THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

It is not known when the next general election will be called. Some say it will be 15 March 2008. Some say earlier. And some say Abdullah will allow his term to run until the last day, which is 21 March 2009. Whatever it may be, one thing is clear, 60% of the candidates will be new faces. And many will be from the next generation, the under 40s age group.

We need a leadership change, said Shahrir Samad, the then Chairman of the Parliament Backbenchers' Club, popularly known as BBC. You could almost hear a pin drop in the conspicuous silence, a predictable response to what most would regard as a 'bombshell' in the days when dissent was perceived as tantamount to insulting the very Prophet himself. Shahrir allowed his matter-of-fact statement to sink in as he slowly and deliberately glanced across the length and breadth of the room before he broke the silence with his follow-through declaration.

Mahathir has to go, and it should not be Anwar Ibrahim who takes over, Shahrir added while giving me a piercing stare as if to sink home the point that the part about Anwar was meant specifically for me, the man who carried the title of Director of the Free Anwar Campaign. It should not even be you or I who takes over, Shahrir clarified further to make it clear to all and sundry that his point about Anwar was not personal in nature but based on principles, though I certainly harboured no ambitions to take over the running of this country.

The people who should be taking over the running of this country has to be the next generation, those under 40, argued Shahrir. This country belongs to the next generation. Our days are gone. We need young blood with fresh ideas, Shahrir explained in the event there were still some who were wondering why our generation was over-the-hill and why the need for this country to be handed over to our children.

Look at Singapore. They are successful because the older generation does not cling to power but the young are groomed to take over. Malaysia has to emulate Singapore, Shahrir ended his declaration with what could be considered as blasphemy.

That was six years or so ago, the era when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was still the Prime Minister. And it was not wise in those days to compare Malaysia to Singapore. What is good for Singapore may also be what is good for Malaysia. But one must never say this. But then Shahrir is never one to follow convention. In fact, the more Mahahir does not like Malaysia to be compared to Singapore the more Shahrir would say it, as if he is purposely trying to needle Mahathir in an attempt to rub him the wrong way.

It is no secret that Shahrir's pet hate is Mahahir while the man he hates the most after Mahathir is Anwar Ibrahim. No wonder he feels Malaysia has no place for either Mahathir or Anwar. But he did qualify by saying that it should not be he or we who takes over either. It should be the next generation, those below 40.

Six years or more have since gone by and what Shahrir said is now all water under the bridge. Mahathir has since left the scene but it is still the older generation that is running this country. The younger generation, those below 40, are not yet holding the reins of power as per Shahrir's prognosis. Those running this country are still those from that generation which Shahrir said has to go. Yes, that may be so, they may not yet be in the driver's seat, but they are certainly walking in the corridors of power and are instrumental in charting this country's destiny.

Many hate current Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi because he is not capable of running the country with an iron fist the way Mahathir was able to. But then, when Mahathir was running this country, they hated him for that very same reason, because he was running it with an iron first. They felt that Mahathir should delegate more and not decide single-handedly everything down to what tree should be planted and where it should be planted.

Yes, when Mahathir first took over as Prime Minister, he took the Federal Territory Minister and the Lord Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, together with the City Hall officers, on a bus ride around the city one Sunday so that he can brief them on how the landscaping should be done. He told them which tree should be chopped down and where the new ones should be planted and in which location there was a need for flowers. When they renovated the Subang Airport he personally supervised the work and even decided on the colour of the check-in counters. Mahathir was engineer, architect, interior designer and town planner all in one. And in spite of that heavy workload, he read every scrap of paper and every report before all the meetings and nothing got by him unnoticed.

Then we have Abdullah and he reads nothing and is not able to get through half a page of an A4 document without losing concentration while struggling to not fall asleep. Abdullah is the exact opposite of Mahathir. And while Mahathir had his hands on the pulse of even the minutest details, Abdullah allows the country to operate on autopilot. No, the country is not being run by the older generation. As what Shahrir wanted, the country is being run by the next generation, the under-40s age group. Shahrir got his wish after all. The only difference is that the next generation, the under-40s, is not sitting on the throne. But it is certainly the power behind the throne. While it appears like the older generation is running this country, the truth is those under-40s, the next generation, is walking in the corridors of power and decides what happens to this country leaving Abdullah free to embark on his overseas jaunts every two weeks or so.

The days of the Umno Warlords will soon be a thing of the past. People like the Menteris Besar of Perlis, Perak, Johor and Pahang and the Chief Ministers of Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak will have to make way for new and younger faces. Many members of the Cabinet, in particular those carrying baggage, will be dropped. And these changes will also affect the component members of the Barisan Nasional ruling coalition.

Umno's as well as Barisan Nasional's problem is that the warlords call the shots. As strong-minded as Mahathir may have been, he could not ignore the warlords. And Abdullah suffered the same thing when he took over, which is why he did not dare drop any of the old faces and was forced to retain what could be perceived as Mahathir's legacy. Mahahir was powerless in spite of being accused of running this country with an iron fist. Abdullah, a lesser man that Mahathir, would certainly not be able to discard the warlords even if his life depended on it.

But it is not Abdullah who is determining who gets dropped and which new faces and young blood replaces them. That is the job of his team of advisors on the fourth floor who owe their allegiance to Khairy Jamaluddin. These are those who now walk in the corridors of power and who are charting this country's direction. Notable amongst them are the likes of Zaki Azmi, Omar Ong, Norza Zakaria and the aggressive team of yuppies who are determined to shed the old ways and emulate how Singapore brought that tiny Island State onto the world stage.

Zaki and Omar come from what could be said to be illustrious families. Their fathers were already big names even as they were still learning how to walk. Even their boss, Khairy, can be considered as from an elite family since his father was a diplomat. Khairy, in fact, spent most of his youth in elite international schools and grew up amongst the selected few. Norza, however, is another kettle of fish. He hails from a humble background, the son of a schoolteacher, and in a feudal system where you have to be somebody to become somebody, Norza can be said to be an exception amongst the lot.

Malays in general and Umno in particualr still subscribe to the feudal system. Most come up through family connections. Mahathir is probably amongst the rare breed who was from a 'nobody' background and that is why many looked at him with awe. In a system where you must have been born from or at the very least marry into the right family, moving up on your own steam is not an easy option.

Mahathir, however, is not exactly a nobody. Siti Hasmah is from an established family as was the late Endon. Therefore, as much as we might pass off both Mahathir's and Abdullah's fathers as simple schoolteachers, their wives were from established families. So Mahathir and Abdullah both had the advantage of their wives' connections to get a head-start in life. And the same can also be said about Khairy who probably would still have made it but certainly at a much slower pace if not for the fact that he is married to the Prime Minister's daughter.

Khairy and his team of fourth floor boys, all under-40 yuppies, have big plans for the future. And they are not about to allow anyone to stand in their way. But they must first send all the warlords into retirement. And this will be done come the next election when the old faces will be dropped in favour of fresh faces. It is not just that these faces are new though. They will also be aggressive and professional yuppies who know what they want and know how to get it.

Norza, as an example, may be the offspring of a simple kampong schoolteacher. But he has left the kampong behind him and has moved on. For some, you can take the boy out of the kampong but you can't take the kampong out of the boy. And kampong politics is the politics of warlords and patronage. The young kowtow to the elders and treat the elders like demigods. However, this is not the lifestyle of the fourth floor boys who walk in the corridors of power. Theirs is a lifestyle of survival of the fittest and where meritocracy reigns supreme. It will be very difficult for the old warlords to fathom all this but, like it or not, their days are numbered. This may be six years too late as far as Shahrir is concerned but they do say better late than never.

Yes, Malaysia is about to see changes. The Shahidans, Anuars, Tajols, Adnans, Rahims, Musas, Tengku Adnans, and many of those remnants of the Mahathir era will go the way of the Megat Junids, Sanusis and Khalils who were sent out to pasture not that long ago. Even the likes of Ku Li and Rais and those viewed as still having some political clout face the prospect of being sent into retirement. Soon, Malaysia will be led by those who wish to claim their inheritance by force and not wait for it to be handed to them when the old folks get tired of public life or, by divine intervention, die off.

These people know what life is all about. They know what they want from life. And they are not scared of grabbing what they want without waiting for it to be served like the old ways of the old days. They live well, they eat well, they dress well, and they know the power of money and what money can do for you. They also know that only through the attainment of power can you realise your dreams.

These yuppies have plans for this country. They know what needs to be done. And they know that mere cosmetic changes are not enough; you need to push for a paradigm shift. And, in this paradigm shift, old ways need to be discarded. And, in this paradigm shift, the Old Guard too needs to be discarded. Invariably, from the ashes of these Old Guards will rise the Young Turks, those from the fourth floor, the yuppies who walk through the corridors of power and who are extremely in a hurry and have no patience to tolerate the old ways or kowtow to those tired old men and women who jealously guard their turf in a feeble attempt to prop up the crumbling empires of the Little Napoleons and Umno Warlords who no longer have a place in a globalised, borderless world.

Active Image

Norza Zakaria, now the Political Secretary to the Finance Minister II and tipped to be the future Finance Minister. His critics call him the next Daim Zainuddin.

Active Image

These Old Guards used to kiss Mahathir's hand but now refuse to take his calls. However, in spite of all this hand-kissing, will they still be around come next election?

Active Image

The fates and fortunes of many an Umno Warlord and Little Napoleon rests in the hands of Khairy Jamaluddin, and they are all making a beeline to his door to ensure that they will be retained as candidates in the 12th General Elections due any time now.

Active Image

The billion dollar question is: will Najib be contesting the next election and, even if he is, will he be reappointed the Deputy Prime Minister? Najib's continued presence is an obstacle to the career progression of the fourth floor yuppies.

Good Luck, Malaysia. The rakyat sinks when the change turns out to be any mistake. The rakyat also sink if the change turns out to be good because the wealth of this country would not filter down to benefit you and me. Whatever and whoever plays the trump cards with the best jokers on hand, the rakyat gonna find 2008 to be a very tough year ahead. So forget the HAPPY New Year traditional greetings this time round for once. It's the new year alright, and there's nothing happy about the next 365 days ahead. Brace for the onslaught of more hardships and more cunning deceit from this present ruling government.

My view is, some of the more powerful old warlords will survive the next power-grabbing excercise in umno. But whatever, everything will be just as bad for the rakyat since the overall corrupt system will remain. What we really need is a new Government, sans the bn. Otherwise the rakyat got no hope under the bn.

Yahoo! I was about to shout to hear of the demise of UMNO's warlords and Napoleons. Then reality sets in- they will only be replaced by that presumptous fellow using father-in-law's coat tails & the rest of his gang. Don't know which is worst! Only time will tell. But your analysis puzzles me somewhat. How is it that that fella is able to muster so much clout within such a short time? Ya, I know his FIL is the PM but still...Only hope looks like if BN is denied the 2/3 majority in the elections.

This is definitely welcomed. The message to the old warlords is clean up your mess, ready for departure or you'll see cans and cans of your worms being opened long after you're gone.

Meritocracy is one of the main cores of the country's return to the "economic race" within the region, but it must be accompanied also by media transparency, corruption eradication and most of all a judiciary that rules based on the constitution, not on religious, racial, UMNO or any other partial bias.

We'll have to see how this plays out..and I hope it won't be too late for Malaysia. NO Malaysian would want this beloved country move backwards.

Let's move it!

Lets hope the old warlord Najib will go face to face with KJ and his boys and the civil war will tear UMNO apart. With UMNO split into 2 distinct camps, its easier to bring it down as other BN component parties will now have to decide which of the sides it wants to lick their shoes.

Plutocracy.. That is kind of government that we have in Malaysia, os more precisely, what we shall have. As soon as those 4th floor 'yuppies' consolidates, say goodbye to democracy as we know it. Please do not mistake plutocracy for democracy. They may have the same 'cracy' thingie, but they are not, the least similar.

Malaysia's fate is on a declining path. As time passes many things that have not happened in an age have come to pass. The people's disatisfaction seeps in and occasionaly shows itself. This show of unhappiness would seem more apparent as time passes. These are dark times for our country, and darker times lay ahead.

Young Turks - did they fight tooth and nail for the indepence of our country? Or are they fighting for money and power? - Have the wrestled the country from an occupying force or from their fellow man? - And when the time comes when this country is at the mercy of invasion from occupying forces, will they stand against it as their forefathers have? or will they turn tail?

God knows...

Dear Pete,

Good stuff. In my humble 2 cents opinion, the young turks (new kids on the block) may not be able to lauch a total pustch to outstered all the old farts from Umnno warlord clans. Why???

Answer is very simple and straight as the chinaman hair, its $$$$ and tons of it.

Kaili may have RM200 million assets and his buddies says another RM400millions , but you know what, those old tired cunning shrewed warlords which have been in power for decades (as ministers or MB's or CM's) have a combination of billions (via mega corruptions and misaapropriation of funds) not only can buy votes or position in the Unmmo clubs but also to buy this young farts to switch side and kow tow to their old wrinkly ass like a puppy on leash. Hell..with tons of money..they can even convinced the imams that Appollo really landed on the moon(which they did though..sorry to dissapoint 'em religious dudes) .

No doubt Kaili and his new buddies will soon be be holding autopiloting the country assets near future by their joysticks but tis will not happen so soon because all 'em Umnno old warlords need this second term to clean and washed all the evidence of their ill gotten gain wealth and power misused (or abused, whichever comes first) before they head on to their lavished second home in Argentina,Bermudas, Bahamas, Trinidad,Australia, Pacific Isles, etc with their beloved families and luv ones (plus tons of green backs and pounds).

This victory for another term are very critical moment before they relinguished their deacade long power so when it is time for kaili and the new kids on the block took over a much bankrupted Malaysia Inc., 'em kids got no evidence of any wrongdoin by this old farts in a kangaroo humping court and the country doesn't have any dime left to quenched their yuppie thirst for the legendary Inca gold mine.

The real loosers in YoYoLand hardcover fiction will be its people whom don't know what hit 'em and will forever blaming their neigbours and imaginary enemies of their misfortune as the 'old warlords laugh all the way to their paradise on earth.

If the succession plan of the gomen is anticipated as above (an excellent analysis), then the citizenry will forever remain nothing more than a commodity item to the gomen. Even the current middle class shall end up with the short end of the stick eventually. Looks like the best hope is to look forward to greener pastures overseas........if you can't beat them, get out of their way? The thousands and thousands who have done so are mostly winners. Well Pete , Your article is not what it is suppose to mean . I read in between the lines and the message is quite CLEAR . Firstly to the new breed of candidates below 40 . I have this to say , based on the current situation as I know it I don't think it will happen ie putting new faces below 40 in the component parties . Putting 20 to 30 percent of new faces in the coming GE is possible and acceptable . In UMNO I do not wish to talk about it , what they do to their candidates and their party is their business , since they have a bunch of they think they know all at the fourth floor . What they don't know is their ALLAH is watching them from above . Coming back to your article , my contention is that during the past election there were many elected with over whelming support with 15000 to 20000 votes majority . At the current situation these YBs can still win but with just a simple majority of maybe a few thousand votes . This is what they need a winning horse at this current situation , not a dead horse . As for those who won with a simple majority I think they will be scratch , ie not fielded and these YBs who won convincinly are those in their 50s and above . To replace a winning horse with a young horse is SUICIDAL . They are up against two enemies . One they have to contend with the CHANGE GOVERNMENT SYNDROME from the Rakyat and two INTERNAL BACK STABBING . So in other words very little chance of survival or winning . The other issue here is I think you are constantly reminding us about the BOYS FROM THE FOURTH FLOOR . Well PETE let them continue to do what as they pleases . Give them enough rope to hang themselves as the saying goes . The more irresponsible and outrages things they do will see an equally strong backfire . This is the law of KARMA , for every action will see an equally strong reaction or for that matter for every cause there will be an effect . Let them be , they are helping us to destroy themselves . By giving us issues to bring up or to write about it . Without them NO ISSUES TO WHACK . ROME IS BURNING , very soon it is going to collaspe . TUN DIAM mentioned only three hotspots ie KEDAH , PENANG and SELANGOR . I forsee four more MALACCA with the pig issue , NEGRI SEMBILAN , TRENGGANU and PERAK . As for SABAH there is definitely some unhappiness with the GODDESS issue in KUDAT , how that will translate in the GE left to be seen . The CHINESE have a saying when you have bad luck all sorts of problem will be looking for you . No problem will manifest itself into Small problems .Small problems will become Big problems . However when you are lucky and the gods are smiling at you . Big problems become Small problems and Small problems will become No problem , TIDAK ADA MASALAH . This aplies to both people and government . You can see it coming ................

How do you change the system that is so corrupt and feudal? From the top of UMNO hierachies to the universities appointment. How do you get rid of those Universities head and civil servant's head that do not believe in meritocracy? HOW?

You have to basically overturn the country upside down. The municipal councils reports to the CM of the state. CM of the state has so many cronies and families to take care. So easily more than half of the goverment projects goes to the CM's cronies and families. Do you think any PM or let alone any Son-In Law can handle these warlords.

I say the warlords wins. The rakyat lose. Until there is a total change of the rulling party like Indonesia, Thailand and Philipines where the people vote the opposition over whelmingly, otherwise Malaysia is going down. in 10 years time, Malaysian economy will be in the same group with Philipines, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia will be a group above Malaysia. This is reality now.

How can a person be trusted to install a 'meritocractic' system when he himself has used very unmeritocratic means to obtain power?

Relatedly, how can this Khairy be trusted to ensure that we Malaysians live in a fairer society if he does not hesitate to use the race card to further his own position?

Actions speak louder than words: we must take care not to be blinded by all that bling (Oxbridge education, well-cut suits, slick hairdos). This seems to me to be a case of old wine (quite bad quality wine!) in a new flashy bottle.

I guess this article is a kinda wake-up call to arms directed to those warlords against the 4th floor boys. The warlords surely have a rich enough armoury at their disposal after all the years. Remember "Throwing the cat amongst the pigeons"? No one is going off without a fight.

Yes, at present we cannot defeat the country's no.1 enemy. But it can be weakened and encouraged to self-destruct from within to the benefit of Barisan Rakyat. Anyway, the biggest enemy of BN is itself. And defeat BN we MUST, though no one can be certain about the time frame. What we can be certain is that we are going the way of the pariah countries with UMNO being primarily an agent of injustice and corruption, out-corrupting each other. RPK here tries to batu-api to help them kill each other for the country, whereas UMNO batu-api against all races and religions to divide and rule to perpetuate their regime. We are having servants turned renegades. M'sians, as responsible loyal citizens and parents, therefore need to be determined, persistent, persevere and perennially spread the news to those less initiated.

JustGan, there's not a single capable and trustworthy leader in UMNO as we can see. But we still have enough capable M'sian leaders to undo the damage which will of course take many years even if we were to start now, like education for example. To bank on the warlords or KJ gang to run the show in perpetuity is to invite certain death for our beloved land.

Teo Siew Chin, I enjoy and look forward to most of your witty comments though not in this instance. Peace.

hmmmmm looks like the general consensus is better the devil known! Kenny - RPK only tells it as it is, who he is a fan of is beside the point. It is evident at all times that RPK loathes corruption and injustice which is ever prevalent in this nation and that is why he hates everybody! But the truth of the matter is : BN will rule for all time. We just have to live with it!

We can make a lot of noise now in anticipation of the coming GE - in direct proportion to a lot of roads being newly tarred. But the end result is just that - only a lot of noise. More opposition seats will be won but running the country? Well, hope springs eternal! And stranger things have happened!

I am not pro KJ. I am pro Malaysians, hence my earlier comments. KJ has indeed displayed racism and unscrupulous behaviour. Based on their actions and words, KJ, Badawi and the UMNO warlords are certainly unacceptable. However, compare KJ to the others including Hishamudin - KJ appears to be the lesser of the evils in power. We in MT and elswhere have been greatly influenced by Tun Dr. Mahathir's tirade against KJ for reasons which are not matching with those we ascribe to KJ when we label him as undesirable. Tun Dr. Mahathir's criticisms of KJ were most harsh, even though the reasons for such harshness were not clear to us all. Many of us appear to have been influenced by the Tun's attack of KJ and hence the total rejection of anything KJ even if it is an opportunity. If it is possible to bring about the much needed change in Malaysian politics without KJ, i.e. change to a responsible and clean government for the people, then let us ignore KJ and proceed. The truth is that no one in MT or even in Malaysia as a whole can foresee the current Opposition replacing BN/UMNO. That's the reality. The Opposition, NGOs, Bar Council, MT, etc. cannot get rid of the Najibs, Nazris, Hishamudins, Khirs, Samys, Rafidahs, Keng Yiks, Kah Tings, Zakarias, etc. etc. etc. They have tried and failed, and will fail. Hence, let us exploit the opportunity provided by KJ to at least rid Malaysian politics of the scum that has been accumulating.

Teo, "BN will rule for all time".

Short of violence, M'sia needs the Malays to rise up and form a M'sian party. Some optimism is called for here. There's nothing to lose. Our job is to spread the news, election after election, until they can rig no more. Enlighten the people: When kids turn into adults, tarred roads or candies work no more too. Expect some massive rallies next year- yes, lots of noise.

"The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who do not do anything about it".(Albert Einstein)

If we value our birthplace, there is a price to pay. If we do not, there's a bigger and long-term price to pay. Emigration is never an easy option for most people.

I have willingly marched in the choking teargas and have personally fetched some friends for voter registration and also converted some BN voters, not to mention tens of my extended family members. This, I think is something one should do; because having the knowledge to know the difference, will mean nothing, if one does not have the courage to make the difference. At least we can tell the children with a straight face that we did fight for them.

Let us solve our ills together, rather than being divided- that's a strategy of the UMNO regime we ought not to be inspired with.

Just Gan, sure you know KJ is a hurried prick who lives on women to get where he shouldn't be. The fact that he speaks as though he's the PM reflects on the type of person that he really is. Otherwise, try reading Khairy Chronicles by RPK.

Happy New Year to all!

We must be dreaming!

That’s what the UMNO young Turks and Ultras dream and wish with all their hearts to be so! I suppose if wishes were horses, fools would ride!

The secret is in the MONEY. He who has the money wins!

All those young arrogant UMNO asses think that it is now their time to conquer and rule: to take over all the country’s PLC etc and in fact it will be their time of lust and plenty. And to squeeze out all the old ultras that are in their path: those old Ultras that were the thorns that skewed TDM off the straight and narrow!

Well my money is on TDM! Of course many in the MCC would be missing (bankrupt): those that took side with the UMNO young Turks.

What kind of TDM will we be getting the second time round? Perhaps one that would be independent of UMNO: one that could clean up the shits he (TDM) created. We shall see!

BTW Malaysia is not like Singapore. Malaysia had wasted most of its valued human resources and capitals which had taken flight or on the verge of doing so!

If RPK's projection of the imminent political developments in UMNO is accurate, it will be a Provident gift to the to the Rakyat for the New Year. UMNO is now caught between these options: (a) to change, which means getting rid of Warlords and Little Napoleans, or (b) remain status quo and be overwhelmed by the Rakyat's dissatisfactions and grievances. This dilemma is aptly descibed by the Chinese saying: to have one's balls caught in a vice, to try to extricate it is very painful, to do nothing is just as painful. This impending political battle within UMNO, which is also a battle between two evils, will spell the beginning of the end of UMNO. The Warlords' warchest and their network of subservient UMNO grass-root members can easily match the 'political clout' of the Young Turks. The best end result is for UMNO to self-destruct. UMNO, sustained by either of the two evils, is still hellish for the Rakyat.
Can the flame of patriotism unite the Opposition Parties into an effective coalition to take over control from the BN UMNO at the next GE?

There is this war strategy that says "kill or be killed".

Anwar made the biggest blunder in politics by declaring officially that he was not going to challenge his mentor. Soon after his mentor had to "kill" him off because of the threat to the leadership. It is not easy for Anwar to fight back unless he fully understand The Art of War (Sun Tzu), and learn how to work with friends and comrades and leverage with the "enemies".

The Team A in UMNO has to take the opportunity in this coming general election to kill off Team B, if ever they want to retain power. Otherwise Team B will fight back and challenge Team A in the not too distant future. If the split in UMNO is not managed properly then maybe we can have a better scenario for the opposition to gain ground.

The incumbents must be smart to kill or be killed!

I don't think this transitioning is going to happen that quickly. Because Najib and Hissamuddin has too much invested in the old guards to just let things change. They need the pre-KJ people to hold on to power and their short at the top job.

No I don't think the change will be that drastic. There will be change of course but most of those below 40 will still have to wait.

Sometime, we have to admit that being human isn't always perfect. People do carry emotion toward certain subject. As for what everyone claims that BN has done little to unite the races, you might be wrong. There are issues to project into the future. We are still not mentally prepared for one bangsa. Let's say the Chinese and Indian are prepared (because they are minority and easier to get a focus group to resolve themselve), the Malay may not be prepared to allow them to claim this land belongs to them too.

Historically, Malay inhabited this land earlier. Or shall i say, 'colonised' this land earlier, despite the orang asli has been around for ages transcended from prehistoric and social movement.

That rules, we say, finders keepers. Hence, they are not easily gonna let go this land despite being majority to accept other minorities from all over Malaysia to claim this land is theirs.

It's a subject of maturity. With more involvement of Education and Modern Culture assertion, someday, they'll be in the right mindset to accept the fact that this land belongs to no one, be a shared land.

You can vote for whoever you think represent you best. But keep certain things in mind. To shape a person's mindset isn't easy.

BN will win the next GE. That's for sure. Not a doubt on that. So, with a tighter control, they'll still rules for time to comes.

Sometimes, sacrifices had to be made. Certain quarters may not be competent in doing certain things. Hence, the competent group shall help the incompetent group.

whats the big deal about age?

its not how old one is...its about how old one ACTs...

< 40 doesnt = positive change but

< 40 could easily = disasterous screw-ups

lets not just emulate some of the large corporations being led by very young CEOs...take for example...the son of Rupert Murdoch...who was recently appointed head honcho of a huge slice of the Murdoch empire..except also be aware of the following:

1. the young Murdoch has been exposed to daddy's biz empire since he was in diapers...big daddy himself has groomed and coached him...he has worked thro the ranks...he has shadowed his old man...for years...and gained the experience and the trust not only of his father but the people he works with...while

where has KJ come from? who has he served his apprenticeship with? how long for? if he hadnt married into power would he be where he is today? nepotism is a lame man's only access up the tree of power...

2. who is behind young Murdoch?...yup u r right...the old man himself...and he is there to pick him up when he falls and grazes his knees...and kiss it better...

who is behind KJ? AAB? AAB cant even keep awake let alone guide and nurture him!!!

(the leaders of spore are indeed young..but they are also ABLE...and altho the face of modern spore is youthful...they have diehard and seasoned oldguards (including LKY himself) still there in the background to ensure all is well...have we?)

and 3. when young Murdoch screws up...its HIS company...and HIS money...i know i know...shareholders money and all that...but u know what i mean...while

when KJ screws up...it OUR money...yours and mine...

(if KJ wants to play dictator..i suggest we SELL him an island off pulau jerajak...even build him a throne...and if he does good after 10years...then maybe..and only maybe will we consider him to run for dictator of malaysia..)

so the long and short of it is...

NO WAY WILL THIS YOUNG

Hmm, interesting... it's only natural to replace a bunch of crooks with a fresh bunch... it happens in every Cantonese gangster series that we watch... the only question is, will these guys go quietly? That's where AAB's quietly accumulated war chest comes to play... retirement funds, among other things smilies/grin.gif
