Anwar Ibrahim on opposition strategies in Malaysia election PDF Print

Malaysia’s three main opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance Party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia and Parti Keadilan Rakyat have agreed to cooperate with each other in the upcoming March 8th general election.

They have decided to field single candidates in most constituencies in Malaysia to avoid contesting with one another and to provide a viable alternative to the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

In an exclusive interview in Kuala Lumpur with former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from Parti Keadilan Rakyat, RSI’s Shereena Sajeed asked about the extent of the opposition’s preparations for the contest so far.

AI: We negotiated separately with PAS in the Malay heartland, with the DAP in the Chinese areas because we are able to at least engage with them. We have covered almost all seats except for one or two contentious ones with PAS. We’ve virtually resolved everything with the DAP except with Sabah and Sarawak which we hope to resolve by today.

In terms of Keadilan, which areas are you contesting and how many seats are you looking at?

AI: Keadilan is focused mainly on the mixed seats. We are a multi-religious, multi-racial party so therefore we cover the main middle ground. Although we do take a few predominantly Chinese majority seats and also Malay majority seats in the East Coast and the North. I can’t say for sure because discussions are still ongoing but I think we will exceed 70 seats, both in the Peninsular and the Sabah, Sarawak constituencies.

And what issues will Keadilan be focusing on?

AI: The main issue is governance and accountability. We’ve said that due to corruption, mismanagement and lack of leadership, the country has fallen in terms of competitiveness, foreign direct investments and the economy is of course faltering. We cite the example of Singapore, mainly because we started off as a country with relatively slight differences in economic standing. But Singapore has surpassed us in terms of per capita income by almost five times. There is something really wrong either with policy or governance and lack of accountability and massive corruption that has led to this state of affairs.

In your opinion, what are Keadilan’s chances of success this time round?

AI: I think since independence 50 years ago, this is going to be one defining moment in our history. We’ve seen this groundswell of support. My main concern and I need to reiterate this, is the electoral process. The electoral list until now has not been cleared or verified. It’s made so complex. There are lots of reports of phantom voters, voters with no addresses, voters above 100 or 120 years old which seems rather odd to me.

Regarding Nurul, your daughter, there is speculation about whether she is contesting, maybe you can clear that up? What’s your view on her contesting?

AI: As a party leader, Azizah (Anwar’s wife) of course wouldn’t say no but as a mother, she has a lot of misgivings. I have a more neutral stance on that, allowing her to decide for herself. Right now, frankly we’re not terribly keen because Azizah is involved and so am I. But as always, particularly in the KL neighbourhood, the pressure is very strong so I am leaving it to her. I find it very difficult for her. She always tells me, “Papa, don’t burden me. Don’t force me to decide. We’ll have to decide together”. She’s not too keen on it but I can sense that she is also changing because she’s listening to a lot of people and she’s been on the ground for some time.

If Keadilan can be the go in between for DAP and PAS, as well as taking it further after the general election then we have hope for a much needed dual party democratic system. The first hurdle is to secure more than 1/3 of the parliamentary seats, and be the laternatives voices and just being branded as opposition.

It is time to get the so called Barisan Rakyat strategy in place to win the first major battle of getting at least more than 1/3 of the parliamentary seats. The time is now as many young voters as well as the matured citizens of the country are looking for an alternative representation so that corruption and abuse of power can be curbed and eventually reduce to bare minimum.

It looks like Anwar may be the natural leader to the Party Rakyat and has to demonstrate the qualities and sincerity to represente the voters who are against the BN's policies and rule.

Time for change indeed.

...this is going to be one defining moment in our history

I have to agree with DSAI. This is it, We, collectively, CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!

And I've come around from being wary of DSAI, to actually egging him on towards taking the lead in forging the alliance among the Opposition parties. And the fear I have for DSAI being in the same clothes as the UMNO fellas is tapered somewhat by the fact that if we really can effect the change this GE, we can do it again the next one. So, if DSAI does not live up to our expectations, we can always dump him come the next GE.

So, right now, I'm game for giving him and the rest of the opposition a chance. Give them our votes.

THE TIME HAS COME. THE TIME IS NOW !

Spoken like a true leader. Mr. Ibrahim is the right choice to lead Malaysia. An intellect who stands for 'Democracy' and one who can free Malaysia from the Apartheid Democracy so to speak.

Malaysia needs a radical change for the country to move forward.
Vote for Mr.Ibrahim's led opposition party and give him the required two thirds majority. To all Malaysians, irrespective of race, colour and creed. This is your opportunity to restore your country's integrity globally as well as domestically.

HELP TO SAVE MALAYSIA CAMPAIGN;

1. Free Malaysia from the clutches of Corruption.

2. Clean up the corrupted and tainted Judiciary.

3. Revamp the entire Police Force and Anti Corruption Agency(ACA), all riddled with corruption.

On the lighter side ;-) the current ACA should be named just as 'CA' or Corruption Agency and their job is to catch those whom are not corrupted...Hmm, I wonder if you will find any? :-D

4. Be rid of all the arrogant tyrants and so called dictators posing as leaders, they failed to realise that they were voted in by the people.

5. Make Malaysia a 'Scandal' free country, shameful that several Ministers are/were involved, while one was dumb enough to get caught by allowing lust to empower him, the other was smart enough to have it blown away.

6. Restore Democracy with equality for all races.

7. Get the Economy going again, the exsisting economic policies should be amended to suit the betterment of every race.

8. Re-introduce English as the medium of instruction in schools for all Malaysians.

9.To ensure freedom of the press and media.

Vote for the Opposition Party led by Mr.Ibrahim for a bright future for all Malaysians! Give Mr.Ibrahim and his Party the chance to help save Malaysia. Peace and Harmony forever!!!

As of today, I have no doubt in my mind that the opposition can win 55 seats at least, and perhaps 68 seats at best.

Let ‘Barisan Rakyat’ take on BN this time
R Rama Chandran | Feb 20, 08 3:38pm

The time has now come for race-based political parties to shed racial and religious labels from their objectives. Instead, they must stand for egalitarian concepts, sound economic principles,….

Here is my 2 cents of advice for the smart candidate how to pull in more voters from the civil service :

Prmoise (only ok smilies/grin.gif )

1. You can come to work in the morning clock in and then take 2 hours off for breakfast.
2. You are encouraged to go out as a group of 10 or more for the breakfast so that you get more pahala like in sembhayang jamaath.
3. We accept civil servants are master race and rakyat the hamba.
4. Never mind you are a useless fart, but when you retire we guarantee A Datok Title.
5. When you reach 45 years of age, you qualify for kick backs from buying a pencil to buying a submarine and you can buy sarong batik in advance and send the bill to treasury for your retirement.
6. After retirement you will still get the annual performance bonus because you alone made Malaysia today a great nation.

Ok guys others can fill in your bright ideas to attract votes from the civil servants.
