Marina Mahathir

Folks, you may have heard/read the latest dramatics regarding the arrest of Dr Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin, former Mufti Perlis.

Last night he called me to say that as he was speaking to a group of people at a friend's house in Ampang, a group from JAIS came and wanted to arrest him. They brought along the police but none of them had warrants. The people in the house which included some MPs and lawyers tried to negotiate with the police but eventually around midnight or so, he was taken to the Ulu Kelang Police Station.

But at the station, nothing much was done because it seemed that nobody really knew what the offence was. Eventually they released him 'dengan jaminan' and gave him a document (sorry I don't know the exact terminology) which said that he was being charged under Section 119 of the Selangor Religious Enactment which basically says you can't teach Islam without being certified. He had to appear at the Mahkamah Syariah Gombak this morning at 9am. At the top of the document, the police had hand-written 'Arahan JAIS'.

Why is the Police doing all these senseless things at this time? Why is ruling government out to silence opinion makers and preventing people from speaking their mind?

It is because the government is not doing well and fearful of criticisms. It is afraid that criticisms will damage its chances of being re-elected. It is caring about holding on to power than serving the people.

UMNO governmetn is acting out of FEAR - fear of losing power, losing votes, losing controls over constituents, suporters through the voices of dissenting opinions. UMNO wants to continue its rule over the country by controling the minds of the people.

This is the last resort of UMNO. But this unsophisticated strategy will back fire. In order to rule legitimately, it is essential to win the hearts and minds of the voters and not just to control the minds. Malaysian voters are smart enough to make the distinction between mind control and the true situation.

Regardless of UMNO's attempt to manipulate the media and control dissemination of information, using threats and intimidation to silence the voices of dissent, the Internet generation will find out the truth about UMNO's performance and its motives. It is dealing with a savvy generation which is not easily fooled.

Malaysians may be fearful of the Police or afraid to go to jail or face the draconian ISA charges, but no government can succeed by constant policing its own citizens out of fear.
Moreover, the more the government tries to bottle up public sentiments, the more pressure will build. Eventually, more force will come up against the government.

This is the type of high-handedness that leads to distrust of the faith. This man of God, Dr. Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin was a State Mufti, one percieved as a moderate. I am sure he is a certified and well qualified person to speak about the religion. Kafirs is even more confused than ever ... how to embrace the faith? Soon students also need to be certified to speak in an elocution contest. Talking about freedom of speech!

MM ,
Consider Dr. Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin as fortunate. At least He has many lawyers, politicians , NGO , and even the general public to defend him.

I was told many small time employers were slapped with hefty fines by some Gomen Departments for just a small mistake or sometimes a non-existance offend .

If they failed to pay up within the stipulated period , they were threatened to appear in courts for a fine of upto half a million ringgit plus a jailed sentence of upto a few years.

If they don't pay up , who is going to defend them ?

Maybe JAIS is a bunch of illiterate numbskulls who couldn't even write properly and expected someone from high above to do it for them? Ohhh... I was just imagining .... How far I was wrong actually from the truth about Jais? I bet those morons couldn't spell their own names correctly! Hahaha! What a stupid department! How wasteful! All of those morons should be reassigned to be toilet cleaners and be given a daily wage of nothing more than RM12! Hahahaha! Worthless animals! smilies/grin.gif
