KUALA TERENGGANU: Kijal assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said, who was supposed to have been sworn in as Terengganu Mentri Besar Sunday, has been stripped of his Umno membership for disobeying the party's leadership, a state Umno official confirmed.

The office of the Sultan of Terengganu announced Saturday that Ahmad Said would be the new Mentri Besar of Terengganu instead of Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, ending 14 days of uncertainty.

Ahmad Said: Scheduled to be sworn in at 10am today.
The swearing-in ceremony was scheduled to have taken place at Istana Tamu at 10am today but was likely to have been boycotted by 22 state assemblymen who are supporting Idris, the former Mentri Besar. They were planning a protest walk from Seri Iman, the MB’s official residence, to Istana Tamu, about 500m away at 7.30am.

“In accordance with Clause 14 Paragraph (2) (a) of the Terengganu State Constitution (Chapter 2), the Regency Advisory Council, in undertaking the function on behalf of the Regent, hereby appoints Datuk Ahmad Said as the Mentri Besar of Terengganu to head the Terengganu State Executive Council,” said the palace statement released to Bernama at 3.30pm.

It is learnt that 51-year-old Ahmad, a former exco member in the Idris-led state government, had the support of seven of the eight Umno division leaders in the state who lobbied for his appointment at the last moment.

At 3pm Saturday, the state Umno Youth and Wanita wings held emergency meetings and unanimously pledged their support for Idris half an hour later.

All the assemblymen, except for Ahmad, gathered at Idris’ official residence here for a meeting at 5pm.

At 5.45pm, state Umno liaison secretary Datuk Rosol Wahid said the assemblymen who attended the meeting would boycott the swearing-in ceremony if Idris, who is also Terengganu Umno liaison chairman, was not appointed the Mentri Besar.

He said some of the elected representatives concerned were willing to resign if someone else was appointed Mentri Besar.

Rosol, who is the assemblyman for Ajil, also warned that the assemblymen concerned would pass a vote of no confidence at the State Legislative Assembly if Idris was not reappointed Mentri Besar.

Show of support: Terengganu Umno liaison secretary Datuk Rosol Wahid (seated, third from right) with some of the 21 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen at a press conference to register their support for Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh to be retained as Mentri Besar at Seri Iman, Kuala Terengganu, Saturday. They have also threatened to boycott the swearing-in ceremony if Idris was not reappointed. – Bernama
He said the assemblymen concerned had signed a letter stating their support for Idris which would be forwarded to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the Terengganu Regency Advisory Council today.

Asked whether the move could be construed as an act of revolt, he said it was not because Idris had received the letter of appointment as Mentri Besar from the Prime Minister.

“We don’t believe it is an act of revolt because we unanimously represent the people and respect the decision of the (Umno) president. We were elected as the people’s representatives because we were appointed and given the mandate by the (Umno) president,” he said.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in Putrajaya yesterday that Ahmad should obey the Umno president’s directive or face disciplinary action.

He said Ahmad should realise the consequences of his action should he go against the president’s decision.

At 8pm, the 22 assemblymen and Idris held another meeting at a leading hotel here. The outcome of the meeting was not known at press time.

On Friday, the 22 assemblymen sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister to retain Idris as the Mentri Besar after rumours spread that he may be dropped following the purported fallout between Idris and the palace.

State Umno Youth information chief Razali Idris said the wing hoped that there would be no change in the appointment of Mentri Besar.

“We have waited for a long time, 13 days is very long time in politics, Datuk Seri (Idris) has been patient all this while.

“If there are any changes, it should be done at a much earlier stage. Everyone waited for such a long time and we don’t want to hear any upsetting news now,” he said.

The standoff over the Mentri Besar’s post began soon after the last-minute postponement of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for March 10.

Numerous meetings were held between the assemblymen and the Regency Advisory Council and the Prime Minister last week to find a solution to the problem. - STAR

Why UMNO Trengganu backs Idris? Something strange. Has Idris some hidden projects which has not been completed? Or will Patrick will have problem with new BM to expand his projects and distribution of the Petronas royalties?

UMNO can now disrespect the royal consent. The King should strip off the PM and replace with a new PM from anyone elected to the Parliament.

Can the sultan instruct the Election commission to call for fresh elections in Trengganu. This will solve all the uprising challenge to power by UMNO against the palace and the sultan's.

Why is UMNO so arrogant? Are they afraid that somepne will start to dig their files of what they have committed during their tenure of service since 2004?

Ia wujud lama sebelum wujudnya negara Malaysia ini! Sultan beratus ratus kali berhak ke atas negerinya bukan orang luar yang hanya menjajah dan menjarah hasil bumi negeri bertuah ini. Idris claims "we unanimously represent the people" (right - kerbau can also fly over the moon), yet Ahmad "had the support of seven of the eight Umno division leaders in the state who lobbied for his appointment" ...

Now, it remains to be seen if the 7 of the 8 UMNO division leaders previously still support Ahmad, or have changed their minds after recent ACA announcement.

If the 7 changes their minds now, it means UMNO politicians are rotten to the core, and has absolutely NO integrity. If they change their minds, it means they are hooked and blackmailed at the very least, so as to force that change of decision.

Also, why didn't the PM, UMNO Youth Wing, UMNO Wanita listened to the 7 Division Heads earlier? Why issue a contradictory statement AFTER the 7 Division Heads has already indicated their support to Royalty?

A half past six party, totally unworthy of my support!

If the palace-chosen MB is stripped off his UMNO membership, then what is he? To be able to run for election, you need to have a party but if doesn't anymore now, can there not be a by-election?

And those 22 goons who do not want to respect the Sultan's order and therefore will not be sworn in or who wants to resign, their action will mean by-elections, right?

None of us know much about Ahmad Said, the Ruler-appointed MB except for the fact that he's an UMNO member, and that party is now going against him. For what reason, i'm not clear either.

But what we can CLEARLY see now is the arrogance of UMNO; how they are capable to disobeying the wishes of the Supreme Ruler, the Sultan. The UMNO that you see now is a totally new breed of hoodlums who have no respect for anyone as long as they don't get what they want. It's a desruction of the institution that the Malays once revered....50 years ago. The destruction of the moral kind.

I fear the worst for the people of Terengganu if there is a by-election. smilies/sad.gif

EXISTING LAW is SOVEREIGN. The LAW makes a nation CIVILIZED. Remember "The Lord of The Flies"?

Are we a CIVILIZED NATION or not? Who made the law? We did, through our representatives. If we show no respect
for the law, it follows that we show no respect for ourselves! It then follows that we are uncivilized!

In order to avoid being uncivilized, we must look to the law for the solution to this problem. The law and only the law has the answer!

Everything else is secondary.

No, the Supreme power DOES NOT rest with the Sultan. The SUPREME POWER RESTS with the RAKYAT !!! Nobody can act against the WILL of the RAKYAT, not even the Sultan or Agong. Yes, the Royalty are just rubber stamps in a Parliamentary Democracy and for good reason.

We are not a Feudal State ruled by the Majapahit or Cham empire any more !! Malaysia is a Parliamentary Democracy in need of check and balance in the Parliament which we have duly voted in on March 8th (Give yourself a pat on the back !!), and now we need a truly independent Judiciary, and repeal of all the draconian Laws enacted by the Dictator of Malaysia, Mamakthir, forming of a watchdog OMBUDSMAN, and rule of the RAKYAT. The Royalty are here at the RAKYAT's pleasure and will remain so only if they serve the Will of the RAKYAT. Same with the political parties.
