Indonesia’s Deputy A-G and top cop resign in corruption scandal PDF Print

(The Star) - Two of Indonesia’s leading law enforcement officials suddenly stepped down Thursday to soothe a tide of public rage over an escalating corruption scandal that has forced intervention by the president.

Deputy Attorney-General Abdul Hakim Ritonga and Gen. Susno Duadji, the head of national police investigations, resigned after being named in wiretaps this week that exposed a plot to undermine the Corruption Eradication Commission.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reporters he asked for their resignations. But he did not call for their arrests, or condemn their actions.

The men were scheduled to be questioned by a special fact-finding team with no power to initiate criminal charges.

The resignations -- virtually unheard of in Javanese culture -- were the culmination of a months-long battle between the top anti-graft agency and rival police and prosecutors in Indonesia, which is regularly ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world.

The case has fueled opposition to the police and poses a serious challenge to Yudhoyono’s newly installed government. He was re-elected in July for another five-year term in the Muslim-majority nation of 235 million.

The commission has been key to Indonesia’s efforts to wipe out a culture of corruption since the downfall in 1998 of late dictator Suharto. His 32-year rule was marred by human rights violations, cronyism and nepotism that held back economic development and continues to scares away potential investors.

Public outrage was sparked by the arrest last week of two deputies at the agency, known by its Indonesian acronym KPK. They were released after hundreds of thousands of Internet users signed a petition in their support on Facebook and protests were held across the main island, Java.

Ritonga and Gen. Duadji were named in wiretaps aired on live television this week in which bribes of hundreds of thousands of dollars and a plot to frame KPK deputies Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto were exposed.

Although Chandra and Bibit have since been released, they still face charges of abuse of power for improperly issuing a travel ban against a corruption suspect and allegedly hampering investigations by talking to the media.

Yudhoyono, a 60-year-old former general who was re-elected in July, had been widely credited for the success of the anti-corruption campaign during his first term in office. Scores of corrupt politicians, entrepreneurs and law enforcement officials were tried and convicted, including the father-in-law of one of the president’s sons.

The latest crisis poses a threat to his counter-corruption credentials and the reputation of Indonesia’s already poorly regarded judiciary. -- AP

Was told that if Najib implements anti corrupt practice as per Indonesia, there would not be any cabinet members left and half the top civil servants would be in jail.

You can say on this comparison Malaysia falls far behind Indonesia. The more the corrupt in Malaysia, the longer they sit on their chairs. This is because the Barisan regime itself is so much inflicted with corruption that it would kill itself if these top men and women were to resign on their own accord. This is what 1Malaysia is essentially all about. And it started with the days of the Tun.

Indonesia ranked as the most corrupt, maybe. I think Malaysia is worse.

Bravo, at least in Indionesia, they have conscience which is unlike in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, even if we kick the AG and IGP, they won't go. That makes a lot of difference.

Even a country like Indonesia is more transparent than Malaysia! Najis should be so ashamed of himself and start to learn a trick or two from Susilo on how to be a true and clean leader! Well, in Malaysia everything is ok, murder ok, corruption ok, apa lan--au pun boleh as long as you are on the right side! Thats where the slogan Malaysia Boleh comes about! Really TNS! smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif

...months-long battle between the top anti-graft agency and rival police and prosecutors in Indonesia..

___________________________________

See? Their Anti-Corruption agency and their police are rivals meaning they check ech other. Ours are in cahoots, along with the judges and election commissions not to mention the top echelon of the civil servants and some NGOs. So..while Indonesia is moving foward, Malaysia is back-pedalling rather fast.

Hundreds of thousands signed a petition on Facebook in support of the 2 anti-corruption agency deputies.

We should do the same and send our petition to remove all the Mana Ada Corruption Commission officers to the idiot Najis and see what he's gonna do smilies/cheesy.gif

Surely they have to resign as these Indonesian counterparts do not have skins of Seladang hides's thickness of our AG, IGP and DG of MACC.

The Indons did not know that after all the corrupion works, make one or two trips to Mekah for circumbulation and everything is cleansed. The Malaysians know.

kunta-kinte :

It did snow in Malaysia many years ago in the state of Selangor somewhere in Bukit Chahaya. It was very brief ! Very soon it became very suitable to test C4 blastings !! Bones of various DNA mixes were recently recovered somewhere nearby. There were also "spring and autumn conditions". Of course needless to mention that we experience "summer" all year round!

TOYO will soon be able to write about his "DEVELOPED" state while in Sungai Buluh RESORT !!!

Very soon all our women folks will flock to Indonesia and so will our men folks, too , to work as maids and construction workers .

BUT WHEN PR BECOMES THE GOMEN then all UMNO/BN goons will be sent to INDIA to build roads !!!

In Indonesia, the Corruption Eradication Commission is fighting against the 2 most corrupted institutions, i.e. the police and attorney general. It is hated by the corruptors and loved by the people.
In Malaysia, MACC, the police and attorney general are sleeping in the same bed. It is loved by the corruptors and hated by the people.
Indonesia is one notch above Malaysia.
Dear Najib, please take a leaf from president Susilo before the Malaysian people bring you down on your knees.

SBY is a good man and not a #1Thief, #1Liar nor #1Murderer. That makes a lot of difference.

I am happy for the Indonesian people. It is a 25 years wish coming true for me.

I wish SBY every success in uplifting the lives of his poor people.

It really saddens me to see that our neighbouring countries are making progress - some slower some faster, but nevertheless making progress. But Malaysia (so blessed in so many ways) seems to be regressing - in almost every area compared to our neighbours - under the present govt. Perhaps the Rakyat need to intervene and make our voice be heard, "enough is enough, we want change for the better"
