(The Star) - Former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin was not charged at the Gombak Timur Lower Syariah Court despite having to wait for nearly three hours.

He was instead issued with a second police bond as a notice for the Selangor Religious Affairs Department (Jais) to question him at a later date.

The prominent Islamic scholar, who had been told to be present in court yesterday, waited from 9am with a crowd of about 50 supporters and well-wishers – including social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and several Opposition MPs – had been told to be present after being detained by Jais enforcement officers on Sunday.

However, no officers from Jais came to the court yesterday.

Long wait: Dr Mohd Asri speaking to reporters as he waited for nearly three hours at the Gombak Timur Lower Syariah Court Monday.

“I don’t understand why I have been treated like this. I am a former mufti. I also have a PhD in Islamic studies from the IIU. I tutor PhD and Masters’ students in my classes (USM). Why am I being treated like this?

“I hope this becomes a point for the Government to amend the laws for better human rights and more freedom of speech,” he told reporters after being issued the bond.

“There is a hidden hand behind this as there are people who don’t want me to give a speech here in Selangor,” he added.

Dr Mohd Asri was expected to be charged under Section 119 of the Selangor Islamic Administra- tion Enactment for preaching without the state’s permission (tauliah) at a private house in Taman Sri Ukay in Gombak to a crowd of 500 friends and relatives on Sunday.

He was picked up by some 25 Jais officers and 30 policemen at 9.45pm on Sunday despite attempts by several Opposition MPs to negotiate with officers, and was later brought to Keramat police station to assist in Jais’ investigations.

Jais director Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi said Dr Mohd Asri would be charged as soon as the investigation papers were ready, adding that the date had yet to be determined.

“He came to Selangor and we have our own laws here and he (Dr Mohd Asri) has to respect them,” he said, adding that it was necessary for one to make an application and attend an interview before being accredited by Jais to preach in Selangor.

“This is the requirement even if one wants to give a talk on Islam at a private residence,” he told a press conference which was attended by Selangor Mufti Datuk Seri Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid.

Mohammed Khusrin said police had to be called in because several elected representatives had tried to prevent the officers from making the arrest.

However, he denied that Dr Mohd Asri was detained for allegedly propagating the Wahabi doctrine among his supporters.

He added that Jais officers had moved in on Dr Mohd Asri based on complaints and memorandums received from local residents over the last few years.

He said the department would investigate Dr Mohd Asri’s speech as well as allegations that he was propagating the Wahabi doctrine.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said he believed that Jais was professional enough to carry out a free, fair and transparent probe.

“I know the department will be able to carry out a fair investigation and look at all angles to ensure that justice is served not only to the people but also to Datuk Asri,” said Khalid in a statement yesterday.

He said that the state had been informed of the incident.

Khalid said the department should explain to the public about the matter and the nature of the arrest, and pointed out that it had the authority on Islamic matters that were independent of the state government.

This is the problem of the Islamic World. You take everything literally and swallow it like an anaconda without questioning it. Many moons ago during the 16th century EDUCATION was not available. Laws were made using God as the reason for people to follow to establish a homogeneous society. The Fear Factor was used to ensure people followed rules and laws to prevent crime. And was used over and over again to stamp these laws. He became a stamp and along the away many supposed religious leaders changed these laws to suit the time and their personal gain to establish control over the people. Again hey used God as the STAMP.
Today although we have education, it is different. Education is used to brainwash the followers..not to question. As such we have SECOND HAND information about God handed down by some supposed enlightened religious leader who claims he received messages from the divine. The followers do not question these truths and do not use their God given brains to find God as he is and what he is. Education should make us realize that the information we receive from second party is to be questioned and not swallowed whole like a python. Instead we should use this to find out how we can approach a God who exists and wants to exist peacefully and well sharing the love he gave with others he has created. We have to understand why it is not right for us do do certain things and why it is not right using the eyes of God...not by some preacher who hammers hell into us. Getting to know God and close to God is not following a packaged "magee mee"
religion be it wahabi or what ha be. And for this to happen followers must be told to question these truths and find for themselves a way to understand what God wants not what the preacher wants........ Then religion will have meaning...otherwise we have to use 16th century laws. And we have to come up with bathing together rubbish to strengthen marriages...or men marrying single mothers for altruistic reasons to be rewarded by the state....bloody nonsense..
It boils down the the ultimate question..of are we doing any good deed through he eyes of God as he has given so much of goodness..or are we doing it because of lust or reward....Please let us not accept a SECOND HAND GOD.

Everything in Malaysia seems to be in REVERSE gear these days. Tangkap first, charge later. How come? Because they are sh*tscared of any body who dare question their authority, that's why! BN is getting real paranoid and is even worried about their own shadow. And they know nuts about the law as they reverse engineer the charges after questioning the victim. And if they can't find anything on them, they look for high buildings - why do you think the twin Towers were built?

This is an old tactic - bog good people down with lawsuits and false accusations. Worry them and slow them down, even threaten them with loss of freedom or loss of property.

Jais just like BN is lawless. The people in charge do not fear God. They are only using God's name in vain to serve their purpose only. No one can understand their actions because there is no justification except to show might and power and no one understands their motives except themselves and God of course who sees their hearts. When people are appointed because of their connections instead of qualifications everything become huru hara

The Holey Spooks (JAIS) are alive 'n well and just in time to celebrate Halloween, albeit a day late (typical isn't it ?!!) ! Maybe Dr. Asri's costume was not "Halloween" enough for JAIS !!

But seriously, I believe that Dr. Asri is a true blue Muslim bent on preaching pure Islamic beliefs and that is a threat to these Utterly Moronic Nazi Organization backed "Islamic" NGOs as they would be seen for what they are; abusing Islam for their own selfish gain, and oppressing the Rakyat while plundering Malaysia, and trying to convince us (and themselves) that they are good Muslims (of course Allah Knows otherwise already).

Looks like these "Islamic NGOs" are the Gestapo and SS Unit of the Utterly Moronic Nazi Organization, and they have studied well their god's (Adolf Hitler) ideology & methodology !!

This a prime example of how SOME muslims use Religion to stifle freedom of associations and/or freedom of speech. Just imagine for a moment how life would be if everyone was governed by Sharia Law.
Powers of organisation like JAIS must be curtailed other this country will not be fit for even Muslims to live in.

He came to Selangor and we have our own laws here and he (Dr Mohd Asri) has to respect them - JAIS had just proven Islam is not universal. In one state you can do this and in another state you cannot do this, and we can assume going by their thinking Islam will be different in other countries. Is the beginning of talibanism? Make your own rules and gloat about it!

Jais and director Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi should heed that we will all be questioned by God sooner or later. Sooner or later you will realize that protecting your (overpaid) salary won't amount to much.

I give religious talk to my children everynight in my house. Do I need a 'tauliah' from Islamic Department? It seems I do!! What if I fail the 'test' to get a 'tauliah'? I wouldn't be able to guide my children on Islam. And yet,by the holy Quran, I am duty bound as a muslim father to guide my children away from the path to Hell! The holy Quran did not say I need a 'tauliah'. Help! somebody?
