RAWALPINDI, Pakistan — Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.

"The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred," Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan said.

A party security adviser said Bhutto was shot in neck and chest as she got into her vehicle to leave the rally in Rawalpindi near the capital Islamabad. A gunman then blew himself up.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf. Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

Some smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears. One man with a flag of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party tied around his head was beating his chest.

At least 20 others were killed in the blast that took place as Bhutto left a political rally where she addressed thousands of supporters in her campaign for Jan. 8 parliamentary elections.

Bhutto served twice as Pakistan's prime minister between 1988 and 1996. She had returned to Pakistan from an eight-year exile Oct. 18.

Her homecoming parade in Karachi was also targeted by a suicide attacker, killing more than 140 people. On that occasion she narrowly escaped injury.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw body parts and flesh scattered at the back gate of the Liaqat Bagh park in Rawalpindi where the rally was held. He counted about 20 bodies, including police, and could see many other wounded.

The road outside was stained with blood and people screamed for ambulances. Others gave water to the wounded lying in the street. The clothing of some of the victims was shredded and people put party flags over their bodies.

The bomb went off just minutes after Bhutto spoke to thousands of supporters and she appeared to be the target of the attack. Farahtullah Babar, the spokesman for her party, said her vehicle was about 50 yards away from blast which went off as she was leaving the rally venue.

I wonder who did it. There are at least 4 parties with vested interests to see her killed. Musharaf, The Opposition Coalition, The Islamic Extremist and India. Who stand to gain so much with her gone? A queen can always be sacrificed for a pawn if the cause is right.

A Very Sad Day for Mankind.

Who assassinated Pakistani opposition leader Mrs. Benazir Bhutto ?

Who assassinated Ex-Premier Mr. Ranjiv Gandhi 17 years ago ? Same circumstances ?

Was it very poor security provided during both Rallies ?

Was it both of them have ignored high level intelligence service advice to take extra precautions ?

Or both failed to be more careful in mingling with the election crowds.

There is simply no logic to these sad events that happened today and 17 years ago .
It is really a crazy and mad world.

Whoever did this, may have extinguished Benazir's life, but not her spirit. For that will live on for the sake of restoring democracy and freedom her nation.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Benazir Bhutto, as well as all the others killed. And may all those who are injured be healed soon.

A very sad day for Pakistan. The only chance for a true democracy has been silenced by a country infested with dictators and militant and terrorist groups.

This is indeed a very sad day in politics and a sad day for democracy. Mrs. Benazir Bhutto despite what has been said about her corrupt goverment when she was the Premier was expected to bridge the gap between the West and the moderate Muslims in what the West saw in Benazir Bhutto. I heard that her return to Pakistan and her desire to return to politics was an attempt to clear her name with regards to the corruption charges brought onto her. She went to exile in UK in fear for her own safety. But when she returned back home two months ago she was warned that her life would be in danger. She ignores this warning saying ' there may be a hundred who are against me but there are millions who supported me'. Immediiately when she returned from exile there were mayhem on the streets of Pakistan with car bombings and people were killed indiscrimately.

This is the price one had to pay in politics unfortunately. It only need one person to do the damage although there may be millions who suppoted her.

Through an interview held by NEWS 24, her cousin described her death as unnecessary for she could have enjoyed her life in Britain with the millions or billions that she has but she chosed to return home to continue fighting for what she really believe in helping the Pakistani people out of the rot from President Musharraf's military rule. He cousin, when asked by the reporter told the world that Benazir Bhutto's death was orchestrated by Musharraf's man. Wallahualam. Reason: He will not allow anybody to oppose him.

International leaders condemned this act of barbarism and most said that this is the work of extremist. You and I know when the West say extremist what they meant is terrorism.

I feel very sad because as many of you may agree or may not agree, taking someone's life is the work of Allah and not fellow human being. We cannot afford to take the law into our hands and start killing innocent people in the name of politics. Even in Islam, there are certain criteria that we Muslim need to follow before we strike back. And what puzzled me most is that person who killed Benazir Bhutto himself is a muslim. Isn't this gives Islam a bad name. The Bhutto family was murdered for two or three generations by assasins in the name of politics.

We must all try and protect the mind of our young that they must not bring violence in our country in the name of politics. Peaceful discussions and dialogue must be encouraged so that people have an outlet to air their grievances. What happened in Malaysia recently with the street demonstration clearly shows that people are not happy that they do not have an avenue to open-up their frustrations freely. I really hope that people in power will allow space for law abiding citizens to speak in a civilized and control manner without having to take their anger to the street as what happened before. This will ensure that we have peace and stability in our beloved country Malaysia.

"Reap what you sow" - That is what is happening in Pakistan.
This universal law should always be kept in mind by all of us.

You forgot a bunch of others. Osama or Taliban; to name a few. CIA, perhaps without Musharaf knowing wants to keep him in power. Too late to speculate; she is dead. Bless her. I am not surre if she was not too corrupt. Blame her husband; perhaps.

So pls dont blame Hilary for Bill's **** ups.

Osama and his terrorists have a grudge againsts her because Benazir Bhutto talked in CNN quite a few times that she stand for democracy and moderation and that Osama and extremists wanted her dead.

Guess she is right, sad day for Pakistan and for democracy. Don't think Musharaf have any dumb fanatics under him to blow themselves up for him so only person who could do it are those extremists who kill people in the name of religion.

Musharraf blamed Islamic terrorists, pledging that "we will not rest until we eliminate these terrorists and root them out."

Al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri decried Bhutto's return in a video message this month and called for attacks on all the candidates in the Jan. 8 elections. And according to Bhutto, several Pakistanis arrested in an assassination attempt during her second term in the mid-1990s said they were following Osama bin Laden's orders.

The U.S.-backed, British-educated leader who pledged to redouble Pakistan's fight against Islamic militancy was also despised by Taliban-style radicals backed by tribes along the border with Afghanistan, where American forces are battling rising militant violence.

Baitullah Mehsud, a tribal warlord in the Waziristan region, was quoted in a Pakistani newspaper as saying that he would welcome Bhutto's return with suicide bombers. He later denied that in statements to local television and newspaper reporters.

Khalid Khwaja, a former Pakistani intelligence officer and self-declared friend of bin Laden, said Bhutto "was very openly threatening these tribal people."

"Naturally some of them could have done it," he said. "She was certainly hated to that degree by those elements who are victims of the American terror."

Bhutto also was labeled an infidel by groups such as Jaish-ul Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and Hezb-ul Mujahedeen, which were spawned by Pakistan's military and intelligence services to take on neighboring India in the disputed Kashmir region.

The groups later aligned themselves with al-Qaida and have vowed to battle foreign troops in Afghanistan, and wage war against the Pakistani military for its support of the U.S.-led anti-terror campaign. Some of their leaders said Bhutto deserved to die for her threats to crush militants.

"I think by far the most likely (suspect) is the al-Qaida organization, which has been trying to kill Bhutto for the better part of the decade," said Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former senior director for South Asia on the National Security Council.

"If it's not them, it's certainly one of the groups that are sympathetic with them," Riedel said. "They all work together and share a common antipathy to Bhutto because she's a woman, an advocate of secularism, a supporter of democracy and everything they stand against."

In an interview with the AP in November, a former district leader of Hezb-ul Mujahedeen said some members of Pakistan's intelligence establishment resented the idea of a woman leading a Muslim nation, as well as Bhutto's denunciation of militant Muslims. Hezb-ul Mujahedeen is believed to be heavily funded by Pakistani intelligence to fight in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

U.S. officials in Washington said they were trying to determine who might have carried out the attack.
