Shameless Political Partisanship of Media: The Fong Coverage PDF Print

Commentary by Dr. Lim Teck Ghee

PO KUAN CRIES OFF”; “Fong drops a bomb”, screamed the headlines of the two major papers in the country yesterday.

Most readers would have wondered what earth shattering event had taken place to warrant such eye catching coverage. In fact, just glancing at the ‘bomb-drop’ headline would have led to consternation amongst readers that someone in the country was so demoralized by the way the country was run that she had decided to resort to violence or terrorism to put her message out.

Reading further beyond the headlines, the front page hot news event turned out to be of a decision by the Batu Gajah parliamentary representative not to contest in the coming elections. Such a pull-out of a comparable Barisan Nasional party candidate at most would have resulted in a few lines buried in the middle pages of the same papers. Interesting news but hardly warranting the sensationalistic coverage.

So what was the angle the newspapers were targeting the reader. The main message is of the main opposition party in disarray and therefore unworthy of the trust and confidence of voters. This was a dagger aimed directly at the electorate. It also had a subtle sub-plot of creating confusion and division within the party and its supporters.

Unfortunately for the spin doctors manipulating this story, this attempt at brainwashing is not working. As the human interest aspects of the story unfold, the public will increasingly recognize the tremendous personal sacrifices that opposition party representatives – especially women - have to make when they stand up in the interests of the public and the many difficulties they encounter in serving the cause of democracy. This particular attempt at news spinning deserves to backfire badly.

In the coming days, we can expect from the mainstream newspapers, radio and television networks a steady stream of negative reporting against all the opposition parties. Exaggeration, propaganda and misinformation about the goodness, blessings and great achievements of the Barisan Nasional government alone are not regarded as sufficient to sway the public to vote against the opposition. Spinning and distortion of news about the opposition parties must be provided in equal measure - if not at a more frenzied level - to ensure a resounding Barisan Nasional victory.

How does this coverage reflect on journalistic norms and values? One of the most discerning of our journalists in a commentary piece titled “Cashing in for the elections” has written on how spin doctoring becomes the flavour of the month during the election season and of the material incentives held out for journalists who participate. He wrote

Having covered three elections, I can vouch that if one wants to make an extra buck or even forward one’s personal agenda through political hopefuls, this is the time. The ang pows and brown envelops with wads of cash being handed out to campaign workers, voters, and yes – sadly , some journalists – are regular scenes which of course do not make it to the news pages. Those who decline these offerings have the benefit of a good night’s sleep and can write with a clear conscience.”

He ended his column by noting:

Well, that’s the game these days. It will be a sad day indeed if voters and those who are supposedly representatives of the Fourth Estate allow instant gratification to distort their view of the bigger picture. Our future is not for barter and the sooner everyone realizes that, we will be able to look our children in the eye and tell them we made the right choices for their future.”

Our newspaper editors and colleagues at senior management level are playing a much bigger game and for larger personal stakes that the lowly and middle level journalists accosted by individual politicians. I wonder what stories they tell their children to justify the news stories they are peddling and hope they can sleep better at night during this period or whenever they ply their trade.

LIM KIT SIANG said he allowed Fong Po Kuan to contest her Batu Gajah's seat, and Fong said someone forced her to move to other places. Lim KS in Sin Chew Jit poh said he, "Sek Sei Mau" (CAntonese - I ate dead cat).

I think there might be a huge misunderstanding...

The sad thing is that this news spinning by the mainstream media attracts most of their target audience. Seriously, how many of "us" out there?? The fact that "our" numbers are not enough to deny the BN goons another 2/3 majority really make me sick. But the fight will go on. Hopefully, this time, "we" could send more of "our" voices in the house.

Fight till the end....and I hope for good health for years to come to enable me to carry on.

Well said Dr Lim.
Malaysian journalists have to sell their souls and even prostitute themselves for the monthly pay packet. It is for this reason I advised my two children, from an early age, to shun this profession.
Our senior editors and journalists have played a great part for the rot this country is in.
Yesterday the Star had an article on the sorry state the Judiciary. Now what did this paper do to expose the rot when it happened in the initial stages? What did this newspapers do to expose corruption in high places? What did they do to expose immoral leaders? They propped up a corrupt, immoral regime.
The newspapers' election coverage insult our intelligence everyday. The news papers mock us everyday with their filthy coverage. Even Wee Choo Kiong was given page three treatment just because he had something negative about the DAP.
Every negative Opposition news is given front page or page lead treatment.
Anyway, I look at journalists as lepers. What is journalism without a conscience?

Need I say more, that is the modus operandi of all government controlled media, from tv,radio up to printed media.
If you ask me, the ladies have chosen a wrong channel to voice their dissatisfaction!
Which is very very unfortunate.
Already there is lack of time to prep for the election, now there have this unwarranted issue to deal with as it is brought to the open at an inconsiderate time!
Hope the rakyat, will not take this as a sign of opposition weakness as it is a isolated case. The media will spin, just like gasing but we MUST remain focused.
Just a word of advice, to save you the trouble, don't buy papers, and don't watch news. But suprisingly, NTV7 seem to have more airtime for DAP. Is it a gimic to spin their views in favour of BN?
Don't know, hope all turns out well this 8th March!

News is that DAP is going all out to make sure Ms. Fong does defend her seat. What'll the headlines be then? Another obvious case of the BN-controlled mainstream media making a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to issues within opposition parties....what about coverage of MIC or UMNO's internal problems. Understand some incumbent Sabah YBs who feel they may not be re-nominated by Musa Aman are camping in KL/Putrajaya to try to get PM or KJ to overrule Musa Aman. MIC having problems with candidature in certain areas e.g. Batu Caves. Nothing in the mainstream media.

I don't care of what Mr. Johan, Steven or Dr. Farish is saying about the BN's leadership sucessor. It is irrelevant to me. I m only interested in talking the next successor would come from the oppostion (DSAI and the likes. Can we not have this comemnentator to come out trump and promoting the future leaders from BA instead?

My advice is THE RIGHTEOUS ONE WILL PREVAIL for this coming election. We as malaysian and in a multi-racial country TO CONDEMN the RACIST representive in power. No more for this evil minded people to represent the RAKYAT. We don't need this bunch of parasite. We need someone who can bring development to our beloved nation and to increase our standard of living. We want our nation to progress with harmony in our country.

When I read that the EC chairman's asked the media to give equal coverage to all political parties, I was wondering how is it possible. But now I know.

It means equal amount of paper space...duh!

So, one big propaganda frontpage for BN will be balanced with one negative frontpage for the opposition. Who would have thought that the opposition will be given a frontpage billing....huh!

It's equal what?!
Is it fair?
Well...that's another story all together.

I felt so good today to have had the power to deny a major english daily a RM 50 K advertisment contract to them. I wonder how their reporters face their freinds to have unable to right the real report. When i was young i told that its a well respected job to be a reporter. Nowadays they have lost their dignity. I guess they also feel the shame too. Many back hand staff of them dont seem to wear their tags when their out for lucnh. Kesian!
