BN must make up its mind once and for all.  Does it still want to put up the pretence that Malaysia is a democracy?  If it does, should it continue to bombard our senses with such disgusting scenes and bare to the world the ugly truth of what Malaysia truly is?

By Kim Quek

After the nonsensical assembly sitting in Perak on Oct 28, Barisan Nasional should deeply reflect whether it is worthwhile to prolong its farcical rule in the Silver State.

To say the least, the session was a complete wash out.

First, police control and intervention inside and outside the assembly was so heavy and so overpowering that it has completely destroyed the image of our legislature as an independent and the highest institution in our system of government.

Second, the slip-shot manner with which BN’s budget motion was rushed through makes us wonder whether the budget was legally approved.

Let us start with the budget approval.

BN’s Mentri Besar Zambry Kadir started his budget speech at 1120 hrs, and thirty minutes later, he had not only completed his speech, but had moved his budget motion  through three readings, each time approved by the BN assemblymen present, under vocal protests from Pakatan assemblymen.  There was no debate and no one seemed to have heard any detailed figures – if figures were read out then, these were not carried in many newspapers the next day anyway.  Pakatan assemblymen walked off the assembly immediately after the approval of the third reading.

A budget proposal is a statement of revenues and expenditures as well as major policies that encompass the entire government which is made up of many departments.  So, it is normally a lengthy speech, followed by debates that take place during each of the first, second and third readings.  It is hence a real marvel how the assembly could have compressed such elaborate process of proposal, deliberation and decision in all the three stages in the short interval of half an hour.

Through such gun-shot approval, the voices of the people who speak through their representatives are muted.  Isn’t this a mockery of our democratic process and betrayal of the trust of the people?

Was budget legally approved?

On top of that is the questionable legality of Ganesan’s position as speaker.  His election as speaker on May 7 was deemed a fake, as the assembly session on that day was so chaotic and violent that it was not possible to conduct any business except the delivery of the opening speech by the Regent.  Compounding this now is Ganesan’s breach of the Perak Constitution Article 36 A (5) which stipulates that a speaker must relinquish his private practice immediately or in any case not later than three months after his appointment, failing which he shall be disqualified.  So, even if Ganesan’s appointment on May 7 was legal (which is not at all the case), he was already disqualified on Aug 7.

With an illegal speaker presiding in the assembly, can any business be conducted legally, least of all the all important agenda of the state budget approval?

No doubt, BN may be least worried about matters of illegality, confident of its iron-grip on the entire government machinery to serve its parochial interests.  After all, isn’t BN Mentri Besar Zambry, who was appointed while incumbent Mentri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin was still serving, also illegal if the courts have been upholding the constitution?  Isn’t the entire state cabinet, which was selected by Zambry, also illegal?

But can BN afford the massive loss of popular support every time the police manhandle and bully elected representatives from the opposing camp or judges dishing out blatantly unconstitutional rulings?

Barbaric police intervention

Take the ridiculous scenario of the Perak assembly of Oct 28.  The entire assembly compound was turned into a virtual war zone, with the entrance being protected by the kind of barbed wire seen only in war time.  Hundreds of policemen and riot squad who had been milling inside and outside the building manned the five check points stretching from the gate to the door of the assembly hall.  Pakatan assemblymen complained of harassment every inch of their way to the last check point where they were subjected to the humiliation of a body search and metal scan and their personal effects of hand phones, lap-tops, cameras etc being forcibly removed before they entered the hall.

On his way to the assembly hall, Speaker Sivakumar was lured to an area not visible to reporters and the public where he was pounced upon by scores of police personnel who forcibly disrobed him.  In the melee, he was punched and strangulated with an arm lock, and his colleagues roughened up for trying to protect him.

Pray, where in the world can you see such barbaric act?  Not even in the pariah state of Zimbabwe!

The picture inside the assembly hall is not any prettier. Scores of police personnel were there to man the entire assembly, with twenty of them forming a protective wall in front of the BN speaker Ganesan.  And video cameras were transmitting live the activities of Pakatan assemblymen to the state police headquarters and the national headquarters at Bukit Aman, according to a Malaysiakini report.

Now, isn’t this the ultimate humiliation and insult to the highest and the most sanctimonious institution of a democracy, with the police contemptuously treating our Pakatan law makers as a bunch of criminals?

BN must make up its mind once and for all.  Does it still want to put up the pretence that Malaysia is a democracy?  If it does, should it continue to bombard our senses with such disgusting scenes and bare to the world the ugly truth of what Malaysia truly is?

I object strenuously. Just because UMNO goons and thugs are barbaric does not mean the whole state is barbaric. But I agree full heartedly that the people need to protect themselves against UMNO barbarism.

Just wonder why BN is slugging away with its people friendly slogan & yet do not practice what they preach in calling for fresh state elections in Perak. By not calling for Perak's state election,Its just typical BN hogwash double talk.

After seeing what was happening in the DUN Perak, I do not have any doubt about Dr Quah writing regarding UMNO involvement in May 13 1969 incident. In order to stay in power, we have seen that UMNO has conspired with PDRM, judges, AG and MACC to bring down the opposition. They have even go beyond the extend of murdering as in the case of TBH.

Let's hope that one day when PR form the new government, those responsible will be brought to the justice.

Perak is the place to be where wheelers and dealers trade by saying "I won't spill the beans on Mongolian girl as long as I am still the real Tai Koh mafia thug head" "Perakians can rot in hell while I make hay in the Monte Carlo casinos, cruise down the French Riviera all at the expense of the poor sods"
This is the end product of Mr. 1Malaysia.

Why should BN make up its mind? For morals and principles? THAT ship sailed long time ago under Mahathir. Why do you think Tunku Abdul Rahman refuse to see the man at the end of his life despite Mahathir's success?

BN cannot change other than because of raw power and wealth. Either Malaysian force it to change OR pay it to change. Its plain and simple...

By hook or by crook UMNO/BN MUST CLING TO HOLD POWER IN PERAK. The reason being is to uphold "THE WATERFACE" OF NAJIB THE INITIATOR OF THE POWER COUP IN PERAK TO PROOF TO UMNO MEMBERS THAT HE IS NOT SOFT AS PAK LAH" It doesn't matter what Perakians want as long as UMNO?BN manage to cling to power, YET THERE ARE STUPID IDIOT WHO CLAIMED TO BE A FAIR LEADER SAID IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES RAKYATS, COMES FIRST.Since UMNO/BN are made mostly of cowards because they dont dare to dissolve Perak State assemblies, I think Rakyat, especially Perakians WILL REALLY PUNISH THEM IN THE NEXT ELECTION.For Zamri, the court MB, I think you will lose your seat in the next election.

Who cares about its legality and legitimacy. Just bulldozed through, they got it so must defend it at all costs. Media, be it electronic or papers are under their control. the people (majority rakyat) don't have internet, they don't read m2day. Tell rakyat 'MB yang dilantik oleh Tuanku Sultan tidak diterima oleh pembangkang yang dihasut oleh DAP, yang anti-melayu'. So PR supporters you have a lot of works telling the majority of rakyat the 'real' story. smilies/grin.gif

Now you can still leave the state and venture overseas to work illegally and send money back to Perak. Wait until UK also imposes Visa requirements on you guys. Lets see when whether you will wake up and realise that your overseas money which was sustaning the economy of Perak has all gone to BN's pocket. You worthless Perakians

Bravo !!! Malaysia has set four world records that merit publication in Guiness Book Of World Record.
1. War zone in a most safe area mounted by none other than the police.
2. A budget motion passed within 30 minutes.
3. an illegal gunisan who had the cheek to act as speaker; and
4. Would you believe that all the above occurred during the same single event.

Zimbabwe will envy Malaysia.

This is the State where the former Chief Justice and the current Sultan reside. Does he care if his state become a police state? A lawless state? A disgraceful state? A barbaric state? Well if even the Sultan whose love for the state should be above all and he doesn't care, who cares? Thank God the rakyat of Perak is made of better stuff than the ruler. They care about right and wrong. They care about indignity of their freedom and democratic rights robbed. They care about doing what is right. They shall remain carry and do what is right even if their ruler does not. People power!!!

Perak is a barbaric state because the reigns of power are held by barbarians.
I believe a majority of the rakyat are very civil people.
The problem is they are denied the rights to choose a government of their choice.
Come the next general elections, i'm very confident civil society shall be restored and all the barbaric leaders shall be booted out.

It is so sickening to experience increased police brutality and blatant abuse of power in peaceful Perak. Brutal force is now used to cause fear exact pains by an illegal constituted Perak State Government. It is using every means to muffle dissents and silence the people's legitimate concerns. The politicians are treating the rakyat like fools, forcing rubbish down our throats. It has become unbearable.

UMNO sees itself as a legitimate and supreme pain giver to the citizenry of Malaysia. It has openly abused its power is used to oppress, inflict pains and sufferigs contrary to the vow of office to protect the constitutional rights of every citizen. It has thus forfeited its rights to rule.

Knowingly or unknowingly, UMNO and the royalty are diligently planting their own seeds of destruction. The power to rule is given by the people and it can be taken back. The State Government has lost its legitimacy to rule in Perak, pure and simple. Those who rule with force must contend to face force.

Do not forget the fundamental law of physic, with every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If UMNO does not live by laws, neither should anyone else lives within the confines of laws. Malaysia will become a lawless country and it is fast slipping into a failed state.

The only salvation for the country is to get rid of the incompetent, callous, evil, and corrupt politicians and start building the country all over.

The only hope for Malaysia is to have an uprising of the masses led by brave and conscientious Malaysians to clean the country of corrupted imposers.

It is the people's business now to wrestle back the power and reset the political climate. Without a stable political climate, Perak will face rapid decline in its fortune.
