KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's weak opposition was up against a hostile mainstream media and restrictive campaign rules, but it can chalk up much of its stunning success in Saturday's election to the power of cyberspace.

Voters exasperated with the unvarnished support of the mainstream media for the ruling National Front furiously clicked on YouTube and posted comments with popular bloggers about tales of sex, lies and videotapes in the run-up to Saturday's election.

Jeff Ooi, a 52-year-old former advertising copywriter who made his name writing a political blog, "Screenshots" (www.jeffooi.com) won a seat in northern Penang state for the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Elizabeth Wong, a human rights activist and political consultant who runs a blog (http://elizabethwong.wordpress.com), won a state assembly seat in the central state of Selangor.

YouTube, the phenomenally popular video Web site, did as much damage as any opposition figure could hope to inflict, after netizens uploaded embarrassing videos of their politicians in action on hot-button issues.

One YouTube video in January showed ruling party MP Badruddin bin Amiruldin causing a ruckus in parliament over whether Malaysia was an Islamic state. "Malaysia is an Islamic state," he declared. "You don't like it, you get out of Malaysia!"

Muslim Malays form the majority in multi-racial Malaysia, but ethnic Chinese and Indians account for a third of the population and they deserted the ruling National Front in droves, partly in outrage over the religious debate.

SEX, SLEAZE, CORRUPTION

Another YouTube video that got wide distribution shows a rambling and incoherent Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin, in a live interview with al-Jazeera, excitedly defending a police crackdown against peaceful protesters calling for changes to the electoral process in November.

Zainuddin was one of several "big guns" in the National Front that fell to the opposition's onslaught.

Sex, sleaze and corruption were election issues and they all had video soap operas on Web sites.

Malaysia's health minister resigned in January after admitting he and a female friend were the couple in a secretly filmed sex video uploaded on YouTube. That cost some votes.

"We were concerned about the morality of our leaders," said Maisarah Zainal, a 26-year-old teacher in Kuala Lumpur. "It didn't help that Chua Soi Lek was involved in a sex video."

Loh Gwo Burne, who secretly videotaped a phone conversation, allegedly showing a high-profile lawyer trying to fix judicial appointments with Malaysia's former chief judge, was elected to a seat in parliament from a seat in suburban Kuala Lumpur.

The grainy video hit a nerve in Malaysia, whose judiciary has been under question since the late 1980s.

Malaysia's blogging community offer alternative views in a country where the government keeps a tight control on mainstream media. The government said last year it might compel bloggers to register with the authorities to curb the spread of malicious content on the Internet.

Government backers doubt whether bloggers turned opposition politicians could make their presence felt. "Beyond the major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, there's not much the bloggers can really hope to accomplish," says Mohamad Norza Zakaria, a leader in Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's UMNO party ( www.umno-online.com )

The Chinese-backed DAP, by contrast, appointed blogger Ooi to head the party's "e-campaign."

Even a barely literate 89-year-old grandmother running for parliament with little money and only a bicycle to get around on, hopped the cyberspace bandwagon with a Facebook profile and her own blog, courtesy of some Internet savvy supporters. Mamin Yusuf, however, lost. It wasn't clear how many of her potential voters were hooked up to the Internet in northeastern Terengganu.

RAJA PETRA KAMARUDIN was the hammer that breaks the Berlin Wall in MAlaysia. For 50 years, the BN governemnt has this wall that completely seal the minds and eyes of Malaysians. Now, with wall broken down, Malaysians have regained dignity and freedom.

Yes, indeed the writer probably do not know of the immense influence of RPK's blog. But I agree that it is without any doubt the power of cyberspace played its part in the BN losing its 2/3 majority.

There is no doubt that the internet showed its power in getting the message to more people than ever. And I pay homage to all our brave bloggers. Maybe now the main stream media will recognize how futile it is not to be independent.

But the Opposition didn't win these many seats. The Ruling Party lost this by themselves. They lost when the greed and corruption became so rampant aided by an inept PM who not only appear to dig his hands into the till but allowed his Party members to loot without regard to loud protests. His permissiveness ran contrary to public expectations and standards. It was sickening. Meanwhile the show of total defiance was obscene with illegal palaces, illicit sex, fixing of judges, destruction of religious sites, manipulation & profiting from special permits, huge sums of money hidden away in foreign land, huge kick-backs,indiscriminate cronyism, even a highly suspicious and highly publicized murder - the absolute contempt for the people are all tell-tale signs of the decay in the Party. The number and extent of abuses became just too much but these silly buggers in power couldn't see it as they ravage their greed and became drunk in their power.

I saw them sinking in the stench of the shit they created and knew that it could lead to their own destruction. All empires are self-destroyed. This is the beginning of their end (I hope). I repeat - beginning. There is more to come. Like any good surgeon, when you go in to carve out the diseased tumor, you go in deeper than needed so that the cancer is truly eliminated. We need to ensure we do not allow this cancer to threaten us again.
For the nation to properly heal, these ugly perpetrators & pariahs should ALL be brought to trial in front of a truly independent, incorruptible judiciary.
This will show and teach our children the standards of ethics we will always abide by and hold ourselves to. We will not be tarnished by them.

Let us not throw away this opportunity to make ourselves a nation of people that we can hold up to anyone in the world. Malaysia Boleh!(you bet)

I would credit M-T as the single most infuential blog to have caused "havoc" in toppling BN from its perch in the 4 states to have come under opposition control after more than 40 years.

Bill, I think you overrated the Internet.
Had BN never controlled the media ie print, TV, radio etc the way they did, the Net can only hope to play a complementary role at best. As a man in the street, I feel nothing can beat the MOUTHS …
I also feel BN’s fall is directly due to the True Boss the land (its citizens) who finally gathered enough steam to send out a loud and clear message that WE WANT CHANGE & WE MEAN BUSINESS!

BTW, the Boss has unofficially declared March 8th as a public holiday … The Tsunami Day! Have fun …

Now, UMNO cannot come into the parliament to say they want to do this and do thta. They have to get the 2/3 approval from Parliamanet to do that. Think that would be easy? The annual Budget will need the 2/3 approval. Think that will be easy?

None of us should ever, ever underestimate the power and influence of popular blogs like MT in assisting the rakyat to hand the BN a handsome thrashing! RPK....de facto king of Malaysian blogs....his blog campaign, as well as campaign on the ground opened the eyes of us all. Now as the GE2008 results sink in, the BN spin doctors can see the backfires resulting from their gutless lying and "pulling wool over the rakyat's eyes". During the campaign period more than 20 pages a day in The Star and NST were devoted to stories, reports and analyses by these fools...did anyone read them? If they did, then did they believe what was written. The cyberspace campaigners had their ears close to the ground and told the story EXACTLY as it was. KJ and the 4th floor boys...what a slap to your bloody faces! Samy Vellu....demi-god glorified by his own newspapers....send an army to Sg. Siput and I'll still win...what happened Samy? The "army" of netizens and the ordinary rakyat worked together to throw you out. What will your newspapers say today? Sothinathan....'Telok Kemang seat is safe in the bag'...maybe you didn't mean YOUR bag...hah hah hah!

Let's all not become complacent. We must continue to expose the scams and scandals espoused and condoned by the BN and keep the newly elected DAP, PKR and PAS YBs on their toes. REMEMBER...WE'RE WATCHING.
