(The Sun Daily) - The British government is unimpressed with steps taken by Malaysia to address the large number of Malaysians who overstay in Britain, and may eventually impose entry visas.

Last year, Britain announced it will impose visa requirements on Malaysia and 10 other countries deemed as high risk in terms of their nationals who work or stay in Britain illegally.

The other countries are Bolivia, Bostwana, Brazil, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Trinidad & Tobago, and Venezuela.

However, a visit by then foreign minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim won Malaysia a reprieve.

But as far as the British government is concerned, Malaysia is on probation until 2011, and by the look of things, it could lose the current six-month visa-free facility extended to social visitors, no thanks to the 20,000 Malaysians who stay in Britain illegally.

The British view the overwhelming number of Malaysian overstayers as a lack of enforcement at the point of departure in Kuala Lumpur by Malaysian immigration authorities.

Malaysia’s Deputy High Commissioner to Britain, Datuk Rustam Yahaya, said the UK wants Malaysia to show it is serious in ensuring only bona fide visitors go to London.

"The UK reserves the right to review the visa waiver periodically and from the feedback I have been receiving, they are not impressed," he said when met in London recently.

"With so many Malaysians overstaying, the prognosis is not good."

Rustam said that of the 20,000 Malaysians who have been declared illegal by overstaying or entering the country on false declarations, 98% are from the Chinese community and the rest are Indians and other ethnic groups and a small number of Malays.

There are 50,000 Malaysians in the UK.

He said that by 2011, the UK will review Malaysia’s status and impose the requirements, which would involve applying for a six-month visa and paying £200 (RM1,114) an application and even providing fingerprints.

The criteria for Malaysia passing the Visa Waiver Test include how far the Malaysian authorities cooperate in ensuring illegals or people with suspect intentions do not leave for the UK.

Officials from the UK Border Agency were tightlipped but said it would make things easier if immigration officers at KLIA or the LCCT are more vigilant against passengers flying to London, as despite getting the reprieve, an average of two Malaysians are deported every week.

This would also mean that passengers travelling to the UK from Kuala Lumpur may not be able to use the Autogate express passport checks facility.

"If you are going to stay in London for a month but have only £100 on you, something is fishy," said an official.

A statement issued through the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on Monday adds: "The UK keeps under continual review the list of those countries who enjoy a waiver of the requirement for a visitor visa.

"Following the formal ministerial review (Visa Waiver Test) which concluded in early 2009, we are working closely with the Malaysian government on migration matters and will monitor the effectiveness of their actions."

Westminster City Chinese community liaison officer David Tan said it also does not help bona fide Malaysian visitors that many of their countrymen in the UK are also involved in credit card fraud, trafficking in women, and vice.

He said many overstayers work in restaurants in Leicester Square’s Chinatown.

"If you walk into a kitchen in Chinatown and cannot find a Malaysian who had overstayed, I will be very surprised," said Tan, a Malaysian.

A Wisma Putra statement said Malaysia will continue to assure the UK Government on the high level of security at all international airports to prevent Malaysia from becoming a transit point for illegal migrants into the UK.

It said Malaysia will conduct publicity campaigns to bring awareness so as not to breach UK immigration rules.

Datuk Rustam Yahaya

Since you brought up the race composition on those Malaysia overstaying in UK. I have post this question to you. Why are these people doing that and so many from one ethnic group? We have to talk and discuss about this because this is very concerning because why would people from a great country like MAlaysia want to become a second class citizen in UK without a status.... ever wonder why??????

Side notes... it is very dumb for you to make the race statements but that usually come from a racist like UMNO, MIC or MCA people...

Identify the course of why so many Malaysian overstayed, the vast majority are Chinese Malaysians with no jobs to go in Malaysia, but will Malaysian Government care? Don’t forget the hidden agenda of Umno is to make Malaysia a 100% Malay Muslim country. They are taking in their Indo brethren by the thousands to take away the jobs from all the non-Malays citizens to hasten their agenda. Looks like by 2011 visa requirement will be impose and Malaysian government would not be bothered a toss.

NOT at all surprised!
Immigration whether legal or illegal has become a hot issue in UK. The current economic climate has caused record number of job loss. The British National Party (a white racist party) is having a field day taking advantage on this issue, saying the government hasn't done any thing to control immigration and blaming foreigners for 'stealing' British jobs. And the bad news, the BNP is increasingly gaining support (won two seats in the European elections!), thus putting the government under intense pressure.

This is one of the the ways the Government is flushing out Non-Malays on their Ketuanan Melayu policies and it become other countries problems.

Wisma Putra is only doing a public relation coordination work.

In short...force Non-Malays Malaysians out in a economic domination way with NEP.

Odd. I don't see why Msian Immigration should check whether Malaysians going to UK will not overstay. Don't they have Entry Clearance Officers at UK ports of entry to deal with this?

Say I buy i month AirAsia round trip ticket to Bangkok..its cheap. Then I fly to London from Bangkok. How Malaysia Immigration will able to stop me from going to London??
Hopefully our Immigration Department are good enough to handle this, not only show their talent in erasing immigration records.
Let us see how our Jaguh Kampung Ministers and Jaguh Kampung Immigration Department officers address this issue.

In the 80's and 90's malaysian chinese also went to holland to work in the kitchen of chinese restaurants.
The reason? They can earn up to 10,000RM a month, so they work for one year and go back to Malaysia with a lot of money.
Nowdays the dutch government is checking restaurants for illegals regularly and the owner gets a starting fine of 40,000RM if caught.
The UK government can do the same if they want to solve the problem.

These days the UK is a poor choice of country to emigrate to - financially, it is a mess and the healthcare system is facing a meltdown. You may earn a lot when you convert to malaysian ringgit but you are paying taxes out of your ass in taxes - income tax, GST, council tax...
There are greener pastures elsewhere.

UK immigration is extremely strict with foreigners. They grill those visitors from overseas on social visit, like where are you staying, what's your friend's name, how long, and for 15-30 mins. Worse if you can't speak English (like those from Vietnam or Taiwan). That's why hardly any Malays can pass UK's immigration (no Inggeris-lor), except Najis' Baginda, highly welcomed to UK.

Anyway good on UK immigration for taking such a serious note on illegals. Look at our Malaysian immigration and customs, we have millions of illegals from Indonesia and Bangladesh, our officers are just looking for bribes and extort free sex services from these illegals. That's the ticket of entry into Malaysia.

Hay UK

Leave those Chinese Malaysians alone.

They are just trying to find a better life since Malaysia sucks so bad for them.

So what if they ruin Malaysia's already sullied reputation and make it more difficult for me to visit Old Trafford once a year as I have been for over a decade.

They must make money-mah.

The Brits mention Malaysian but our racist High but Low Commissioner in London explicitly mention Chinese and Indians.
Malay only a small number ..Oh,kita melayu sangat bagui lah, orang cina dan india yang cari pasal lah?

Many Malaysian seeks work in Japan , Taiwan , Australia, NZ ,America , France , Germany , Holland and UK both legally and illegally. But majority are doing it illegally.
Because of favorable exchange rates and jobs in Malaysia are taken by legal and illegal foreigners . And it doesn't helps as the Malaysian gov policies favors the Malay Muslims only.

It is advisable for the UK immigration to enforce the visa ruling . At the same time, please make sure that razak baginda do not overstay in the UK.He is a suspect in a murder case and he is a suspect in a massive corruption case.
And if UK requires help to clean up their Chinatown.
You may request Putarjaya to fly in their multi purpose Rela goons.
This group is famous in chasing after the illegal workers, harassing the legal workers ,breaking down doors at 3am ,raiding factories , snapping photos of GROs , robbing , arson , extortion , beating up people etc.

I visited Britain 3 times in the past 5 years for business.

In Manchester, I was greeted by a very corteous English lady.

The other two trips where I landed in Heathrow, I thought I was in Bombay. The immigration officers were mainly Punjabis or Benggalis, and I was able to converse with them in Hindi (my hindi is acceptable... for a Malaysian).

The last trip in March, I noticed plenty of Pakistanis in the workforce in Heathrow.

Point, this is not a racist thing. In England, everyone gets a fair chance to work and earn a living.

I suppose the day I land in Heathrow and am greeted by a Malaysian and can exchange greetings with 'Hoiii, macam mana, abang!' will be a great day for me.

But Britain, it's your responsiblity to ensure that illegals are caught and sent back.

Well, we must tackle this problem and not blame on other country.
The fact that we are given a reprieve but nothing seemed to be happening from our side. Even the note that they will have a publicity programme is just .. inadequate. Wisma putra seemed to be clueless.

We should not get angry over Rustam's disclosure. This is an analysis, But more importantly, this is a symptom of the stability of the country for the nons and the desperation of moving out to earn a decent living. Is this something wrong?

To Rais

So, why do you have to classify Malaysian into Chinese, Indians etc? Malaysian means malaysian lar. If you don't consider Chinese, Indians as Malaysian, then they don't need pay taxes lar, ask the Malays pay taxes saje lar.

Irrespective of how Britain is on their policies, the situation now is about foreigners ' overstaying '..The fact that anyone who enters a country on the pretence of social and then sort to illegal stay is already breaking the laws of the country at the departure to country of entry...!!

To our honourable Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and all relevant authorities handling matters such as these, this is surely an embarrasment for other Malaysian who are genuine travellers. The Malaysians are branded in many ways and it's not pretty..

Some good reasons or we may say excuses for Malaysians putting themselves in this situations and it does not matter the ethnic breakdown,as the foreigh countries at entry sees the passport of the country you hold and then alone is enough for the country to be branded..

Just like in the Olympics,if a Malaysian wins an event,it's announced as a Malaysian that won and it's the Malaysian flag that flies..

So now if there should be such an hefty sum to pay for Visa entry into Britain, would the ministers and government people and their families be exempted? As usual the common people have to face the music.......
