The MCMC has in the past failed to silence Malaysia Today officially through blocking it in August 2008. Now, with even more revelations of various scandals of the government exposed through this site, we can't help but suspect that there is a more significant force, a hidden hand at play aimed at bringing down Malaysia Today.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

First of all, I have received tons of happy birthday messages via SMS, Facebook, e-mails and postings on this site. Initially, I tried to reply to all these messages one by one but as the messages flooded in I found it impossible to reply to each and every message individually. Therefore, I would like to say thank you and at the same time apologise to all those I was not able to personally reply to.

Now, you may have noticed that of late Malaysia Today has been ‘off the air’ almost every day, sometimes for a stretch of many hours. This has been going on for more than a week. The man leading our technical team thought that maybe we should inform our readers about what is happening so that you can be kept abreast of the developments. Rest assured we are doing everything we can to solve this problem.

Nevertheless, there is just so much we can do. Money, of course, is one issue that we have to address, as what would be required does cost us quite a sum. Money aside, though, if they choose to continue the attacks, even money can’t solve the problem. We just have to pick ourselves up and start all over again whenever we are hit and bear the disruptions to the site with a stiff upper lip.

Anyway, let our technical team explain what is the problem we have been facing.

What happened to Malaysia Today

By Malaysia Today’s technical team

With so much confusion and speculation making its rounds about what is happening to Malaysia Today over more than a week, we are compelled to offer our explanation so that the record can be set straight. Only limited technical details will be mentioned to allow you to appreciate the scale of challenge the site is facing.

You may now be aware that the site has been up and down since Friday, 17 September 2009. This was due to malicious activities by those behind the effort to cripple Malaysia Today. This is just one of the many rounds of cyber-attacks that we at Malaysia Today have had to face for more than a year now.

Coincidentally, this latest round of attacks started immediately after RPK’s explosive expose two weeks ago on Tuesday regarding the Malaysian Cabinet's knowledge and 'approval' of the PKFZ scandal long before it became public knowledge. Suspicious activities against the site happened as early as Wednesday, but the first damage was done in the afternoon of Thursday, which brought the site down.

The site was quickly recovered and by 6.00pm we were up and running again although with some loss of data. The attack revolved around the long-time problem faced by the site - a rather old version of Joomla content management system and the use of third-party components.

Lack of resources (financial, manpower, etc.) has always been a challenge faced by Malaysia Today, which affected the maintenance and operations of the site. During the recovery process, we locked down the site to reduce the danger of further compromises.

The next wave of attacks came the following day on Friday. This time it was in a wave of DDoS traffic crippling one of our nodes at Singapore. The Singapore node operates with about 30Mbps of bandwidth, a luxury by Malaysian standards but far short if we need to match any serious DDoS attacks. The node was basically choked with illegitimate traffic. Typical of DDoS network attacks, the origin of the attacks is difficult to pinpoint and sometimes pointless as the attack agents/zombies are likely compromised systems themselves.

We then activated our resources at our US node to recover the site. The process required optimisation of the site to cope with demand. (The demand on the site seemed much higher, possibly due to the interest on the PKFZ expose.) Hence the intermittent site outage, due to either overloading or optimisation process.

Being a service provider of a larger scale and sophistication, the US node has a higher capability of sustaining the attacks. Still, the attacks persisted on a daily basis and we tried deflecting them as far as we could. The DDoS traffic we suffered ranged from 227Mbps to 835Mbps, a mammoth scale for anyone familiar with maintaining Internet sites. The attacker does not appear interested in defacing the website, typical of self-styled college hackers. He/she just deleted articles published on Malaysia Today, literally one by one, with the single-minded aim of erasing all the explosive stuff on the site.

Further complicating the trace of attacks is the use of free proxy servers, on random basis, by the attackers. This is an irony, as we have been advising our users to use such proxy servers to overcome any potential content filtering by the government.

All the malicious activities and behaviours bear the hallmark of professional, for-hire hackers. These are certainly no amateurs, judging from the persistence and frequency of the attacks, with the main objective of making the content of Malaysia Today inaccessible to the public.

We believe that there is NO explicit blocking of the site by the various Malaysian ISPs. The inconsistent and intermittent accessibility of the site in the past many days are the result of the situation described above, although we must caution that it is almost impossible to detect any clandestine censorship.

The MCMC has in the past failed to silence Malaysia Today officially through blocking it in August 2008. Now, with even more revelations of various scandals of the government exposed through this site, we can't help but suspect that there is a more significant force, a hidden hand at play aimed at bringing down Malaysia Today.

Pete, Happy belated Birthday!

I sympathise with your IT guys for all the troubles these scumbags trying to ruin MT. Perhaps its high time to go international, have more friendly websites mirroring your articles especially the 'hot potatoes' like the ones your have now. Make these goons sweat & please don't throw in the towels. We will also not let you & your team down if you need financings.

Yes, set up accounts for donations to keep MT going. I'm sure there are lots of readers dying to contribute to the cause and also to ensure that the real news are not bulldozed out of existence.

Set up accounts which will enable overseas contributors to participate as they are the ones who have the determination and means to assist in whatever is necessary.

In the process of setting up the accounts, please do not expose yourself to whatever danger out there by leaving any identifiable trials or footprints of your whereabouts - use reliable proxies!

Che Det is bent on supporting ISA by his statement below:
"Firstly one must remember that it is a preventive law, that is it is to be applied before a crime is committed. The law cannot be applied after the crime is committed. For this there are other laws."

Based on Che Det's warped logic, it is OK for the USA and other Western nations to similarly apply ISA and perhaps create more Guantanomo Bay prison and incarcerate as many muslimsa sthey like whom they feel or have the slightest inclination to be potential terrorist (which included upholding a different culutre that includes wearing tudung). I hope the CIA, M5 and other western intelligence agencies adhere to Che Det's warped argument and start imprisoning and incarcerating any muslim whom they feel have such tendencies or slightest inclination of such tendencies. Similarly it is OK for Israel to launch rocket attacks and persecute innocent palestinians including children and women whom they feel have terrorist inclination. It is also OK for Indonesia to treat and claim Malaysians as terrorist and put squarely all terrorist incidence in their soil as arising due to the so called and not proven terrorist claim. Malaysia Boleh!

Weird. As I was reading this earlier and then tried to go one to one of the articles in MT I couldn't access it. Tried the others with the same result. I think the professional hackers were at it again. Alas, the trials and tribulations of being a critic. The govt. doesn't take to criticisms very well, does it?

I couldn't agree more on what Pete found out on this attacker but I have a different opinion on the level of expertise this guy may have. For the DDoS attacks, for a quick fix you could block the IP from router level or from web server. Most of the classic DoS don't work anymore since routers been updated to block such attacks. Only if we could analyse just one of the bots, we could penetrate and infiltrate his "playhouse". But of course bots will eventually be detected by anti viruses sooner or later. We just need to weather the storm for now. smilies/wink.gif

Pete, you've told us your views before on why you were against subscriptions and the likes, and no one could change your mind.

Malaysia-Today and its readers and more and more informed Malaysians are now united as one - be it in activism or in thoughts or in kind - against our treacherous regime that most of us dearly wish to see the last of.

We are literally at war sans bloodshed against the nation's traitors, led by MT in cyberspace since more than 5 years ago. But under the prevailing circumstances, MT, apart from its intellectual contributions and resources, also rightly needs the financial means to conduct this war for the people and future generations.

Most Malaysians would still be ignoramuses today if not for you, dear YM Raja Petra and MT. Many of the upright people cannot thank you enough.

Pete, pardon me if you don't like this repetition: Please DO set up a fund for the cause of MT and the future of Malaysians. Even a simple monastery needs financial contributions from its devotees to subsist. And, we are not just in prayers; MT and us are at war against the mightiest crooked machinery that is continually destroying the country. Everyone here understands that, Pete.

In regards to your understandable worry on the continued independence of MT, I would suggest that you lay a condition beforehand on the would-be-contributors, big or small, NOT to impose any ideas on the running of MT. As to yourself, you have proven enough by now that you don't need our money personally.

And people, if MT calls for funds, contribute what we can, do our part by training our sights on the big picture. Do this as an obligation to your future generations. Also, it would be better if we can minimize some habitual racist thoughts and disruptive comments here that don't help in bringing down UMNO/BN. We need to debate with decent arguments. We must be steadfast and be single-minded in our objective of bringing down those treacherous crooks. Only if that is done can we start talking and arguing over the sincerity of the new Pakatan government. We can't afford internal disruptions without holding Federal power. Of course, trouble-causing representatives now in Pakatan must also be dealt with immediately.

If we value our birthplace, there's a price to pay -- if we don't, there's a bigger and long-term price to pay. Emigration is never an easy option for most people, rich or poor.

Happy Birthday, Pete!

I wonder how exposed our govt sites are. If these goons-for-hire were to turn their attention to the govt sites, I think Malaysia will be in trouble. I doubt the govt has invested as much care and attention in protecting the official sites as the attention given to attacking MT by these people.

If the govt has really 'hired' such people to do the hacking, I'd just want to remind the Najib administration that that was how the US suffered all those terrorism thingy as the Americans were the ones who trained and equipped the Taliban (and Osama) in the first place. It's dancing with evil and selling your soul to the devil. Such activities must never be condoned or encouraged as they can turn around and wreak havoc on the nation's security itself. I hope the Govt think this through before they unleash such hackers into the wild.

Anyway, I seriously doubt MT can be silenced as it is supported by private initiatives and MT-friendly Malaysians are all over the planet. In this information age, it is only a matter of time when all such info are made available to all eyes. As long as it is in digital form it is accessible ....worldwide!

And it goes to show how much the current Najib Administration wants to cover up all the corruption. Wasn't that one of the main reasons for the March 08 tsunami? Perhaps the tsunami wasn't big enough for UMNO(BN) to fear.

Dear Pete,

Happy belated birthday. I felt completely cut off from the world outside and was so helpless after attempting numerous times accessing MT. Checked around with friends but nobody had any clue as to how or when we can read MT again. I never doubted MT was under attack and prayed that the unseen forces would be defeated ASAP. I actually lost some sleep over the possibility of not being able to read from MT again. I feared for my kids, mostly. If without MT to help fight the ruthless politicians, my kids will not have a better Malaysia when they grow up.

I hope there is a way to inform us of an alternative MT link if at all they get me cut off again. Can't afford to lose sleep again

Happy Birthday, Brother RPK. Even now the attacks are ongoing.
Malaysia Today stands at the forefront of the movement to bring
democratic change to the oppressed peoples of this world. Sadly, the
oppressor is no longer the colonialist, but the post-colonial one-
party, that has in fact usurped the democratic constitution and replaced
the Colonial government with an equally repressive government. Their
small mindedness and cruelty stunting the creative and humane development
of their citizens. What can systems based on cruelty and fear do but
perpetuate the worst forms of negativity. They can contribute nothing to
the evolving human spirit. Their very policies are atavistic. This is why
they must be opposed till their last vestiges are removed off the face of
this earth. Viva Liberty, Viva Malaysia Today, Viva Brother RPK.

Lol? The is no such things as microsoft fault on this, seem that u have no idea on how Hackers work. You need a hacker to beat other hacker. DDOS attacks is widely used by hackers to cripple a particular site/country and it is almost impposible to trace the hackers, unless you are one of the "licensed hackers" given license to hack any ISP internationally.
