Lim Kit Siang

The Proton management should respond to the shocking report from New Zealand where Proton Jumbuck turned in the worst crash test ute performance and adjudged not fit for the road.

The two-door Jumbuck utility vehicle (ute) was given dismal safety ratings by independent crash test organisation Ancap (Australasian New Car Assessment Programme) in New Zealand, awarded the lowest possible one-star rating after its performance in frontal offset and side impact crash tests.

Ancap scores vehicles from zero to five stars, depending on the safety features and protection of the driver and passengers.

The ute’s cabin was severely deformed in the 64km/h offset crash test. It offered poor head protection for the driver and passenger, and poor leg protection for the driver.

It also lacked airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control – a feature that senses skidding and individually brakes the wheels, helping the driver to regain control.

The Proton Jumbuck joined two other utes available in New Zealand in being given dismal safety ratings by Ancap

The New Zealand media today quoted Consumer NZ testing manager Hamish Wilson as saying that potential buyers should steer clear of these utes.

“We don’t believe these vehicles should be allowed on the road.”

He said the minimum standard for a new ute should be four stars. The Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton and several Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore utes achieved this.

The difference in safety between a two-star and a four-star ute was significant, he said.

“It can mean the difference between walking away from a crash and being taken away in an ambulance.”

The following is the report from New Zealand Herald:

“We don’t believe these vehicles should be allowed on the road” is clearly designed by orang asing in conjunction with the traitorous opposition to malign the engineering prowess of our NEP inspired Proton engineers. What the heck does these New Zealanders know about their cars anyway, when all they know is to farm sheep. If they are so smart, their PM would not have been caught by their own polis for speeding when our PM langsong even got away with murder. This shows that they are not that smart as compared to our politicians who can get away with everything. Support our local car industry, be patriotic, die for your country, buy a P

I work in an auction house in Perth. Last month we managed to auction out a Proton GenII 2008 with 25000kms for AUS$13450.00. We have a Jumbuck currently sitting at the yard 2006 model going for AUS$6000.00.
Proton just can't compete. Malaysia needs to implement NEP to the rest of the world. May be then Proton can survive. It is all doom now or then.
Happy motoring to all Proton owners.

The government needs to stop propping up all these Malaysian companies and let them find their own feet or fail, one way or the other.

Unless these companies can make it on their own they will never make it in the global market and should not be added to the burden of the country. I am ashamed that a product like Proton is now being pushed into the world market and getting judged so negatively, it reflects directly on our country and the way it is being run.

I stay in NZ, and I was casually browsing the New Zealand Herald yesterday when I saw the article. And all I can think was, whenever our country is mentioned in the papers, it's always for the wrong reasons. Worst car produced, cow head protest, the Perak Assembly debacle.. *sigh*
Embarassing much.

Thats proton achievement after more than 20 years in car industry. At least if the proton cars have world class quality, we can go to next step of looking into marketing issues. Here the basic requirement also cannot be met, and expect this cars to be accepted world wide.
Just ponder a few minutes honestly, and you will know what caused Proton car dismal performance. I will say this is due to the kind of people we have in Proton from top to bottom.
Anyway it is not too late..please cut a deal with taukeh besi buruk while the metal price is still high.

Aiyo why send the proton overseas and humiliate us like this. Just keep it in Malaysia. It is only for Malaysian soil.It is built for Malaysian usage.Don't the foreigners know that in Malaysia quality is very unimportant. Here we have NEP that ensures everything goes up the ladder with no quality. That includes our PM.

What can you say. . . , the UMNO and their crony standard is only sending an astronaut to space for "roti Chanai" and "teh tarik" research and making automobiles for international market meant to maim or kill people or both!

And worst still, their cronies got fat Multi-million ringgit contracts from Proton to supply 'cut-corners" low quality parts.

This is the result of the UMNO NEP policy of protecting UMNOPUTRA companies from international competition. Only "jaguh kampong", outside of Malaysia, they are nothing.

And yet those idiots at Proton have the "cheek" to announced that the "government support" is their "business strength". Well, strength my foot. . .!

Me thinks those people who design Proton Jumback (better still name it "Proton Juboq")must be UiTM graduates!

biasalah tu ....

and how scary to think that the one which failed the crash test is the one proton named "export quality".. proton cars in malaysia are built with much much lower quality, selling at way higher price than their export counterpart.. i'll stick with my old second hand beemer, thank you. though it rattles here and there, i trust that 12 yrs old car more than any new proton.

They produced an inferior product, protect it to ensure it is a sufficiently costly to the public to benefit some UMNO cronies by imposing higher taxes on other superior product and sale of Import Permits.

This is BN's version of "Rakyat di dahulukan"? when we spend a good portion of our income to pay car loans for up to 9 years? and spend our whole life in debts just to feed ourselves?

More people dies in Malaysia based on dead per car crash per ratio total # of protons on road. The problem is those buggy who said and stick "LULUS" stick on the proton cars are never 'LULUS' or frequently have not gone throuh any insepection. Look at Proton designs of all the model. The 1st Proton Saga was badly design and it resulted many of these model pilling on top of each other cars when accident. The Tiara and Juara has high % of turning turtle when doing a corner, wira has a 'milo' body. Only waja and perdana seem solid, but oftenly somehow, perdana always turns into a mashed burger when colliding with other cars.

Well what do you expect from a company who employs people not based on meritocracy? People who come from mainly from universities which do not admit based on academic results, people who always ask for handicap or discount or who gain admission to employment based on the colour of their skin? Or shut out other people based on quota.
Isn't Proton doomed & heading for failure in the long term.

The Jumbuck or Arena as it is called here is a sorry excuse for a ute (as they call an utility truck in Australia). The Jumbuck is a redesign from the Wira sedan car and could never match up to the rugged use of a pickup truck. Moreover this design is more than 30 years old and it is not surprising that it would fail the more demanding vehicle survivability tests nowadays.

On BBC Top Gear last week they tested a Proton and it was complete rubbish, what you expect from a car that is made out of plastic.
And for the Lotus F1?
I don't think its going to pass the FIA crashtest.

To overcome the problem, we have to do the following:

a) Force Mahathir to drive the Proton Jumbuck round NZ to prove them wrong
b) Get Bodowi to take Jenne for a spin on the F1 track
c) Get Rosmah to go marketing on it. (She has hugh appetite)
