Gerakan — no home in its heart, no cause of its own PDF Print

By Baradan Kuppusamy, The Malaysian Insider

Gerakan is in deep despair as the party bravely soldiers on to find new purpose in life after its massive defeat in Election 2008 when it lost Penang, the crown jewel of the Barisan Nasional (BN) member.

But up to now, it has failed to reinvent itself, find a niche, or elect new and dynamic leaders to survive in a new age.

The issue is simple – after such a massive defeat, can Gerakan survive and find new purpose?

The consensus among influential political chat groups on the Internet and mainstream political commentators is to write-off Gerakan.

Some have already lowered Gerakan into the coffin, casting the party into political oblivion.

But Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in a stirring speech at the Gerakan AGM yesterday, tried hard to raise the party's spirits.

He asked delegates whether they had the gumption to rise from defeat.

But stirring speech or not, there is little for Gerakan to look forward to with the Princeton-educated Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon heading the leadership and past luminaries like Dr Lim Kheng Yaik pushing from behind.

In a previous era, Gerakan was admired as the conscience of BN.

But that gentlemanly-period is over and has been replaced with hardball politics unfamiliar to Gerakan and its leaders.

Gerakan had started as an “intellectual” party offering an egalitarian, multi-cultural platform to Malaysians but was gradually co-opted into BN by the then-prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak.

In BN, Gerakan played a modest role as a critic and conscience of the coalition.

But as Umno’s excesses grew and the party openly flaunted its Ketuanan Melayu ideology, Gerakan chose to remain silent and gave up on its role as champions of equality and egalitarianism.

This is the 5th column of the 1Malaysia blitzkrieg. UMNO backbencher attacks KTK, Kuppu attacks Gerakan. What gives? Are these attacks real? Or just to seduce you guys back into the folds of UMNO?

Gerakan is like that girl who was born full of ideals, wanting a fantastic career and prince charming at the same time. Then she graduated, she woke up to the reality that a career is hard and a price charming doubly so. Since she had a career going, she started be more realistic about a husband and married a loser. Then she finds out that the career she wanted isn't what its all cracked up to be and the loser husband is too much to bear. But afraid her friends and family would laugh at her she refused to admit she got it all wrong and keep denying everything. For her, as with Gerakan, she has to get fired and her husband dump her until she wakes up to the reality..

This analogy says a lot about KTK, if you get what I mean..

Is Gerakan in deep despair or DEAD? Gerakan is a Ghost party or Ghost having a party. We (RAKYAT) bury those ***ckers more than a year ago. What's left is the scent of the caucus that usually come alive when the caucus begin to rot.

Gerakan has been in control of Penang from 1969 till 2008. Looked at what has happened to Penang over nearly 40 years of rule? The traffic is appalling, the mass transport is a mess which explains why the road is perpetually congested. That is 40 years of GERAKAN rule !!!! smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif

Gerakan will never be raise from the coffin unless they change a more dynamic leader. with KSK still as president, then there is no more hope and past histroy show this Gerakn president is a coward, no balls, and cannot speak for malaysian issue,Penang issue, and who is interested only to be a backdoor minister.

Please, let's not talk about Mic,Mca, PPP and Gerakan because they will quickly and surely disappear from the political scene in a short while.

The present crop of political leaders do not have that 'ooomp' to really lead the minority races except to enrich themselves being underdogs to the Umno masters.
No one will drop a tear for them.

Gerakan and MCA, both parties were already gone, as far as we are concern. They were lead by leaders from the bastards. All fighting for their own benefits. BUAT MALU BANGSA SAHAJA. Oh.... lupa, MIC PUN SERUPA
