KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - MILLIONS of Malaysians are expected to not bother voting in Saturday's elections, in a wave of apathy that observers credit to boredom and a feeling of alienation from the ruling coalition.

After a half-century in power, no one is under any illusion that their vote could dislodge the mighty Barisan Nasional coalition, despite voter gripes over rising inflation, ethnic tensions and high crime rates.

'We should have a right to make a choice. I'm not voting because to me, there seems to be no choice,' said Mr Akmal Hakim, 29, a waiter at a fast food outlet and one of the young Muslim Malays who are the majority of non-voters.

Former deputy premier Musa Hitam estimated that some five million people would not exercise their right to vote, in a trend he said threatened 'the very fabric of the democratic process'.

'Some are not happy with the government, yet don't feel they should come out and vote against the government. Some say they are simply fed up with politics. They are saying, 'We'll get nothing out of it',' he said in a newspaper interview.

'And some are saying, 'Well, whether we vote or not, they (the coalition) are going to win for sure'.' Newspapers are awash with flattering stories on the government, and television and radio broadcasts are continuously interrupted with expensively produced commercials.

'There is only one choice, vote for BN,' declare the posters and bunting which festoon the cities and villages of multicultural Malaysia, which is home to majority Malays as well as minority ethnic Chinese and Indians.

'What is the point? We all know who is going to win,' said a 23-year-old Malay taxi driver who declined to be named. 'But where is the democracy? Why can't we see the speeches of the other candidates on TV?'

The Election Commission said last year that among Malaysia's 27 million people, a whopping 4.9 million above the voting age of 21 years - 70 per cent of them aged between 21 and 35 - have not registered to vote.

Some 10.9 million people are registered voters but political researchers estimate that 25 per cent of them will not cast their vote this year.

'I am not a registered voter. I don't care what happens in Malaysian politics. This country holds no promise for me and neither does the government,' said 29-year-old software engineer Nigel Wong. 'And this is coming from a person who used to be very patriotic,' he said.

Young Malaysians have given up hope about bringing change
The Merdeka Centre research firm said its studies found that young Malaysians have given up hope of bringing about change through the ballot box.

'Malaysian youth in general do not see themselves as being able to make a difference within their community,' said the centre's pollster Ibrahim Sufian.

He said most of the non-voting population were ethnic Malays who, unlike their traditionally government-supporting parents, are more likely to have dissenting views.

'However, expressing negative views affect them adversely so many are not willing to take that risk. There is a greater sense of apathy among them because of the limited channels for them to express themselves,' he said.

Mr Mohammad Agus Yusoff from the National University of Malaysia said there was an abnormally high proportion of some 35-40 per cent of voters who were still undecided about who to support.

'Silent voters could make or break some election results,' he told the state Bernama news agency this week.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi won in a landslide victory in 2004 but this time faces a more united fight from the opposition which is attempting to deny the government its two-thirds majority for the first time in history. - STRAITS TIMES

My fellow Malaysians,

The battle has not been won, let alone the war. Yes, I have spoken to many who said they will vote BN (God knows why!)I can also confirm there are a lot of phantom voters around, including in my residence. Please continue to keep your eyes and ears out for vote rigging and unfair electoral practices. Please please use this last 36 hours to work hard. There are a lot of housewives and retired civil servants who feel uncomfortable and disloyal voting for the opposition. You NEED to and you MUST explain to them the BN of today is not the same as the BN of 70s and 80s. Please please go house to house if you need to, work the phones and get as many to vote opposition for BOTH state and federal. There is still a lot of work to be done. If YOU read this and agree, BUT do nothing, then please please for the next 5 years, DO NOT COMPLAIN about the government we will be getting. We need you to help, as the opposition machinery is not as well funded and well resourced as that of BN. WE NEED you!! 36 hours left, please do your share. God bless, and may our efforts result in a country where there is a place for all under the Malaysian sun. Let's sacrifice some time and energy to make sure the Malaysia we leave behind for our childrena nd grandchildren is one we can be proud of.

These young Malays who won't work knows that UMNOputra gets all the benefit of politics. So they don't care.

I recently met several young graduates who have done various things but in the end, all of them were joining the civil service, according to them, to get 'cable'. This is how most young Malay feel. Its completely unrealistic which is what is causing the apathy...

For folks who believe that they are above or too good for politics, they shall be doomed to be governed by those less capable, less trustworthy, and more exploitive than them.

Enjoy life being governed by the mediocre, by the inept, and by those who are COMPETING against you by denying you opportunities, exerting pressures, and hijacking your nationa's resources that belong to you.

Well done abstainers - you've certainly helped and contributed to your children's bleak futures.

"Young Malaysians have given up hope about bringing change "

And this before they have even tried.

As you sow, so shall your reap. This is the end product of your obsession with Asian Values....

Latest on candra

He did not convert to Islam because he loved the religion but because he says Muslims are fatalists, and it was his only way he could get anyone to marry him, a cripple. (with due respects to his wife)

Resorting to use of unprincipled people like chandra muzaffar and nallakaruppan shows just how desperate and panicky the bn is. Anuar's message is getting through. Keep tightening the screws on the bn's coffin !!

What clout has the Indians and Chinese all this while anyway?????
The got nothing, EVERYTHING is in umno's hands.
If they want more clout, they have to change the government as soon as possible.

Tail of Snaky Candra Mustafar

While in the political wilderness, candra founded a social justice organisation (sjo). It was a full time job and people actually worried if he could earn enough. His noble answer was that if he "....earned less, just spend less".
He soon rose to fame on the backs of the people's indignation at the governments corruption, injustices and evil.
Then his daughters grew up and one of them applied for a Universiti place. Anuar gave his daughter a scholarship and that bought candra to Anuar's side. He resigned from the sjo saying that he needed money for his daughter's education. He became Anuar's think tank and well paid for it, even got a job as professor at MU. He was so happy that he even organised a human rights seminar and invited mahatew to officiate its opening.
When Anuar was sacked by mahatew, candra's loyalty to Anuar didn't wavered initially. He joined Adilan and fought for Anuar's case.
Then something happened along the way. Anuar' funds dried up after the 1999 GE, and candra severed all ties with Anuar and left in a huff because he couldn’t get his hands on the party’s funds. No more money, what some more.
Now suddenly he has surfaced, looking and talking very prosperous. He has new masters now. And like all people without principles and after being bought over, now condemns their old friends who once help them when they were down. He believes bn will win again, so he is in for a long lucrative friendship with them. He had compromised himself time and time again. But this time he has exposed himself to be a turncoat. JUST has become just him alone, everyone of worth has deserted him.Just like nallakaruppan.

All those who sleep with umno are NOT Chinese !!!
They are TRAITORS !

Let us not fail ourselves this time.
Let us not fail ourselves big time.

Hisapmodin (spit) drinks beer.
Hisapmodin (spit) unfit to be education minister for threatening to kill the Chinese with the keris.
Hisapmodin (spit) takes commission from school bookstores 25% of gross sales.
Hisapmodin (spit) impotent to solve school children heavy school bag problem.
VOTE HISAPMODIN (spit) OUT !!!!!
This Elections should decide whether God or Satan is in charge of Malaysia.
VOTE OPPOSITION !!!

umno (spit) is the colonialist of Malaysia.
umno (spit) is plundering Malaysia without mercy.
umno (spit) is a four-letter word that rhymes with luck.
umno /mic/mca/grkn (spit) = AXIS of EVIL

IT INFURIATES ME EVERYTIME SOMEONE SAYS THAT IT'S A HOPELESS SITUATION. YES THE GOVERNMENT IS BAD, CORRUPT, ROTTEN TO THE CORE AND YOU DON'T LIKE IT ANYMORE. BUT DID YOU MAKE ANY EFFORT TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE OPPOSITION, AND DID YOU THINK LONG AND HARD ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCE IF YOU DON'T VOTE? IF YOU HAVE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE OPPOSITION AND YOU DON'T LIKE THEM, THEN SURELY YOU MUST STILL COMPARE BETWEEN THE TWO AND VOTE FOR THE LESSER EVIL. AND IF YOU FINALLY FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS SOME GOOD IN THEM, THEN SURELY YOU WOULD HAVE MISSED A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY AT CHANGING MALAYSIA FOR THE BETTER. AND NEVER SAY YOUR ONE VOTE MEANS NOTHING. IF YOU ARE AWARE, YOU CAN GET OTHERS TO BE AWARE OF THE ISSUES. IF YOU VOTE, YOU CAN ENCOURAGE ANOTHER TO VOTE. POLITICAL MOVEMENTS DO NOT DROP FROM THE SKY. THEY CATCH ON, SPREAD LIKE VIRUS. IT MAY TAKE JUST ONE PERSON TO BE THE TIPPING POINT AND START THE CHAIN REACTION. THOUGHT THAT PERSON MAY NOT BE YOU, IT COULD BE THE NEXT PERSON YOU ENCOURAGE TO TAKE THE VOTE.

PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR VOTE. REGISTER IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS ELECTIONS. MAKE THE NEXT ELECTIONS COUNT. WE MAY PROBABLY NEED ALL THE ADDITIONAL VOTES TO DISLODGE BN THEN.
