S. Ali Mahmud Okay, now we all know the reason behind Election Commission’s decision to not use the inedible ink.
Based on the explanation given, apparently there have been some people who purchased the same ink and intend to mark the ink on some voters to ensure that these people disqualify from voting. So I love to post this first question before I dwell on further, why can’t the Election Commission think of ways to ensure that the Malaysian citizens are not illegitimately deprive of their constitutional rights to vote? As a layman who rides the Putra LRT daily, what came to my immediate thinking is the Election Commission should leverage on the media and disseminate messages about the importance of citizens exercising their constitutional rights freely. The message can be ‘DO NOT LET ANYONE OTHER THAN ELECTION COMMISSION OFFICIALS MARK YOUR FINGER AND DEPRIEVE YOU OF YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS’ (I am even offering the statement to them). Inform the public to disallow anyone to mark their fingers if they have yet to cast their votes. This message can be disseminated via the local daily, RTM, and all private owned channels. The next step is who should mark the ink on the voters and when? Well, upon registering for voting and poll papers being given to the voter, the voters should be immediately marked ONLY BY AN OFFICER APPOINTED BY THE ELECTION COMMISION and NOBODY ELSE with the black ink and thereafter proceed to the voting booth to exercise his/her voting rights. In the event where there is still some kind of cheating that ‘probably’ occurs, it should be beyond the control of the Election Commission. However, it would at least demonstrates that the Election Commission has exercise due diligence to ensure that voters are not either deprive of their rights to vote or cast their votes twice. What is so difficult in dealing with such methods? Now, it explains the intelligence of the people who are appointed to hold position in such important agencies, need I say more? Indeed I will and why? Because these unintelligent people also presumed that the citizens of this country share the same level of their intelligence, which to me is extremely insulting. Listening to the explanation given by Mahathir in an interview with Malaysiakini, what I can say is, deep in the mind of Mahathir, he still holds to the view that the majority of Malaysian public are not very intelligent and therefore the decision by Election Commission is prudent. I don’t blame Mahathir for forming that opinion about the citizens. How should I defend ourselves when there are some of us who literally took his ‘admission to arresting Anwar’! I remember a quote by Robert Redford in a movie titled ‘The Way We Were’, he said to Barbra Streisand, who acted as his wife, ‘When you love, you turn blind and deaf.’ That is the analogy I can draw about these group of Anwar’s supporters. Thus, I have to agree with Mahathir. After having him for the last 22 years as Prime Minister, shouldn’t almost everyone understand Mahathir’s demeanour? I once shared my view about Mahathir with a friend about how Mahathir views himself as the most ‘Righteous’ that even when he is facing his Creator, it is very unlikely he will ever bow his head down! That is his level of ego. Coming back to the issue with regard to the inedible ink, this is the perception of the government agencies with regard to the citizens’ level of intelligence. As such, it feels that it is ‘honourable and prudent’ to reverse the usage of inedible ink in this general Election! You guys know what I mean… On the other hand (there is always the other side of the coin), the citizen’s level of intelligence is clearly a reflection of the country’s education system. Shouldn’t the existing government, which has been ruling the country over the last 50 years, be responsible? The education system must have been so flawed that an agency such as the Election Commission has to step in to ensure that the citizens’ bodies (in this case fingers) are not tempered with unlawful black inedible ink! Emm…. People with clear conscience are less crafty in thinking about deception tactics. It is usually those sneaky ones who would perpetuate tricks and various defences to protect themselves. In so far as I am concern, if one has the intention to cheat, there will be a thousands and million ways to execute it. Most importantly, as at now, how sincere is the Election Commission is discharging its duty fairly and justly?
