Tale of a short bridge PDF Print

It was the year after General Election 2004. Bayan Baru traffic was at a crawl from the building works of the tall bypass. But one thing that caught many’s attention was a project for a bridge (50-100 meters long bridge across Bayan Baru coastal road bypass into a Free Trade Zone without the need to use traffic lights).

Active Image

The entrance to the FIZ was always clogged up with trailers lining up near the ever incompetent useless custom office providing nothing more than rubber stamping and slowing down the bustling manufacturing business that earn foreign currency for Malaysia. Another entrance also led to a traffic light which is clogging up traffic too.

For a miserable island with nothing but just a workforce, to churn out world-class standard electronic product is quite a feast for the past 30 years. But that half-hanging bridge has become a real symbol of an eyesore to many working in the Free Industrial Zone area. As of today, it is still not finished, yes, not abandoned but still work in progress after three long years.

To tell the world that we have the best talents to attract investors would have been a real joke. For a short bridge that is less than 100 meters long and taken three years to complete is beyond any excuse. Running across just a drainage, no major engineering effort is needed. But it has taken that long.

If given a opportunities, I would like to name it the Koh Tsu Khoon Bridge as in memory of the most useless Chief Clown Minister of Penang ever had. He proudly proclaimed the LRT project and some longest second bridge to complete in three years in the RMK9. That was a nice joke too. A ~23 KM bridge to complete in three years? This is less than 100-meter long bridge and taken more than three years even without any engineering challenge running across a drainage.

Every time he comes around to one of the major multinational companies to give a speech, he always brings up the 7 Samurais story. Little does he know that in the movie some Samurais died. Is he implying something or just plain ignorant. Talk about someone from Ivy League like Princeton, and Chicago University. Perhaps he should go back to being an academician and hopefully helps Malaysia win a Nobel prize instead of messing up Penang further. Many people heave a sigh of relief when it was indicated that he would be leaving for federal office, at least stop further damages being done to that little island.

May have been long at the works but being a short cut to riches is what matters to them.

Koh Tsu Koon has a history of promising what he cannot or do not intend to deliver. He had no choice but to leave Tanjung Bungah state seat because rumours were very strong that he would have lost. If you think I am joking, feel free to go to Tanjung Bungah and see for yourself. Now, he plans to hoodwink Batu Kawan people. My message to Batu Kawan people, before you vote, come see for yourself what little progress he has brought to Tanjung Bungah. Contrary to his own belief, being able to greet the public in 3 or 4 languages is adequate for a MC (master of ceremony) but not for a CM. I challenge Tsu Koon to come up with 10 things HE has done for Tanjung Bungah, other than take credit for what others invcluding Chong Eu has acheived. Chong Eu punya kerja, Tsu Koon dapat nama.

People of PENANG

Here is why you should give your full support to Professor Dr P Ramasamy very experienced, competent and capable, he represents the better of two worlds, a well sought after Political Scientist and an affiliate of an International Think Tank.

Locally and internationally reknown, dubbed as a “street politician” who has done extensive work hand in hand with hawkers, petty traders and small entrepreneurs.

Your only chance, bring in change and it is in your hands, with the stoke of a pen, bring in this man who will champion your cause, fight for your rights even at the risk of his freedom.

Vote for Change. Vote in Prof Ramasamy, a champion for students, a champion for all.

You want to know why many of us are frustrated with Koh Tsu Koon? Too many to list, but here are some very very basic ones:-
1. In front of the Astaka, 7-11 which he passes most days on way to and from his home, lamposts often not working
2. the astaka, which many foreign tourists go for meals, is shambolic and more befitting of 4th world coutries...dirty, unkept, leaking, many stalls unleased: despite his promise to them election year after election year that as the assemblyman responsible for the area, he will do something about it
3.roads that are not unformedly tarred, leading me to think how the contractor got the job in the first place
4. lack of carparks and yet residence houses Jln Sungai Kelian which HE passes everyday is being used for businesses
5. houses which has been broken into time after time, snatch thiefs galore that has made lots of residents fearful of walking on the streets
6. indiscriminate development of high rises without consideratin for the eco-system or traffic
7. sea and beaches where it is no longer clean to swim. I dare him to swim in there, but then again, am worried for safety of what little sealife left in there
indiscrimnate clearing of hill land which means that everytime it rains Sungai Kelian is turned terracota red;
8. Let me tell you this: we used to see him more at functions than at the constituency. He shows his ugly face every election year and asks for votes, then disappears.

Is this the kind of representation you want, Batu Kawan? If what I say is wrong, prove me wrong, Tsu Koon! We know the truth about you...

Dr Toh, an illustrious Gerakan Penang state exco member once remarked that even without a state government, no one would miss it because almost everything concerning the running of the state is with the federal government in Putra Jaya.

Anyway, non-UMNO BN component parties know best how to get rid of irritants from within before big brother is offended, much like self censoring newspaper editors.

We certainly need Wakil Rakyats with the calibre and dedication of Professor Ramasamy, Dr. Koh Tsu Koon's opponent in Batu Kawan. It is time we had more intellectuals and solid thinkers such as the good professor in Parliament. Professor Ramasamy's presence in Parliament will help to increase the prestige and status of our Dewan Rakyat. Just look at the current BN lot (Hishamudin, Nazri, Samyvelu, etc.) and how they have pushed our Parliament into the gutter. Do I need to say more?

Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, Professor Ramasamy's opponent, may also have a PhD but he is no intellect or thinker - just your typical non-Malay BN politician. Just look at Penang under Dr. Koh's CMship and all the problems that have emerged and continue to persist in the state. Ask any Penangite who knew the old Penang and he'll tell you what a wonderful place Penang WAS. Dr. Koh is a failed state politician who is seeking refuge at the Federal level where he will be amply rewarded for his past loyalty and subservience. He does not even have the power and influence to ensure that his so-called "multi-racial" Gerakan at least appears to be so in its line-up of candidates in the elections. How can such a failed weak individual be able to serve the people of Batu Kawan? Batu Kawan is certainly no showpiece of Gerakan's rule of Penang. Has Dr. Koh ever taken any visitor on a tour of Batu Kawan to "proudly" show the masterpeice he has created?

The choice is crystal clear. Professor Ramasamy is needed in the Dewan Rakyat not just for the sake of the Batu Kawan people but also for the sake of the nation. Let us all do our parts to ensure that Professor Ramasamy wins in Batu Kawan. As noted by an earlier commentator, Professor Ramasamy's students and supporters should go down to Batu Kawan and participate in the door-to-door campaign to ensure his win. Let us all do that. Let us focus our effort and direct it to the most worthy Opposition candidates such as Professor Ramasamy, Lim Guan Eng and Dr. Wan Azizah. Let us be on the ground every day to talk to the folks in Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Tamil and English about why they have to reject BN and their candidates like Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, and vote for the Opposition and their candidates like Professor Ramasamy.
