Kota Kinabalu: CM Datuk Seri Musa is confident that none of the Sabah Members of Parliament (MPs) will want to defect to the opposition.
"We cannot stop them (opposition) from talking (to the BN MPs) but we believe that the BN elected representatives are loyal and there is no need for them to join the opposition," Musa, who is also Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said Wednesday. During his Press conference after chairing the first meeting of the new State Cabinet, Musa was asked to comment on reports that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had held talks with a number of BN lawmakers said to be interested in defecting. In the same report, Anwar had also confirmed he was canvassing support from BN lawmakers in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) which represents a power bloc that could unseat the Government if it changed hands. Towards this, Musa was also asked if it was necessary for an Anti-Hopping law to be enacted to prevent elected representatives from leaving their respective parties to join another party. "I believe they are credible and responsible people who have been chosen as wakil rakyat through the BN. So, I believe they will continue to defend this," said Musa. Earlier, on behalf of the State government and people of Sabah, the Chief Minister welcomed the new Federal Cabinet line-up as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Tuesday. He said the line-up reflected a continuity of the power sharing concept and consensus spirit practice by the component parties, which has been a traditional practice of the BN. In this respect, Musa said the State Government and people of Sabah registered their highest appreciation to the Prime Minister for trusting leaders from Sabah as part of his Cabinet members. The new Federal Cabinet that was sworn in Wednesday saw increased representations from Sabah with three full ministers and four deputy ministers. "In this context, we are confident the new Federal Cabinet is capable of fulfilling the mandate given by the people towards successful implementation of the national policies and development agendas," he said. Musa said the time for politicking was over and it was now time for them work and keep their promises as well as double efforts to further strengthen the people's confidence on the Government. He said the State Government would continue to work closely with the Federal leadership and Cabinet to bring development to the country, State and people. ON Datuk Anifah Aman's unprecedented decision to turn down the appointment as a Deputy Minister, Musa said his brother had informed him of his decision that he wanted to give way to others because he had already served for two terms. As for a Sabah BN component party, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) not being represented in the Federal cabinet, he said there were also other parties that were in a similar situation. However, he hoped that SAPP would have its representative (in the Federal cabinet) in the future. "I believe Federal Ministers not only those from Sabah will be assisting us at the State level just like before," Musa added. Asked to comment on the resignation of Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad as Umno Sec-Gen and Barisan Nasional, he said looking back on the history of Umno it was a normal thing for the sec-gen of the party to keep on changing. - DAILY EXPRESS
