KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- Serian Member of Parliament Richard Riot is still with the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) despite intense speculation that he has left the party due to dissatisfaction for not being appointed to the federal Cabinet, it was disclosed.

SUPP president Tan Sri Dr George Chan said the party had not received any resignation letter from Richard, a Bidayuh and five-term MP for Serian.

"The party secretary-general and I have not received anything yet. I don't think it (rumour) is true. I have tried to contact him but to no avail," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Dr Chan admitted that Richard was a bit "upset" after he was not appointed to the federal Cabinet and he told him (Richard) to be patient as the party was trying to work out a solution for him.

"There is rumour saying that he wanted to join the opposition but up to now, we still cannot get in touch with him. I have asked YB Ranum (Mina)and YB Francis (Harden) to look for him as he could not be contacted," he said. Chan said he had recommended Richard's name together with party organising secretary Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui and the two vice-presidents (Datuk Robert Lau and Datuk Yong Khoon Seng) for federal Cabinet positions.

However, only three of the four were allocated posts -- Chin (Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister), Lau (Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister) and Yong (Deputy Works Minister).

"When I submitted the names, I had hoped that every one of them would get, including Richard, whom I recommended for a parliamentary secretary's post.

However, since the prime minister (Datuk Seri Abdull ah Ahmad Badawi) decided to do away with the post, Richard was not in the list," said Dr Chan, adding that he still hoped that Abdullah would consider Richard for another post.

"At the moment, I just hope that he stays cool and let us work it out." Richard first stood for the Serian seat, a predominantly Bidayuh constituency, as an independent candidate in 1990 and later joined SUPP.

In the recently concluded general election, he defended the seat for the fifth term by defeating SNAP candidate Sylvester Belayong Jayang with a majority of 13,427 votes.

SUPP contested seven parliamentary seats and lost only one (Bandar Kuching) to the DAP. If Richard's resignation turns out to be true, the party stands to lose one more seat.

Just like the PKR candidate who did a disappearing act, you just can't reach such ppl when they turn against the party, for whatever reason. Cellphone will be switched off, house phone unanswered, and perhaps they are having a friendly chat with your arch-rival. Then tomorrow they will surface in a press conference with the defection confirmed.

So SUPP, you ppl have already lost him la! Why give such comments like he's still in your party. Are you ppl saying Malaysiakini bullshitting?

Malaysiakini reports..
MP Serian keluar BN, sertai PKR?
Tony Thien | Mar 20, 08 5:18pm

"Ahli parlimen Serian, Richard Riot telah keluar dari Supp - parti komponen Barisan Nasional (BN) - bersama ramai ahli parti itu dari kawasannya..."

....ramai ahli Supp di Serian, sebahagian besarnya suku kaum Bidayuh, telah memulangkan kad keahlian mereka dan menghantarnya dalam sebuah beg kepada presiden parti bersama dengan surat keluar parti.

Yap.. the beginning of the end for BN.

Anybody wants to follow suit?

Are we seeing the beginning of an exodus of BN members to the opposition side? I believe we are seeing the after effect of the great tsunami from the 8th.

Traditionally, Sarawakians do not bother much about parliamentary election, and prefer to vote for the opposition parties. They are more serious about state election. So do not be surprised to see many more joining Richard Riot.

Richard Riot resigned bcos he was not given a cabinet post...well, this shows how selfish and greedy this guy is...and has same quality as Anifah Aman. These guys are now showing their true colours and they think that they are great and indispensable. The ONLY Loser I admire is Dr Koh Tsu Koon, showed his gentlemanship, ensured a smooth transition and pledged Federal not to stop Federal-funded projects. I'm not sure whether it is worth to have people like Richard and Anifah around in our govt. Blessing in disguise!

Gerald, there is a lot of facts missing here on Richard Riot. Another possible scenario is that Riot might have been promised a federal position before the elections and then he didn't get it. Would you call that greed or that he's getting the bad end of the deal? If you were promised a promotion by your boss for fulfiling a certain task and when it is done you are not given the promotion, how would you react?

It's easy to see greed but really I do not know the whole picture and can only speculate. As for evidence one way or the other, it's hard to find any which can't be discredited. Check out Mahathir's 'gentleman's agreement' with AAB. So, I wait and see.

Gerard, I think you do not know the man. Maybe you can take back your comment.

Richard represents the Bidayuh, who was represented in KL by Dr Tiki, but that doctor, being the sole represenative of Bidayuh in KL was dropped by AAB. You see the main reason is NOT for personal glory, but the practice of politics by Dr George Chan, Taib and AAB. Badayuh had been loyal to the Federal Gov't since independence and had always been represented in KL - until now. The community is protesting and that cannot be ignored, much like the MIC having ignored the Indians in the West here.

Gerald, why should he be given a federal post? Hasn't it occured to you that the bulk of BN's seats are from East Malaysia? Why shouldn't they get an increased representation in Parliament? Yet again nepotism and cronyism has reared its ugly head. This is the beginning of the end for SUPP and Taib Mahmud.
