Khoo Kay Peng

NEAC chairman Amirsham Aziz does not have to look so far e.g. Taiwan, South Korea and Eastern Europe to find out what is wrong with the Malaysian economy.

It might be more productive and effective for Amirsham and his team to study the peril and consequences of Mahathirism.

The Malaysian economy over the last few decades has been dictated and influenced by Mahathirism, a mix of socio-political economic model introduced by the nation's longest serving PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathirism is a unique blend of social and political interests which were used to define the major economic policies.

The New Economic Policy was subtlely transformed into a main policy which was used as a symbol of the Malay/UMNO political and social dominance. The nexus has made it very difficult for any administration after Mahathir to try to change or repeal the economic policy without facing a major repercussion or protest from the community.

Hence, the economic liberalisation step undertaken by Prime Minister Najib Razak was limited in scope and impact. Only sectors and sub-sectors which do not have a high participation of bumiputeras were liberalised.

Ironically, a renowned US ivy league has found his economic liberalisation effort so significant and interesting until it merits a comprehensive study. It was reported that the Harvard Business School in Boston will undertake a case study on Najib’s "courageous and bold initiatives to tackle the financial crisis."

There is another irony. This announcement did not come from the university spokesman but from the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of Malaysia president G. Gnanalingam.

By now, it should be clear that Najib's economic liberalisation programme is neither 'courageous' nor 'innovative'. There was no follow up on any further liberalisation. If any, Malaysia is only playing catching up compared to more liberal economies in the region such as Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and even Indonesia.

There are still restrictions to foreign ownership, land transaction, equity ownership, public procurement, licensing and others. There is little change in the bureaucracy which hampers any reform effort.

Najib's stimulus package of RM60 billion created limited ripples. Until today, only a fraction or 20 percent of the amount has been used. Since the extra budget is spread over 3 years, it will not generate a significant growth for the local economy.

The Peril of Mahathirism is greater than Vampirism. Whereas, vampires just suck blood, mahathirism sucks all decency, integrity, honesty, fear of shame, fear of God and fairplay out of a nation... and replace these with Corruption. That's the legacy, that's the reality that we are left with.

It is becomingly clear that Najib is bogged down by too many baggages to play an effective role in his capacity as PM. The warlords of UMNO have stifle his power to govern and he couldnt say no to the reappointment of the IGP for another year. At the same time, there's no way that he can object to Isa to be UMNO's candidate for the by-election at Bagan Pinang constituency at PD.

He's such a weak leader that even Rosmah has overshadowed him on the political front and many believe that the Altantuya murder case has been linked to him.

Unlike a sultan, Mahashithead did not killed anyone with his hands. But with hands, he killed a beautiful nation. He nurtured a political party of beasts. He pocketed billions of ringgit. He helped his cronies to make billions and billions of ringgit. Most Malaysians do not want him around anymore.

If you think that Nazib Rozak beholden to the PIG is bad, wait till the French and other governments squeezes his bolz to elicit commercial and political advantages at the threat of revealing more of his secrets. He could be the worst national security nightmare this nation has ever faced. But then, that's UMNO, money is everything... rasuah sayang eh... semua nya OK!

"Perils of Matherism?" Surely this must be a mistake, given the numerous books and articles which have been written to praise Mahathir for turning this country into a "developed" nation. And not to forget how the "genious" Mahathir single-handedly "saved" the country in the last financial crisis through currency control and thereby snubbing IMF and the US (I wonder why Najib doesn't want to also introduce currency control now to stop the deline of the ringgit and revive the economy) . The praises showered on Mahathir suggest that he has turned Malaysia into a top nation which is independent of the imperialist US and the West - the US and the West needs Malaysia, and not the other way round.

However, looking beyond the praises, one can see why the evil corrupt dictator has in reality destroyed the country and instituted irreversible changes:
* He destroyed agriculture and converted agriculture land for all kinds of industries, indiscriminate housing, golf courses, etc. No proper planning - as long as money could be made, agricultural land could be converted for anything one wanted.
* He brought foreign workers from Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc. to work in the factories and plantations for low wages , thereby denying Malaysians the right to earn decent wages. These foreign workers created various kinds of social, health and security problems for Malaysians but Mahathir could not care two hoots.
* While pretending to be anti-US and anti-West, Mahathir begged for their investment and money. Thus, contrary to what the naive Mahathir sycophants and blind supporters believe, Malaysia was and is dependent on the US and the West for exports, investments and technical skills. Even during the era of currency control, Mahathir made special efforts to inform and appease the US and the West, knowing that their consent was most critical for his supposedly brilliant currency control.
* Mahathir introduced the Malaysia Bolih principle - you can do anything as long as it resulted in plenty of money for him and his cronies. The consequences of the actions don't matter. What matters is MONEY and more MONEY.
* Privitazation was Mahathir's vehicle for creating instatnt millionaires and billionaires and creating an ever-lasting flow of cash for those involved.
* Changes were made to laws, policies and rules in the country to foster corruption and nepotism.
* NEP was reinforced so that UMNOputras and Mahathir's non-Malay cronies could make millions and billions
* etc, etc.

Perhaps the tile should be changed from "The Peril of Mahatherism" to "The Destruction of Malaysia by Mahathir".

If UMNO win the next GE, then you can be sure Malaysia economy will go into free fall. UMNO is incapable of reforming itself. If majority of the Malays don't see any problem with UMNO rulling the country, then the minority will have to suffer together.

If the right minded and liberal Malays are unable to bring down UMNO, then the Malay community is proven to be unprogressive and very feudalistic in their mindset. It is very difficult to reform the nature of the Malays.

It is better to migrate out of Malaysia than to hope for the majority of the Malays to come to their sense. Malaysia is not competetive in so many sectors compare to other country. Don't even try to compare the Malay dynamism with Thais, Vietnamese and Indonesians. Majority of the Malays are just to comfortable to change. All they can talk about with pride is the Petronas tower and the KLIA. That's it.

What about R&D and new discovery that contribute the mankind's progress. ZERO. ZERO. Because you see Malay leaders like ISA Samad, Ali Hassan, Khir Toyol and other UMNO warlords, you know that Malays talents and progressivism is supress.
