BN cannot be expected to do Pakatan states any favours PDF Print

BN is not likely to drop its policy of blocking funds from filtering down to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) states, especially with the opposition in such a strong position.

By Leslie Lau, The Malaysian Insider

It is a time-honoured tradition in Malaysian politics for the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government not to allow hard cash in the hands of any opposition state.

And Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s half-hearted move on the Kelantan oil royalty claim is testament to BN’s attitude.

BN’s rule is based on what supporters call “development politics.”

If cash, such as that claimed by PAS for extracting oil in Kelantan, was dispersed to the state government, BN would lose the most significant leverage it has over voters.

The BN federal government says it will pay Kelantan “goodwill payment” for oil extracted in its waters but PAS lawmakers are disputing it, saying it is akin to receiving alms instead of rightful oil royalty.

Najib told Parliament yesterday that Kelantan has no right to claim for royalties from national oil company Petronas since oil was extracted beyond the state’s waters, similar to the situation in Terengganu.

But PAS is arguing that Terengganu has actually been receiving oil royalties and not the “goodwill payment.”

After PAS won Terengganu the federal government did the same thing with the oil-rich neighbour of Kelantan.

Wang Ehsan, similar to the “goodwill payment” being offered now to Kelantan, was distributed via federal government projects in the state.

The PAS state government filed a lawsuit against the federal government but this case is now in the process of being dropped as Terengganu is now under BN control.

BN is not likely to drop its policy of blocking funds from filtering down to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) states, especially with the opposition in such a strong position.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has been complaining about this almost from Day One of his administration.

But BN is banking on the fact that few voters realise or are bothered by the fact that state governments have access to very little revenue.

States are largely dependent on federal funds for infrastructure development.

And for PR men like Lim, voters may end up blaming his government for a lack of any initiatives.

Which is the point of controlling the funds.

The message to voters from such policies is clear — vote for BN and life is better.

Such a strategy worked well for BN especially when corruption was kept at a tolerable level and the economy was humming along.

But with corruption reaching an alarming rate and leakages in the economy through poor administration costing the country heavily, the BN government is finding it tough going convincing voters that it can bring them a better life.

Did people really think he was going to give PAS money? The fact is this move is PATHETIC on Najib part. He is short of money to spend and he is throwing a big sum to a state he cannot win. He is wimping out on the demands of the warlords. He is has a strategy to spend into the heartland of PAS and tear them apart, I can still respect it but its not that. Its just pathetic and the 'wang ehsan' excuse thing is even more wimpy and pathetic and he pretending that its not makes him A BIG LOSER!!

If UMNO/BN (read Najib) refuses to honour federalism will cessation from Malaysia by all PR-ruled states heal the ill? Sometimes it's worth threatening political idiots in such a manner.

Looking at the state of affair and corruption in the country, don't expect any fund from Federal Government. Better to highlight all the corruptions to remind the Rakyat (and by mouth to mouth) the millions and billions of ringgit gone to waste which could have been use to help the Rakyat. To keep highlighting all injustice, Police harassment the Racial enthics of Politician (ie Cow head incident, Keris, detaining or Teresa Kok), video of Mara Student defending Bumi as prince of land and non Malays are guest, backward education system, 1Toilet, etc, etc, etc.

Please keep up the momentum, get friends who have not register to vote to do so, talk to colleague in work place and tell them the corruption and injustice. Be rewarded with a better Malaysia after the next GE. Don't let the corrupt and racist hijack this country.

DAP said RM3bil taxes collected from Penang, yet the state government only gets RM127 mil in return. Selangor pays RM16bil, gets only RM247mil.

We don't expect BN government to "do favours" for PR governments. But think of what taxpayers in Penang and Selangor feels when BN discriminates in this fashion in the name of political tradition. It's all about fairness.

Since I am born, living, and working in the Selangor, opposition state, I would like to pay my income tax(all taxes) to PR.

UMNO/BN, you think our tax money is your piggy bank. UMNO is a pure munafiq.

We should boycott paying tax until PR takes over the Federal.

I had to work it out, the amount of tax the Selangor government recieves from the Federal government as a percentage of the total amount paid to the Feds by the people of Selangor is 1.55%

I feel ill, how can any government do that to it's people?

PR shpuld set up a website and record all the states' entitlements that were with-held by BN from the people of the states. Also should be recorded on the website should be the total taxes and revenue collected by the Federal Government (BN) from these states.

Once the people of these states gets to know about the actual real situation, public discontentment will surface and the Federal Government will have to deal with the wrath of the taxpayers of the relevant states!

Knowledge is power and power are prime movers of mountains. Give knowledge to the people and the people will exercise their people power to demand their rightful entitlement. Do not keep the people in the dark and fight a lone battle. Get the people behind you to push for justice!

People power always works wonders against politicians!

Obviously UMNO treats taxpayers' money as its own, and therefore it indulges in selective development. Malaysia is a selective country : selective prosecution, selective development, etc.

I find the BN govt to be small minded and very unmagnimous. If Pakatan comes to federal power and treated BN the same how would they feel?
On the other hand taxpayers in Pakatan states can stop paying tax to the federal govt since they are not getting what they paid for.

I object to the writer's use of language!
No one expects to do the BN to do any favours for the PR states!
But it is morally wrong to deny the PR states their devewlopment funding - this is the state of our country's democracy!!
The federal government is only the custodian of the rakyat's money, it is not the UMNOputras money!!
