Malaysia's Anwar accuses govt of stoking racial tension PDF Print
Sunday, 16 March 2008 21:17

Malaysia's opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim has accused ruling party leaders of stoking racial tensions over plans to dismantle discrimination policies favouring ethnic Muslim Malays.

Anwar's Keadilan party is a member of a three-party opposition alliance which made major gains in March 8 elections, seizing control of four states and more than a third of parliamentary seats.

The alliance's plans to transform the New Economic Policy (NEP), introduced in 1971 to boost majority Malays, has drawn criticism from the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) which led a protest in northern Penang state.

Anwar said the opposition wanted to reform the NEP so that it uplifted all poor Malaysians, no matter what their race, and accused elements in UMNO of inciting fear among Malays over the plan.

"I am... deeply concerned with the attempt being made by certain elements to stoke the flames of racial hatred" in the aftermath of the elections, Anwar said in a statement late Saturday.

"This vicious campaign is being orchestrated by a small number of very wealthy Malays and UMNO leaders who are themselves guilty of squandering and abusing the NEP."

At least 1,000 people led by UMNO figures defied a police ban to gather outside the office of the newly appointed chief minister of Penang on Friday.

Malaysia's population is dominated by Muslim Malays and Penang is the only state with a majority of ethnic Chinese. It voted in a new government led by the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party (DAP).

All three opposition parties have endorsed the NEP reform plan, including the conservative Islamic party PAS, saying it fosters cronyism and corruption and has neglected impoverished Malays in rural areas.

The policy, which gives advantages in education, housing and business, has been criticised as outdated, and benefiting mostly an elite group of Malay entrepreneurs who enjoy preferences in government contracts.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last week cautioned the opposition to tread carefully, warning of "dire consequences" if it targeted Malay rights.

"They must be responsible when making comments. Don't make comments just to be popular with a certain race," he told state Bernama news agency in a television interview late Friday.

Race relations are a sensitive issue in Malaysia, where the spectre of racial violence in 1969 continues to dominate politics.

Ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities led the charge away from the UMNO-headed coalition in the elections, but it also lost significant support from Malays. - AFP/ac

It's time for DAP/PAS/PKR to engage professional lawyers to advise them on the next course of action whenever BN mentioned incorrect facts about them and whenever The Star, NST, Utusan, etc purposely misquote them.

Only then, will they be more cautious on what they say and print.

Do it fast coz' a lot of worried people could be easily influenced.

I kinda agree with Benny that BR should engage a lawyer to help in case the BN causes trouble. I feel that since the results of the GE2008, there have been endless accusations that BR is not being fair. There have also been various threats and warnings to BR even before the govt is properly formed. UMNO-BN is seriously unprofessional and immature judging by their comments which I feel are partly racist and skewed for their own benefit only. It is this group of people who create havoc by conducting demonstrations without giving a chance to the new govt to prove their capabilities. It is this group of pro-BN followers that WILL cause racial tension if they keep doing what they have been doing.

If the UMNO-BN spoilt brats truly love Malaysia, I'd advise them to refrain from making injurious remarks about BR and let them do their job.

Dear underpriveledged Malays. Take a trip to your favourite Menteri Besar's House. Take a good look at his interior decoration. The gold-gilded furniture and all. Also glance at his crystal ornaments. Listen to them boast of where they bought it, and on which foreign trip and all. The truth is, none of these decorations are cheap (Remember the painting in MAS? ). In fact, just his/ her interior decoration alone is enough to pay for your childrens' education. In fact, it should be enough to pay for the entire neighbourhood kids. Yet, his kids got scholarships for overeas studies. You wanna get "glass-eyed" over your "Peruntukan Melayu"? Now's the correct time and place. Make your next protest in front of your previous Minister's house. Perhaps you wanna piss into his swimming pool as well while you're there too.

Dear Malaysian Police, Yes, you with your RM690 salary. Your peruntukan has also gone there. Your boses have taken your money and splurged it on frivolious items. And your poor wife has to go sell curry puffs by the roadside just to make ends meet. You should go and arrest your Ministers immediately. Excercise your duty now. Go ahead. Arrest your Ministers now.

Yes, that's where all your money went to. In fact, it all ended up there for the past 50 years. Now, I have only been talking about your menteri's interior decoration. Wait till the corruption charges take effect. Then you you can publically see that the NEP has been used and abused to siphon YOUR MELAYU into their bank accounts, and those of their cronies.

I have no problems with the NEP at all, on the condition you remove the word "race/ bangsa" from it. Then, it serves all underpriveledged Malaysians equally and fairly.

Truly Asia, Truly Corrupt, Truly go to Jail now

It is becoming crystal clear at last to all the RAKYAT, and indeed to all the world, that it is the Barisan Najis and the UMNOputras who are stoking racial tensions and playing divisive racial politics since Abdul Razak's time as the PM until now !!!

These hypocrites who sing the opposite tune accusing the PKR, PAS, DAP of racial politics are showing their true colours now.

Lawyers, are needed, and also PR experts, to make it clear not only to the RAKYAT, what the BARISAN RAKYAT stands for and how rotten and politically bankrupt the BN actually is, but also to the international community and the international news community. Let's give them hell!!
