The best way and no other way to describe the relationship between the Menteri Besar and the Palace was that they were in a state of war. Rahim Bakar whacked the Sultan to kingdom come and he did not care a damn what the repercussions would be.

THE CORRIDORS OF POWER

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Ex-Pahang MB Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar dies

Former Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar died at his home in Jalan U-Thant here at 7.10pm yesterday, believed to be due to a heart attack. He was 66.

His second child, Rosnita, 35, said her father was waiting for the azan call to break the fast when her mother Datin Rosnah Kamaruddin found him unconscious.

She said they contacted paramedics from Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, who pronounced him dead.

"Father did not show any signs prior to his death. As far as we know, he was not suffering from any illness... his death could be due to a heart attack," she said.

Rosnita said since all her brothers and sisters had returned home to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, they were at their father's side when he died.

He will be buried at the Taman Kosas Muslim Cemetery after Friday prayers today at the Kampung Pandan mosque, she said.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Noh Omar said Abdul Rahim's demise was a big loss to politics in the country, especially Umno.

"I had known him when he was actively involved in Umno. I have always admired his high values and struggles towards Umno because despite coming from a poor family, he achieved tremendous success," he said.

Abdul Rahim leaves a wife and four children — Roslina, 37, Rosnita, Mohd Rizal, 32, and Rosazreen, 25 and four grandchildren.

Abdul Rahim was born on Feb 7, 1943 in Beserah, Kuantan and started his political career as the state assemblyman for Beserah after winning the seat in the 1978 general election.

An economics graduate from Universiti Malaya, he was Pahang Menteri Besar from July 19, 1978 to Nov 7, 1981. — Reuters

*************************************************

That is what the mainstream media wrote. It is very short and, of course, just sticks to the ‘core issues’. But what the mainstream media failed to mention is that Rahim Bakar was somewhat of a loose canon who held the post of Menteri Besar of Pahang for slightly over three years.

Rahim Bakar was a most outspoken individual and the Pahang rakyat loved him. He would blast away, even in public, and there were no ‘sacred cows’ as far as he was concerned. In fact, whenever there were palace spies around, Rahim Bakar would purposely raise his voice so that they could hear what he says. Then he would sit back with an amused look on his face to see the spies scurry away to report to the Pahang Sultan what Rahim Bakar just said.

The best way and no other way to describe the relationship between the Menteri Besar and the Palace was that they were in a state of war. Rahim Bakar whacked the Sultan to kingdom come and he did not care a damn what the repercussions would be.

At that time, the Prime Minister was Tun Hussein Onn, a jewel and no-nonsense of a man. He was brought up in the British tradition and acquired his discipline in the British army. Hussein Onn would not tolerate any shit and in spite of his Johor Palace links he would keep the Royal Family on a tight leash and would offer them no slack.

It was always an unwritten rule that the nine Malaysian rulers would be allowed certain ‘excesses’. For states like Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, and so on, these excesses would include large tracts of timber concessions. States like Negeri Sembilan, which did not have too much timber land left, the ‘concessions’ would be in the form of pig farm licences. Why do you think they call that state Negeri Sembilan Darul Khinzir?

The Sultans would be given a certain timber ‘quota’ every year, which they are expected to use wisely. Most Sultans would have Chinese partners to work the timber concessions and for Pahang it was the infamous ‘Tengku’ Wong -- who was exposed and stripped naked by no less than the Gerakan President at that time, Lim Keng Yeak.

This was back in the 1980s. Lim went before TV, and with spit splashing on the TV cameras, he lamented about ‘Tengku’ Wong, who, Lim said, is the Pahang Sultan’s business partner. Lim said that ‘Tengku’ Wong and the Sultan have ripped off the state out of hundreds of millions worth of timber. What Lim did not know was that ‘Tengku’ Wong was not just the Sultan’s partner. He was also ex-Pahang Menteri Besar Khalil Yaacob’s partner. So there were actually three parties involved.

Datuk Fauzi Rahman, the one-time Member of Parliament for Kuantan, actually made a police report on this matter some years back but until today nothing has been done about it. Instead, Fauzi was kicked out, as is the fate of all whistleblowers in Malaysia who lodge police reports or sign Statutory Declarations not favourable to those who walk in the corridors of power.

The ‘Pahang Constitutional Crisis’, if I may be permitted to call it that, started when the Pahang Sultan used up his timber concession quota super-fast. Actually, the Sultan lost it all in the casinos where he spends most of his time.

In one casino in the UK, the Sultan lost so much money, millions of Ringgit, that he could not afford to pay off his debt. Sultan or no Sultan, the casino would not allow him to leave until he paid up.

The Sultan summoned the Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK and the hapless diplomat had no choice but to get out of bed and make his way to the casino. The Sultan then made the High Commissioner guarantee the debt on behalf of the Malaysian government. Only then did the casino allow the Sultan to leave.

When the Sultan returned to Malaysia he asked for more timber concessions. But His Highness had already used up his quota for the year. So Rahim Bakar brought the matter to the attention of the Prime Minister.

Hussein Onn was still boiling mad that the Malaysian government was forced to guarantee the Sultan’s gambling debts and he put his foot down and said no more timber concession for the Sultan.

Rahim Bakar, being the loose cannon who takes no shit from anyone kind of man, told the Sultan in a not so diplomatic way to bugger off. (I just love this Rahim Bakar and when I grow up I want to be just like him).

The Sultan was pissed and he wanted Rahim Bakar sacked and declared persona non grata. (Now you know why I just love the man -- we persona non gratas have to stick together).

Rahim Bakar was eventually forced to resign halfway through his term and they put an interim Menteri Besar, Rashid, to warm the seat while waiting for the next general election in a couple of month’s time.

The Sultan wanted Najib Tun Razak, an orang istana, who was then in the federal cabinet, to take over as Menteri Besar. In the 1982 general election Najib contested a state seat and went back to Pahang as the new Menteri Besar so that he can fulfil his main function of granting the Sultan all the timber concessions that His Highness wanted plus, as his secondary job, run the state administration.

Rahim Bakar was not the first Menteri Besar to fall because he refused to bow to the Sultan’s demand for timber concessions. Ghazali Jawi of Perak and Nik Hassan of Terengganu too were forced out when they refused to give their Sultans what they wanted.

Isa Samad, in a way, suffered the same fate, but he refused to grant the Negeri Sembilan ruler what His Highness wanted not based on principles but because Isa wanted it all for himself (hmm…let’s hope we meet him in this coming by-election in Bagan Pinang).

So there you have it. NST, Utusan, Bernama, Malay Mail, etc., would just report what Reuters reported above. Boring! Malaysia Today gives you the untold story. So let us honour the late Datuk Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar and one-time Pahang Menteri Besar for being the true patriot that he is. He opposed the Sultan and he paid the price. And this is what he must be remembered for, the Hang Jebat of Pahang, the Anak Pahang Tulin.

YB Rahim Bakar would be chortling to receive his due accolades, praises from the rakyat better than more sashes on his shoulder, more medals to weigh down his baju. He will be received upon his passing from this world into the other one with pats on the shoulder worth more than earth metals.

Thank you for speaking up for him. Now we know.

A dear friend of mine who had passed away about 3 year back also knew this MB. He visited him in his shorts and slippers in his home and the MB would welcome him and they would chat. One day this MB told my friend that he really like him because he never pretend or put on air when he visited him and he was the only fellow who visited him in his underwear/shorts smilies/grin.gif

So simple was the man, so accepting and very caring. He knew what was right and just do it. Are there any more such persons in umno ? I think many had gone the way of the dodo.

When the sultan gave my friend a sand mining concession my friend refused.
After so many years after the incident he sort of regretted his decision and was wondering philosophically that in life perhaps what is ours is ours and what is not will not (if you say it in chinese it sounds a lot better ).

Not bad for a disposed menteri besar to live in jalan U-Thant.
Present sultan of pahang is famous for gifts to air stewardesses, such as a rolex or jewellery. That is why present consort was an air stewardess.
when sultan of pahang became the FAM football) chief, just about everything about football in malaysia fell apart. And he still prsist at that position because FIFA contribues millions for football developmentin Malaysia. Maybe half of that goes to his pocket since timber is scarce nowadays.

Currrent Sultan of Pahang had alot of accesses & pays lip service to the people. What more he is the head of state for islamic matters. His kids are the same. I am glad the truth is out for Rahim. Tengku Wong came from a poor family & even failed Form 3 but say what you like, he is the sultan's bright eye boy & became a multi millionaire. My2cents, you are 100% right about the car chases & one gets a slap for overtaking such royalties when they catch you. It is reported in Malaysiakini that some Flippino in USA is claiming her Daddy is the Sultan of Pahang. Go figure.

The FAM positions comes with lots of perks. and the amount of sponsors especially those in the 1980s like Dunhill etc, money was flowing into FAM. but the football standard on the other hand went down to the pits. so with all the money, they could not maintain Malaysian football standard let alone bring it up. Now we are ranked 152 after 25years of currecnt FAM president. But all those officers of FAM, do you think they salary and perks were tied to the performance of Malaysian football? do you think their salary and their perks were reduced? Yet the are now asking for few more years to bring back the shine to malaysian football which they were unable to do in 25 years. sigh

RPK should write more articles on the late Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar who was at one time branded by his UMNO enemies as a Socialist. Yet this ex-MB of Pahang was a simple common kampong boy brought up in Beserah and most of the time during week ends seen strolling in the streets of Kuantan in his jeans, sipping teh tarik and mixing with the common people.

Yes, he did not care two hoots about the Pahang Sultan who demanded more and more timber concessions due to his heavy loss in the casino gambling in London.Tengku Wong had to come to his rescue and was seen carrying James Bond bags of cash rushing to board the helicopter. This news were blacked out in the MSM for obvious reasons.

If not mistaken, it was during the premiership of TDM who intervened in the Pahang government crisis brought about by the spat between Rahim Bakar and the Pahang Sultan.

The free wheeling activities of the Pahang Sultan continued when a nurse from the Philippines was employed by the Sultan who forcefully bore her a child. The grown up daughter has the same semblance and features of the Sultan, but was disowned by the Sultan after paying off some hefty sum to her mother.

TDM also came to the rescue by bailing out the Sultan from his gambling loss in the casino. Even in Genting, a senior executive was awarded DAtukship after Datukship for organizing amorous activities for the sultan, with compliments of the Pahang and Federal Government.

That's the main reason why the Sultan was grateful to the BN government for taking care of him during his 'slump' days. He did not realised that the money did not come from the government, but it came from the taxpayers.

Sigh.......... MSM and BN government never learn from mistakes!!!

I believe with so much money spend on the royal families they would produce some smart Sultan. But, sad to say the government and royalties are in bed to screw rakyat's money. The only way to clean out is to kick one guy of the bed or power. Than we take about 10 years to clean out the PDRM, Civil Services, Judiciary, Government and royalties. If you think PR can clean it up less than five years you might as well go ahead and vote in BN and enjoy the crewing you get for the past 50 years.

Sultan's daughter born out of wedlock:

www.malaysiakini.com/news/1128

She was born out of wedlock to a Malaysian ruler and a Filipino nurse. Her attempts to reconcile with her father were spurned when the on-going negotiations for a settlement hit a brick wall at the end of last year.

Carla Brizuela Shah, 19, was the product of an alleged forced liaison between Dina Brizuela Cooper and Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang. Dina claimed that she was coerced into several sexual encounters with the sultan when he was the seventh Agong from 1979 to 1984.

According to Dina, she became pregnant as a result of the affair and was abandoned by the sultan.

Accepting responsibility for fathering Carla, the sultan had sought to negotiate with Dina since 1997 for a settlement amounting to RM10 million.

The negotiations lasted four years and ended in failure late last year, resulting in the two parties parting in acrimonious circumstances. Dina then resorted to the power of the Internet to highlight her story to the public.

When malaysiakini contacted Dina and Carla for an interview, the news website was told that Carla was reluctant to be interviewed “as she is still very hurt by what has happened with her father”, and that she wanted to concentrate on her college studies.

Dad's acceptance

Dina told malaysiakini that Carla just wanted to be acknowledged as the sultan’s daughter.

“It is unfair to her to be treated as an outcast. She just wants to visit her father and get to know her half-brothers and -sisters,” said Dina.

Speaking on behalf of Carla, Dina said that her daughter, through the negotiation, had wanted to develop a relationship with her father and share some of her life with him.

“She wanted to have the ability to visit him annually, for a period of two weeks each summer and maybe one or two weeks during her winter break,” said Dina.

Dina stressed that Carla never had the intention of becoming a royal princess at all.

Carla is currently pursuing her studies at a university in California, majoring in philosophy and pre-law. Her ambition is to become a lawyer.

Dina said Carla was a bright student who volunteers herself to feed the homeless. Her daughter also worked with disadvantaged youth through her church.

First meeting

“Carla has also informed her father through his lawyers that the reconciliation she sought was not for money and that she was not for sale,” said Dina, adding that Carla was disappointed when the sultan and his lawyers indicated in the meetings that he was reluctant to have a steady relationship with his daughter.

According to Dina, the settlement must include a written acknowledgment of Carla’s paternity, an agreement that Carla be allowed to visit her father annually and that Carla be accepted as one of the sultan’s children.

However, a source close to the royal family told malaysiakini that despite the sultan’s willingness to offer RM10 million to both mother and daughter, Dina wanted Carla to be part of the sultan’s inheritance.

Another clash that Rahim Bakar had with the sultan was on the sale of the Tioman resort to Vincent Tan.
Tioman Resort occupies the best spot in Pulau Tioman, and it was the SEDC Pahang that developed the resort. Vincent wanted it badly and what he did was offer to buy it. Since he could not buy it directly, he had you know who to buy it from the SEDC for RM 1.30 per share and Vincent paid RM2.30, thus giving the intermediary RM1.00 clean profit per share. In fact even the RM1.30 paid to the SEDC was from Vincent. Rahim Bakar, who was once the GM of the SEDC was hopping mad, but what could he do? He wanted to develop the resort into a world class destination. He eevn asked for a casino to be built on the island and promised that the casino will operate only for three years during which time he projected that there would be enough funds for development. Of course his request was rejected, and that strengthened Vincent's hand.
Rahim hated such "predators" who prey on choice govt assets and after aquiring them, inject into their own PLC and they make hundreds of millions. Vincent not only got Tioman from thr govt. He also got Sports Toto, and a very large tract of govt land in Bukit Kiara. YTL got the power plant in Paka for a song, and the island of Pangkor also has it's share of intrigue.
