Consciousness about the growing lack of national unity and the ubiquity of ethnic distrust mark the end to what was to have been a celebratory year for Malaysia.

The country turned 50 on Aug 31 and with it came much reflection and meditation. At the beginning of the year, most parties wanted to contribute to the atmosphere. The Umno-controlled newspaper The New Straits Times had started running a week-long serialisation of the recently published book, The Reluctant Politician: Tun Dr Ismail and His Time.

The aim - according to the decision-making editors - was to kick off the year in a contemplative mode and to remind Malaysians of the country's successful yet troubled past.

In general, anniversaries have an uncanny inclination to induce comparison. Thinking of the past invariably makes one think of the present and the span of time begs questions about how present realities differ from past dreams.

As the year wore on, speculations about an early election began to grow, reflecting a spreading wish for political change. The four years under Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi have not been a peaceful period.

The winds of change died away too quickly. Yet, there was significant change. Otherwise, former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not have come out swinging his fist at his successor administration if that had not been the case.

As far as Dr Mahathir was concerned, Mr Abdullah had betrayed his heritage. Luckily for the government, Dr Mahathir's ill health kept him silent throughout the 50th anniversary year.

Some bright spots in an otherwise darkening sky were the celebrations around Aug 31, the relatively rational atmosphere at this year's Umno general assembly otherwise known for its shocking and racially-provocative events and the sending of the first Malaysian - Dr Sheikh Mustaphar Sheikh Abdul Shukor - into space.

The "developmental corridors" that Mr Abdullah had launched in quick succession to cover most of the peninsula - being excessively ambitious when taken together - merely fanned speculation that elections would soon be called.

Strangely, what the Abdullah administration managed to do over the last four years with its selective, weak and piecemeal reforms was to alienate not only the shrinking Mahathir camp but also those who used to oppose the authoritarian leader.

Politicised appointments of top judges in the past and present continue to exasperate Malaysians who had been hoping for profound changes under Mr Abdullah.

Dubious electoral practices remain in place - the recent constitutional amendment passed for the sole purpose of keeping Mr Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman, the chairman of the Election Commission, in place to watch over the coming polls drew more Malaysians onto the streets in protest.

Sensitive overlaps between the Sharia courts and the civil courts remain, with the government relying on individual court decisions to settle the stream of cases concerning non-Muslims, new Muslims or Muslims who have lost their faith being caught in judicial no-man's land. Significantly, many of the highly-publicised cases have involved Malaysian Indians.

Once the 50th anniversary celebrations were over, contemplation quickly gave way to action. On Sept 26, about 2,000 lawyers and their supporters marched to the Prime Minister's residence calling for proper investigations into allegations of inappropriate appointments of judges.

A widely-publicised demonstration for electoral reforms on Nov 10 was banned the day the Umno general assembly ended, with Mr Abdullah saying that he would not be challenged. Over 30,000 Malaysians of all races, but largely Malays, took to the streets of central Kuala Lumpur that Saturday.

This was followed two weeks later by about the same number of Hindus trying to draw attention to the economic and existential plight of Malaysian Indians.

The draconian Internal Security Act - which allows for detention without trial - was used on five leaders of the Indian demonstration, just as it had been used on at least five people in Johor suspected of sending phone messages inciting ethnic conflict in August, just before the national day celebrations.

On Dec 11, a planned rally outside Parliament House to protest against the constitutional amendment to keep the Election Commission chairman on for another year was stopped by riot police, who closed off all roads leading to the venue. About 27 people were arrested.

Despite some protests being cancelled in deference to governmental pressure, more street rallies by Malaysians are expected in the coming year - aimed at bringing the Abdullah government into open dialogue with non-governmental organisations and other low-level representatives.

It is a pity that this nation, with rich resources, ample land, friendly population and truly Asian cultures had been brought to this low by the greedy politicians. They all can talk big but when the crunch comes, their words have absolutely no meaning. The corruption of these politicians have made this country into a nation that is looked down by the world community.

The big irony is that, THEY KNOW IT!! But they are in the state of denial. They refuse to accept the truth as seen by the Rakyat and they make decsions that are utterly obnoxious. (Can you imagine their stupidity.. that they decided to change Malaysian constitution for ONE MAN!!! That guy from Election Commission, Rashid!!... How low can they go??)

The weak leadership by Pak Lah is another reason for the downslide of this nation. Pak Lah HAS TO GO for the sake of our Rakyat and the next generation.

Malaysians - please think, please vote wisely in the next GE. Your Vote is important so that we can turn this country into what it should be.. A GOLDEN NATION!!

Lets see, ours nation required 3 steps to complete what other nations 1 step. And we should feel glory about it???

Diapers. Preventing dirtying our home when a baby do his pee/poo because he dont know how to talk and cant control them. But a baby should learn to control as he is growing. When a normal kid still wears diapers, other people will laught at him.

Come back to the topic. NEP is a tool for the Malays to learn business or marketing. Everyone should have equal chance to learn (as if a baby became a kid and controled his pee/poo). thats fair. But when someone became rich on this NEP's help and yet he ask for more (as if a kid still wears diapers). Izzit something to be laught at.

My point is, in 50 years, how much Malays have been connected to NEP?? How many Malays with BIG houses and BIG cars, still requires the helps of NEP??? Has the GOV use the NEP for the goods of all Malays OR just a few malays benifits to it??? Thats why public are saying NEP are a tool to enrich the UMNOs rather then help the whole races.

This is what you get when you have 3rd and 4th class people running the country. They will do anything to garner the support of the mass malay folks even at the expense of other religion and races. Why? Because they want to be in power. Why? Because they want to benefit financially from being in power. You thought they wanted to contribute to the country, didn't you.

Pete,

1. We would like to highlight a very important issue that has cropped up lately. There is no extremism in Islam. Islam is a perfect religion as we have already explained in our previous commentary.

Allah s.w.t. says in the Holy Quran Chapter 1: Verse 143 which means "And We have indeed made you (Islamic Ummah) an Ummatan Wasatan so as you can be the witness to (the deeds of) all mankind and so as the Prophet (Muhammad s.a.w.) can be the witness to you (deeds of the Islamic Ummah)".

From this verse, the phrase 'Ummatan Wasatan' means that an ummah who is just and the chosen one. This ummah will be the witness to all the deeds of the people that deviate from the truth be it in this world or in the Hereafter.

2. Also, the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said which means "The best among you are the ones that do things in moderation". Moderation here refers to the characteristic of the 'Ummatan Wasatan' above.

3. From points 1 and 2, it shows that Islam does not preach extremism. In fact, the term "Islamic extremists" is being used in error to refer to "terrorists". The word "extremism" is not being properly used. This is because the people who used them do not understand Islam in a comprehensive way i.e. Islam as a way of life. The analogy here is like the story of the 3 blind men who tried to comprehend the different parts of an elephant. If all Muslims and non-Muslims really understand Islam in a comprehensive way, there would not be any "Islamic extremism" said by anyone in this world.

4. Aside to this issue, we found one flaw in our improvement plan during our review. Thus far, our improvement plan does not include the voters in general. So, in tying up this loose end and to ensure fairness to all, we will also implement Phase 12 - Cleanse the voters of corruption, ignorance of the truth and bad external influence. We do not want the citizens to elect candidates who are known as corrupted, incompetent and associated with the organized crime syndicates/communists candidates. This is to ensure the safety of our country and not to put her in jeopardy in the future.

Going into stealth mode again. Securing communications over long distances through telepathy. Over and out.......

Abdullah is a product of a political system in Malaysia which rewards a person by their blind loyalty to the dominant party, regardless whether he is capable of running the country. Just look the the case of the former railway gate keeper who behaves as if Malaysia owes him a favour and that he did no wrong.

Malaysian politics is more about milking the country at the expense of its people and threatening dissenters at the slightest infraction.

To you all I despair at what lies ahead in 2008!

Notwitstanding this gloomy assessment, I wish you all a blessed CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR!
