An Open Letter to Chandra Muzaffar.......Mamak oh Mamak....! PDF Print
Saturday, 22 March 2008 10:29

Dear Dr Chandra Muzaffar,

I remember the first time I saw you speaking. I was in my sixth form and you were speaking in a public forum at the Komtar Dome in Penang.

I was in awe of your intellectual courage. You spoke the language of justice and equality in an environment where equality seemed a dirty word.

Fast forward two decades later, reading your analysis on BN's dismal showing at the polls (The Polls - and the BN debacle, The Star, March 17), I must say, I was disappointed.

You seemed to have regressed. And your words belie a lack of understanding and sympathy for fellow Malaysians who long to be counted as equal citizens of this country.

I have no problems when you criticised Anwar Ibrahim although it was clear you took advantage of the platform readily offered to you by the pro-BN media. You are entitled to your opinions and I believed that you had your reasons to warn us against Anwar.

Although your choice of platform dents your integrity, I am all too willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. After all, I too, do not trust Anwar Ibrahim entirely, just as I distrust any DAP, PKR, PAS or BN leaders. I would rather invest my time not in bolstering support for any political parties or leaders, but in strengthening the democratic structures of this country - the media, the judicial system, the electoral process, the right to information. For only these structures can guarantee a nation free from the corruption of power and the tyrannies of all too powerful governments.

Back to your article in The Star, I thought your analysis on the Opposition's sterling performance was myopic. You suggest that the Opposition managed to attract votes because they harnessed ethnic discontentment "to the hilt" - from the Hindraf debacle, the Malay response towards it, to the keris waving incident and the non-Malay reaction against it.

You seem to see everything through a racial lens. And instead of moving beyond it, you are imprisoned by it. Your analysis of why non-Malays voted heavily for the Opposition is one of protest and racial dissatisfaction. But I think you fail to realize that many of us voted for a new politics, one that is non-racial based, non-discriminatory and inclusive.

Referring to Anwar as being a successful personality in harnessing this racial dissatisfaction, you said:

"...whenever a prominent Malay leader articulates non-Malay grievances, the Chinese and Indian anti-establishment vote shoots up significantly. It is as if they are encouraged, even emboldened, by the stance of the Malay leader."

I am one of the many, many who voted for the Opposition and I did so NOT because I am encouraged, even embolddened by a Malay leader. To suggest that is offensive, and it shows your ignorance and condescension to non-Malay voters.

I voted the Opposition because I am sick of BN racialised politics and corruption. I want a party that reflects my vision of a Malaysia for all Malaysians. Not one that tells me that I need an MCA or an MIC to fight for my rights. As a citizen of this country, why aren't my rights already protected? Why do I need a party to fight for my rights based on my ethnicity?

I also do not agree with you assessment that racial discontentment is the reason why voters deserted the BN. Many international media portrayed the elections like this: "Malaysians go to the polls amidst racial tension." That's misleading. This election is not one of interracial discontentment.

Malaysian Malays, Chinese and Indians are NOT fighting among themselves or hating each other. What they are doing is throwing out the old order that divide us and continually tell us that some of us are above others, and others should just be thankful for being allowed to exist on this land.

That is why we see so many first time voters, and non-Malays voting heavily against the BN, but voting not just for the DAP but for PAS and PKR.

In Titiwangsa, a mixed constituency where Dr Lo Lo of PAS was contesting, I saw many lower income Chinese in their 40s and 50s wearing PAS caps and campaigning for the party. At many constituencies where PKR was contesting, I saw Indian youths carrying PKR flags, zig zagging on their motorbikes. At Lembah Pantai, when Raja Petra with Anwar Ibrahim declared that Indians and Chinese would be defended with Malay bodies, the largely Malay audience erupted into cheers. All this clearly shows that many, many of us have transcended the racial allegiance that the BN expects us to hang on to.

I believe we are seeing the dawn of a new nationalism. Malaysians are asking - what does it mean to be a Malaysian. In fact, we are not only asking, we are answering it with our votes. It's a search for a new Identity. We want a Malaysia where all Malaysians are equal.

I think the role of public intellectuals like you should be to articulate that hunger and move the nation away from the harmful ideology and practices that may have served us before, but no longer now.

In doing so, we need to be aware of our language. Quit drawing on that same old racialised language because it won't work anymore. And listen to the youths of today. It is their vision that will make the country
from now on.

This so-called intellectual lynchpin has been compromised by the perks and financial assistance extended to him by AAB/K.J.His food on the table is more important than the principles and values that he purportedly cherished and upheld.

Let's cast him aside and erase our impression about him as an intellectual that he envisioned himself to be.He has become self-delusional.

Chandra is an attention seeker. He supported PKR for pesonal interest, all because the thought that it will propel him when it succeeds but deserted it when all seems failing.

Before the election he turned against Anwar and supported the BN knowing that PKR and BR would reject him. And now trying to make an analysis of the eletion result with intention to blame the raayat and the opposition citing voting on racial lines and blinded by the ills of BN's conducts. This is a true example of the twisting tongue intelect without credibility at all.

I can only say Chandra has lost his integrity.
His willingness to be used by the BN propaganda machine to hit at Anwar is indicative.
His unwillingness to see the real reasons behind the political tsunami shows he's as blind as Ong Ka Ting who says MCA still needs to study the reasons why.

CM is afterall 1/2 bumi.So he certainly will support Bn wit its NEP.

Please do not tarnished RPK's reputation. RPK, like you and me, support the opposite because we wants change (for better for worst its still yet to be seen.) One thing for sure, we are not for the current system.

Although we did not manage to change the government, the current strong opposition will certainly brings about positive changes to the way BN govern as well as gives aus a preview of how the opposite fair in managing the country. (staring from the states first)
So, instead, please forward constructive ideas for the betterment of the nation.

YUP!! SICK AND TIRED!!!

As a leader who dont lead you to a better world, who would follow. As Umnos and BNs are leading us to hell~!

We have already sick and tired of all the BNs (leading by UMNO) doing. When other nation used 5 years to make a step forward, we Malaysia need 15 years with our OLD governmency. So in long terms, we are the one who are left behind.

But our OLD leaders are still feeling they are in a glory path~!! thats what hurts the most. How can someone who dont know how to see the future, be able to rule for so long??

We have had it, We want a change in Malaysia. We want to move forward. And we have alot of catching up to do. Dont block our ways, BNs~!! Don't slow US (Malaysian) Down!!

A good example of the intellectual trap.
Chandra is caught in this trap. What happens is that when one is smart or a learned person or a PHD holder and is well received by the public tends to think that whatever he says is intellectually correct even if he talks about subjects beyond his capacity.

In other words he should remain silent on the issues not well versed. But how to stop the intellectual momentum? The above article is one, I guess.

I am proud to say that I voted for this man to be out for good.

I am keeping the video of the keris man and his racial speech forever for generations to see.

With their recent analysis and predictions as political scientists, Chandra, Tricia Yeoh and Karim Raslan have revealed themselves to be biased intellectual dwarfs who are totally out of touch with the ground. They are just there for the money and the soap box. They need the job badly.

I'm sure they will be boo-ed and hooted off the stage in shame at their next seminar. Lets ignore them.

Chandra Muzaffar, you have allowed yourself to fall from high respectability to one that is, as one famous Chineses saying goes: "A rat that cross the street which everyone want to whack".

It is tragic that after your years of hardwork building up your reputation and respectibility, in your sun-set years, you chose this path of ignominy to side and to defend the undefendably corrupt, feudal, incompetent, immoral UMNO crooks and thieves !!

In the new Malaysia that is dawning, there will be no more rat holes for thieves and rats to hide!!

Well, first of all, I will like to thank for CM (Chandra Muzaffar) personal view about PKR leader. However, as we are the voters and citizen in our country Malaysia, I will like to urged that, we will only votes for the leader who can lead us for better life and free from Corruptions and Fair policy in our country,well......if PKR, PAS, DAP or even BN does not preforms as they promise, as Rakyat will tell them get out...... we should more focus on the development on our country rather than personal attack on the parties Leader. Any where, CM (Chandra Muzaffar) he is too pro-BN, and please do not send your personal view as a whole of Malaysia Nations, because we are only bias to our future rather than parties individual. As we can pay 50year to BN for half-past-six performance why no we expecting more from what we elected now.

Alway remember, listen to People voice.. not your Pro-(Parties) voice.

A real shame. An interlect that somehow or rather is spoiled by his personal agenda..whatever it is only he would know.
I watched CNA.. Channel News Asia and he was invited as some who is able to give views on Malaysian Politics and he was giving biased views - pro BN and strongly anti Anwar. As a guest to the news program and as a respected "specialist" he should have adopted a nuetral view and give pro and cons on both sides. As it is, the opposition did very much better then his doomsday comments for Anwar, PKR Pas and DAP and the Malaysians proved him wrong and his so called analysis are all wrong and irrelevant. I doubt CNA will ever use him again to be their guest. It was actually shown on TV that CNA was not happy with his views from the program which gradually gave him less prominence in the show and prefer to take the views of the other guest.

Chandra oh! Chandra, I suppose you should do some soul searching. As an interlect your personal views should not cloud your professional views. Many of your fans are now disgusted with your pro BN and pro Islam......

Dear Mr. Chandracula, you are a disgrace to your own race, from being an intelligent human-being, you have transformed yourself into a demon. You have completely lost your self-respect by attacking your former collegue. A normal person with good culture will not do such thing. So it shows how low you are. This is a classic example of shame, contrary to the barking by kris-boy, who said that it is a shame to defect. If you choose to be stubborn and do not change for the better, let me remind you that your remaining days will be full of guilt feelings.

I think it is irrelevant if Chandra Muzzafar is a Malay or Mamak or whatever but just to put the record straight. He is an Indian who converted to Islam and that does not make him a Malay or Mamak.Incidentally neither is his wife a Malay. She has a name that sounds Indian Muslim.I wonder if the have any children and if they do ,are he children classified as Malays. If they are classified as Malays then it all fits in well with the character of this political turncoat.Like most Indian Muslims in this country masquerading as Malays, the is proabably laughing all the way to the bank too.As far I see it ,the only people who have benefitted from the NEP are the Indian Muslims who have sold their souls to be called Malays purely for economic gains. What a twisted country we live in!
