IPOH: After months of wrangling, the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) have finally agreed on seats that would allow straight fights against the Barisan Nasional.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party would contest in seven parliamentary and 18 state seats. “Our understanding is to ensure one-on-one fights and deny Barisan a two-thirds majority,” he told a press conference with PKR. Among those present were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Perak PKR acting chairman Zulkifli Ibrahim. The parliamentary seats which the DAP will contest are Ipoh Timor, Ipoh Barat, Batu Gajah, Taiping, Kampar, Beruas and Telok Intan. The state seats are Tebing Tinggi, Pasir Pinji, Canning, Buntong, Bercham, Kepayang, Tronoh, Menglembu, Jelapang, Pokok Assam, Aulong, Jalong, Keranji, Malim Nawar, Pantai Remis, Sitiawan, Pasir Berdamar and Sungkai. Perak has 24 parliamentary and 59 state seats. Guan Eng said the respective opposition parties would announce their candidates later. Anwar, who declined to reveal PKR seats pending an agreement to be signed with PAS, said the DAP areas would not overlap with PAS. Asked about Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s intention to contest in the Sungai Siput parliamentary and Jalong state seats, Guan Eng said the DAP would deal with that “when it arises”. Guan Eng added that it was inappropriate to discuss the issue when PSM was not present. - Star
