Wanita Umno, Sabah warlords signal unhappiness and Anwar claims dozen BN MPs ready to defect

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 – Wanita Umno is restless. Some Sabah component parties are unhappy. And Anwar Ibrahim believes that he can persuade at least 12 Barisan Nasional MPs to change colours, narrowing the gap between between the government and Opposition to 18 seats.

These are some of the rumblings on the ground since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced his Cabinet line-up yesterday.

There has been generous praise for some of his choices, notably the selection of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim as de facto Law Minister, Datuk Shahrir Samad as Domestic and Consumer Affairs Minister and Datuk Amirsham Aziz as the Economic Planning Unit Minister, as well as grudging respect for his decision to drop veterans Rafidah Aziz and Tengku Adnan Mansor.

But below the surface, some segments of Umno and BN are seething.

Supporters of Rafidah Aziz in Wanita Umno made threatening noises yesterday, demanding to know why the leader of their wing had been asked to give up her International Trade and Industry portfolio. They were peeved at the perceived snub towards the contribution of Wanita Umno, noting that only one ministerial position was given to their candidate (Datuk Azalina Othman Said).

The mercury level dropped a notch or two only when news filtered out of Putrajaya that Wanita Umno number 2 Datuk Shahrizat Jalil had been made special advisor to the PM on Women’s Affairs and Community Development. Still the festering problem between Wanita Umno and the PM is not over yet.

Rafidah is expected to wash some dirty linen at a press conference today, where she could make public her analysis on why BN lost so many seats to the Opposition. In the past, the combative politician has blamed Abdullah for listening to his advisers. Umno officials say that they expect the noise from Rafidah’s camp to become lower after a few days. After that, she could join forces with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and other critics of Abdullah.

Abdullah is set to meet senior members of the women’s wing this evening to try and head off a political storm he can do without.

Another problem is brewing in Sabah, the state that delivered big for BN in the elections. The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) leaders are wondering why their winning candidates in the polls were not given positions in the Cabinet when other lesser Sabah parties such as Liberal Democratic Party and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah obtained a deputy minister-ship each.

In Election 2008, SAPP won two parliamentary seats, PBRS (one) and the LDP (one). Officials of the SAPP are expected to air their unhappiness today. There has also been unhappiness by some Umno warlords over the division of Cabinet positions. The prevailing sentiment is that Umno’s superb performance in Sabah should have been recognised with one or two more ministers’ posts.

There are three Sabah ministers in the Cabinet – Tan Sri Bernard Dompok (PM’s Department), Datuk Shafie Apdal (Culture, Heritage) and Datuk Maximus Ongkili (Science, Technology and Innovation). Datuk Anifah Aman who was given the deputy Transport Minister’s portfolio felt that he should have been made a full minister.

He and Tengku Azlan Abu Bakar (Deputy Foreign Minister) made unsuccessful representations to Abdullah yesterday.

The million-ringgit question is whether the bubbling unhappiness among some component parties and individuals in BN would persuade them to join the Anwar Ibrahim bandwagon. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has claimed that many lawmakers BN want to defect to his camp after their election debacle.

Anwar has said that he was approached by many MPs but has ruled out using money to luring them across the Parliament floor.

Buying political support, especially by paying voters money, is common in Malaysia, and bribing lawmakers to defect, while not widespread, is known to occur.

The 3-party opposition alliance put together by Anwar won an unprecedented 82 seats in the 222-member Parliament in the election. It needs 30 more MPs to get a majority needed to unseat Abdullah’s government.

Umno sources say that they doubt that Anwar can snare 30 members, believing that he would be able to get as many as 12 or 15 defections. But that calculation could be as out of whack as their predictions for the general elections, where they were confident that only 55 parliamentary seats would fall to the Opposition.

Unless Abdullah can quell the rumblings on the ground over the Cabinet appointments and the division of the spoils of victory, Anwar could be looking at rich pickings. – THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER

Well, the latest news is that Tengku Adnan Mansor will be replacing Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad as Setiausaha Agung Umno. So this gangster Tengku is still in.

This is really a 'messed up' cabinet.

Appointment of Shahrizat will be A BIG SLAP at Ng Yen Yen's face. Looks like the dissatisfaction in Wanita UMNO is being cool off at the expense of the crippled MCA. MCA, forever UMNO lapdogs.

When he had the strongest mandate after the 2004 elections he squandered it by holidaying and not strengthening his own position by cleaning the house. Now that he is at his weakest, he wants to tunjuk - or maybe fighting for survival. He is a goner.

Whoever want to defect to Anwar's camp must do so in good faith. Always work for the rakyat, not yourself. Don't bring the bad characters/practise/motivation from BN into BR. The rakyat will not tolerate such attitudes anymore.

You may succeed in your cross-over, but may not survive the next election if your performance is below par. The rakyat are now watching the performance of every politician, so better behave yourself.

The end is nigh ... whether Bodohwi cleans up the BN or not, the BN is set to implode on itself!! It is really a situation where BN is damned if it does, and damned if it doesn't !!!

Time to detonate BN before it splatters all over Malaysia - whew!! What a mess that would be!! Alam Flora would need a decade to

I won't support any BN MPs to join PKR/DAP/PAS. I prefer they resign and go to the poll and let their constituents decide.

I don't trust such MPs. They'll ask for gula gula. Never trust MPs from Sabah especially Umno. 95 percent of them have the habit of hopping, faster than grasshoppers.

Sorry Anwar, I won't support you on this. This is the same tactic Umno, yes you while you are DPM, use to bring down the Parti Bersatu Sabah govt in the 1990s.

Ask those who want to jump party to stand for reelection. Period.

It is not the rumblings that Pak Lah should worry about. They are just a precursor to something more serious - an earthquake that may bring BN down like a house of cards in a typhoon.

On another note, I do not think it advisable to accept MPs from BN. It is poor judgment to change horses midstream or to jump ship because the grass is greener on the other side. It smacks of selfishness and a lack of scruples on the part of the MPs concerned. What's to stop them from abandoning BR if it suits their objective. If they wish to cross over, they should give up their seats and campaign for BR in a by-election. That will definitely show good faith.

Pak Lah is not smart leader and he is weak even in UMNO.His cabinet ministers are picked at random without much deliberation.Jokers like Nazri and Muhamadx2 are among the ministers.Malaysia boleh !

Hopefully Anwar could get another 30 MP from East Malaysia to cross over let sink Barisan once and for all.I'm confident BN can be an effective opposition party since they know all the tricks of corruption.

I am not comfortable with the idea of the MPs defecting from UMNO and other BN parties. They are the viruses in the body and if these viruses are allowed to come into another clean body , it will pass its virus around....Anwar of course is not naive to allow them in simply...so what has he got under his sleeves....will his ambition to be the PM over take the interest to protect of the people of Malaysia . I am very very concerned .

I have worked long enough in Sabah to know that the politicians have no principles, and I stand by my statement. The locals always say about their politicians, they hop around like "kataks", for the right price, of course. I agree that Anwar should be wary of Sabah politicians and not be too happy at their offer.

If they intend to join BR without any conditions(and price), maybe Anwar can think about it, but don't jump at their offer immediately.

well ABB has wars on many many fronts.

He has wars within from Razaleigh, from Najib, from Mahathir, from Wanitar, from potential defectors, and many more hands under the table. If they unite together he is gone.

He has wars outside UMNO with his BN Alliance all but mortally wounded. I do not see neither MCA nor MIC surviving and being a viable component party. Without them, BN is dead. Can OMNO survive alone? I doubt it. He cannot win this by appointing crooks and liars to his team. The people will not accept this anymore. His appointment of the man with 3M's to his name as chief of Selangor will accelerate his downfall.

The most important of all he has the public to attend to. The Corruption, the socio-economic problems, problems of race and religion, the Judiciary, The Police and ACA and the AG's Office, The Constitution, restoration of confidence so he can have some legitimacy to rule which he doesn't have now.

I can only predict his demise.

Except for the Anwar factor, I don't think the other factors are a threat except if a bunch of them come together with Anwar. I seriously doubt it. No something else need to happen. Badawi has time but he has no plan and that is a recipe for disaster. The more he delay, the more he is likely to play into Anwar's hand.

Badawi predicting he will not be topple is like him saying Anwar is not a factor in the election.
