Sarawak, Barisan Nasional will have only 86 Parliament seats in Peninsular Malaysia, a majority of just four seats over the opposition’s 82. And without Sabah and Sarawak, Barisan Nasional cannot form the government, not even with a simple majority.

Sabah and Sarawak know that Barisan Nasional needs their seats. Yet, they gave Sabah and Sarawak just five Deputy Minister posts and ‘worthless’ ministries on top of that. Their 54 Parliament seats are not going to come cheap. They can decide to throw their seats behind the 86 Barisan Nasional seats or behind the 82 opposition seats. Whomsoever gets their 54 seats will form the government. And the one who will get their 54 seats will be the one who comes up with the best offer.

Sabah and Sarawak are each earning about RM600 million a year from the oil royalty. If the 5% oil royalty is increased to 20%, this will be close to RM2.5 billion a year, RM5 billion for both states combined. And if two Deputy Prime Minister posts are created and Second Deputy Prime Minister is rotated between Sabah and Sarawak, then that will complete the package. And the opposition has agreed to grant Sabah and Sarawak all this while Barisan Nasional, over the last two decades, will not even honour the Twenty-Point Agreement that was the basis for the formation of this nation called Malaysia.

Yes, 30 April 2008. Will that be the date of the fall of Barisan Nasional as was the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975? Saigon fell because the government lost touch with the ground. If Barisan Nasional falls it will also be because the government has lost touch with the ground. Umno, today, in its forum at the Singgahsana Hotel, talked about Malay nationalism and Islam. Barisan Nasional got a thrashing on 8 March 2008 because the people are tired of all this talk about Malay nationalism and Islam. And this continued talk about Malay nationalism and Islam will be what will seal the Barisan Nasional coffin for good on 30 April 2008.

For further reading, on 28 March 2008, The Malaysian Insider ran an article called ‘Patrick Lim - jetsetter with a bulls-eye on his back’. Considering that The Malaysian Insider is owned by Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan and Brendon Pereira, it makes one wonder what their game plan is. After all, Kalimullah and Brendon are known fourth floor cronies. Is this a sign that even the fourth floor is jettisoning Patrick Lim and leaving him to flounder in his massive bank debts?

Of special interest is the New Straits Times report below about Maybank buying over Temasek’s interest in an Indonesian bank at RM3 billion more than what they should be paying. The interesting part, of course, is about who brokered this deal with Singapore and why Maybank was made to pay RM3 billion over-value.

Yes, the rats are deserting the sinking ship. And they are cashing out quickly so that they can take with them as much money as they can when they desert the ship. If the ship sinks on 30 April 2008, as may be the case….well, never mind, because by then billions will have been transferred out of the country.

Daim took RM42 billion with him when he bailed out just before Tun Dr Mahathir left the scene. Expect the present figure to be close to that when Abdullah Ahmad Badawi leaves the scene. RM21 billion has already been moved just before the last general election. They only need another RM21 billion to match Daim’s RM42 billion. And the Maybank deal just reduced that RM21 billion to RM18 billion so there is not that far to go. If the new government is formed on 30 April 2008 there may be nothing left in the kitty. I, for one, would not want to be in that new government.

******************************

Patrick Lim - jetsetter with a bulls-eye on his back’
The Malaysian Insider, 28 March 2008

His jet set days seem a lifetime ago. The days of hopping onto a helicopter for a trip to Penang or a quick turnaround to Paris on his private jet. Or a power breakfast with Ferrari's Kimi Raikonnen. Or cocktails with Oracle's Larry Ellison at the America's Cup in Valencia. Those days must seem a long time ago for Datuk Patrick Lim Soo Kit.

Today, he must feel like a man with a bulls-eye on his back. The suave and well-turned out businessman has retreated to the background, hoping that the changing political structure will not leave him on the sidelines as it has many prominent Malaysian corporate figures over the year. Think of Tan Sri Khoo Kay Peng, Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan, Datuk Nazri Abdullah and others who paid for their close association with either Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah or Anwar Ibrahim.

What was once a powerful calling card is now a liability for the man christened Patrick Badawi by his enemies. And make no mistake now that Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's hold on power is tenuous, Patrick Lim's enemies are coming out in droves. Leading the charge is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. In his column in The Sun today, the former prime minister implies that the former Terengganu mentri besar Idris Jusoh and the first family may have benefited from various mega-projects. He does not name the conduit. He does not have to.

It was Dr Mahathir who publicly accused Lim and Khairy Jamaluddin of running Terengganu at the height of his public spat with Abdullah. By referring to him today, Mahathir is merely drawing on a reservoir of disdain, envy and anger against Patrick among Umno members. His critics say that Patrick dropped Abdullah's name at every turn, and that helped propel him into the big league and pages of society magazines. He hit the Malaysian corporate scene in the 1990s when - with the help of some financial backing from his wealthy father-in-law - his company started Equine Park, a housing development in Selangor.

As with many businessmen in Malaysia, he hitched his fortunes to the political master of the day. In the waning days of the Mahathir administration, he hung out with Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir, and they became thick friends. After Abdullah became the PM in October 2003, Lim started getting closer to Kamaluddin, Abdullah's only son. Within a short time, he made himself part of the inner circle, showing up when Abdullah and family members went on holidays. By now, there was speculation that he was a nominee for Kamaluddin. Within some government departments and states, there was little doubt that he had the ear of the PM, or at least he gave the impression he had.

He began to attract disdain and envy after he was selected by Abdullah to develop Pulau Duyong near Kuala Terengganu and organise the Monsoon Cup. In a short time, the Monsoon Cup has become a popular warm-up for teams planning an assault on the America's Cup. In the same time, rumblings started on the ground that Lim and Abdullah's family were the main beneficiaries of the major infrastructure projects in the state. This was one of the sticky points between Idris Jusoh and the royal household in the recent battle over the Mentri Besar's position. Lim was aware of the growing noise and attempted to hush it by pointing out of the many economic benefits which the Monsoon Cup brought to the state.

What he failed to realise was that the criticism had little to do with the race itself but was aimed at its promoter and benefactor in Putrajaya. Within Umno circles, they were peeved that a businessman, not one of their own, could wield so much influence and do it so openly.

If there was any doubt about Lim's close ties with Abdullah it was swept away when the Prime Minister launched the Penang Global City Centre last year. The project – an ambitious plan to turn a tiny neighborhood into a sprawling metropolis – was fast tracked as a high-impact project under the National Implementation Task Force and put under the Northern Corridor. Critics said that the project, to be developed on a 104-ha site now occupied by the Penang Turf Club, will create traffic jams, damage lush green areas and will be unsustainable. The new state government under Lim Guan Eng is not likely to approve the project unless it is scaled down.

Lim knows that his days of being in the frontline are over. He will be collateral damage even if Abdullah survives this choppy period. It is the price that businessmen in Malaysia pay for being associated with certain political leaders. Tan Sri Halim Saad of the Renong Group and Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli were the poster boys of the Mahathir era and paid for the excesses associated with that time.

Only a handful of corporate figures have been able to be close to different political masters. Among them is Berjaya's Vincent Tan. He has remained loyal to Dr Mahathir but managed to win the trust of Abdullah. But the publication of Dr Mahathir's long and piercing attack on Abdullah on the front page of a newspaper closely associated with Tan suggests that he is hedging his bets.

Maybank wins bid for Indonesia's BII
By Adeline Paul Raj
New Straits Times, 27 March 2008

MALAYSIA'S biggest bank, Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), has won a bid to take control of Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) for US$1.5 billion (about RM4.8 billion), a major step for the lender to expand in the region. BII is Indonesia's sixth largest bank in terms of assets, with over 230 branches.

"This acquisition will transform our growth prospects in Indonesia and significantly enhance our regional presence," Maybank acting chief executive officer Datuk Aminuddin Md Desa told reporters at a briefing yesterday in Kuala Lumpur.

To comply with takeover rules, Maybank will also offer to buy the remaining 44 per cent of BII, which could push its total bill to US$2.7 billion (RM8.6 billion). It plans to fund this internally. The deal comes just days after it agreed to buy a 15 per cent stake in Vietnam's An Binh Bank for RM430 million.

Maybank's bid for BII, at 4.6 times book value, appears steep, an indication of the stiff fight from bigger rivals and limited opportunities in the region. Analysts said that it was probably the most expensive bank purchase ever in Indonesia. Research firms like Citigroup had expected it to pay US$1.8 billion (RM5.7 billion) for all of BII.

Aminuddin, however, believes it is worth paying the hefty premium to get a controlling stake in a crucial market like Indonesia. The country has no foreign shareholding limits and offers one of the highest growth potential in the region. "It's an opportunity we couldn't afford to miss," he said.

A Reuters report said Maybank had beaten Bank of China for BII, after Europe's biggest lender, HSBC, dropped out in the last leg of the race. According to Aminuddin, BII will start contributing profits in the third year after the deal is completed. Maybank's strategy is to tap the remittance business and, later, trade finance. With BII, revenue contribution from Maybank's international operations will jump to 30 per cent in the next one or two years from about 19 per cent currently, he said.

In the first stage of the BII deal, which could take three months to complete, Maybank will pay RM4.8 billion to buy all of Sorak Financial Holdings Pte Ltd, which holds 56 per cent of BII. Sorak is owned by Singapore investment arm Temasek (75 per cent) and South Korea's Kookmin Bank (25 per cent). Maybank will then make a RM3.8 billion offer to buy out BII's minority shareholders.

On whether Maybank intends to take BII private, Aminuddin said it was still too early to say as it would depend on how minority shareholders respond to the offer. He pointed out, however, that Indonesian law states that as long as there are at least 3,000 public shareholders, a company can be kept listed no matter what the public shareholding spread is. Maybank, whose shares traded at RM8.95 yesterday before being suspended for the announcement, expects to complete the entire deal in six months. Temasek is selling its stake in BII to comply with Indonesian laws that forbid a foreign investor from owning more than one bank.

PETALING JAYA, 1 April - Seorang Ketua Pemuda UMNO Bahagian di Selangor diheret keluar dewan oleh orang ramai hari ini dalam program Forum UMNO Pasca Pilihan Raya Umum ke-12 berikutan cadangannya supaya bekas Timbalan Presiden UMNO, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim diajak masuk semula ke dalam UMNO.

Aznizam Adham yang bangun berucap dan mendakwa menyampaikan pandangan kalangan pemuda elit terpaksa menerima hakikat bahawa beliau tersalah 'gelanggang' hingga menyatakan cadangan sedemikian.

Patrick Lim is a non-brainer. Look at Gamuda's Lin, he sold all his shares before the GE, even though Gamuda was a blue chip company. He knew the stock market would take a beating after the GE results. Now he can buy the shares back for much less. That's how great minds work!!! Patrick Lim deserves the losses. Only idiots and emperors who didn't know that they had no clothes on could not see the writing on the wall.

maybank deal makes no sense. CIMB and maybank are controlled by the malaysian government. It is against indonesian law for common shareholder to hold huge positions in more than one bank. That was why temasik was forced to sell out in the first place.

Dear RPK,

If and when Parliament convenes on 28th, 29th or 30th April, will Anwar be a sitting MP at that time? He is disqualified from contesting until 14 April or so, and the Elections Commission has 60 days to call a by-election. Our dearest Tan Sri will probably call it at the end of that 60 days, i.e. 30 June 2008. If so, will the BN MPs hop over to Pakatan Rakyat on 30 April when it is not clear who the new PM will be??

I don't think Anwar will allow the D-day to take place on 30 April unless he is an elected MP by then.

Very informative writeup. But the figures are real frightening indeed. Sends chill to my bones all over. What aboslute rot and abuses of the natio's funds. billions we are talking about. And the 300 million and 40 million bribes? All 20 million population in Malaysia played out by a few handful of greedy shits and scums. And our former PM now also shiver with the prospects of Anwar becoming the next PM. We all know the reasons. More shit piling on more shit for the rakyat to digest and vomit. FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL, TIME TO ELIMINATE AND TERMINATE ALL THESE CORRUPT component parties of the Barisa. Foremost, UMNO has to go. The rakyat must now force out this party into the history books. We had UMNO before. We are now actually having UMNO Baru. Get rid of that too. For all we care, whether there is UMNO Tiga is another story. All Malaysians should be shameful of themselves to believe with so much deception coming out from our very own Government for so many decades. Do we ever learn anything?

When a job my company won was unceremoniously taken away from us by Patrick Lim late last year, I had to undergo a humiliating experience where I was told to meet Datuk Patrick Lim to explain our concept for the particular project. Patrick was a no-show, along with Wan Hisham (he lost in the recent electins, yea!).

To my horror, I was put through a 'spanish inquisition' of sorts by the whole team from his T-Best Events company (the same one that did the Monsoon Cup) - and most of them are young, inexperienced persons.

I cooly packed my stuff, stood up and walked off. No way was I going to share what my proposal was all about to Patrick's people, even that it meant I lost a potentially large account.

It is so, so nice to know that Patrick Lim was made to wait to see the Agong and then to be asked to leave. God is great, I thank Him!

Patrick Lim is a slimeball SOB who is so low down that he would have to reach up to scratch the belly of a snake !! Even an animal has principles, so I am not going to insult the Animal Kingdom by equating him to an animal.

This parasite should be exterminated forthwith and I hope it is one of the first things on Pakatan RAKYAT's agenda to do just that !!

I hope PR is ready to take the reins of power for with great power comes great responsibility and I hope PR will do everything in its power to bring to book all these parasitic despots such as Daim, Patrick Lim, Andrew Leong, etc. etc. and annex all their assets both here and overseas and give them back to Malaysia and the RAKYAT who have been robbed so unjustly all these years.

If we could just recover 10% to 20% of the monies stolen, we could weather this coming recession and bring Malaysia out of it stronger and fitter.

I can and will volunteer to help if PR is committed to bringing these bastards to justice and face the music.

Some people only have heard of how ruthless and downright bad Patrick Lim and his goons are, you and I have had the chance to sample their unscrupulous behaviour. I tell you, not only did he become much richer by being the main contractor for the Islamic Civilization Park, he sapu everything to do with the place including the concession shop selling souvenirs - such a drop in the bucket thing also he want. Downright greedy and bad to the core!

Chandra Muzaffar's selective memory

Dear Chandra,
In your letter 'More pro-establishment? Not Quite' to the Sun March 31, 2008, you try to give the impression that you are not pro-BN by giving selected examples of your activities. However you conveniently leave out some damning ones.

Your association with Anwar Ibrahim when he was in the government coincided with a scholarship for your daughter to the University, and also a Professorship for you at the University of Malaya. These events also brought about your resignation from Aliran, a social reform group which you founded in which you were critical of the government.

From thence on, you were so close to the establishment that you even organised a seminar on human rights which you invited the then PM Mahathir Mohamed to open, of all people, prompting Aliran to title an article on this seminar, "The Height of Hypocrisy" in their journal. Clearly it was meant that you were "The Highest Hypocrite".

In the run up to our elections of 2008, you gladly volunteered to utter some disparaging remarks about Anwar Ibrahim hoping both to damage his credibility as well as to please your political masters. Your remarks had no effect on Anwar, but it definitely did damage YOUR credibility, or what's left of it.

Did you think that you can be absolved of your pitiful attempt to put Anwar in the worst light by writing the letter? Or are you now beating your breast in regret for backing the wrong side? You may twist and you may turn, you may flip and you may flop, but you cannot fool the people any more. Perhaps you are not pro-establishment as you claim. You are part of the establishment now.

I would like now to remember some who have served the cause of the people without being hypocrites, and who would be happy at the elections results if they were here today.

IT makes one wonder why UMNO does not get it, they bad performance during the recent GE is because of their arrogance, and also lack of confidence from the citizens of this country.
That shows the kind of leaders that UMNO and BN has.

I beg to differ with RPK's depiction of events of the Vietnam War. In case anyone doesn't remember, it wasn't the irregular fighters of the Vietcong who swept into Saigon in 1975. No, it was the T-55s and the soldiers of the North Vietnamese Army-- a conventional army. The fact of the matter is, the 'Tet Offensive' of 1968 caused massive casualties in the Vietcong and practically eliminated them as an effective fighting force. The end of South Vietnam was wrought not by an insurgency, but by a conventional invasion of the South by the North. The ARVN lacked the firepower (namely American air support) to repel the 1975 NVA invasion as had been done to stop the 1972 NVA invasion. And so, in the end, superior Communist forces overwhelmed their southern brethren.

I agree that it was the RVN government that was out of touch, but they were in deep denial about how badly they were outgunned.

Talking about Vietnam. It was the South's airforce pilot who took a plane and bombed the South's airport before defecting to the North, a contributory factor though. The American's evacuated but left a few to push the South to defend its territory. If that happened, the South would be completely destroyed. But the South's armed forces just stood by and let the North in which saved the day. Also in Cucci area, the people has abandoned the South long time back. They were supporting the North.

If there is truth in it then Patrick Lim and Maybank staff responsible should be held accountable for their audacious acts against the good of the Nation. These are truly scumbags who had tainted the goodwill of Malaysian and alo the "Idiot" should be removed for inactions, whatever.

Pete

You must remember that Malaysia is predominantly muslims. So it is not difficult to convince muslims to reject communism but communism did succeeded making limited inroad to the Malaysian chinese.

Anyway back to Vietnam. The South Vietnamese were too corrupt.Thats why they were in state of denials.Similar situation happened to UMNO..UMNO had reache its expiry date.Nothing could change it... smilies/wink.gif

Anwar may not need to be in a hurry to become the next Prime Minister of Malaysia, since there are some fundamental issues to be ironed out in order for Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Alliance) to be starting off with a firm foundation. Dr. Wan Azizah may become the first lady Prime Minister of Malaysia, setting the paradigm shift predicted by the former Prime Minister of women power. This may be the interim solution to mellow down the egos of the leaders of the component parties of PR. Thereafter Anwar can wait for a by-election, so that he can become a MP and take over from his wife.

30th of April may mark the second Merdeka of Malaysia when the power of the people has been restored, and the leaders are accountable to the people from thereon.

It is the dawn of Malaysian renaissance, and the people have to rise to the occasion and be counted.

We need to recognize in the world of globalisation, we cannot survive on the racial and religious platforms in order to shield off the reality of openness, competitiveness, survival of the fittest, and above all else the need to leverage and co-exist. The leaders who do not realize these realities are now irrelevant to the mainstream and global politics and social and economic development.

It is time for us to relish the power of caring and sharing in the quest for peace, harmony and co-prosperity. It is through collaboration and leveraging that we can gain strength to do things positively to progress. Some of the political leaders of Malaysia were rejected by the people simply because they fail to understand the people’s needs, and were more interested in acquiring personal wealth. There is a very simple saying of “whatever is yours is yours …”, so it is not good trying to manipulate to become transient billionaire. Many leaders in the world fall from power because of corruption, abuse of power and immoral excesses.

Let us hope that PR leaders shy away from the bad deeds of the current and previous leaders who technically plunder the nation’s wealth without feeling ashamed of the wrong doings. Some leaders have perfected the system of corruption thinking that they will never be caught and punished. However, even the legal system cannot get them now, they have to face the consequences of karma.

The foreign investors and leaders are watching the development in Malaysia, and are probably happy to see the maturity of the political system in which a two-thirds majority may be a thing of the past. With the two party system, neither party can misbehave.

(Paraphrased) " When one runs a government or a political organisation, one should do it with the rakyat and Allah in mind, and not about one's family ".

I would like to believe he was talking about rakyat, as in all malaysian, and not just the malays. If not, he's involving Allah, the all loving and just, in an unjust government. Allah forbids.

But, going by the calls of the UMNO leaders - to protect the rights of the malays, their ketuanan and their threatened extinction, I would be badly disappointed.

It's true UMNO and the BN have not gotten the rakyats' message of 8th March, and therefore they will become irrelevant in our present political scenario.

Hmmm....the final straw that broke the camel's back? smilies/cry.gif. It would indeed be interesting to see the outcome soon, however, whats to worry, after all the Mamak Gang (Mahathir and gang) have already squandered most of the resources of Malaysia. Mahathir is now ranting and raving because he wants his son to be the next PM so that Malaysia can be sodomised this time out. Unfortunately we are actually crying over spilt milk.

This would mean, looking at History, we were not only raped by the British but Malaysians ( Mamak, Daim, Patrick Badawi, Khairy, Khir, Mohn with 2 Ms, Samy Vellu and sons and relatives and much more) as well where the resources were concerned.

I sincerely hope that Pakatan Rakyat will not be like Barisan National. But the terms POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY is my greatest fear. The deal here is to ensure that we as the Rakyat keep either party on their toes. at the slightest chance of them sliding back, we should take our whip out and whack them ( not literally of course).

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, which means the true value or quality of Pakatan Rakyat can only be judged when it is put to the test. What Pakatan Rakyat must remember if it comes to power is that:
ALTHOUGH RESULTS MATTERS, BUT IT NOT HOW YOU START BUT HOW YOU FINISH

So when you finish in 4 -5 years time, make sure YOU REMEMBER WHO VOTED YOU..as rpk said..we voted you and we can vote you out. smilies/grin.gif

I believe Anwar will not seek a parliament seat yet. For him to do so the Federal government must be under PR and not BN. He knew it but he is just keeping quiet!
The reason for this is simple. BN still control the police, army, judiciary and the EC. It would be a foolish sacrifice to have one of PKR MP vacating his seat for a by-election. BN with their entire machinery would guarantee their candidate win with a landslide!! Anwar was once in UMNO he should know better that was why he advised PAS not to contest the Batu Talam by-election then.

The best option for Anwar is to wait for the 13th GE to contest. Then it would be impossible to just deny Anwar but end up losing the federal government. We witnessed that when they concentrated on certain areas and end up losing four states plus failing in their bid for Kelantan.

Pak Lah gave M2Taib the job as a "bagman". This is an attempt to hold on to his job by having M2Taib giving out goodies to the grassroot. It is better to have Pak Lah stay on as PM. At least we know him better.

Let the status quo remains. PR must do a good job then and only then can they be given the federal government as well, 4 or 5 years from now. Anwar will just have to be patient and wait until the next GE to achieve his PM ambition.

The deal for the Indonesian bank was negotiated by the former CEO and two other cronies. Nothing was disclosed to the top management team nor the the other Board Members prior to the conclusion of the sale.

There are many interesting articles on the sale by various analyst. But the most important question is that are they paying a premium for not buying a premier Indonesian bank earlier (which means thay were actually sleeping like our PM) or is this a pay off......... for the former CEO.......

Another interesting rumor is that KJ was in Singapore right after the elections to conclude this deal..............

If the incoming CEO Wahid has any credibility, he will STOP THIS DEAL and save the country money.....

If I were Ahmad Said, I would have accepted the offer to enable a transaction to occur. Upon receipt of any monies I would immediately make a report to ACA and using the transaction as evidence. LETTR TO MALAYSIAKINI

Hats off to all those who brought change
Alfred Ho | Apr 2, 08 4:08pm

The people of Malaysia have finally spoken and a quiet revolution of sorts has taken place. I think that the election results would have been even more impressive for the opposition had the Election Commission acted impartially.

However, at least the opposition has now denied the Barisan Nasional government its two-thirds majority in Parliament and that is certainly a good start. I am glad to have been able to play a small part in this quiet revolution by urging Malaysians to bring about change by voting for the opposition.

I equate the election results to ‘People Power’ and with the winds of change. The MIC and Gerakan are now both irrelevant. The MCA and the PPP have also been dealt a heavy blow and I am sure that the leaders of the Barisan Nasional will have to do a lot of soul-searching to do.

Let us hope that the three successful opposition parties can get their act together and rule efficiently the five states that right thinking Malaysians have delivered into their hands and not fail the many citizens who have helped
bring about this change.

As a blind individual myself, I hope that discrimination towards the disabled community will be a thing of the past and that we will be given equal opportunities where jobs are concerned. As a singer, musician myself, I hope to be given opportunities to perform at government and other public functions.

Finally, I wish to thank all those who campaigned tirelessly to bring about this change and these include people such as Raja Petra, the Lim combo, Anwar Ibrahim, Jeff Ooi, the list goes on. I also wish to take this golden opportunity of saying special thanks to the alternative media for giving us a platform to air our views during the run-up to the elections.

Let us hope that the Barisan Rakyat will keep its promises to the people by looking into their interests and that corruption and cronyism will be things of the past. While I am on this subject, it is my sincere hope that all those who have been involved in corruption during the former administration be charged in court and that the full force of the law be brought to bear upon them for their
misdeeds to teach them a lesson that they will not forget in a hurry.

We need to let west malaysians know that after the general election of march 8 the BN government that evolves is a government on "life-support" thanks to east malaysians members of parliament. These 'hungry wolves' know that as long as it's a BN government it has to obtain their support to stay alive or else it would sink within seconds. Hence they are now ever-ready to close in for the kill. All at the expense of west malaysians who since independence have been holding political power and in whose hands lies the destiny and future of Malaysia. But not anymore.
Hence, even BN members of parliament from west malaysia have a sacred duty to defect and cross-over to ANWAR IBRAHIM and Pakatan Rakyat so that political-power will still remain in the hands of West Malaysians. As long as it's a BN government in Putrajaya, west malaysians will forever be held at ransom by the small minority (only 15 per cent of malaysian population) in east malaysia. These east malaysians may demand 70 per cent of development funds be spent in east malaysia and AAB may have to accede or else his government will sink in the deep blue sea.

I totally agree to that..I once applied for the Pegawai Tadbir dan Diplomatik (PTD) position, one of the most respected position in civil service.Got through the exam, then a 3 day orientation and after 2 interviews(each interview was panelled by 3 datoks/tan sri's), I was told that my Degree was not recognized by JPA since it was done in a private college. But the college has LAN approval. And the college runs the twinning programme with the same university in UK that MARA sends their students to.At the end, mine is not recognized but those from MARA are.

This because I was not a Malay.Eventhough I'm a converted Indian Muslim but BN was not bothered.Should have gone and ampu Sheikh Kadiar(even he is not a melayu) for the job.A lot of people told me that I can get land and money if I converted. But I got shit. They didn't even let me serve my country.

But I'm not bothered, I didn't wait for things to be handed out to me.I'm now comfortably working in Singapore with a higher paying salary plus that 2.28 exchange rate.I'm happy.Thank you BN for not giving me that job, else I would have been a corrupt Pegawai in one of their ministry!

I also went back to Kedah to vote BN out this time and am proud of it.I remember during my first PTD interview, one of the interviewer was none other than SPR chairman Tan Sri Rashid. That guy scolded me when I told him I was not a registered voter and asked me to have myself registered in the KOMTAR building after the interview. The interview was in KOMTAR.Eventhough I was smiling and telling him I would register after the interview, I was thinking would it matter. You are the great rigging master and would my vote change anything. That was 4 years ago, I got myself registered in 2007 and I voted for a change.

Raja Petra,
You know why BN is not building more public universities.Because they are scared that more and more non malays would graduate with a JPA recognized degree and would apply for civil service jobs. This would put UMNO's ketuanan melayu in danger.

Business is Business!!!!
On offer for settlement is not a bribe or corruption!!

Who should you look out for!

Corrupt government officials!! They are everywhere, making life miserable for the ordinary people. This goes below the RADAR!!

Why give all the attention to the King and Patrick Lim fiasco!! You and I are not going to benefit!!!!!

If we tackle the erra baru government servant, police force, Majlis Perbandaran officials etc and cleanse them of their corrupt practice, like giving RM10 for signatures. RM2,000 for approvals, RM500 for ?????! Waiving fine because of skin colour!!!

That when if summed up, will come out to be more that RM300 million.

So go back to basics - ground zero and work upwards.

Lies, lies and damn lies!!

Except from Star 5April2008

Karpal: No one party is boss
PETALING JAYA: There is no question of any of the three political parties being the backbone of the proposed Pakatan Rakyat, DAP chairman Karpal Singh said.

He said it had already been made clear that no one party would have greater standing, as the three component parties were equal in the alliance.

“Out of 82 parliamentary seats, PAS won 23 seats, with DAP securing 28 seats and PKR 31.

“PAS won the lowest number of seats, so how can it claim to be the backbone of Pakatan Rakyat?” he asked when contacted yesterday.

He was commenting on an Utusan Malaysia article yesterday where Kelantan PAS Youth chief Mohamad Zaki Ibrahim agreed with Kelantan’s deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakub that PAS ought to be the backbone of Pakatan Rakyat to ensure the hopes of setting up an Islamic country were realised.

This was backed yesterday by the Kedah and Terengganu PAS Youth movements, Bernama reported from Alor Star yesterday.

National PAS Youth vice head Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani, who also heads Terengganu Youth said PAS should be the backbone as the party had been in existence much longer than PKR and DAP and most Malaysians were Muslims.

Karpal Singh added that there was also no question of PAS insisting on an Islamic state, as in reality the country was a secular state as was confirmed by the Supreme Court in a 1988 decision.

PKR information chief Tian Chua said the three parties believed in the power-sharing concept, and therefore it was necessary to work together and treat each other equally.

“We need each other, we cannot fall easily due to provocation. We must be together to ensure unity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karpal also joined calls for former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be prosecuted for alleged interference in the administration of justice.

Gerak, an anti-corruption non-governmental organisation, and former United Nations special rapporteur Datuk Param Cumarasamy had called for Mahathir to be probed on the matter.

“In the trial of PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former ACA director-general Datuk Shafee Yahya had testified in High Court in June 2000 that Dr Mahathir had ordered him to close a file.

If the allegations by Shafee were true, the former Prime Minister should not be above the law, Karpal said

FICTITIOUS LIES & NOT JUST DENIAL

Vietnam war was started and lost not because of mere denial but because of lies invented by the powerful i.e. America.

Before they pulled out of south Vietnam after losing in Dien Bien Phu, the French had agreed with Ho Chi Minh that the country would have free elections for the people to decide on who to represent them in their future self-government.

The Americans sabotaged it by putting in place their own puppet Catholic rulers that did not represent the Vietnamese nor were capable of ruling effectively.

The puppets were made to deny the agreed elections, and were supplied with arms to start a civil war.

The Americans joined in when their puppet ruler proved to be incapable to rule nor fight. And ended up dropping more bombs than that used in the entire World War II and resulting in 6 million Vietnamese casualties versus 60,000 of their own.

Things like saving freedom from the evil of communism were merely convenient lies. The real intent was the control of markets and denial of the same to others.

And is the same everywhere they go, from Panama to Afghanistan to Iraq.

Only fools believe the lies they perpetrate.

----

In Malaysia, UMNO does the same.

To gain control of the right to feed on the wealth of the country, they rely on the lying claim of 'saving' their own race and that of the others by way of supporting a bunch of parties that do not represent their people nor capable of ruling effectively.

Only fools believe the lies they perpetrate.

/// How can Vietnam fall to its own people. C'Mon!....it should be "So Vietnam sustained and Malaya fell to the British." ///

SBennit, it should be "the Communists in Vietnam prevailed, while the Communists in Malaya fell to the British." Vietnam defeated the mighty US, while the British vanquished Malaya. So much for winning all the battles and losing the war.
