Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah made an impassioned plea today for ordinary Malaysians to defend the supremacy of the country’s secular Constitution. He also urged the public to demand from political parties the adherence to such constitutional principles like equality of rights, separation of powers and the prevention of discrimination.

The veteran Umno leader appeared to take aim at his own party, as well as other politicians, in his speech at the launch of the book “Multi-Ethnic Malaysia” edited by Dr Lim Teck Ghee and published by UCSI University.

Tengku Razaleigh said ordinary Malaysians should demand that all political parties should not be allowed to propagate economic and political policies which discriminate against any citizen.

Political parties should also refrain from involvement in business, he said.

But, he said, Malaysians should rise up to defend the Constitution because it is the ultimate safeguard of fundamental liberties.

“One view put out by those who are impatient with these safeguards is that our Constitution is an external and Western imposition upon us, that it is the final instrument of colonialism.

“People have drawn on this view to subject the Constitution to some higher or prior principle, be it race, religion or royalty. Of course, the proponents of such views tend to identify themselves with these higher principles in order to claim extra-constitutional powers.

“These are transparent attempts at revisionism which erode the supremacy of the Constitution. We should have the confidence to reject such moves politely but firmly, whoever advocates them, whatever their social or religious status.”

Tengku Razaleigh pointed out that the Constitution was built by a deliberately consultative process aimed at achieving consensus.

In his speech, he also focused on the question of Islam and the Constitution.

“The question of whether the Federation should be an Islamic state, for example, was considered and rejected by the Rulers and by the representatives of the people. Had we wanted to be ruled by syariah, the option was on the shelf, so to speak, and could easily have been taken, because prior to this the states were ruled by the Sultans according to syariah law.

“The fact that we have a Constitution governed by common law is not an accident nor an external imposition. We chose to found our nation on a secular constitution after consultation and deliberation.”

Ku LI,

A constitution is not worth the paper it is written on if the country is in the hands of thieves, liars and murderers.

So no need for you to tell us to protect that piece of paper. Go help us get rid of that bunch of thieves, liars and murderers instead.

Then we can say you are not just one of those liars.

we must defend the constitution. and we will. if only the judiciary will do they part but alas their eyes seem close and all they can do is say correct, correct, correct. as for UMNO/BN, they will abuse it for their benefit as long as the police, judiciary, MACC,EC etc close their eyes cos they are part of BN plus 4 and the plus 4 will do anything as long as their masters are happy and their are rewarded. None have any decency to defend the laws their promised to uphold and defend.Sigh.

But we the people will prevail, time will come where we will have our say against those who abuse the constitution and the law. and god will be on our side as well when these buggers appear before him on judgment day.

Constitution is now effectively dysfunctional.

Once rule-of-law has been subverted (judiciary is succumbed, law-enforcement is perpetrating murder and killings, torture, false incarceration, selective prosecutions etc, rulers are subserviently dependant), no point asking the people to honor the irrelevant constitution.

The very last semblance of democracy that is still standing (inspite of all manipulations of gerrymandering, and postal votes etc) is still alive for now (don't assume it will be for long and don't assume that the next GE will indeed occur).

Nothing is guaranteed (such as elections) when the leaders of governance have indulged in killing, torture, embezzlement etc - because their is NO EXIT PATH for their crimes.(they will be hung if brought to trial and found guilty)

We are at the brink of a failed state as a democracy. And soon we shall become citizen-prisoners.

If Ku Li wants people to launch a resistance movement to rescue democracy and preserve the sanctity of constitution, say it with conviction - and call for all citizens to shut down the nation. (don't hide behind speeches)

Don't understand what you're trying to achieve, Tengku. Because people ain't listening as long as you're in UMNO. UMNO fellas don't bother with you, and the rakyat ain't gonna trust you as long as you're still in UMNO.

So, what's it gonna be? Time to walk the talk, sir.

I am sure Tengku knows what he is doing. His speeches do enlighten and wake the people up to the ideals of our forefathers. If he leaves AMNO, he may only be able to bring along 50% of the party members of Gua Musang. If he thinks he can bring along a very large number that will split or collapse AMNO, I believe he would have done that already. If in spite of his old age, he is prepared to tour the country with Anwar to spread his message, then that will be the last nail to seal AMNO's coffin.

Ku Li will be more helpful if he tells us what type of rising he expects from the citizen. Right now they do not even allow a peaceful assembly!
