(BBC News) Egypt's highest Muslim authority has said he will issue a religious edict against the growing trend for full women's veils, known as the niqab.

Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, dean of al-Azhar university, called full-face veiling a custom that has nothing to do with the Islamic faith.

Although most Muslim women in Egypt wear the Islamic headscarf, increasing numbers are adopting the niqab as well.

The practice is widely associated with more radical trends of Islam.

The niqab question reportedly arose when Sheikh Tantawi was visiting a girls' school in Cairo at the weekend and asked one of the students to remove her niqab.

The Egyptian newspaper al-Masri al-Yom quoted him expressing surprise at the girl's attire and telling her it was merely a tradition, with no connection to religion or the Koran.

All these Arab customs and dressing should not be identified with Islam. These are man made restrictions on women so that they can control them, beat them and for satisfying their sexual gratification x 4. smilies/wink.gif

In the Saudi deserts, horny tribal Arabs, in the absence of women, often take out the heat by climbing onto the Camels or Goats. This is allowed under the ancient arabic practice before the arrival of Islam.

Under today's context, there are some muslims who practice sex with camels and goats in the remote and tribal areas ? Some have have justify by saying that it is a accepted practice during the Islamic era. Do you think this is islamic or man made satisfy the urge of the batang ???

Where are those mad cows from Section 23? Hurry, drag a cow's head to al-Azhar university and warn him of bloodshed if he wants to continue with his insistence of removing that veil. Ask MAS for a discount to block book a flight to Egypt.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I got this news from today's HARIAN METRO (06/10/09) page 27

- ULAMA DIPECAT

- AP

The professor has figured it out. Finally they are beginning to perceive the differences between arab traditions and islam.

At this rate they will in no time perceive the differences between the koran and the hadith.

The Koran is inextricably linked with Arab Culture. Muhammed had 11 wives, the youngest being Ayesha who was aged 6 when he married her. No one in his right mind would advocate emulating the Muslim prophet as his behaviour would be considered immoral and totally unacceptable in 2009.

Similarly, Arab dress codes as mentioned in the Koran would be out of place and ridiculous if applied uniformly throughout the world. Dress sense is influenced by culture and fashion which is a continually evolving process.

In anycase the Koran does not specifically mention that women must completely cover their hair as is the case in a 'Tudung'. The veil can be applied in so many ways; some only partially covering the head. Which is the right and 'Islamic way'? The Koran never set out to be a fashion trend-setter. The emphasis was on modesty. Some Malay girls cover their hair but otherwise dress in such a 'sexy manner' that wearing a Tudung seems a contradiction. On the other hand, there are Malay girls who do not wear a Tudung whose behaviour and dress does not deliberately set out to arouse the passions in men.

It is good that for once we are seeing Religious leaders coming to their senses. The world is changing and unless the Religious change, the younger generation will them and their brand of Islam behind.

Hopefully the ban will be passed and enforced. We can see lots of these women in KL, and can see how difficult it is for them when they eat in restaurants, when they quickly lift the veil and speedily shovel some food into their mouth. This goes on until they finish their food. Sometimes the co-ordination is out of sync and the spoon hits the veil and food falls all over their clothes. One time, this Arabic woman had to somehow feed herself while holding a child on her lap.

Meanwhile, their husbands sit next to them, cool and comfortable in their jeans or half pants and light-weight tee shirts, eating their meal without any problems.
